laptop wanted
My sister in law is looking to buy an ibook or powerbook . At the moment she is using my old shell ibook. Actually I wouldnt mind a moderately priced powerbook myself as my daughter rarely lets me on the G5. (Its not like when we were kids) So if any one has something to sell, feel free to drop me a line so we can get an idea of whats out there and what people are wanting for them. When i go to finder and view the HD as a list of folders with all sizes calculated the folders only add up to 15.315 GB, where is the rest of the data? Re: G5 auction
LOL seeing used computer prices go up over time is a rather rare pleasure... a few months back there were so many of them I was tracking 30 or 40 at a time and obviously the old supply/demand equation meant they went quite cheap now I guess the flood of bleeding edge adopters of the Mac Pro dumping their G5's for chicken feed has passed. Actually, its 11% buyers premium. Its easy to get carried away and forget that one, as I have in the past. Plus these only have 256 Mb of RAM compared to the ebay one at 768 Mb. Re: : G5 Auction
The $1100 one had a nice 20 Apple monitor. It also had a dual core 2 GHz processor which the buyer didn't realise, until told later. I bought the only one without a monitor for $725 (with 11% - $804). It was the only other one that had a dual 2 GHz processor. I'm itchin' to get it hooked up so I can see what else is inside. I hope Ray is right about the extra RAM. Thanks to Robin for the serial number link. It was from this I determined the two that had dual core processors. And also that mine was made in March 2006. These all came from Central Tafe and they had original cartons to take them home in (nice bonus). Obviously Tafe was doing a complete makeover because mine came home in a Mac Pro Quad Xeon box. And at the rate they are being turned over come back next year to pick up the Mac Pro :-) Mike Fuller On 28/06/2007, at 3:41 PM, X.ray.Wa wrote: Yes I was their Between $550 through to around $1100 No 15 on the list was $1100 Many dealers were buying them, On the auction list it said they had 256megs of memory and the ones I have seen did have 1.5 gigs of memory Ray - Original Message - From: Ikon Design [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: WAMUG Mailing List wamug@wamug.org.au Sent: Thursday, June 28, 2007 3:22 PM Subject: G5 Auction Any one have an idea what the G5's went for at auction today? -- The WA Macintosh User Group Mailing List -- Archives - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/archives.shtml Guidelines - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtml Unsubscribe - mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] -- The WA Macintosh User Group Mailing List -- Archives - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/archives.shtml Guidelines - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtml Unsubscribe - mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Memory price difference
Looking at memory sticks for my newly purchased G5 I am amazed at the price difference between vendors. Apple 2 x 1Gb - $649 (NECC) free delivery Zytech2 x 1Gb - $188 not sure on shipping price but local and should be low eBay 2 x 1Gb - $68 + $23 shipping from USA And Apple charge $1299 for the ECC equivalent! Would anyone ever get ECC at this price? I'd love to support local (and I'd certainly ask Daniel for his price) but the sticks from the USA are very tempting at half the price. Re: Bloomberg Video
I can see the video, but it's a very slow download, even on my ADSL 2+, and there's no sound. I'm set up with just about every codec known to man and dog because of my work, though. Apparently, this stuff is .asx, whatever that is. Oh - the Wiki says The Advanced Stream Redirector (ASX) format is a type of XML metafile designed to store a list of Windows Media files to play during a multimedia presentation. It is used frequently on streaming video servers where multiple ASF files are to be played in succession. Both RTSP and MMS streaming protocols are supported, as well as HTTP. ASX files have MIME type video/x-ms-asf (as do ASF files). So it's a Micro$oft stream. Blecch. Possibly you can find an .asx player for Mac out there if you have a look. cheers Jude Can anyone in the group watch video at the Bloomberg site? I can't :-( http://www.bloomberg.com/index.html?Intro=intro3 Have tried with Safari and Firefox (both latest - not Safari 3 though) and I have latest Flip4Mac installed. BTW there's an interesting 'exclusive' on the iPhone. Seems the buzz has topped the Mustang and Windows 95 (and probably the Edsel too :-) I just wish they'd release the latest Imac instead. Email over Airport Problem
G'day list I can't get Mail.app (or Thunderbird) to work on an iMac connected to the internet via computer to computer Airport. Computer 1 is Intel Core Duo running 10.4.10 and connected directly to internet via ethernet to cable modem (Telstra). Set to share internet connection via Airport. Computer 2 is G4 running 10.3.9 and shares internet over Airport. Works fine. (It also has printers connected to its ethernet port and to its USB port which it shares back to computer 1. Works fine) But can't get mail reader on Computer 2 to connect to either incoming or outgoing mail servers. Tried with .mac mail and with Gmail. Tried Mail.app and Thunderbird. No go. No problem reading mail on web on Computer 2. Is there a way to get this to work? Re: Swap bootable hard drives?
I am not 100% sure on the kernel specifics for Mac OS X, however I would consider myself to be an expert on Linux and although the drive may boot by simply swapping them, the kernel would have been setup to be a single processor kernel and you won't get the benefit from your second processor. I am not sure if there is a way to simply replace the kernel in OS X. Re: Swap bootable hard drives?
Unless I missed something in that article, it didn't help at all. The question isn't whether OS X will support the processor, it is whether an install on a single processor machine can be swapped over to a dual processor machine. I would like to think that Apple have a selection of kernels on the install disks and they select the appropriate one on install. Therefore you won't have SMP support on your existing install...so as I said, it will work, but you won't be able to use both processors. ...but I am no guru on these matters. Howdy from a lurker, Great interface - particularly I like the date/thread toggle - - very clear. A suggestion - only as an interested observer, since I don't participate but simply read the list in arrears as a kind of newsletter: Activate the RSS feed; this would allow lurkers like me to dispense with the list digest/archive shuffle - where I only go to a thread or message if the subject is of interest. The RSS is normally a summary of the message and would also be an alert that the message has been uploaded to the archive. This is terrific for us info-hungry trawlers. Otherwise, could the listmaster add the archive link to the digest feed? Thanks for the opportunity to comment. Certainly you can use it that way, as you can use a built in iSight with Photobooth. cheers, Susan.
