Apple lie! :-)

Even their own support document for Australia and New Zealand says 48
hours. Might be worth a few of us sending Apple a feedback sheet
highlighting that rentals here should be 48 hours.

Re: Boot up sequence: firewire

2008-08-14 Thread Mervyn Giuliana Bond

Jude and Bob
Thank you for comments on this issue.
Comments from users who have had trouble with firewire point to the
port on the computer being the weakness. I have not used a HD
powered from the mains but I suspect the olden days approach would
be even more relevant in that situation.

For myself, I'll err on the side of caution.
Thank you both.
Merv

Personally for my own protection i AVOID connecting and disconnecting
the firewire cable to a powered up external firewire enclosure .

Ah yes, sorry, I assumed when someone plugs something into a
computer that they turn it on after plugging it in. What I was
saying was that the computer doesn't have to be turned on only after
the device is attached.

In the olden days one would turn on external HDs and printers
before booting up the computer. With USB that seems to have gone
by the wayside. However, in a recent topic on WAMUG dealing with
external HDs and firewire a remark/question was made or put
regarding having connected and started up the external firewire
HD before booting the computer. Is this the recommended approach?
I use a portable firewire connected HD for my backups (powered by
the computer). I just plug in and update. Could I be courting
disaster?

Yes but it would require a video capable iPod

Or you can use DVI to S-video adapter plug. I use one for my eyeTV

I think you have a different interpretation of the TO DO function.
This is simply a list of items of things you need to do. They aren't
 date specific.

If you want to have something that periodically reminds you to do
things without appearing on your calendar I suggest you do the
 following.

Create a new calendar (LHS column) and call it TO DO if you wish.
If you need this reminder every Tuesday put the first item in Tuesday
and ask it to repeat weekly.
Set an alarm to this event, wither a sound, sound with message or e-
mail which reminds you of the event
Hide the calendar so that it isn't visible on your screen

This will remind you of the TO DO event every week.

 That's no problem.

However, I'm referring to the To Do Items which appear in a
 vertical pane
to the right of my calendar. Immediately below the Spotlight search
 field.
If I click on one of those items and Get Info, a box comes up with
 options
to change due date etc, but there is no repeat option. If I add a
 new 'To
Do' option, same deal - no repeat option.

How do you go about a creating a repetitive To Do Item? Example,
 let's say
I want to check the letter box every day, and I want to remind
 myself to do
that. I don't want it in my Calendar, because I don't want to have
 to do it
at the same time each day - I just want it in my To Do list. But I
 don't
want to have to add the entry every day. I just want to have a To
 Do item
which pops up each day. (BTW, just an example - I don't really want
 to do
that!). Same as the Task function in Entourage allows you to do.

iCal allows some quite sophisticated repeat options.

When you have enter an item open the Information drawer. (command+i)

You will see an option called repeat - click on it. Your initial

select custom you can incorporate even more complex options. Your
option for repeating each Thursday is actually one of the basic ones
but you could get iCal to repeat every third Thursday of the month if
you went to the custom option.

There are a few ones to do it.
You can get an HDMI to DVI cable, or if you already have an HDMI to HDMI
then Belkin make a really nice adapter:-
http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=418646
Sells for about $29.
Otherwise the cables can sell for anywhere from $40 through to $400+

Hope that helps.

Not So good News

DiskWarrior has successfully built a new directory for the disk named
Macintosh HD. The new directory cannot replace the original
directory because of a disk malfunction.

It is highly recommended that you backup all of your data from the
preview disk.

So I already lost 10 GB of data according to Disk Warrior Preview disk
Mode. So I had begun the backup process in Disk Warrior Preview disk
Mode

What is the best Data recovery software on the Mac?

Data rescue || gets good reports go here for a good price

Regards, Kyle

Which is happy as he will not lose 420GB Of Data

Careful : You don't know what corruption might be in there ! ?

Do you have any clue what may have caused this problem ?

Unless you can explain it do NOT trust anything on that Mac until you
can

build a history of trouble free ops .

Could be dicky hard drive or power supplyOR Power OFF while in
the middle of a process

Looking at your Tiger report I would think Disk Warrior should get
you there

but be prepared for a possible long...ggg session .

Possibly could even be overnight , depends on how corrupted disk
warrior

finds it
