Ok, on to your Mail App. Nuisance. First thanks for sending your
screenshots, I can now see what you mean.
Unfortunately you are probably not going to like what I am going
to tell you.
The width of columns in the Address Book pane in Mail can only be
changed on a per-session basis; after you quit Mail, they will
revert to their original values.
There is no way to set the default width of columns for Address
Book. The same applies to the Signature Prefs columns.

You can't set the default column widths in the Address Book pane
used by Mail or the Signature Prefs; any changes you make are for
that session only.

You could possibly experiment with a different font size.

The Address pane is the one that is the biggest nuisance, as I
use it several times a day.

This little tip might help you: An easy way to add recipients to
the To, Cc, and Bcc fields is to click in the desired field (in a
new email) and click Address Book in the toolbar.
That opens the Address (Book) panel, from which you can 'double
click' a person to have his or her e-mail address inserted.

I'm using Mail v4.1 in Snow Leopard OS X 10.6.1 I notice my
AddressBook opens with a wider 'Group' column than your
AddressBook 'Group' column.

I've attached screenshots of my AddressBook from Mail
Signature Prefs for Mail at opening of Mail for you to see the
slight difference (which is probably due to updated version of Mail).

If I find a plugin or something that might be able to change the
default I will let you know.

2009-09-21 Thread Martin Hill
If you read the discussion document, it indicates that you would be ok
as long as you have the GPS or iPhone with GPS software in a hands-
free style cradle on the dashboard. They want to stop people holding
a phone in the hand or on the knees etc while using hands-free or GPS
software etc which I think is a pretty worthy goal. :-)

Hopefully the actual State legislation reflects this.

-Mart

http://www.ntc.gov.au/filemedia/Reports/ARR8thAmendPackageDiscusPapMay08.pdf

3.10 Rule 299 – Television receivers and visual display units in motor
vehicles
During discussions on rule 300 (mobile phones) the maintenance group
identified that
some new model mobile phones have global positioning system (GPS)
technology. It was
also recognised that there were several GPS devices on the commercial
market which are

portable and could be held in a driver’s hand.
The maintenance group considered the requirement for mobile phones to
be in a fixed
mounted cradle and felt a similar requirement should be made for
portable GPS devices. It
is proposed to amend rule 299 to require that a GPS device must be an
integrated part of

the vehicle or secured in a fixed mounting.

3.11 Rule 300 – Use of mobile phones
State and territory road agencies have raised concern about the
wording of rule 300 of the
Rules in that it does not prohibit the use of a mobile phone, by a
driver while driving, that

is:
• held by the shoulder and neck;
• seated in a cradle and used to send short message service (SMS);
• located on a driver’s knee, hand or the front passenger seat and
used to send SMS or

loud speaker conversation (not near the ear).
Although the rule was modified by the 5th Amendment Package (2005), it
is not considered
that those changes prohibited these additional behaviours. The
original intent of the Rules
was that a driver should not to use a mobile phone while driving,
except by using a
hands-free device. At the time it was not anticipated that some
drivers, while driving,

would circumvent the rule by:
• holding the phone with the neck and shoulder or propped between the
knees;
• holding the phone in the hand, not near the ear, and conducting a
conversation on the

loud speaker facility;
• sending or reading text messages, video messages or e-mails.
The proposed changes are aimed at clarifying the original intent and
explaining when a

mobile phone is permitted to be used by a driver while driving.

Television receivers and visual display units in motor vehicles: it
is envisaged there
will be no adverse impact on drivers should the proposal be approved.
It is considered
most GPS devices are supplied with car kits, such as mountings, and
there would be no
additional cost. If, however, a driver needed to purchase such a
device they are
commercially available at a very minimal cost. The benefit would be
increased safety

for all road users resulting from lessening driver distractions.

Talking and answering questions seems to significantly impact the brain
centres used for driving

(Talking to another adult in the car is not as bad as usually they shut

about to die)

Not sure if anyone's done fMRI's on billboard adverts yet.
Really they should be banning all mobile phone conversations by the
driver whilst driving.

Anyone know what happens if you're using the Tom-Tom iPhone software and
the phone rings? I'm guessing you get lost :)

I do hate the Nanny State that puts in concrete paths with handrails
in Geikie Gorge, drops the speed limit of Leach Hwy in Shelly to 70km/
hr and has red arrows that don't go off at every second traffic light
intersection etc.

However, I have noticed myself much more easily drift all over the
road if I use a handheld mobile phone in the car and one friend drove
his Mazda 929 into the back of a truck when trying to SMS and drive on
the freeway, so there seems to be something that much worse about hand-

be a lot less distracted than when holding it in my hand - why? I'm
not sure, maybe the neurons required to keep my arm in the air tip the
balance(!) but it is definitely the case for me.

As a result I am less critical of this particular bit of legislation

Share with iDVD greyed out in iMovie 09 ?

Now a find that share with iDVD is greyed out.
It was a file from their camcorder that I had to convert to a .MOV

It seems willing to share with Mobile but nothing larger ???

Any ideas how I can get this from iMovie to iDVD ?

From iMovie '09 can you Share to Media Browser?
Then once it is done with that command, open iDVD, go to Media, find

Re: VMWare Fusion $41 till 11.30am today

2009-09-21 Thread Christopher S

Well I've been using Parallels and Fusion on and off from the beginning
initially as my main work PC running Office 2003/2007, corporate apps, Adobe
design apps and for the testing of apps like SketchUp and SolidWorks. Each
version of each app gets better and in some cases overtakes the other one.
So earlier this year Parallels was slightly faster at most tasks than Fusion
see this review:

http://www.mactech.com/articles/mactech/Vol.25/25.04/VMBenchmarks/index.html

That was with VMware Fusion 2.0.1. Fusion is now up to 2.0.5 so it's
probably slightly faster than Parallels.

In terms of features they are so similar. In the early versions Parallels
interface was a bit nicer - kinda Tonka Toyified. Fusion has certainly
caught up now though. Similarly VirtualBox is improving all the time, there
was an update just the other week.

Speaking of VirtualBox it is straightforward to use if nothing goes wrong.
If it does you may have to do a bit of searching on the net or playing
around to sort it out. I suppose this is where its downfall is. Parallels
and VMware's support is pretty good - I've had to contact both and both have
responded quickly. With VirtualBox being a free product you're on your own a
little bit - but hey did I say it's free, and really impressive for a
freebie. My colleagues set up VirtualBox on a complete novice to VMs iMac
and he's really happy with it.

Currently I'm running Parallels 4.0.3846 with Windows 7RC on Snow Leopard
10.6.1 and it's running really well. The only reason I'm using Parallels
over Fusion is that it came as part of a MacUpdate Promo. Otherwise I would
have gone for the Fusion offer this morning.

I wouldn't consider gaming with these VMs however using Bootcamp on a MacPro
is awesome...

Hope this is helpful in some way - sorry for the lack of specifics I'm not
in IT anymore.

Regards,

Chris.

I've only ever run Parallels 3.0 - just because it seemed to be the one

2009-09-21 Thread Roger Kortas

Hi Rob

I would try and steer away from USB if possible? firewire or eSATA
would be much better.

As for how much storage it would depend on the quality you are
recording at and I am sure there will be others on the list that might
be able to give you some pointers?

Depending on your budget there are some raids boxes that might suit
your needs.

When you say direct from the sound desk is that via a mac?

Re: VMWare Fusion $41 till 11.30am today

2009-09-21 Thread Neil Houghton

Hi Chris,

Thanks very much for that feedback. It sounds like you have swapped back and
forth between Parallels Fusion a bit - do you move VMs around when you do
this (ie import pre-existing VMs created in another program) or do you set
up a new VM from scratch each time?

Do all three actually allow you to import VMs from the other two or are
there restrictions on this? (that's how I went from VPC on a PPC Mac to
Parallels on an Intel mac and it was relatively painless in that case).

If you have imported VMs from other programs I woud be interested in your
thoughts as to how well this works between Parallels/Fusion/VirtualBox

initially as my main work PC running Office 2003/2007, corporate apps, Adobe

version of each app gets better and in some cases overtakes the other one.

Re: message from Discus.

2009-09-21 Thread Philippe Chaperon

Hi Everyone,

Bravo Ronni! That has been my experience during the many years of
using Apple's operating software.

I can only say that Apple's OS is not 100% perfect, but is very close
to it. I too have not had any major problems with any of the updates
or major upgrades of the OS, and I am not a 'geek' or 'connaisseur' in
any sense of the words.

I agree that there must be a good planning before adopting a major
upgrade. With the price of hard drives being very reasonable these
days, I have always copied my working 'old' OS using SuperDuper on to
a firewire drive so that I can keep working 'just in case'. However I
have never encountered the 'just in case' situation yet, and still
have my very first OS X sitting on a drive but not used for years now!

Regards to all,

Philippe C.

 Hi Kevin,

Yes, I received this negative email from Discus. I don't agree with their
 assessment of Snow Leopard.
The majority of problems people are having are caused by not doing the
preparation before upgrading their System, and other Vendor's software,
 add-ons, plugins , etc.

It is not up to Apple to make sure non-apple software is compatible with Snow
Leopard it is up to the Vendor.
Most major software companies were very quick to release Snow Leopard
 compatible version of their software.

 This comment:

The trusting people who recently purchased Apple's Snow Leopard and
immediately installed it were greeted with hundreds of terrible bugs.  It
was reckless of Apple not to test their system more thoroughly before
releasing it to millions of paying customers.

Apple not to test their system more thoroughly before releasing it to
millions of paying customers what a load of rubbish that is!

Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard is designed to protect your Mac from certain
incompatible software that can quit unexpectedly or cause other issues in Mac
 OS X v10.6.

When you install Snow Leopard or migrate to Snow Leopard, known-incompatible
software is moved to a folder named Incompatible Software on your hard drive.

Snow Leopard also prevents known-incompatible software from opening.  If you
see an Incompatible software message, contact the software's vendor or
visit their website for a later, compatible version.

Apple certainly with Snow Leopard, have protected people from using
 incompatible software.

 Ronni

VirtualBox

2009-09-21 Thread Clyde McLennan

Hi,
Following on from the helpful discussion and comments about the
three VM programs, I thought I would try the free one, VirtualBox.

No problem installing virtualbox, but didn't get far installing
windows XP.

Came unstuck during the installation when it asked me to press F8
to accept the Windows terms and conditions. Other keys would work on
that page (like page down to read the conditions), and ESC to cancel
(disagree) with the conditions, but I couldn't get F8 to work. Didn't
find anything in the manual that came with VirtualBox.

   Any suggestions ...

 With thanks ... Clyde

With some keyboards (especially laptops), you might find that you have
to hold down the Fn (function) key while pressing the F8 key. This is
because F8 might be assigned to some other function in Mac OS X, like
'Play/Pause'.

I use VirtualBox for running several versions of Windows and Linux,

I think this is a rare issue, so it would be helpful to know what Mac

Wow! Funny that so much other software seems to run just fine...

Switch to Disc Label instead

I don't know why Discus felt they had to write such a negative email
post it to all Discus users, as Discus v4.24 is working just the same
on my Snow Leopard OS X 10.6.1 as it did in Leopard OS X 10.5.8?

With some keyboards (especially laptops), you might find that you have
to hold down the Fn (function) key while pressing the F8 key. This is
because F8 might be assigned to some other function in Mac OS X, like
'Play/Pause'.

I use VirtualBox for running several versions of Windows and Linux,

I think this is a rare issue, so it would be helpful to know what Mac

Hi Clyde,

Check in System Preferences Keyboard - Keyboard Shortcuts to see
what keyboard shortcuts you have set on your Mac.

Normally F8 Activates Spaces (if you have Spaces 'Enabled').

You could take the 'tick' out of the Activate Spaces F8 in Keyboard
shortcuts just until you install XP (if it requires F8).

iphoto gone spoggly

2009-09-21 Thread mince and pud

Hi all

I'd really appreciate advice on this iphoto 6 problem - it's a bit
tricky to explain which is why I'm having no luck with mr Google...

The last few rolls I imported have disappeared - ie, blank thumbnails
and the grey ! when I try to open one. Searching for them by file
number (the thumbnails still have their numbers) fails to find them
anywhere.

If I import another roll from the camera it seems to go in fine, but
it hasn't been stored properly in the library, just in the Imports
folder (in a sub-folder called 2001). If I quit iphoto and re-launch,
it says there are photos in the library that haven't been imported,
would I like to import them? If I say yes, it then asks what to do
with all the duplicates, as if they are in there already! If I say
import them again, I get a set of working thumbnails, but if I click
them I just get !s

(update - after further attempts I now have 2 identical sets of
thumbnails for my latest roll which DO launch the files when clicked.
But they are still in the 2001 imports folder)

any insights appreciated

thanks
alastair

Hello Alastair,

The ! or ? turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the
thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
Try rebuilding the database. Hold down the apple and option (or alt)
keys and launch iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.

Hi Ronda, Bill James,
Did as you suggested (ie, changed the preference) but still no joy.

I'm running on iMac with leopard 10.5.6.

There is no function key (like on many PC's) so couldn't try that
suggestion.

Thanks for the help - at this stage I will stick with Parallels,
but I was keen to try the VirtualBox, but can do without it.

Re: Advice about external hard disk to record live music

2009-09-21 Thread Rob Phillips

Thanks for your advice.

Capture will probably be via a PC. Talking to some other people, I
might have had a simplistic view of the process. If the PC software
captures multiple tracks to disk, we will still need some software to
extract/mix these tracks, and this software or its file format might be
proprietary.

Depending on your budget there are some raids boxes that might suit

When you say direct from the sound desk is that via a mac?

Re: iphoto gone spoggly

2009-09-21 Thread Ronda Brown

When you rebuilt the iPhoto Library did you 'tick' Recover orphaned
photos in the iPhoto Library folder.

In fact did you tick all 5 options?

Searching for the files by name within iPhoto won't find these photos
as they are disconnected photos.

IPhoto has lost the connection to them ... why ...we don't know yet.

Do you have a backup of your iPhoto Library?
If not I would do one before you do anymore messing around ;-)
