Fwd: HP LaserJet 5MP printer and OS X 10.6.2

2009-11-29 Thread David Noel

-- I've upgraded to Snow Leopard, but can't get my LaserJet 5MP
printer to work. I've looked in the SL printer list, and the 5MP
driver is included, but I can't see how to make it appear in the
System Preferences/ Print Fax box. The printer is connected into one
of the ports on my Belkin router, I notice you can't connect a printer
via AppleTalk on 10.6, but my connection isn't via Appletalk, surely?
Any advice much appreciated.

Cheers --

Hi David,

Basically is says you need to set an IP Address to something that is not
currently being used on your Network.
I think your Belkin Router's IP Address is 192.168.2.1 and any computers you
have connecting will be in the range 192.168.2.2 to 192.168.2.xx

E Mac being thrown away

2009-11-29 Thread Peter Faulks

I am putting an E-Mac on the lawn pickup unless anyone wants it (free)

It needs a new hard drive and they are just too messy to replace and
I just don't have time to fix it. If anyone wants it let me know.

You will have to collect from Parkwood after Wednesday it goes on front lawn.

Hi Ronnie --

success yet. I can open up the Belkin Advanced Setup/ LAN/ DHCP
Clients List , this has a table with 3 IP Address entries, 10.1.1.2,
10.1.1.3, 10.1.1.4, the last one points to Host Name 'Macintosh-2'
and has MAC Address 00-1B-63-AC-9A-F8. This is my old G4 iMac. There
was a fourth entry, 10.1.1.5, which my son had set up to talk to his
iPhone, but this disappeared when I accidentally pressed 'Release'.

-- There is a 'New' button which would allow me to try and put the
printer in 10.1.1.5, but I don't know what to put in MAC Address, and
the settings won't save without something there. A little more help,
please?

Afternoon,

You should be able to get the MAC address by printing printer system

Airport Extreme SSID

2009-11-29 Thread Reg Whitely

Hi all WAMUGgers

Is the Airport Extreme's Airport ID the same as its SSID? I'm trying
to tune in a wireless LG Blueray player which asks for it to be
entered manually and I can't get the connection to work.
Alternatively it asks me to press the button on the wireless router to
ID it manually but the only button on the Airport is the reset button.

Then it asks me to say whether it's WPA - WPA2. I've reset the Airport
to WPA2 Personal from WPA/WPA2 Personal, but I'm not sure if it will
work. As I must key in every digit manually on the LG, I don't want to
do this too many times.

WAMUG Meeting Final Reminder: This Tuesday 1 December 2009 (Please Do Not Reply)

2009-11-29 Thread Pete Smith
The end of the year doth fast approach - and the next WAMUG meeting even

G'day again all WAMUGGERS.

Yep - it's nearly time for the last WAMUG meeting of the year, next Tuesday, 1
December 2009.

Topics for discussion are; in no particular order:

1. Parallels 5 (not to be confused with Parallel Lines, that brilliant
Blondie album!);
2.  Grapher (everyone has this, but did you know about it?);
3. New Apple Mouse; and
4. Mail will be revisited (we'll cover some things not covered last time).

Of course, don't forget the question and answer session at the beginning of
every meeting and a cuppa and biscuits at the end.

Prospective members are also very welcome.

(Details are subject to change without notice)

Location: Geology building 312, Curtin University, Bentley.
Time: 7.30pm - 9.00pm
WAMUG meets in the large meeting room just inside the front door of
the building

2009-11-29 Thread Tim Law

Yes the SSID could be Airportus Extremus. Or Galadriel, or Dark Knight, or
Electron Transfer Device. Or given it is the device that knows all the
information in the network and controls it, perhaps your wife's name would
be appropriate. :-)

Numbers such as 00:19:E3:33:3D:7C are also called MAC addresses and used to
identify a specific device.

RapidWeaver, for example, supports MobileMe out of the box, but it also comes

Strange Design Based Problem with CS3 and images chang ing colour when creating PDFs.

2009-11-29 Thread Kelly Duffy

Hi everyone,

I don't know if anyone can help, but I'm using Indesign CS3 on an iMac
running OS 10.5 and having some weird issues with creating a PDF from
a file. If anyone has seen it before I'd love to know what causes it,
especially since it shows differently on both Macs.

It's an InDesign file, and the images are laced in as black TIFs and
then coloured yellow in InDesign, but when I create the PDF they
appear cyan on screen. Well, on this Mac they both appear cyan (there
are 2), on another Mac only one appears cyan and the other still looks
yellow. On a digital printout they print yellow. The colour
separations in the PDF show them as being changed to cyan though, so I
don't even know why the laser printer is printing it yellow.

On a completely unrelated question, does anyone know if it it's
possible to send files and sync the iPhone to a Mac with blue tooth? I
had a look online and found lots of information saying it couldn't be
done, I'm not sure if there are any apps been released to allow it
happen, or something I didn't know. I just bough an iPhone yesterday
and expected it to work with my Mac as well as my Sony Ericsson only
to find out it doesn't!

Thanks,
Kelly

Re: Strange Design Based Problem with CS3 and images changing colour when creating PDFs.

2009-11-29 Thread Ronda Brown

Hi Kelly,

Answering your question about the iPhone Bluetooth capabilities.

Bluetooth can only be used to connect headsets and hands free kits.
No data transfer of any kind.

The iPhone's bluetooth is limited at the moment to bluetooth headsets and car
kits
Even if you would succeed in pairing it you cannot transfer any type of files
from it.

I feel Apple have gone this route as they are determined to keep the iPhone as
secure as they possibly can.

Once you give people the option to lay their phones wide open by say allowing a
phone to be Always visible and connectable as many other phones do, then
you're asking for the onslaught of phone viruses and trojans.

I'm not exactly sure why there's a problem with yellow converting to
cyan, or why it's inconsistent. Maybe you have a corrupt colour
profile at some stage of the process? Also, make sure you're not
applying a spot colour or an RGB colour by mistake (sounds like you're

recolour the TIFF in Photoshop before placing it? Out of curiosity,
what happens if you colour the TIFF as magneta or yellow in InDesign

Hi James,

It's definitely coloured CMYK. I got around it by colouring it in
Photoshop rather than InDesign, but I was just wondering why it
happens, spot colours I need to do in InDesign so I want to sort it

When I change it to magenta in InDesign they PDF as magenta, but still
show up on one of the Macs a cyan!

It's rather strange.

I'm not sure about outgoing rules, you might need to download a
Plugin. What version of Apple Mail are you using

Regarding large amounts of mail, it depends a bit on whether you're
using IMAP or POP3. There's really a world of difference between the
two. I manage about 10 GB of mail with Apple Mail, using IMAP.
Entourage and most versions of Outlook are fatally flawed above 2 GB,
Apple Mail has a different design which does not have this limitation.

James.

Mail does not provide for Rules applied to outgoing messages, but the shareware

 Hi all,

I have just made the jump from Entourage to Apple mail. All seems well so
far, but I am having a little teething problem with rules.

Does anyone know how to create a rule which applies to outgoing mail? I can
make a rule which has incoming and outgoing addresses, but it doesn't
automatically work when sending mail (although I can select MessageApply
Rules to my Sent folder and the mail is dealt with appropriately.

Also, does Mail misbehave when it gets a large amount of mail in it (as in
 several gigabytes)?

 Thanx,

 Andrew

Free webinar / web conferencing solutions on Mac ?

2009-11-29 Thread Steven Knowles

Presented with the usual overload of information via a web search, has anyone
already had good experience with any free web conferencing or webinar solutions
on the Mac? I need to present what I'm doing on my screen to multiple other
parties, these other parties using a variety of Mac and Windows platforms.

I know of Skype screen share, however it seems that Skype is limited to sharing
your screen with only one other party, besides I've found Skype screen share to
be lacking when it comes to overall performance and transmission delays of the
screen activity. I need voice to be carried at the same time as what's on my
screen.

Thankful for any tips.

Cheers, Steven

 Hi Everyone.

Has anyone experience using mobile me as a webside provider- or any
alternative suggestions-, and does anyone know if it is possible to upload
templates from other design software like sandvox ?

Just be aware that MobileMe does not support php, so if you have forms or
anything else that might require php, your site won't work properly.
RapidWeaver, for example, supports MobileMe out of the box, but it also comes
with that warning. I guess this is why iWeb itself does not provide forms of
any sort, probably its major (and fatal, for me) drawback.

Re: mobile me

2009-11-29 Thread Tim Law

Regarding Tim's reply : What means MX Record of domain delegation?

It means that trying to host your domain at MobileMe is going to be a
valuable learning experience!! - unless that is you can your domain name
registrar to make the changes for you. Mine is Melbourne IT and they
wouldn't do it for me.

Put very simply, and this is the extent of my understanding, that when
someone types in www.wamug.org.au the browser goes and searches for the name
www.wamug.org.au in the big internet cohuna's little black book and
alongside that name is the IP address of the actual server that is hosting
that domain name. Then the browser says thank you to the big internet
cohuna, and goes and finds that particular server machine and gets the
information to display to you.

There are a couple of components to the domain name - the viewable web
address, and the email addresses associated with that domain name. I may not
be correct, but the CNAME is the web address and the MX record is the mail
side of things. Entering your domain name at MobileMe is only one part of
the story and AFAIK only sets up their servers ready to accept your domain
name and serve your domain pages correctly.

There are people in ISP and domain registration companies that make these
changes all the time and really know what they are doing. I don't. I was
told I needed to make the changes myself, so used a website called
www.zonedit - link is in my initial posting. I suggest you go there. Create
an account and read their help files. I will be a steep learning curve, but
heck, I managed it so it is not totally impossible. :-)

Hope that helps, and that other more experienced people will guide you much
better than I have.

Tim
