Bogus email: ANZ

2010-03-15 Thread Merv Bond

Hi
This afternoon I received an email purporting to be from the ANZ bank
saying that I had two unread emails. It also said 100 emails only would
by held for me, the recent 100. To read the emails I had to click on a
link, which I did. The link asked for my username and password, so I
stopped and went no further.

I phoned the ANZ and read the letter to them. They confirmed my
suspicions that it was bogus. There suggestion was to delete the email
and run a virus scan and then get back to them. In the mean time they
would put a hold on access to my account. Did that, found nothing.
Phoned and got new access details.

Thought I should alert ANZ users in WAMUG of this scam.

Hi Merv,

I had a similar attack today. It looked like an official update for Adobe
Reader but apparently either sends Mac users an advert for some software.
Apparently under windows it installed spyware on an earlier version.

PLEASE DO NOT CLICK ON ANY OF THE LINKS IN THE E-MAIL BELOW!! I THINK I'VE
DELETED THEM BUT DON'T RISK IT!!

He he...

Isn't it amazing at this stage of development that email clients still
mangle URLs?!

No, Paul, there wasn't a space in the original URL - well not as copied
and
pasted directly from the browser address bar to the email message (and
even
inserted into brackets to try hold it all together!)

However, I have no doubt that when you opened the message you DID find a
space capriciously inserted into the URL - it often happens!

Interestingly:

- When I received my original post back from WAMUG the link was fine,
but
- In the WAMUG archive, the link is broken
- When you got my original post from WAMUG, you obviously found the
link
broken
- When you replied to my post, your reply came back with my link (in
my
quoted message) back to being a working link (both as I received it AND
in
the WAMUG archive)

I would lay bets that amongst list members many received the original
post
with the link working whilst many others found it broken!

At least with the visual indication of the link in the email it is
pretty
obvious if clicking on the link is going to work or not (ie is the whole
URL
showing as the link or only part of it)

One feature I like with modern versions of Safari Firefox is that if
you
copy and paste (all of) an obviously broken link from the email they
seem to
detect the offending space and connect you anyway!

All part of the joys of computers!

Cheers

No, Adrian. There is Final Cut Pro 7 (Final Cut Studio) then there

Re: Final Cut

2010-03-15 Thread Rob Davies

Evening,

Not exactly, separate ideologies of same software.

FCP has been part of Final Cut Studio for a while now even though it holds it's
own version number currently FCP 7.?. Very much a Professional product with
industry standards built in, etc..

FCE is basically an upgrade to iMovie with some editing benefits of FCP mainly
to do with input devices and exportable files via a compressor style product
although reduced somewhat in offerings. LiveType is included I think not sure,
but yes good value if all the bells and whistles of FCS are not needed.

It will edit and transpose to many formats and output devices, how well
compared to FCP not sure, but would be very close

Higher quality formats like Red, 2k, and 4k would not be supported?

Cheers!!

Thanks Ronni, I meant iMovie 09.

Given that Final Cut Studio sells for $1,499 I presume that it has attributes
far in excess of what I need. From what I have read Final Cut Express 4.0
should get me a better result for home movies than iMovie 09.

Re: Problems with deleting/trashing messages

2010-03-15 Thread Daniel Kerr

This used to be a fix sometimes for either Mail (or another email client).
If you have another message you don't mind getting rid of, then highlight
the good message, then highlight the bad message(s).

Then once they are highlighted, delete them the normal way and fingers
crossed they should go, and you should be able to delete them as per normal.
I had to do that a couple of times for clients, but can't remember if it was
Mail or Entourage. :o)

Hope that works.

Kind Regards
Daniel

Restoring lost Address Book Contacts data from Time Machine

2010-03-15 Thread Tim Law

Hello,

I am running 10.5.8 on an iMac G5

All my AddressBook contacts have gone.

I realised things were going wrong when I was syncing my iPhone and
found no data in Address Book on my iMac. Now it's wiped all the
Contacts from the iPhone too. They were there this morning on the
iPhone. I made a change one contact on the iPhone so I know that was
fine at that time.

The iMac and the iPhone sync with MobileMe - gone from there too. :-(

I have Time Machine. :-)

I have gone to /Users/yourusername/Library/Application
Support/Address Book and restored the Address Book folder from mid
yesterday afternoon when I know Address Book was working as I was
sending emails from Mail and Address Book was putting in names.

Still no data showing up :-(

Any tips?

Fortunately I DO have Entourage that I was using until a month or so
ago, so can resurrect my data from there if all else fails, but it's
out of date so is my least preferred option. Things are getting
desperate when I rely on Entourage!!

Thanks
Tim

I see this one come through at least once a week. The correct name for the
legitimate Adobe product is Acrobat Reader, NOT Adobe Reader. In any event,
just use Preview and forget about it.

And just for general reference, your bank is not sending you emails. Any
messages intended for you will be waiting for you the next time you log in to
your bank's website. Any and all emails from your bank (or any other financial
player such as eBay) must be immediately deleted. If you're running Windows
even the simple act of reading the messages can be fatal to your computer . Let
us all as Mac users be thankful that we're not as vulnerable as that!

If you're at all concerned about your bank account, insurance policy, eBay
account, etc, at least log in to those accounts separately to confirm their
status. NEVER click links in these messages, especially one which ask for your
password (an iron-clad guarantee that the message is bogus).

Thanks Alex,

That's very clever.

Unfortunately the only data that is showing is from end December 2009.
My Entourage data is more recent, so I'll use that, but why would the

You are correct. The Macbook (the white polycarbonate model) has no Firewire
port: just two USB 2.0 ports. The 13 Macbook Pro (and the other Macbook Pro
models as well) has a single Firewire 800 port in addition to the USB ports.

Re: Permissions Problem

Hi Joe,

Preferences error can not load PTHPasteboard

This sounds like a PTH problem. It's likely that other customers are
affected. I suggest you contact PTH directly about their product, or
see if it is covered by their online help.

While you are usually welcome to move your PTH preferences to the
trash to resolve the problem, you would of course loose any
personalisation of your product!

I note that PTH provides the following online help:

9. PTHPasteboard PRO launches and then quits a few seconds later, how
do I fix this?
There's a file in Library/Application Support/PTHPasteboard of your
Home directory called Main.Buffer. Delete that and relaunch.

Of course. I remember doing that with other PowerPCs.

Kevin,

Connect the two with Ethernet cable. Make old Mac share its files.
Connect new Mac to the server (old Mac). Download files with the new
Mac.

software from abroad

2010-03-15 Thread mince and pud

Hi all

Sorry if this has been covered before - can't seem to hit the right
search words in the archive. My wife needs to buy Quarkxpress for her
- voluntary - design work for a society. She thought of buying via
friends in the US rather than squandering nearly double the amount
here in Australia. The trouble is, I have a feeling that when you
'activate' the programme it tells Quark where you are in the world
and won't let you do so. And there are no refunds!

Anyone had any experience?

many thanks
alastair
