Re: Skype

2010-09-20 Thread Neil Houghton

Hi Bill,

Have you tried deleting the skype item(s) in Keychain?

Was the problem exactly the same after you did this?

Also, have you run Keychain First Aid? - you can verify/repair your keychain
configuration from the Keychain Access program.

Cheers

Re: Skype

2010-09-20 Thread Ronda Brown
Hi Bill Neil,

Bill, check you only have one version of Skype on your computer, and it is in
Applications.
The current version is 2.8.0.851, you can download it from here:
http://www.skype.com/intl/en/get-skype/on-your-computer/macosx/

Make sure Skype is not Open (Active) whenever you install a new version of
Skype.

Bill Neil, Skype does not store password directly. Instead it stores the
encrypted hash of the password!

The Skype server has a private key, and distributes that key's public
counterpart with every copy of the software.
As part of user registration, the user selects a desired username and password.
Skype locally generates public and private keys.
The private key and a hash of the password are stored as securely as possible
on the user's computer (in Keychain).

Then a 256-bit AES-encrypted session is established with the Skype server. The
client creates a session key using its random number generator.
The Skype server verifies that the selected username is unique and that follows
Skype's naming rules.
The server stores the username and a hash of the hash of the user's password
[H(H(P))] in its database.
The server now forms and signs an identity certificate for the username that
binds the username, its verification key and the key identifier.

You can optionally set Skype to remember your Skype Name and Password on this
computer. This feature is convenient but should only be used in circumstances
where you control access to the computer.
Never use this option on a public computer or one for which you cannot monitor
use.
You can change this setting at any time from the Skype program by going to the
“Skype” menu and selecting “Preferences”.

Cheers,
Ronni

Good afternoon all,

iMac i7 (27') OS 10.6.4, this problem seems to have started while using
Microsoft Office 2008 and I think PowerPoint.

When any item in the main menu bar is selected a blank page with the word
Characters in the header bar and the little rotating wheel (not the coloured
ball) in its centre momentarily appears on the screen, there is a delay of a
few seconds before the selected item responds. If an application (any

opens. Office has been removed with the Office uninstaller but the problem
persists.

Does anyone have a clue as to what is causing this please?

Re migration from eMac to newer iMac

2010-09-20 Thread Stephen Chape
I have just used the migration facility for the first time to migrate my step
daughter's
eMac data over to a 2GHz 17 inch iMac.

Everything went fine, however she called me last night to say that although all
her
photos are all in the iPhoto library, the Albums all show blank spaces where
the photos
should be.

I have been to have a look yet and will not make it there until the weekend,
but any ideas
from anyone would be welcome ?

Fortunately I had not deleted the iPhoto folder from the old eMac yet.
I am at present copying the iPhoto library folder to a USB thumb drive.

Any idea what will happen if I simply copy this over the one on the iMac (her
new Mac) ?

Hi Stephen,

You don't say what version of iPhoto or OS X ...

But Yes, you could:
A). Copy the iPhoto Library Folder from the Pictures Folder on the old machine
to the Pictures Folder on the new machine.
B). Then launch iPhoto.

Or, before you can get there on the week-end, your Step Daughter could try to
'Rebuild iPhoto Library'.

1. Quit iPhoto if it is open.
2. Hold down the Command and Option keys on the keyboard.
3. Open iPhoto.
4. Keep the keys held down until you are prompted to rebuild the library.
5. A dialog will appear with rebuild options. Select the options you want to
use.(I suggest selecting all options).
6. Click Rebuild to begin the rebuild process.

This may take a few minutes to complete.

Hi Adrian,

I would imagine it's something left over from Microsoft Office 2008 has caused
this, but you uninstalled Office 2008 using the Uninstaller?

You could try this:
Go to ~/Library/Preferences then move the com.apple.systemuiserver.plist file
to the Trash.

~ (Tilde) represents your Home Folder.

Restart your iMac.

If that doesn't solve it:

Try booting in Safe Mode:

1. Be sure the computer is shut down.
2. Press the power button.
3. Immediately after you hear the startup tone, press and hold the Shift key.
Tip: The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone
but not before.
4. Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple and progress indicator
(looks like a spinning gear).

You will see Safe Boot on the login window.
5. Then login and wait till everything is loaded, then select restart from
Apple (at top left corner) drop-down menu.

I had not even ventured into keychain country before. ( the app)
Lots of irrelevant stuff including 2 Skype entries.

All seem functional and Skype minds its own business now.

The thing is, Bill says he hits Deny rather than Allow and

Of course, Bill might not really care - given that this provides

If you are like me and need to know these things ;o)

Have you tried opening keychain and searching out any skype

When you find the relevant skype item(s) you can double-click it

Hello Stuart,

I had made a mental note NOT to assist you anymore on WAMUG. My
reasons being:
Your attitude is abupt, you don't use proper WAMUG Mailing list
etiquette or common good manners, and rarely give enough information
of the issue.

You never reply back to WAMUG list to let the list know that what we
have suggested to solve all your problems has worked, so if others
experience the same they will know what to do.
You never say Thank you for all the effort we put into solving
all your problems.
You don't do any research of your own, your attitude is Why should
I use my time to solve my problems when I have WAMUG people to do it
all for me.

We have given so much of our time and knowledge to you and I for one
am becoming tired of your attitude that we are here purely to act as
your Personal IT Consultants.
Others on list appreciate what we do to help solve their problems,
but you just take it for granted.

I try to give as much time as possible to help WAMUG Mailing list
members, but people like you, people who don't appreciate what we do
for them, I have had a Gut Full of.

Have you even bothered to read the WAMUG Guidelines and Etiquette?
The link is at the bottom of every WAMUG message.

Re: Brother colour laser printers

2010-09-20 Thread Chris Griffiths
My wife has a dance school and we bought Brother printers because they
were cheap and we just needed a stop gap until we could afford more
efficient, expensive printers. This proved to be a big mistake. For
the cost of the cartridges over a 3 month period we spent at least
twice what a 'good' printer would cost. The Brothers turned out to be
VERY expensive. One day I said enough is enough and literally
unplugged the Brothers and through them in the bin and replaced them
with one Xerox ($550, cartridges $185 or so). Do you know that we have
not had to replace the cartridge (apart from the original; they are
always low with toner) since we bought it. Brilliant!

Hope this helps

Parental Controls

2010-09-20 Thread Crisp, Peter
All, I bought two Macbooks (the black one previous to the current white
one) running Leopard for my two kids (9 7) a little while back. I want
to set them up so they can't wreck the build so I presume I set up an
Admin account for me and a User account for each of them respectively on

want to make sure the sites they visit, deliberately or inadvertently,
are suitable for the age. I believe Parental Control might give me
sufficient control over this but I am interested if others out there
have experience in this and have any tips from your experiences to date.

Are there any good third party programs (Net Nanny, et al) out there?

Thanks for any tips.

Hi Peter,

Firstly I must emphasise … Nothing, and I mean nothing beats supervising your
kids while they are using The Net.

Setup each computer with Administrator Account for yourself and setup a
'Managed with Parental Controls' Account for each of your kids.
Parental controls let you manage your kids use of the computer, the
applications on it, and the Internet.

The Parental Controls preferences are on five sections, each of which is
labeled by a button at the top of the pane.
System: Determines if the account is managed or if it uses 'Simple Finder', and
lets you choose which applications the account's user can run.
Simplified Account: Uses 'Simple Finder', this gives a simplified view of the
finder, with limited menu options, for younger users, or for those who you want
to prevent from accessing all the functions of a normal account. Once you have
made this choice, you can still apply the rest of the Parental Control settings.
Limit Application Access: Whether you check use Simple Finder or not, you can
limit a user’s access to applications on the Mac.
Content Controls: Set controls for two types of content, that which is
accessible from Dictionary, and that which users can access
via Safari or other Web browsers.
Dictionary controls: To prevent a user from accessing “inappropriate content.
(This I feel is rather useless, as nothing prevents a kid from looking up
inappropriate words in a dictionary book, or searching on the Web).
Web site restrictions: The Parental Controls preferences offer you limited
restrictions for Web site access. These controls affect any program that
accesses the Web, whether it is Apple’s Safari Web browser; other browsers such
as Firefox; or even other applications that can access the Web, such as RSS
readers. You have three options:
1. Allow unrestricted access to websites: This places no controls over Web
access.
2. Try to limit access to adult websites automatically: This uses a built-in
set of filters to attempt to block access to sites with adult content. When a
site is blocked, the Web browser displays a page, explaining why it was
blocked, and offering to add the site to the list of allowed sites.
3. Allow access to only these websites: If you select this radio button, you
will drastically limit the sites that your children can access. By default,
Apple includes a handful of kid-friendly sites (but I would not recommend
'YouTube' to be a place to let young children roam unchecked), but you can add
your own as well:
Mail iChat Controls: All you can do here is limit which correspondents your
user can email or chat with via Apple’s Mail and iChat
applications (it does not apply to other software).
Time Limits: you can also set time limits so your user can access the Mac only
for a limited amount of time on weekdays and on weekends. In addition, you can
prevent access between certain times—between bedtime and morning, for
instance—on school nights and on weekends. To access time limits, click the
Time Limits button in the Parental Controls preference pane.
Logs: When you activate parental controls for a user, no matter what type of
controls you apply, your Mac keeps a log of the Web sites that user visits. If
you have content limitations set, it will also keep a list of sites that have
been blocked. If you have limited your user’s access to applications, it will
list applications that the user has launched, as well as those that have been
blocked, and if you’ve limited iChat access, it will show all chat attempts
made with people not in the user’s whitelist.
You can view these logs to see what your users have been accessing, and what
has been blocked; for instance, this is useful if you want
to know what Web sites they’ve been trying to visit.

All the above information is taken from my purchased copies of Take Control of
Users Accounts in Leopard Take Control of Users Accounts in Snow
Leopard.

A Video on Parental Controls can be viewed here:

There are third-party software solutions as well.
A good site with information about Internet Safety for Children is:

Something that *everyone should consider* whether you have kids or not is a
*secure DNS service* like opendns.com.

The DNS service usually provided by your ISP *does not provide any security*
.

This service sits between you and the internet and warns you if you are
following a link that is redirecting you to possible phishing and malware
sites.

You can also turn on a reasonable level of parental control filtering and
logging as well if you wish.

I heard about this from a security researcher who was testing a windows
Malware app. He deliberately ried to get his test PC infected but could not
then remembered he was using opendns. When he switched to his standard DNS
service he had malware galore.

Sure we can live with smug assurance that our Macs are malware proof
(hopefully... for now) but phishing is still a risk, as is the possibility
that smart alec kids will find a way to disable the parental control
software installed on your computer.

Of course nothing is fool proof and I second Rinni's statement *Nothing,
and I mean nothing beats supervising your kids while they are using The Net.

All, I bought two Macbooks (the black one previous to the current white

account for me and a User account for each of them respectively on the two
machines. They are also using the internet for kid’s games but I want to
make sure the sites they visit, deliberately or inadvertently, are suitable

over this but I am interested if others out there have experience in this
and have any tips from your experiences to date.

Are there any good third party programs (Net Nanny, et al) out there?

 Thanks for any tips.

 Hi Peter,

Firstly I must emphasise … *Nothing, and I mean nothing beats supervising
your kids while they are using The Net.*

Setup each computer with Administrator Account for yourself and setup
a 'Managed with Parental Controls' Account for each of your kids.
Parental controls let you manage your kids use of the computer, the
applications on it, and the Internet.

The Parental Controls preferences are on five sections, each of which is
labeled by a button at the top of the pane.
*System:* Determines if the account is managed or if it uses 'Simple
Finder', and lets you choose which applications the account's user can run.
*Simplified Account: *Uses 'Simple Finder', this gives a simplified view
of the finder, with limited menu options, for younger users, or for those
who you want to prevent from accessing all the functions of a normal
account. Once you have made this choice, you can still apply the rest of the
 Parental Control settings.
*Limit Application Access: Whether you check use Simple Finder or not, you
can limit a user’s *access to applications on the Mac.
*Content Controls: *Set controls for two types of content, that which is
accessible from Dictionary, and that which users can access
via Safari or other Web browsers.
*Dictionary controls: *To prevent a user from accessing “inappropriate
content. (This I feel is rather useless, as nothing prevents a kid from
looking up inappropriate words in a dictionary book, or searching on the
 Web).
*Web site restrictions: *The Parental Controls preferences offer you
limited restrictions for Web site access. These controls affect any program
that accesses the Web, whether it is Apple’s Safari Web browser; other
browsers such as Firefox; or even other applications that can access the
Web, such as RSS readers. You have three options:
*1. Allow unrestricted access to websites:* This places no controls over
 Web access.
*2. Try to limit access to adult websites automatically:* This uses a
built-in set of filters to attempt to block access to sites with adult
content. When a site is blocked, the Web browser displays a page, explaining
why it was blocked, and offering to add the site to the list of allowed
 sites.
*3. Allow access to only these websites:* If you select this radio button,
you will drastically limit the sites that your children can access. By
default, Apple includes a handful of kid-friendly sites (but I would not
recommend 'YouTube' to be a place to let young children roam unchecked), but
you can add your own as well:
*Mail iChat Controls: All you can do here is limit which
correspondents your user can email or chat with via Apple’s Mail and iChat
applications (it does not apply to other software).*
*Time Limits: you can also set time limits so your user can access the Mac
only for a limited amount of time on weekdays and on weekends. In addition,
you can prevent access between certain times—between bedtime and
