Re: Telstra Mentor for Iphone
Good advice, thanks Glenn. Sometimes though it seems such a hassle to double check everything and everyone! Especially when we can usually find someone at the WAMUG site who knows something about nearly everythingThis personal touch means so much more somehow. Peta On 14/01/2011, at 12:55 PM, Glenn Nicholas wrote: The web page clearly shows Telstra has this programme in place, and they do say Our Telstra Mentor service gives you expert advice on how to get the most out of your new Next G™ handset in a complimentary, personalised one hour session. So it seems the 1 hour session should be free. Even though this session seems legitimate, I think Telstra has set things up to invite abuse at some point in the future. Someone could easily call up pretending to be a Telstra mentor, answer some questions to build trust and then try for confidential info - perhaps asking for login details or potentially credit card details. Social engineering is a popular way of getting people to part with confidential information - it makes it easier for scammers if corporations teach their customers to trust unsolicited calls. With identity theft such a major problem, if someone calls you out of the blue and you have no way of knowing who they are, if it comes to the point where they want you to disclose information you should ask how to reach them via a company phone number you can check out independently. For example, on the Telstra Mentor site they include For more information on Telstra Mentor please call 1300 783 343. So if you did get a call from a Mentor and they did ask you for any information (email address included), maybe it would be better to call the mentor back via that number. Nowadays we feel uneasy about the possibility of scams, and so although this seemed to be legitimate and probably is, I have not heard of a Telstra mentor from anyone. Yes, we do not want to be paranoid, but He asked me for my email address, which I did give to him, and he offered to help me with any problems that I may be having with the new phone. I explained that it was not a good time for me just then so we ended the call. He sent me an email shortly after this. The email tells me how to check the data usage on my iPhone. He also gave me instructions on how to make the phone ring longer. Just now, as he had also told me would happen, I received a text message - which I am meant to respond to rating his helpfulness. Has anyone else had such a phone call or is this perhaps a scam? Hopefully not! Looking forward to comments from the WAMUG group! IPad overseas
My thanks to those who responded to the query about using iPad overseas. From the advice given it would seem the safest thing would be to remove the Telstra SIM card before departure and then see what is on offer at my destination, in this case France. Programme to download info from iphone?
Hi All I'm heading to USA next week and want to unlock my iphone 3 so that I can put in a USA sim card. But I need to firstly download all my contacts, apps etc (have already done the music) onto my Mac. Then when phone is unlocked, I'll put it all back on. Did a Google searcgh and one suggestion is to buy an app called PhoneView. I've just tried the demo version and it seems to work OK but obviously the demo version is limited. It's only about $20 to buy - is this necessary or are there other apps that are free? Re: Programme to download info from iphone?
Hi Denise I have an iPhone 3G which is unlocked (originally locked to Optus) into which i put a UK sim when travelling to the UK. All contacts apps etc remain on the iPhone and are not connected with the sim card. Your ihone backs up to iTines each time you sync with iTunes so all setting/contacts/music etc remains intact. I have PhoneView which i have used to retrieve sms text message from my iPhone but it is not necessary to use it when swapping sim cards. Unless I am missing something in your message, i don't think the US sim card will be any different to using a UK sim card in an Australian un-locked iPhone. Have a good trip. Re: Programme to download info from iphone?
Hi Denise, Jane's advice is correct. A SIM card (Subscriber Identity Module). The SIM holds personal identity information, phone number. Basically all the SIM does is carry your account information. The iPhone 3G 3GS use SIM card iPhone 4 uses a Micro-SIM card. SIM cards are used with carriers that operate on the Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM) Sent from Ronni's iPad On 15/01/2011, at 7:37 AM, Susan Hastings susanhasti...@me.com wrote: Jane's advice is good from my overseas experience too. Sev, You are not alone. I get the same run-around when trying to adjust a Canon printer's settings, except that the requested change does not happen at the end. Re: lpadmin Password
Hi Severin Ray, The solution is to make the admin group, which usually has your user account as a member, a member of the lpadmin group 1. Open the Terminal application, located in Applications Utilities, and type the following (or copy and paste the following line into Terminal) dseditgroup -o edit -p -a admin -t group _lpadmin 2. Then press the Enter key. 3. You will be prompted for your password. Enter your password and you should see a message about a change was made. 4. Quit Terminal 5. Restart the computer and printer.
