Re: ADSL2+ for Joe Baker
I don't mean to be annoying, but part of Joe Baker's question was about getting started with mobile phones, sim cards, etc. This describes my situation. I have never had a mobile phone because my house is in an area that has no mobile coverage except from Telstra. Telstra treated us very badly in the past and I am determined to avoid them as much as possible. I now have a new iPad with 3G capability (and I would like to buy an iPhone): my thought is to buy a prepaid sim card for the iPad. The plethora of plans and 'deals' is mind boggling. Perhaps the question to WAMUG should be, are there any good sources of information about these matters, tutorials, etc. Pat Now I am a person who has sort of been left behind in certain areas. For example I do not have a mobile phone and would not even know how to use it. Or know about the difference between WiFi and 3G, or about so called plan offer by carriers, or what sim cards are, how applications are brought etc? Point is - what ise best, WiFi or 3G or both and what other things do I need to do the above. Re: ADSL2+ for Joe Baker
Check out the Whirpool forums Sometimes they have good information, other times its requires a bit of digging before you find the 'good stuff' A lot of the time it comes down to double checking the fine print associated with the plans I think one of the first things that I would recommend doing is trying to work out how much data you would use Would 1gb be sufficient, or maybe 500mb etc etc...i know its hard to do, but it can help narrow down the selection by removing the 'too little' and the 'far too much' Ash On 19/05/2011, at 2:49 PM, Pat wrote: I don't mean to be annoying, but part of Joe Baker's question was about getting started with mobile phones, sim cards, etc. This describes my situation. iPad provider plans
Hi Pat, I've changed the subject for your email so that people can better respond to your question. I have a Telstra Pre paid sim, on which I've gone for 365 day option so that i am not having to cope with month to month problems ( renew before it expires or lose whats left, then have so much credit that you can never actually use it.) Whirlpool is a great source of information on prepaid plans by actual users. Re: iPad provider plans
Thanks, Susan, Ashley and Ronni, The Lifehacker table is useful - I will have to explore further. Perhaps I can ask another question about the unfamiliar jargon of this technology that is new to me: In the table, the various plans have a column for 'Data'. I understand that this is the amount you can consume before incurring excess charges. Then there is a column that lists 'Setup' charges and another column says that 'Setup includes X amount of Data' - what does this mean? If, for example, the 365 day Telstra plan has a 12 GB limit and a $30 setup cost that includes 3 GB of data. Do you end up with a total of 15 GB of data? Or am I on the wrong track here? it was 1.7mbps, whatever that means. But I find 3G quite fast, we used a 3G hotspot whilst waiting for our Iinet account to be set up at our new house, and web browsing and downloading of stuff on iTunes was quite useful. You can use Skype video on 3G. I would say that on normal web browsing you won't see much difference between being on home wireless or on 3G on the iPad, if it's much slower it suggest a problem. Re: iPad provider plans
I find the Telstra plans quite good. I'm not a massive fan of Telstra myself to be honest, but to be they do have one of the best coverage for in and around Australia. For the times I've been to Albany with it and to my sister's farm in the middle of nowhere about 45mins out of Katanning the coverage has been great. I can't fault it, or the speed of it. I, like Susan, ended up going with the $150 for 12GB for 12 months. I started with the $20 for 1GB plan which I never went over, but found I was topping it up each month anyway. I then sat and looked at it and thought, even if I just top it up for 6 months like that, in half a year I have spent $120. So why not spend $150 and get a full years coverage. And I'll barely touch 12GB, so that's not going to be a problem. Personally, I think if you're going to keep topping it up before you go places then that can work out a better overall option. If you're at home and using it on a wireless network (Wi-Fi) then you're not using your data anyway, you're using your local wireless networks (ISP) data. So this can help it as well. Eg for me here at home I'm with iinet with 400GB of data per month, so using it here is not a problem. Once I take the iPad out of range (if I can ever get it off my 2.5 year old, or Wife,..or friend staying with us for that matter,...lol) then it uses the Telstra data. They give you a local log in page as well, so you can always check what you're using roughly also. But yes lots of plans, lots of info - always hard to try and decide. I've said to most clients that get iPads. If you're not sure at least you can just start with one company and see how it goes for a month or two. If it's slow or you don't like their network coverage, you're not tied into a contract (unlike mobile phone plans), so you can just try another company. Most people I know end up going with Telstra if they are at all travelling in and around Australia (or even just WA). They all find the coverage the better option and the plans aren't too bad. (Coverage comes at a little bit more of a cost then some other plans, but then if you're out somewhere,..you just want it work.). Just my 2cents worth. Others may have different info or advice :o)) Kind regards Daniel On 19/5/11 10:38 PM, Susan Hastings susanhasti...@me.com wrote: it was 1.7mbps, whatever that means. e-mac problem
Hi everyone, Can anyone solve this problem for me?. When my e-mac has been switched off at the wall socket for a couple of days, I get this message, Your computerclock clock is set to a date before March 24th 2001, this may cause some applications to behave erratically, Please use the date time preference panel to set the clock manually. When I go into time preference the date is 1971, I then reset clock, date, time zone hasn't changed, I then try to get on the internet only to find that I can't, I have to re-configure my internet connection including password, even though it was supposedly saved in keychain, If the computer is just shutdown, with the power still going to it then everything is fine. This problem has been bugging me for sometime now I am not too bothered for myself as I have just ordered a new imac, but will soon be passing the e-mac to my son. e-mac power pc G4 1.25GHZ 512mb Ram Thanks Derek -- The WA Macintosh User Group Mailing List -- Archives - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/archives.shtml Guidelines - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtml Unsubscribe - mailto:wamug-unsubscr...@wamug.org.au

Re: e-mac problem
Hi Derek, Yes, the PRAM (or backup) battery is dead, probably from the computer being unplugged from wall power for an extended period. Instructions for installing the new battery are here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3005 The battery is a 1/2AA 3.6V lithium.
