Michael, I agree completely with what you write. I hated to do it, but I 
decided to stick with Yosemite (and I wish I had stuck even farther back.) 
Apple is really losing the plot. Maybe it’s just change for change’s sake.

Ronni,

I went through the select and deselect  in iCloud.  The results:-

If selected I do see my contacts 

If NOT selected I do not see my contacts

I checked again with Time machine - Contacts is not there in the recent back 
ups.

I think the best way might be re-build Contacts with iCloud deselected. (so far 
that works nicely)

I only use iCloud for “Find my Phone”  and “Calendar" anyway.

insistent. I get pestered with messages about updates to iOS but can't work out 
a safe way of finding out before I download and install what the update will 
actually do. I feel as if the update has already been downloaded - that's the 
inference I draw from messages telling me the update is ready to install.

I think I have it sorted out.   Looks like the contacts are only in iCloud, so 
when I delesect iCloud the contacts all disappear.

The apps are there all right.   BUt see below:

You Home Folder Library - NOT the Hard Drive Library
The ~ tilde represent your Home User Library which is hidden.
1. In the Finder, choose GO > Go to Folder dialog
Copy and paste 
~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook
into that dialog box

Then when it shows - leave the resulting window OPEN
Then go to 'Enter Time Machine' in the Menu bar at the top of your desktop
Then Select a backup date in the Time Machine backup 
Then when Time Machine shows the 'AddressBook' folder window
The window will show all the data that the AddressBook folder contains 
Underneath you will see two buttons 'Cancel'  and 'Restore'
Click Restore.

I'll send you offlist in another email a screenshot of the window you should 
see.

Ok Bill,

You said you have Time Machine Backups
Quit all applications, or at least - Quit Mail and Contacts.

If you need to Restore from Time Machine backup:

This folder needs to be restored:

~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook

Open the Library folder in your home folder by holding down the option key and 
selecting
  Go ▹ Library from the Finder menu bar. 
Navigate in the usual way to the item indicated 

Enter Time Machine 
Then Go to ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook and Restore the Address 
Book content from a Time Machine backup
Copy the entire contents of the Address Book folder from the backup and 
overwrite the contents of this folder on your system drive.

Once the Restore is complete, Relaunch Contacts and you should see your 
contacts listed.

Did both.  There is nothing there either way except the one contact I put in 
this am.   Also when typing email reciripient names, they usually come up but 
that seems to be at fault as well ( several regulars missing)
