Re: Apple Discount card

Hi
I got it twice as well. Checked the email source and the website it was
pointing to was a hacked site in Norway. Looked authentic, but too good to
be true. Pay $9.00 for $100 credit.

Hi Ken
You should try resetting the cuda/pmu
See <http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1939> for instructions.
Remember this happening on a few of our G5s a long time ago when we had
powerfailures.
They would start up with fans roaring and no screen.
Hope it helps

FW: Corrupt files on Mac Pro

2011-06-19 Thread Frank Salleo

A message from Pat Scott

-- Forwarded Message
From: Bill Scott
Reply-To:

To: Frank Salleo
Subject: Corrupt files on Mac Pro

Hi, Frank,
I'm having trouble sending this letter to WAMUG - I need some advice
very urgently. I tried sending it from Bill's PC laptop, but they won't
accept it from this unknown sender. Would you forward it to them,
please? That would be much appreciated.

To WAMUG,
I'm having a very bad day. It started by not being able to access the
internet. Had a long chat with iiNet and established there is nothing
wrong with our connection.

Second problem - in checking Mail accounts, I opened Keychain. It gave
me the first 2 passwords with no argument, then suddenly, it demanded my
keychain password and refused to accept it.

So I tried using the iPad. At first, it connected to both the internet
and Mail, but now it seems to have caught the infection, whatever it is,
and no longer will connect. It puts up the message 'Incorrect username
or password'.

Then I got out an old Mac laptop that had been in retirement. Exactly
the same thing happened - at first, it would connect with the internet,
and I began composing this letter. Then things got strange again, and
it no longer connects. I will transfer the letter to a text file and
transport it by Flash Disk to my husband's PC and try to sent it.

So the problem seems to originate with the 3-year old Intel Mac Pro,
dual 3.2GHz Quad Core, 16 GB RAM running OS 10.6.7. I repaired
Permissions, but can't think of anything else useful to do.

Suggestions will be gratefully received!

Pat

Mail problems

2011-01-02 Thread Frank Biundo
Hello All

I am having a major problem with Mail.
All of a sudden it is asking for a password to the mail server which it
rejects every time so I am unable to receive or send.

Luckily my iPhone still pushes the emails to me through MobileMe

I have gone into Mail/Ppreferences/Accounts and reset the password with no
luck.

It is an IMAP account that has been working without problems for nearly 4
yrs.

I have checked the forums and tried Resetting the Pram, Repairing
Permissions, Verifying the Disk and deleting all references to this password
in Keychain.

If anyone has had a similar problem to this and has resolved it I would very
much like to know your solution.

Many Thanks

Frank

Re: G5 PPC Tower - Startup light flashing problem

2010-08-12 Thread Frank Salleo

Hi
I remember my G5 doing that when it went off during a power failure.
Resetting the power management (cuda switch) fixed it. The instructions are
at
 <http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1939>
This is a last resort and resets your hardware back to default values. If it
doesn't work it is normally a hardware fault.

Iphone purchase in the US

My brother in Law is going to the US in a few days for a holiday and he was

I am not sure if they are locked to AT & T or if there are any other
restrictions to him using it over here.

Laser Printer

2010-03-21 Thread Frank Biundo

Hello All

Is anyone using a Colour Laser Printer that you may recommend, with or
without scanning capabilities, that works with Snow Leopard and has good page
output for the cost of the toners / drum.

My current HP 2840 costs me about $650.00 for a set of toners and a drum
every 4500 pages or so and that is non genuine toners as well.

There must be something cheaper than this surely, I hope.

Re: Upgrade to Leopard printing problems

Hi
I could not get mine working either. We have 3x R230 printers. Printing
on paper is fine. Won't work on Cds. I tried drivers from the epson UK and
US sites with no luck. It is the epson Print CD program that wouldn't work.

Have resorted to using Disc Cover 2 RE which comes with Toast Titanium and
the Leopard r230 printer driver. Works from Toast ver 7 to 9. Although on
one imac it would only work with ver 8.

Bigpond ISP

2008-10-12 Thread Frank Biundo
Hello Wamugers

I was wondering if anyone is with Bigpond and can tell me how they are with
their service and support especially for Mac users.

I have regularly been hounded by Telstra over the years to go back to them
with my broadband and home phone but they have never been competitive until
now. The deal they are offering me now will save me about $40.00 a month
with unlimited free local calls.

Thanks in Advance.

I have checked out the Eneloop batteries on the various sites but Amazon

Any suggestions on where the best place to get them is?

Re: Digital camera advice

2008-06-02 Thread Frank Biundo
Hi Tony

I would recommend the Canon G9. An amazing point and shoot camera with many
features.
You should be able to get it for $600. It has a 12 Megapixel sensor, 6x
optical zoom, large 3" LCD screen, optical image stabilizer, advanced image
presets and can shoot in RAW as well as JPEG.

I take photos for a living using large heavy DSLR's.
I have been looking for a small point and shoot for holidays and general
photos but still want good quality shots. The G9 is the best I have found
under $1000. I don't have one yet but have tested one at a retail outlet.

While I am photoshoping I listen to a number of different photography
podcasts and the G9 gets a lot of favourable mentions.

Happy shooting.

Cheers

Frank

Speech recognition

2007-11-25 Thread Frank
Has anyone any experience of iListen or any other speech recognition
software.

The distributors don't appear very user friendly as they wont give me a demo
or lend me the software to try. They expect me to take it on trust.

Is ViaVoice ported to OS 10.4 yet or likely to be?

Voice Perfect was very impressive, but only works on PCs

Any comments or suggestions?

Re: Unlocking a different account in Users

2007-06-22 Thread Frank Salleo
Hi David
One way around this is to use the drop box in
HardDisc/Users/name/public/dropbox. ie you can put a copy of your files into
his area but only he can see them.

This Drop Box folder has the permissions set so that anyone can copy (write
only) files to it. You then have to log in as the other user to get them
out.

The point is to keep files secure.

Cheers

Signatures in Mail.

2007-04-19 Thread Frank Biundo
Hi WAMUGers

I am wondering if anyone can help me with signatures in Mail.
Up until now I have had a signature in mail with comprised of text and a
logo in the form of a GIF image.
The company that I am working for now want the static GIF image replaced
with an animated logo that has been provided to me in the form of a html
file.

This came with the following instructions for windoze users
³Save the HTML Attachment on to your PC and then to set up Outlook just go
to: Tools > Options > Mail Format > Stationary Picker > and use the file as
a Template.²

I have tried substituting the GIF for with the html but only get the
background image without the animated wording.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Re: 10.4.2 and Windows security

2005-07-22 Thread Frank Salleo

We had this problem when we went to 10.4. Apple changed to encrypted
passwords. Many windows systems use plaintext passwords. Explanation and fix
from Apple Knowledge Base below. Works for us.
Cheers
Frank

Mac OS X 10.4: Error -36 alert displays when connecting to a Windows server
Mac OS X 10.4: Error -36 alert displays when connecting to a Samba or
Windows server

After upgrading from Mac OS X 10.3.x to Mac OS X 10.4, you may get an error
message when you try to connect to a Samba or Windows (SMB/CIFS) server. A
Samba or Windows (SMB/CIFS) server includes servers operating on Microsoft
Windows and other operating systems that use Samba for SMB/CIFS services.

If the connection is unsuccessful, the following error message may appear:

The Finder cannot complete the operation because some of the data in
smb:// could not be read or written. (Error code -36).

If you check the Console (/Applications/Utilities/), you will also see this
error message:

mount_smbfs: session setup phase failed

This error can occur if your Mac OS X 10.4 client is trying to connect to a
Samba or Windows (SMB/CIFS) server that only supports plain text passwords.
If you do not see the above message in the Console, you are not experiencing
this issue and should try normal troubleshooting to isolate the source of
the issue.

Unlike Mac OS X 10.3, the Mac OS X 10.4 SMB/CIFS client by default only
supports encrypted passwords. Most modern Samba or Windows (SMB/CIFS)
servers use encrypted passwords by default, while some Samba servers might
have to be reconfigured.

You should consider contacting the owner or system administrator of the
Samba or Windows (SMB/CIFS) server to which you are trying to connect and
encourage them to disable plain text passwords and start using encrypted
ones. If the server cannot be reconfigured to support encrypted passwords,
you can configure Mac OS X 10.4 SMB/CIFS client to send plain text
passwords.

Warning: If you configure your computer to allow connections to Samba or
Windows (SMB/CIFS) servers using plain text passwords, when you attempt to
make any connection to such a Samba or Windows (SMB/CIFS) server, your
password will be sent "in the clear". This means that it is possible for
someone who is monitoring your connection to see your password. This could
lead to someone compromising the Samba or Windows (SMB/CIFS) server. We
strongly recommend that you configure your Samba or Windows (SMB/CIFS)
servers to exclusively use encrypted passwords.

Follow the steps below to configure your computer to use plain text
passwords to make SMB/CIFS connections when the specified Samba or Windows
(SMB/CIFS) server does not support encrypted passwords. (You must be an
administrator to do these steps.)

   1. Make sure that you are not currently connected to any Samba or Windows
(SMB/CIFS) servers and that you do not have any Samba or Windows-related
error messages open.
   2. Open the Terminal (/Applications/Utilities/).
   3. At the prompt, type: sudo pico /etc/nsmb.conf
   4. Press Return.
   5. Enter your password when prompted, then press Return again.
   6. You should see an empty file and a "New File" notice at the bottom of
the pico window. If you do not see the "New File" notice, this file already
exists.
   7. Enter the following into the file so that it appears as follows:

[default]
minauth=none

   8. Save the file (press Control-O), press Return, then exit pico
(Control-X).
   9. Type: sudo chmod a+r /etc/nsmb.conf
  10. Press Return.
  11. Restart your computer.

software for heritage Macs

2005-04-20 Thread Frank Smith
My (adult) daughter has been given an old Mac with OS 7.5 and
Netscape 4. She has only 40Mb of RAM. Is there a cheap or free

and to do some reasonable Internet browsing?

She only has a slow dial up connection so needs something fairly
lightweight and as she is a Mac newby - easy to use.

Hi
I have changed from carbon copy cloner to using Apple's Disk Utility.
Since 10.3 the cloning ability is built in and called restore.
You can do it direct to the new hard disc (in an external case.)
If you can't mount both discs you can go through an intermediate stage
with an image file on another machine or disk.

I have been successful in swapping drives on our server with about 80
users. Keeps all settings and privs intact.

Seems to be a bit faster and more reliable than Carbon copy cloner

Re: Re-install OSX?

2003-04-29 Thread Frank Salleo
Did you try the startup disc control panel? I have fixed OSX 10.2.3
with the same symptoms after a classic crash. The systems were visible
in startup disc when started up from a 9.2 CD. Setting the OSX system
and restarting worked.

I needed to use a software app in Classic, so I restarted through the

Preferences. All was fine, used the app, then it stalled. Had to push
the

power button and turn off.

Upon restart the system could not find any operating systems (Flashing
question mark within folder icon). I went through System Manager and
the
like, troubleshooted via the Apple website, tried the lot. Repaired
disk and

verified everything using Disk Tools on the OSX CD. No luck.

Had to re-install OSX, then the subsequent upgrades to get back to .5.
I
have also had to re-install several updates, patches, etc, just to get
back

to normal.

Any ideas or something I should have tried that I have over-looked.

Re: OSX install woes

2003-04-16 Thread Frank Salleo

Bill
You are lucky it still starts up. Before you do any thing else. Start
up from system 9 and do the firmware update that is on the OSX disc.

I'll repeat that.
Before you do any thing else. Start up from system 9 and do the
firmware update that is on the OSX disc.

We have had two imacs that staff have upgraded without doing the
firmware update that will not boot up at all. The unis and repair shops
will tell you horror stories about new motherboards to fix this, or
swapping hard discs and motherboards with other imacs.

look at the apple web site and at the wamug archives for more info.
I could not get any of our imacs to startup after the first time they
booted into 10.2 the light comes on for about 10 secs and then goes
off. We tried pram resets, swapping hds and motherboards. Could not get
it to start.
This is poorly documented at apple. Just tells you to do the firmware
update before you install 10.2.
The 10.2 installation checks for the firmware updates on all macs
except for crt imacs. The readme on the discs tell you to do the
firmware update, but how many of us actually read this.

Re: DVD

If it is not a commercial DVD, it may have the wrong file permissions.
10.2.5 fixed this.
Or you can use the command line to copy the files to your HD, change
the permissions to read or read/ write and rewrite the a new DVD giving
it the same disc name. This has worked for me.

Sorry to use your direct email, BUT. I'm rather

UK and the Channel Islands for a iBook laptop (OSX,
640ram, 20gig) etc And although I have found BT

end, (Australia). Running out of time as the person
that will be using it is leaving for UK on Friday.

Is it possible to sign up and get everything working
from here? The person using the iBook is computer
illiterate, and will not be able to do it for them

I have been told by a friend that WAMUG has members
that travel in UK and use ISPs there.

You help would be greatly appreciated.

Fwd: DVD problem with data

2003-01-16 Thread Frank Salleo

HI all
Just to let you know the outcome.
DVDs written using discburner in 10.2.3 can't be read on windows.
As far as we can tell the format looks the same as DVDs written and
readable on the pc.
Writing the DVDs with toast 5.2 makes them windows readable.( and is
about 2X faster than apples discburner)

Thanks for the useful tips.

Thanks, Wamuggers, especially Rod, Shay and Mark Secker, for the

DVDs made on a Mac.

Re: Scanning tables to editable text

2002-04-10 Thread Frank Smith
Hi
Omni page is fairly successful at reading tables, producing figures
separated by tabs, which Word can turn back into tables. However it will
need some manual editing as Omnipage may mistake a cell border for a "1"

decimal points. Like most OCR it depends on the quality of the original

Stack space

2002-02-20 Thread Frank Smith
Hi all

Here's a problem that's got me beaten

When I try to debug a word basic macro in Word 6 I keep getting this
message:

Out of memory (stack space).

There's already 12Mb minimum 16Mb preferred RAM alocated to Word with
virtual memory off and increasing it further makes no difference. There's
no referenc eto stack space in any Apple or Word help files that I can
find.

The problem only arose when I upgraded from OS 8 to 8.6. My machine is a
Power Mac 7220/200.

Converting the macro to visual basic doesn't work because the way visual
basic handles tables is different so conversion would require a total
rewrite.

At present the only option I can suggest is running word 6 under OS 8.

Any ideas?

Good morning
Looks like we may have to change our ISP shortly. I'd appreciate
recommendations of user friendly, efficient and reasonably priced domain
hosters,

Regards,

Frank

Earlier iMac

2001-11-23 Thread Frank Smith
Hi all
Some months ago there were earlier (new) iMacs on the market for around
$1300. Does anyone know if there are any still around or is the move to
newer models worth the extra money?

Apple resellers are welcome to contact me off list,

Regards,
Frank

Wanted 8.1 to purchase

2001-11-20 Thread Frank Smith
Hi everyone

Does anyone have an OS 8.1 CDROM they would like to sell? My old 7220/200
came with OS 8.0 and an update on a zip disc which is no longer useable.
I'd like to reinstall 8.1.

Alternatively I'd look at purchasing OS 8.5. I think that's about as
advanced as the old lady can handle,

Regards,

Frank
