Re: Disappearing HD icon

2005-12-24 Thread Kevin Phyland
Hi every1,

Re my disappearing HD icon:

Rob Findlay helped me out:

It seems in my too-vigorous dusting I somehow managed to not only open
the Finder preferences panel but also to uncheck the "Show Hard Drives"
button...hehehhe...

Thanx Rob.

Important safety tip: Shut The Bloody Puter Down before wiping dust
from the Keyboard!!!

:)

Seasonal felicitations to all!

Disappearing HD icon

2005-12-23 Thread Kevin Phyland
Hi every1,

Somehow I seem to have done what I thought was impossible.

While rubbing a dry cloth across the keyboard to remove dust I seem to
have managed to get rid of the "Macintosh HD" icon and all access to it
(other than through the "Find" command)!

Anybody know (a) what strange key commands my wiping may have caused
and (more importantly) (b) how I can get it back?

Running a G4 iBook on 10.4.2

TIA

Hypercard & Tiger...

2005-08-31 Thread Kevin Phyland
Hi every1,

I realise this is a bit odd, but I still build little apps for my teaching
(random problem worksheets etc..) using the last version of Hypercard (2.4.1 I
think), and up until recently it worked quite well under Classic on my iBook
and using Panther.

But since upgrading to Tiger all scripts are now unmodifiable. Is this a
permissions thing or is it something more fundamental such as security?

Any help greatly appreciated as I am reluctant to chuck out ten years worth of
handy little programs...

Cheers,

Hi Greg et al.,

Thanx for the help to all. Yep, my toy thought it was still connected to the
Ethernet network at work!

As soon as I changed it to a LAN and configured the internal Airport modem
(which was there - thanks Steve) it worked like a charm!

:)

Dial-Up Using Airport?

2005-07-20 Thread Kevin Phyland
Hi every1,

This is probably old-hat but I'm a bit stuck trying to connect wirelessly using
a new (i.e. unconfigured) Airport Extreme to my dial-up ISP.

The Airport Extreme has a phone port to which I connected the phone line.

My iBook (G3 - 600 MHz - system 10.3.8) detects a strong signal from the
Airport when switched on but insists on telling me I am connected via Ethernet
which I clearly am not.

I cannot figure out how to configure the Airport so that it will dial-up my
ISP. The software that came with the Airport is a bit old (it keeps asking me
to download an update, which I am doing at the moment) but am I just missing
something very basic here?

I just want to be able to log onto the internet from my office without using
the current 50m of phone cable.

I have tried Airport Setup Assistant and Airport Admin Utility without success
- it tells me that it cannot detect anything connected to the Airport - and
since I haven't been able to dial-up yet it's probably right! :)

Cheers,

Kevin from wycheproof.

P.S. I assume the Airport Extreme contains a modem? Is the problem getting my
settings from the iBook's internal modem to the Airport's inbuilt modem?

Importing DV from Canon MV-630i

2003-09-29 Thread Kevin Phyland
Hi every1,

I just parted with $1200 for the Canon MV-630i DV camera and am now a tad
worried about whether I can import video onto my G3 iBook or not. Before I
parted with said money I was assured that the camera was Mac compatible but
iMovie only seems to allow connections via Firewire and my new toy only has USB
port connectors...

Is there a cable solution here, or do I need third-party software?

Re: Re: mp3 music downloads

2003-05-01 Thread Kevin Phyland
Hi every1,

Coupla thoughts...

* Record companies generally make more money than the artists themselves.

* If retail audio CDs cost only $15 instead of $30 hardly anybody would bother
downloading generally inferior "pirated" MP3 versions.

* Long before P2P existed people used to borrow your/my LP records and
routinely record them to cassette. It wasn't long ago that they borrowed
your/my CDs and copied them to cassette...

* Many artists (who DO in fact have record contracts) have encouraged the
download from registered sites of their material...David Bowie springs
immediately to mind.

Yes...in many circumstances downloading music from P2P programs will be
violating copyright laws, whether they are enforceable or just foreign
copyright laws is moot.

Pandora's box has been opened.

Cheers,
Kevin from Wycheproof.

File paths and X11

2003-03-28 Thread Kevin Phyland
Hi every1,

I've been playing around a bit with a program called MLDonkey (a p2p program
for OSX) which requires an X Windows program called X11 to run a different
GUI...

I've installed all the requisite programs but can't seem to get the file-path
correct for the folder in which the MLDonkey program resides.

Is it more complicated than just writing, say, Applications/MLDonkey
2.04/Mldonkey2.04/ ?

Secondly, is there an easy way to get Terminal file-paths?
I've downloaded a program called PathFinder but it hasn't helped so far...

A Coupla Jaguar questions...

2002-11-01 Thread Kevin Phyland
Hi every1,

I've just (in the last week) made the quantum leap from OS 9.2 to OS X.2
(Jaguar I believe).

Talk about a steep learning curve! :))

I have a couple of odd questions re it:

1. Stupidly, when I installed 10.2 I forgot that I had made a folder invisible
to prevent my little'uns accidently (or even deliberately) trashing it. Now I
can't find it!

Is there a way to make it visible other than going back to OS 9.x?

i.e. is there an OS X equivalent of ResEdit?

2. Minor quibble. My menubar clock says strange things like (atm) Fri 17.28.11
PM . It is not set to 24 hr time so the PM seems a bit redundant. Have I
done/missed something odd?

3. I downloaded an IRC client called AthenaIRC OS X which seemed to work fine
when I first installed it but now it is taking at least a second for me to type
a single bloody letter Is it somehow eating into my processor?

Thanx in advance,
Kevin Phyland
Wycheproof P-12 College.

P.S. Despite the above I absolutely love the look and feel of Jaguar. It's
cool!

Notebooks for teachers program...

2002-08-14 Thread Kevin Phyland
Hi every1,

Here in Victoria we've had the notebooks for teachers program for four years or
so. I availed myself of the iBook option (mine has DVD and CD-R capability - it
has a built-in CD burner as well)...and I've never looked back!

The PC option was originally an ACER machine. Boy, did they have problems with
that. The biggest problem in Victoria was giving EVERY teacher (whether
computer-savvy or not) a laptop. Most here let them sit on their desks with
obscure screensavers drivelling away all day, chewing up the odd kJ...

After three years of problems with the ACER machines (which local PC users
described as "pieces of crap") and so many returns for repairs they discarded
the ACER in favour of a more robust IBM machine.

My moral? The ACERs had lotsa trouble because they were not intuitively
user-friendly to new users (not necessarily because they were "pieces of crap"
- that's subjective). The Macs on the other hand had minimal returns for
repairs and were considered a good option.

Footnote: In Victoria if you originally punted on a PC machine for your laptop
you are NOT able to change to a Mac when the three years are up! Only those
clever (or fortunate) enough to have punted the Macs get to keep upgrading
them! :))

Talking Of Old Mac Games...

2002-08-13 Thread Kevin Phyland
Hi every1,

More than ten years ago I was enthralled and beguiled by an addictive (and
bloody time-consuming) puzzle game called "Fool's Errand". It was a work of art
by Cliff Johnstone which won many awards for best game etc... all those years
ago. He wrote two more games in a similar vein (called "3 In Three" and "At The
Carnival") which were unfortunately never released...

Well, for those as nostalgic as I am for those types of games, CJ has released
all three of his puzzle games for free download from his website:

http://fools-errand.com/

The classic "Fool's Errand" still runs quite nicely on my new iBook and the
other two stand up quite well (and I have to report are as addictive as the
"Errand"!)

Just thought I'd let people know... :))

Here's to many more wasted hours...

Cheers,

MP3 Music Servers

2002-07-25 Thread Kevin Phyland
Hi every1,

Most of the P2P clients I use have been mentioned:

iSwipe - clunky but ok if you have lots of free time
LimeWire - wouldn't touch it with a barge pole under OS 9 (and it can't find
anything remotely obscure)

however, if you have a version of MP3 Rage 2.6 or later it will search the old
Napster servers and comes up with some surprisingly good results! Just go to
the "Ragester" feature, click on "Get Server List", and choose a server. Ones
with more than 2,000,000 songs may take a few goes to log into but it's pretty
good once you start.

Be prepared to spend a little time logging in and have a track already in the
Search window...

Re: Audio input jacks

2002-06-26 Thread Kevin Phyland
Hi Shay et al.,

I too am keen to get some of my old vinyl put into some more permanent form
(i.e. CD via MP3) and was curious that my new iBook didn't seem to have any
audio input jack. Do I assume that third-party USB means some sort of USB --->
audio pin lead? Are these commercially available?

Re: RunTime Revolution

2002-06-26 Thread Kevin Phyland
Hi Frank et al.,

I found a version (admittedly fairly lobotomized) to play around with on a
recent MacFormat CD (January or February 2002 I think). Saved me a hefty
download as well... Fairly expensive little program just the same...still I
better save my pennies as it does exactly what I want to do with it...

Incidentally, I discovered why Hypercard was running so slowly on my
blazingly-fast iBook...I had Norton Anti-virus switched on and apparently it
treats every calculation that Hypercard does as something which needs to be
checked for a virus! Any wonder it was running slowly! It just blazes along now
with the virus checker turned off...

Hypercard! :))

2002-06-19 Thread Kevin Phyland
Hi every1,

A...how fondly I recall discovering Hypercard back in 1989...I used it to
write a great deal of software for our school (including our school report
proformas up until three years ago!)

Recently I decided to revisit the old beast (last "official" release...2.4 with
Color Tools I think) on my new iBook 750 with 384 MB RAM...

Well it still works but it's having a few worries...the following queries are
only for old fellas :))

1. It runs well (and is still bloody easy to write script for) but it seems to
run slower under 9.2 than it does on my old 6400 Performa running 8.6! It
sounds like it's always doing something in the background (as I can hear the
drive working constantly)... Is it just a case of an old trouper trying to keep
up with the bells and whistles of a new system or is it a memory problem for
the program?

2. Is there a more recent program that is as easy to write code for as
HyperCard or (even more unlikely) is there a program that will do what
HyperCard did/does that is cross-platform? I believe FileMaker may and a
program named Omnis Studio was mentioned. I mainly write mathematical drilling
software (i.e. automatic homework sheets etc..) so are either of the preceding
appropriate or is there a (fingers-crossed) better/newer software package that
is as intuitive and easy to use?

Thanx for your patience,
Kevin Phyland

Netscape 6 downloads...

2002-05-23 Thread Kevin Phyland
Hi every1,

Well I'm stumped! I've trawled the 'net, scoured the Netscape site and
sacrificed some virgin goats but I still can't find how to change the default
download folder in Netscape 6.2.1!!

It currently downloads into an invisible folder called "TheVolumeControlFolder"
which is clearly not desirable (God alone knows why the program chose this
folder as a default!)

While I'm au fait enough with ResEdit that I can retrieve any files downloaded
into this folder it is obviously not a satisfactory solution...

So...just how do you set the default download folder in Netscape 6.2??

Re: More DVD/MP3 Problems...

2002-02-08 Thread Kevin Phyland
Thanx Shay,

That was my interpretation...however...it begs the question as to why the
machine has a clearly labelled "MP3" as one of the playable formats on the
console/window, the box it came in and the manual!!

My suspicion is that the proliferation of MP3s has caused some companies to
flog MP3 capability as a selling point!

Is it worth my while kicking up a stink (i.e. posting the name/model/brand on a
number of mailing lists as it was definitely a selling point with me -
considering a friend has a different brand DVD player which he assures me DOES
play MP3s!!!) or chalking it down to experience, very much "Let the buyer
beware"?

I've already replied to NEC very saltily that I consider it false advertising...

Yours, in humility,
Kevin Phyland.

P.S. Quite grumpy though...

Hi every1,

After much mucking about with different burn formats I finally emailed the
maker of the DVD player, NEC and received the following rather cryptic reply.
If anyone can decipher it I'd really appreciate it...

Hello
The NDV-21 will not play back MP3's from a "burnt" disc. It will only play back
a "pressed" commercial disc.
Page 40 of the Instruction gives you the disc's that it will not play.

Hi,

Santa was kind enough to give me an NEC DVD player model NDV-21 for Christmas.
It says in both the manual and on the front of the machine that it is capable
of playing MP3s on CD.

I've tried a number of different formats (ISO 9660 etc..) and still haven't
been able to get anything but a "DISK ERROR" message with any of the formats
that I've tried.

I'd just like to know what I'm doing wrong with the format burning...
Can you help?

Cheers,

P.S. I've tried with less than 60 tracks, more than 60 tracks etc...frankly I'm
stumped. I've tried burning disks on Macs, IBM-compatibles etc...???

Different DVD/MP3 Problem...

2002-02-05 Thread Kevin Phyland
Hi every1,

Santa brought me a nice new NEC DVD player to go with my new TV/stereo :))

However, although the specs say that it can play MP3s on CD it doesn't
recognise any MP3 disks I put in it... :((

My questions:

1. Do MP3s have to be in any specific (i.e. I suspect non-Mac) format to play
on commercial equipment?

2. The manual says that it can list up to 60 tracks on the menu available on
the television equipment (so do I have to have <= 60 tracks?

3. Using ResEdit I can change the specs of any track into any desired format on
a Mac BUT do PC versions of MP3s use the same 4 character TYPE and CREATOR
codes and can they be changed (if necessary) by ResEdit?

Yours in $500 bewilderment,
Kevin Phyland

P.S. A mate has a similar DVD player (not identical but same make) who can
quite happily play at least 400 MB of Mp3s on his machine. Mind you, he burnt
them on an ACER...
I'd hate to think any ACER could do something my Powerbook can't:))

Different DVD/MP3 Problems...

2002-01-10 Thread Kevin Phyland
Hi every1,

Santa was kind enough to give me a brand new NEC DVD player to go along with my
new TV and stereo...which also was supposed to be able to play MP3s...

However...it doesn't recognise any of the CDs I've burnt using up-to-date Mac
machines...

My questions...

1. Is there any special format that MP3s have to be in to be identified by
"commercial" DVD/MP3 players (i.e. I suspect non-Mac formats) :((

2. The manual says that it can catalog up to 60 tracks on the video/TV
menudo I need to have <= 60 tracks on an MP3 CD?

3. ResEdit allows me to change any MP3 into (practically) any format that a Mac
can recognise. Do PCs use the same four character codes for TYPE and CREATOR
and can they be adjusted in the same way that Mac files can?

Yours in $500 confusion,
Kevin Phyland

P.S. I have a mate who has a similar DVD machine (same make different model)
who can play MP3 CDs up to about 400 MB...with an ACER laptop mind you...I'd
hate to think any ACER can do something my G3 Powerbook can't!! :))

P.P.S. I posted a very similar request through the yahoogroups address about
six hours ago...not sure if it's my fault for not registering or not...be cool
