For Sale: MacBook Pro (Mid 2009) and older Software
Hi all I have for sale the following: Computer 1: Caroline has a new computer (MacBook Air) so we are selling her 13 MacBook Pro. Has been used daily from new (September 2009) as her work computer and it has been very reliable. - It is in good condition with some marks on the bottom (underneath) and a slightly bent corner on the screen casing (does not affect the screen or use of the computer). - It has had a keyboard cover from new so keyboard is in as new condition, cover is included. - It has a decorative (girlie!) sticker on the outside, is still fitted and can be removed, should leave no marks. - Comes with brand new (still in original packaging) original power adaptor. - Comes with packaging and disks as new (only opened the software disk package to reformat to as new software). Offers up to $700 considered. Computer 2: Titanium PowerBook G4 550 with carry bag, OSX 10.0 disk, OS9 disk. Worked when last plugged in, haven't used it for a while. Hi I get this reasonably regularly using POP mail accounts and suspect it has to do with memory availability. I usually have 75 messages showing (in Mail Settings) but with many more messages available for downloading. Stopping the Mail App (and others, I have 16 Apps running now) helps. Go to settings mail, contacts, calendars touch your account name advanced deleted mailbox chose Deleted Messages then click the back buttons until you get to the screen that says ‘done’ so your settings are saved. If “trash on iPad” is checked, trashed mail stays on the iPad which essential means you keep seeing it in your emails. Hi I recently set-up new iMac. Did not use the Time Machine backup as I wanted to be Rosetta free (for some reason!) so used a new Account name. I did have access to the previous Account's Time Machine files through the mounted drive, as if it was a normal external drive. This worked great. I copied in my images and so on, all good. Then I did a Time Machine backup from the new Account to the same drive. This set the permissions so that I'm now locked out of the drive. :( That's a trap! I created an an account with the same details as the 'old' Account and could then access the files again and copy them to the new Account. Also the files are still available without requiring a different Account on my second backup, or should be until I do a backup onto that drive... Hi I've connected to a Dell 2408WFP screen (Has HDMI and Display Port inputs amongst others) using the DIGITAL AV ADAPTER and a HDMI cable, select the input and it just works... The colours are different, Dell is brighter even with the brightness at minimum setting and on the Dell the blues are stronger, the reds more orange and the greens brighter. As others have said the videos play on the remote screen. Display is always at 4:3 ratio so wide screens have black bars on each side. Rotating works as the iPad is rotated. In portrait the height is limited to screen height giving wider black bars on the sides. Movies playing on an external screen do not rotate. Even from portrait they play in landscape but the iPad still rotates. I too had an amplifier that was built not long after the ark, but it did have an optical input. So when I had the 'old' amp, I had an HDMI cable directly from the ATV to the Plasma set AND the optical connection from the ATV to the amp. This allowed me to listen in 5.1 audio and still have the video signal to the Plasma. you could of course also used the HDMI only and listened to the speakers in the Plasma set. HDMI carries audio and video together. So when I was listening to audio, I just turned the Plasma volume to zero, and it was all good. But my plan had always been to upgrade to an HDMI capable amp and I have just done that a few weeks back. A 3 zone Yamaha unit. So the HDMI cable from the ATV goes to the amp and thats it from the ATV and then another HDMI cable from AMP to Plasma to carry either ATV video signal or video signal from the Panasonic HD recorder - being the only other input to the amp I have. So basically, you can get away with audio and video direct to your flat screen with the HDMI cable but you wont get the benefit of a good audio system that way. Unless your amp has an optical input for the audio signal, you'll need to upgrade to a current spec amp with HDMI inputs. There is no RCA output from the ATV for audio signal. The ATV has been very good for me, cheap @ $129 and at that price really not a lot of vacillating in coming to the decision to get it. Stephen, you will not regret it, and the music and photo sharing that it enables brings a huge benefit of easy accessibility to your libraries - let alone podcast downloads and movies etc which is the main intended market penetration of this unit. Of course the set up of the ATV is just bulletproof basic. I was nervous as I am with most wireless devices and setting up with WPA codes, network details et al, usually having me trembling before the event!!! Hi Alex I'm on 3G with Telstra. My ISP and e-mail account are with TPG. Initially had no joy sending e-mail via the iPhone when on 3G. I used my e-mail account set-up in Mail to test the settings I needed based on what TPG said I would need, including alternate Ports. Found that my user name required the full e-mail (@tpg.com.au) to work with SSL turned on. When I got it working I then transferred the details to the iPhone and it worked. Using authentication also allowed my wife to send e-mail from her MacBook when connected to the internet at her work. Without the SSL/Authentication she could not send e-mail when connected to the internet at her work. The connection I make is that when connected at home via ADSL TPG knows that authentication is not required because of the physical link / direct connection to my ISP. When attempting to e-mail from another location on the internet (indirect connection to my ISP by IP address or 3G) the access is blocked by TPG in an attempt to stop unauthorised use of my e-mail account. So for me it was not a Telstra/3G issue in any way, shape or form. My ISP provided enough information by using my log-in details and information in their help pages to sort this out (server/host name, alternate port numbers). I loaded another account, which is POP3 and sent it via Telstra 3G (sidenote: one day left on prepaid credit,..arrgghh what to do,..lol) and bounced it via iinet with SMTP Authentication to their servers. All worked fine. I then set up another POP3 account and played around with the settings on 3G for different servers and got them all to send too. :) So not sure if that helps anything. :) lol The outgoing settings I have set up and turned on are:- • mail.iinet.net.au with Password authentication and SSL Off, Port 25 • mail.bigpond.com with no password authentication and SSL Off, Port 25 (but this is not active to use at all). The above are for the iPad on Telstra For Vodafone (which I also tested with a POP account) and bounced it via iinet through vf are pretty much the same. I have a few more set as backup SMTP servers incase one fails but 99% of the time, the first one works. ;) Hope that helps a bit. /shrug. (or is more confusing perhaps). She prints to an HP 8000 laser. The printer is an older A3 colour that duplexes and very valuable for her business - but it just won't talk properly to the Mac - or so it seems. She can set up what she wants on the screen i.e. a text box with a shadow around the outside of the text box, but when she prints the shading is on the inside of the text box and it does not print what is showing on the screen. She has used Macs for many years, but kept a PC going so she could get this feature to print properly. Now the PC has stopped and she is searching for a solution again to get the Mac to print shadow boxes. She knows someone else who has the same problem and they just stopped using shading on text boxes. Sally writes training packages and it's her preference to keep the appearance of shaded boxes. She feels it is a printer driver issue relating to the HP8000 and has tried running Parallels but finds it slows down her system dreadfully. She's spent hours searching the web for a fix, with no luck and is hoping someone has found a solution? Is upgrading Word likely to be a solution? Reg Have you actually tried the iPhone? I ask because of my experience travelling in Tasmania and South Australia in particular. On a number of occasions I've had to lend my iPhone (3G) because the person I was travelling with had no/not enough service (both on Telstra). Talking Firewire 800 400 I recenty picked up two Vantec NexStar MX dual bay drives with 2 x FW800, 1 x FW400 and 1 x USB. Having a 27 iMac with one FW800 port and wanting to connect by FW to an old PowerBook G4 with only FW400 I thought I may be needing a FW800-400 cable. Apparently not. Connected the iMac by FW800 to one of the drives, then the drive by FW400 (6-6pin) to the PowerBook. Boot into Target Disk mode and it shows up on the iMac :) The benefit of connections that support daisy chaining... Graeme My experience with iPhoto is that all the images appear in Photos AND Events. The difference being that Events groups the photos by time (the default on import?, Go to iPhoto - Preferences - Events to see the other options) Go to the events view and slowly drag across one of the images. You should see a slide show of the images in that Event. Double click to view the images in the Event. You should find all Events are groups of images taken on the same day. It is possible to turn the auto-splitting on import function off when importing from the finder (a check box in the Event Preferences) in which case you would see events as folder names that have been imported. Jewels Had an issue with connecting via Airport Express at my parent's place. Situations was a router with ethernet cable to the Airport. Turned out that the airport 'requires' the internet connection to be present, but it starts up more quickly than the router. Solution was to turn on the router first and after a delay turn on the airport. The actual delay will vary with the length of start up time for the router. I have tried resetting the airport on many occasions. The airport always shows green, so this is possibly not the fault. I thought perhaps my Belkin router is not the best to use. 13 Mac Book packaging only available - free
Hi all Have found ourselves with the packaging for a 13 Mac Book (White) that will be disposed of. Thought someone may be interested in it. Consists of the outer transit box, spacers to the inner retail box and retail box with inner tray and booklets. Possibly has a Leopard install disk (will have to confirm later) No MacBook, no power adaptors etc. Pick up only (East Vic Park, Forrestfield or CanningVale) Call me to arrange it. Telstra have a repair shop in Perth. We've just had one repaired - pick it up tomorrow but it has been waiting around for a week. The repair was a bit under $300. Anyone want to buy it? Peter I'm with Telstra and TPG (rather than People Telecom). Currently on iPhone 2.2.1 and about to go 3.0. Initially I had trouble sending e-mail while on 3G. What solved the problem for me was setting the primary outgoing mail server to the tpg server and changing 'Use SSL' to on, Authentication = password (and the appropriate user names passwords). I have mail.bigpond.com under 'Other SMTP Servers' without authentication. Now can send without issue from my wireless at home and while on 3G. Timing has not been an issue for me so have not noted any difference in delay when sending between one or the other. Having a look and the 'if primary unsuccessful will try others' message is there, but no options to change that setting. (so does OFF not really mean OFF?) I have set up an account with bigpond as the Primary and the same situation is seen in reverse ie: under WiFi if bigpond is toggled OFF an email is sent after a delay but not at all if bigpond is toggled ON. Having to manually configure the primary SMTP server's state whenever the network connection is changed is seemingly contradictory to what the Settings note about 'Other SMTP Servers' implies. I had hoped that the upgrade to iPhone 3.0 would resolve the problem but it hasn't. Nor has restoring everything 'as a new phone' (ie without any previous settings) made any difference. I have spent a fair bit of time talking to Telstra and Apple and, in fact it was only in the past few days that I worked out the above solution and was able to send emails using 3G connections although I'm sure there wasn't this difficulty when I first set up the phone's email. Lindsay I've got a Dell 2405 FPW (1920 x 1200 resolution) which has DVI-D, D- SUB (VGA), S-Video, Composite Component type inputs. No ADC though. Also has a card reader and 4 USB ports. I use a Pantone Huey to calibrate it and only found the limited brightness control to be a limitation. In the beginning I thought sun glasses would be necessary, or at least sunscreen! Calibrating (and time?) see me more than comfortable with the brightness now. Paid double what you're suggesting a couple of years ago. Have used it on both DVD and D-SUB with a G5 and a G4 (500MHz). ExtremeMac Micro Memo speaker volume on iPod Nano 2nd Gen
Does anyone have experience with these units, in particular the volume levels provided by the built in speaker? My family gave one to Dad for father's day (along with a Nano) and the volume from the speaker is only good enough if you hold it like a telephone to your ear. Not quite what we expected, especially as Dad has significant hearing loss. Have found a 'Crest' brand external speaker for ~$14 at BigW that does produce the volume required in a small package and not requiring extra power but the question about the volume remains... Severin I entered the market when these dropped below $1,000 (watched them for a year starting at $2,500!). Picked up a Pioneer DVR-520H-s with 80GB drive (DVR-720H-s same and has 160GB). Link to Pioneer's archive http://www.pioneer.com.au/ home_entertainment/archive.html (The DVR-510H-s on this page pre- dates the 520/720 and also has DV OUT). Reason for picking the 520/720 (other than price) was the DV OUT facility, it can be connected to the Mac and imports to iMovie via firewire. It acts as if it is a video camera (not an external hard disk). Important - it was the only model range readily available with DV OUT making importing into iMovie easy. Unfortunately it has been replaced by a model with DV IN and no DV OUT (DVR-530H / DVR-630H http://www.pioneer.com.au/ home_entertainment/dvdplayersandrecorders/index.html). I've kept an eye on the market and have not yet seen another model / range with DV OUT. Could not find 510/520/720 models on eBay. DVD HDD units typically record in MPEG2 format and create video format disks (either video or VR formats) for use in DVD players, not data format disks for importing into iMovie. Therefore you'll need to: - find another model with DV OUT or - rip the DVD's to your disk and convert to a format that iMovie can handle (DV, DV Widescreen, HDV1080i, HDV720p, MPEG-4, iSight) On the Superdrive formats, check System Profiler.app, and firmware updates. Cheers, Ronni Remember that once the movie clips are imported into iPhoto they become available in iMovie just like your photos. Bring them to the time line and your away editing them in iMovie.
