Re: New iPhone

2009-05-20 Thread Pontifex Family
I have been given a used 16gb 3G iPhone by my son who bought and used
it in Singapore where he lives. He retained the SIM card for use in
his new phone. I have never before looked at iPhone discussions as I
had no interest in buying one [still don't, I think they are too
expensive for my very moderate phone usage, but hey I got one for
free, may as well use it] so I am a complete newbie with this.

 So my first questions are:
1Can I insert the SIM card from another [non Apple] phone into this
iPhone to see if it works and if so will it be just recognised by the
telco as the other non Apple phone and operate as any normal phone.
 Boy, hope that makes sense.
2Can I just go to the telco I decide upon with my empty iPhone and
purchase a SIM card from them and my iPhone will just work.
3I have seen the terms jailbreak unlock etc referring to iPhones
but I glossed over them. I gather it means that my iPhone may/would be
locked onto a particular provider/telco. How do I ascertain if this
is so and if so how do I make it work with an Australian telco.

 See how newbie I am.

 Any advice appreciated.

1. As others have noted, the phone may be locked to the original carrier,
so you may have to get it unlocked (IMEI code).
2. To use it on a 3G network, you will need a 3G compatible SIM card -
there are no porkies in relation to this one, the release of the 3G iphone
was associated with plenty of complaints from persons who tried using
existing SIMS and could only connect to the 2G network, but of course
thought the iPhone, rather than the incompatible SIM, was the problem.
3. Note that the increasing use of 3G phones for data is leading to network
congestion on towers, leading to call drop outs - Optus with their cheaper
data plans, thus attracting more 3G users, have been particularly plagued
with this problem. Increased upgrade of more towers (which has occurred)
may have alleviated the complaints somewhat, although there is still a
steady stream at whirlpool.net.au. There seems to be have been less
complaints in Perth than elsewhere, possibly because of the relatively flat
terrain, meaning that a 3G phone can make effective use of more than one
tower to supply its data (an advantage over 2G technology, although all
towers support 2G, so there is a wider spread of towers). Your possibly
more hilly environment in Victoria may cause you some local 3G problems.

Re: Keep losing internet connection ??

2009-05-20 Thread Pontifex Family
 Hi again folks,

About 10 days ago we lost our landline.
I reported it to Westnet (my all in one provider).
It was restored about 2 days later.

Ever since then I lose internet connection every couple of days.
I do all the usual ... power off modem . . restart Mac etc !!!
A few minutes later I am back on.

Very frustrating coz I have changed nothing in my connection setup.
 I use a D-Link ADSL2+ Router.

This never happened prior to the landline problem.
 Any ideas ?

If the landline loss was associated with a power surge on your telephone
line, you may need to replace your ADSL filter/s. Although ADSL is
unfiltered, a damaged filter could mean that your phone service is now
interfering with your ADSL connection.
You may also need to contact your ISP:
1. to get your profile refreshed (e.g. since the outage you may now be
connecting/authenticating to a different server at the ISP)
2. get the telephone line checked in case the failure restoration of your
service is associated with a poorer quality line than you had before.

Re: iPhone problems !!

2009-05-20 Thread Pontifex Family
 Hi folks,

I am interested to know if anyone else has had iPhone problems ?

I got my iPhone 3G early January.
In early April I could not hear anything when receiving or making calls.
Took it to Telstra shop, they submitted for repairs and it was
 replaced with a new one.

2 weeks ago the new one started playing up.
Sometimes the touch screen simply did not respond.
Most of the time the screen went blank as I received a call or as I
 made a call.
Consequently I could not use hands free or even hang up after the call.
Each time I had to turn off the phone and restart.

Took it back to Telstra shop and they sent it in for repairs.
Got it back last Thursday and by Saturday it was doing the same again.
I will take it back once again tomorrow.

I am getting pretty fed up with it.
They tell me at the Telstra shop that this is very unusual.
Almost all the iPhones they get back have been dropped or damaged in
 some way.
Very rarely do they present wth faults.

Am I just very unlucky or do they fault more than I am being told ?

 Stephen Chape

Do you have a the iphone in a case with magnetisable components?

In the early days of the iphone there was a particular case that caused a
lot of problems.

Re: g5 iMac Sporadically closing down?

2008-08-12 Thread Pontifex Family
 Hi all,

Hoping someone out there might point me somewhere useful :-)

I have a 3 yr old 1.8 mhz g5 iMac (Just out of Applecare naturally.)

Over the last few weeks, the machine has been working fine except
that once every couple of days it makes a small pop and closes down

For about a minute, pressing the power button just makes it come on
 then off again.

Shortly thereafter, she powers up but (what sounds like) the fan
makes a lot of noise for about 30 seconds

CPU temperature is 75% - that sounds OK, yes?

Anyway, today the machine did it twice in the space of 15
minutes.starting to get a little nervous here... ;-)

Strangely though, I thought it might have something to do with the
power supply, so was wiggling that while it was dead and the machine
 turned itself on..

 I know...confusing eh?

Can anyone offer any advice beyond 'back up everything and brace your
 wallet'?

 cheers

The G5 iMacs have had problems with both failed power supplies and logic
boards, in many cases caused by poorly manufactured capacitors that were
used by the various assembly factories at that time (ie many brands
affected, not just Apple products). The rate of deterioration of the
capacitors seems heat related, so if your imac had not been used much, or
always in a cool environment, it may have taken longer for the problem to
reveal itself.

Of course excessive heat itself will cause a damage prevention shutdown.
Is the interior of the computer choked with dust fibres, so that no
effective air cooling is taking place?

Re: Sound is on the blink

2008-07-21 Thread Pontifex Family
My sound system has gone haywire. I can get a sound output from my
saved files in iTunes, but when I download video files from various
sources I get sight but no sound.

 I'm using a 20 iMac with 10.4.11.

If you have installed Perian (which supplies codecs for audiovisual files),
you may wish to update it. I think some of its codecs are no longer
compatible with the latest Quicktime update. Note in the Perian readme, it
suggests deleting certain other codecs to minimise conflicts with the Perian
supplied codecs.

Downloading this update seems to have killed my powerbook. Any ideas?

...and I lost the ability to log in with the delta 10.3.7 update via
Software Update from 10.3.6 (YASU - which clears caches/repairs
permissions/prebinds applications - had been run recently, although not
immediately before update). Followed steps in Apple KB Article 106464 (Your
Mac won't start up in Mac OS X) and ran Disk Warrior 3.02 over drive, but no
joy (running fsck in single user mode only identified one orphaned node and
repairing it still did not fix log in problem), so did 'archive install'
and was able to log in under 10.3.0, so ran Software Update again. This
time the combo 10.3.7 Update came down, along with 4 other updates BUT then
again lost the ability to log in (and lots of sleep...and the playlist for
the Xmas work function..) ... So another archive and install tonight, but
this time just used saved packages (from Previous system folder) and a
independently downloaded combo 10.3.7 package (thanks Jock - this dmg had
successfully updated a number of different Macs) to get a working OS (ie
only used Software Update to determine what I needed to install).

Why the problem...perhaps there were some corrupted update packages coming
off the Software Update servers yesterday or corrupted ones in particular
ISP caches?? Anyway time to enjoy some sleep.

Safari/10.3.6/DNS Addresses

2004-11-10 Thread Pontifex Family
In relation to Safari issues that Macfixit.com and some WAMUG members are
reporting, I suspect that this is a DNS issue that is mostly resolved by
adding the IP addresses of some DNS servers, not just that of the users ISP,
to the DNS Servers section, in the TCP/IP section of the Network System
Preferences (or TCP/IP control panel in OS 8/9 parlance).

I certainly haven't experienced this problem in recent years, but then I
have always specified the IP addresses of some DNS servers in whatever
TCP/IP software I have been using (usually that of my ISP, e.g. iinet
203.0.178.191 and Telstra for WA these are currently 61.9.240.14 and
61.9.224.14). Inability to connect to a particular DNS server in a timely
fashion is a network issue, that is aggravated by network congestion due to
spam, virus generated traffic and file download activity (e.g. bit torrent
clients). This recommendation is a solution to a problem of the internet
that has affected all types of operating systems, over at least 10 years,
as growth/spikes in use saturates capacity of a particular ISP at a
particular point in time. Doubters should search www.whirlpool.net.au for
evidence.

Telstra, the predominant broadband carrier, in addition to unexpected faults
in its network, has frequent scheduled outages at exchanges all over
Australia, that will intermittently prevent certain areas connecting to the
internet (http://telstra.com/servicestatus/wholesale/default.asp). For
those on ADSL, reverting to a dialup connection during an outage will often
help access this page for details, as most scheduled outages seem to be for
ADSL upgrades. iiNet had problems this last weekend affecting all types of
connections, due to upgrade of a major optical fibre link to their
operations centre (ie it wasn't Safari or the coincident OSX 10.3.6 update
causing the connection problem for iinet customers).

ANZ Internet Banking Safari

2004-02-09 Thread Pontifex Family
I have no problems with Safari 1.2 (and the related Java 1.4.2 update) and
using the ANZ and National Bank internet banking services (including funds
transfer). Safari 1.2 fixed my remaining outstanding problem with Safari
and internet banking with these two banks, that being the inability of MS
Excel (OSX version, currently 10.1.5) to directly open the downloaded
transaction history csv type files. Prior to Safari v 1.2, I needed to
use an intermediate application to convert the file to a text type file,
that could then be opened with MS Excel. If downloaded with Internet
Explorer, the csv files have always been able to be directly opened by MS
Excel.

One additional note on using MS Excel to initially identify the downloaded
csv file type is that double-clicking on the file in Mac OS 10.3.2 gave an
unrecognised file type and a prompt to select an application. However the
dialogue box for the Open With command had a setting of Recommended
Applications, which did not include MS Excel. I had to change the dialogue
box to a setting of All Applications to be able to select MS Excel.

In my use of Safari, I have Block Popup Windows activated and the Debug
menu for User Agent set to Automatic (I activated the debug menu in the
original version of Safari and it has remained active through the upgrades.

Try emptying Safari's cache (under Safari menu) first and then deleting any
cookies (under Safari menu - Prefrences/Security) to assist with further
troubleshooting (not that I can see any ANZ cookies in my list).

IiNet's new Bliink contract

2002-06-19 Thread Pontifex Family
As many replies have noted, iinet does have many ADSL customers using Mac's
(including this family on an ADSL freedom plan - which provides a fixed IP
address) and set up was very easy, despite the lack of tech support. The
main problem with this contract (now not available) was that for most family
members, it was effectively a 1 GB at $79.95 per month plan rather than the
advertised 3 GB/month, because 2 GB were only available between 12 midnight
and 7 am seven days per week. In relation to mac support, note this comment
in the most recent version of their service contract:

8.4.8 iiNet supplied modems are not supported under the following
circumstances:

(i) You running internal modem software other than that provided with the
modem; (ii) You running internal networks on our internal modem software;
or (iii) Macintosh Operating systems below 10.0.

Maybe this clause is why some tech's think mac's are unsupported. The new
Bliink contract has connection speed penalties rather than financial
penalties for exceeding the contracted volume each month. Its main
attraction is that the contracted volume is available at any time (no peak
period concept).
Unlike other responders, I haven't noticed any conditions in their online
advertising or contracts saying that downloads between midnight and 7 am do
not count towards the contracted monthly volume. The following conditions
might impact upon users thinking of setting up a home-based web server (port
80 blocked):

8.4.23 The download speed of Bliink and Biz-Bliink Plus are subject to
shaping. Shaping means the download speed from the Internet will be slowed
after the specified Traffic shaping level has been reached in a calendar
month. The download speed will be slowed to speeds similar to 64kbps for
Biz-Bliink Accounts, and 56kbps for Bliink Accounts.

8.4.24 The instigation of shaping will cause You to lose Your Internet
connectivity, and You will need to reboot Your modem and computer.

8.4.25 Bliink Home Accounts are dynamic IP Accounts. A new IP will be
assigned whenever the computer and modem is rebooted. The IP remains until
the next time the computer and modem is switched off. IP¹s can only be
reallocated on new connections and iiNet is not liable for any data
intrusions while You maintain an active session. iiNet recommends You
routinely reboot Your modem and computer.

8.4.26 The Bliink home accounts are not suitable for hosting externally
accessible servers and the following ports are blocked for incoming
connections: Port 80 (WWW), Port 25 (SMTP), Port 139 (NetBEUI and IPX/SPX),
Port 443 (HTTPS) and Port 0. Other ports may be blocked without notice if
this is deemed necessary for security or network management reasons.

For those looking to save money, note that iiNet's hardware prices for
modems (eg Dlink 300), combined modem/routers (Dlink 504) or filters needed
on each wall outlet for use with other telephone equipment have a
significant premium (40 - 80%), compared to that from other computer
peripheral retailers. I would recommend a dedicated router (such as a
combined modem/router - to reduce clutter - or Airport attached to modem)
for sharing the internet connection over a software router. If like me, you
have a need to boot between OS 9 and OS X on a frequent basis, you won't be
disrupting the connection to other users.

Richard.
