Re: iPhone 3G S - Telstra Plans

2009-07-03 Thread Tobes

Hey Ronda - my experiences as Telstra mobile user, coupled with
discussions I've had with Optus and Virgin users and my own research
leads me to believe the following:

1. You pay at about 25% more to be a Telstra mobile user (vs Optus).

2. Telstra on the whole have a superior network, including coverage
and tech support. However, Optus has a much better deal - personally,
I'm looking at Virgin, which seems to offer better data plans than
Optus.

My conclusion:

If I was using my phone for business, and it had to be up and running
99% of the time, I'd pay the premium for access to the Telstra
Network. If I wasn't using my phone for business, and the risk of
losing money from call dropouts wasn't an issue, I'd definitely go
with Optus or Virgin.

Cheers,
T.

P.S. For the record, my earlier email to the list about Telstra vs
Optus networks got positive and negative experiences from both sides -
my conclusion is based on a subjective averaging of the stories. Also,
by 'better deal', I'm referring to plans which include paying off the
phone over 24 months. Haven't looked into paying the phone off upfront.

P.P.S. Apparently Telstra have extensive 'doesn't go towards your
download quota' wireless coverage in cities such as Sydney, so the
terrible data plans Telstra offer don't affect users as much there.
'May be why we look at the Telstra plans and shake our (collective)
head with disbelief.

Hello WAMUGers,

Today I received a phone call from a Telstra representative (my
current contract expires with them on 30th July '09). We got talking
the new iPhone 3G S and he was continually pressing the point that
Telstra is Australia's largest, fastest and most reliable 3G
network. He then sent me an email with Telstra's new iPhone Plans.
I'm interested in your opinions on these plans in comparison to
other carriers please.

Telstra's monthly included data download is terrible I think, $5 for
the $30 $40 plans which equates to 5MB of Data ... excess data
charged at $1.00/MB ... yikes!

And then there is this in Telstra's -Things you need to know:
	1. iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G are configured to work only with the
wireless services provided by Telstra.

Does this mean you cannot access any other wireless network?

http://www.telstra.com.au/mobile/phones/iphone/pricing.html

Optus still seems to have the better plans. I have stayed with
Telstra all these years for its better coverage, but I'm seriously
contemplating a change of carrier for an iPhone 3G S.
Telsyte principal research analyst Warren Chaisatien says Optus has
again released the most aggressive iPhone plan prices, increasing
data allowances for the internet-savvy phone and introducing plans
with unlimited phone calls and messaging.

Optus iPhone 3GS plans include the company's popular $59 plan with
data boosted from 500MB to 700MB a month and so-called timeless
plans with unlimited calls and messaging starting at $99 and
including 1.5GB of downloads.

And Telstra is the only carrier not to offer iPhone tethering,
allowing use of the iPhone as a modem.

http://www.news.com.au/technology/story/0,28348,25717048-5016091,00.html

How I'm interpreting the information Optus 'whops' all over
Telstra ... or am I misinterpreting the information?

Of course 3 Mobile have not yet released plans for the iPhone 3G S.
Expected in the coming weeks. Which might not give me enough time as
I only have to 30th July to decide if I extend my contract with
Telstra for another 12 months :-(

Ronni

Re: Macbooks and games

2009-01-21 Thread Tobes

My Old Dual 1.8 G5 with an ATI X800 Graphics card performed better
with WoW than my Current 2.4 Dual core iMac with all the settings
ramped up. And that's with the iMac Running Windows Vista SP2.

The biggest bottleneck seemed to be the slower system bus (900mhz
versus 600Mhz), followed by the graphics card. Technically, the iMac's
2600 is supposed to be comparable to the aged X800. The truth is the
X800 handles the anti-aliasing a lot better.

Now, if I'd left my iMac purchase a few months and waited for the iMac
with the grunty Nvidia card ... ah well. : )

iMac wireless not working (kinda)

2008-10-16 Thread Tobes

Hi guys, I have a 24 iMac (just prior to current Gen), an iBook (just
prior to current gen) and a WEP enabled wireless network running over
an iinet/belkin ADSL2 modem.

The iBook connects to the network using a WEP key.

The iMac (when Booted under Vista) connects to the network via the WEP
key.

The iMac (when running 10.5.5) keeps getting a 'connection failed'
message.

Any advice gratefully appreciated. I'm recovering from spinal surgery
at home, and have the iMac set up on a wheelie table in the bedroom.

I've got an ethernet cable running to the modem at the moment, but
it's just a matter of time before I (or someone else) trips over it.

Cheers,
T.

P.S. Quick google search didn't net anything, but I'm not sure if my
keywords were appropriate.

I went cold turkey about 3 months ago. Although I can't help, I feel
your pain. I used to research (in-depth) methods of improving WoW
performance. My previous computer, a Dual 1.8 G5 tower, had an ATI
X800 in it. When I traded it in for a brand new iMac a few months ago,
I noticed a slight drop in fps ... luckily, that was the same time as
I stopped playing*. : )

slightly off topic; one of the great things (for me) about getting an
'all-in-one' computer like an iMac... I've stopped investing so much
time and money in better graphics cards.

My experience with virus software is that they are massive CPU hogs.
That was back in the OS 9 days though, so I figure they've improved a
lot since then (?)

Cheers,
Toby.

*The two are not related. WoW is the most addictive game I've ever
played ...

After following some of their advice, then somewhat riskingly ignoring

keychain had been renamed.

I renamed the keychain back to 'login.keychain', The tech support guy
and I had a laugh, and all appears to be well.

So the lesson here is to back up any important data. There didn't seem
to be any option as to different methods of upgrading, so back up the
things you need.

And to quote Mr. Adams - 'Don't Panic.'

Severin, if your Sony DV has firewire you can use that in place of a

BankWest online banking - are they nuts.

2006-03-29 Thread Tobes

How crap must Safari be as a browser, that BankWest no longer support
it with their online banking system (see below).

I especially like the line, Accordingly, the Bank supports only the
major browsers and operating systems in general usage.

I go to log in this morning, and I'm treated to a new interface for
the BankWest website - with the online banking bit not working with
Safari.

I let them know, and I get a reply that Safari is no longer supported
by the site (see message below). I try and click on the support link
provided ... and get told the page doesn't exist.

I try to load the bankwest homepage again, and the old site loads,
complete with working online banking interface.

What the hell BankWest?

Tobes.

P.S. I'm sending a copy of this message to BankWest (in case you're
wondering).

No longer nuts, just poorly organised ... Re: BankWest online banking - are they nuts.

2006-03-29 Thread Tobes

Just to clarify -

1. I was using a G5 running OS 10.4.5 and Safari 2.0.3

2. The site I saw this morning (which wouldn't let me visit/load the
online banking component) was new. It comprised of some new graphics,
3 or so drop down menus with an icon/button next to each. The online
banking button had an orange box with a white circle inside it. The
button didn't execute.

When I visited the site this arvo, it had changed back to the old
site I know and use, complete with functional navigation to the
online banking component.

3. This morning, after having no luck with the -new but it seems
fleeting- BankWest site, I loaded VPC and visited the site with IE 6
for Windows. The 'new' site loaded and functioned perfectly.

... okay, I've just had a look at the new BankWest 'look' via the
link on their website. It appears to be what I saw this morning.
BankWest must have had it configured to load temporarily instead of
the usual site. I know I didn't type in a strange link, because I
accessed the site via a bookmark, not by manually typing in the address.

I guess Di from BankWest wasn't aware someone had made the switch
(hence the generic 'we don't support you' e-mail response). Hurm.
Shouldn't be my job to tell them *sigh*.

Apologies all for my confusion and slight frustration.

Re: Hello Tiger

2005-05-01 Thread Tobes

I'll go on record to say thanks Daniel, for pointing out the trick
with getting the Dashboard Weather tracker to 'see' Perth correctly
(i.e. politely ask it to search again :-)

Also, I've found that I'm using the icomic interface ( http://
www.ruxp.net/ ) for reading various online comic strips ...
archives. It has a neat visual interface which shows which days of
the month strips were published - makes it easy to go back and view
past strips.

Seems like it's just Dilbert and Penny-Arcade at the moment, but I
imagine it'll grow. I'm curious about what effect it might have on
those sites advertising revenue (if the process takes off).

Other than that, Tiger seems (dare I say it) 'snappy' ... no serious
bugs that I've picked up. Archive and Install lost the Wacom and ATI
system prefs though - was easy to re-install.

transmit their GPRS data to the flightracker website. You should
check out

which is the release point for a lot of Australian content and
Australian widget developers. There is one guy on there, islayer,
who is developing an Australian tv guide widget that has Eyetv

Re: Installing Tiger on new HD, then moving old HD data across

2005-04-30 Thread Tobes

Heh heh - this was written from Tiger with an Archive install done -
thanks anyway Daniel. :)

Couple of things to note about the installation - a few user centric
system preference panes haven't made it through the process.
Specifically, Logitech mouse, Wacom graphics tablet and ATI display

Everything else feels very soild, and pretty quick. :)

Tobes

Hi all, I'm planning on upgrading my G5's Hard Disk at the same

installing Tiger. I figured the best way to do this is install the

migrate my user data from the old HD to the new one.

Can anyone confirm that it is possible to use the SU in the method
I've

described? My previous experience was in moving user data via a
firewire cable between a G5 and a G4. I'm unsure whether it can be
used

between two internal HDs.

A few google searches haven't revealed anything, any info
appreciated.

Hi Toby

Just so you know,..one of the options when installing Tiger is
Transfer my
information from another partition on this Mac. It then goes
through and
finds the old folder on another (a) partition and by the look of it
(b) a

drive, so with Tiger you may be able to do what you wanted. :o)

Just thought I'd let you know.

Enjoy!

Kind Regards
Daniel

He's got a second monitor (both are analogue XVGA HD15 types).

What are the options for a cheap dual head?

All comments welcomed.

Analogue Audio in port for G5

2005-01-25 Thread Tobes

The socket doesn't seem to fit an Apple plaintalk microphone
(semi-transparent case, think it came with a G4 originally) ... is this
kind of mic just too old, or is there some special connector I was
supposed to know about?

Any advice gratefully appreciated,
Tobes.

Re: ipod reliability (was: 30 monitor laugh)

2004-06-17 Thread Tobes

Well, having just bought a 20 gig ipod, I'm going to be annoyed if
anything goes wrong in the next 3-6months. The ipod's been out about 2
years yeah? 'figure that's enough time to work out a few manufacturing
errors.

I think MS offer a one year warranty on the Xbox ... Apple offer the
same on the 'pod. Seems crap but consistent. Anyone know what the
warranties are like on similar music players (e.g. Creative's 'Zen')

T.

P.S. My first mac was a 7200/90, my second a 7300/180, then I jumped to
a G4 400 (sawtooth). I keep in touch with the owners of the pre-G boxes
- they're still running. :)

Would you expect the history of problems to decrease as time passes?
History, by its very nature will get larger...

Arrggh...

I'm just going to assume you know what I meant ;-)

Or perhaps people would just forget about the 7220, the 1710, the
8600 power supplies in Australia, or any of the other issues from the
past?

We had a perfectly good 7220 and a perfectly good 8600 here. We only
retired them early last year. The 8600's power supply did die, but
given

how old it was that was more than reasonable. I wasn't even aware there
was a known fault with those models.

Thinking that there are more problems recently is probably more
likely a result of 'now-centredness'

Or the fact that I was out of the 'mac world' for quite a while,
something I tend to forget as I used the very old macs (Plus, SE/30,
LCIII) and use the new ones now.

Re: Titanium Toast

I think you can get a free upgrade from version 5.1.4 to 5.2.1, which
works under 10.3.2 (assuming 10.3.3 is a typo :)

I *think* I had the same problem.

I tried trashing prefs, reinstalling etc.
The closest I could get it back to working was it asking for a serial
number which it refused to accept anyway.
Oddest was that the same app would work fine under OS9 (not classic
though).

I eventually got sick of this, the finder wads burning disks ok
though, and 'looked' for a new version.

Toast 6 did the trick with the most minimal interface yet.

Not the result I set out for, but 'A' result.
