Re: iPhone 3G S - Telstra Plans
Hey Ronda - my experiences as Telstra mobile user, coupled with discussions I've had with Optus and Virgin users and my own research leads me to believe the following: 1. You pay at about 25% more to be a Telstra mobile user (vs Optus). 2. Telstra on the whole have a superior network, including coverage and tech support. However, Optus has a much better deal - personally, I'm looking at Virgin, which seems to offer better data plans than Optus. My conclusion: If I was using my phone for business, and it had to be up and running 99% of the time, I'd pay the premium for access to the Telstra Network. If I wasn't using my phone for business, and the risk of losing money from call dropouts wasn't an issue, I'd definitely go with Optus or Virgin. Cheers, T. P.S. For the record, my earlier email to the list about Telstra vs Optus networks got positive and negative experiences from both sides - my conclusion is based on a subjective averaging of the stories. Also, by 'better deal', I'm referring to plans which include paying off the phone over 24 months. Haven't looked into paying the phone off upfront. P.P.S. Apparently Telstra have extensive 'doesn't go towards your download quota' wireless coverage in cities such as Sydney, so the terrible data plans Telstra offer don't affect users as much there. 'May be why we look at the Telstra plans and shake our (collective) head with disbelief. On 03/07/2009, at 12:45 PM, Ronda Brown wrote: Hello WAMUGers, Today I received a phone call from a Telstra representative (my current contract expires with them on 30th July '09). We got talking the new iPhone 3G S and he was continually pressing the point that Telstra is Australia's largest, fastest and most reliable 3G network. He then sent me an email with Telstra's new iPhone Plans. I'm interested in your opinions on these plans in comparison to other carriers please. Telstra's monthly included data download is terrible I think, $5 for the $30 $40 plans which equates to 5MB of Data ... excess data charged at $1.00/MB ... yikes! And then there is this in Telstra's -Things you need to know: 1. iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G are configured to work only with the wireless services provided by Telstra. Does this mean you cannot access any other wireless network? http://www.telstra.com.au/mobile/phones/iphone/pricing.html Optus still seems to have the better plans. I have stayed with Telstra all these years for its better coverage, but I'm seriously contemplating a change of carrier for an iPhone 3G S. Telsyte principal research analyst Warren Chaisatien says Optus has again released the most aggressive iPhone plan prices, increasing data allowances for the internet-savvy phone and introducing plans with unlimited phone calls and messaging. Optus iPhone 3GS plans include the company's popular $59 plan with data boosted from 500MB to 700MB a month and so-called timeless plans with unlimited calls and messaging starting at $99 and including 1.5GB of downloads. And Telstra is the only carrier not to offer iPhone tethering, allowing use of the iPhone as a modem. http://www.news.com.au/technology/story/0,28348,25717048-5016091,00.html How I'm interpreting the information Optus 'whops' all over Telstra ... or am I misinterpreting the information? Of course 3 Mobile have not yet released plans for the iPhone 3G S. Expected in the coming weeks. Which might not give me enough time as I only have to 30th July to decide if I extend my contract with Telstra for another 12 months :-( Cheers, Ronni 17 MacBook Pro Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz / 4GB / 800MHz / 500GB OS X 10.5.7 -- The WA Macintosh User Group Mailing List -- Archives - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/archives.shtml Guidelines - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtml Unsubscribe - mailto:wamug-unsubscr...@wamug.org.au -- The WA Macintosh User Group Mailing List -- Archives - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/archives.shtml Guidelines - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtml Unsubscribe - mailto:wamug-unsubscr...@wamug.org.au

Re: Macbooks and games
My Old Dual 1.8 G5 with an ATI X800 Graphics card performed better with WoW than my Current 2.4 Dual core iMac with all the settings ramped up. And that's with the iMac Running Windows Vista SP2. The biggest bottleneck seemed to be the slower system bus (900mhz versus 600Mhz), followed by the graphics card. Technically, the iMac's 2600 is supposed to be comparable to the aged X800. The truth is the X800 handles the anti-aliasing a lot better. Now, if I'd left my iMac purchase a few months and waited for the iMac with the grunty Nvidia card ... ah well. : ) Cheers, T. iMac wireless not working (kinda)
Hi guys, I have a 24 iMac (just prior to current Gen), an iBook (just prior to current gen) and a WEP enabled wireless network running over an iinet/belkin ADSL2 modem. The iBook connects to the network using a WEP key. The iMac (when Booted under Vista) connects to the network via the WEP key. The iMac (when running 10.5.5) keeps getting a 'connection failed' message. Any advice gratefully appreciated. I'm recovering from spinal surgery at home, and have the iMac set up on a wheelie table in the bedroom. I've got an ethernet cable running to the modem at the moment, but it's just a matter of time before I (or someone else) trips over it. Cheers, T. P.S. Re: World of Warcraft
I went cold turkey about 3 months ago. Although I can't help, I feel your pain. I used to research (in-depth) methods of improving WoW performance. My previous computer, a Dual 1.8 G5 tower, had an ATI X800 in it. When I traded it in for a brand new iMac a few months ago, I noticed a slight drop in fps ... luckily, that was the same time as I stopped playing*. : ) slightly off topic; one of the great things (for me) about getting an 'all-in-one' computer like an iMac... I've stopped investing so much time and money in better graphics cards. My experience with virus software is that they are massive CPU hogs. Specs are as follows:- Input 100 - 240 volt 1.5A 50-60Hz 75W Output 19.0 volt 3.2A It has a single plug (for the laptop end) that looks virtually the same as a motorola charger plug. Does anyone have one of these that they do not want any more ? I am reluctant to pay $69 for a new one when the laptop was a freeby and might not work anyway. I am prepared to pay $20 for a second hand one. BankWest online banking - are they nuts.
How crap must Safari be as a browser, that BankWest no longer support it with their online banking system (see below). I especially like the line, Accordingly, the Bank supports only the major browsers and operating systems in general usage. I go to log in this morning, and I'm treated to a new interface for the BankWest website - with the online banking bit not working with Safari. I let them know, and I get a reply that Safari is no longer supported by the site (see message below). I try and click on the support link provided ... and get told the page doesn't exist. I try to load the bankwest homepage again, and the old site loads, complete with working online banking interface. What the hell BankWest? Tobes. P.S. I'm sending a copy of this message to BankWest (in case you're wondering). On 29/03/2006, at 2:08 PM, BankWest Online wrote: Dear Mr Oldham Thank you for your enquiry. No longer nuts, just poorly organised ... Re: BankWest online banking - are they nuts.
Just to clarify - 1. I was using a G5 running OS 10.4.5 and Safari 2.0.3 2. The site I saw this morning (which wouldn't let me visit/load the online banking component) was new. It comprised of some new graphics, 3 or so drop down menus with an icon/button next to each. The online banking button had an orange box with a white circle inside it. The button didn't execute. When I visited the site this arvo, it had changed back to the old site I know and use, complete with functional navigation to the online banking component. 3. This morning, after having no luck with the -new but it seems fleeting- BankWest site, I loaded VPC and visited the site with IE 6 for Windows. The 'new' site loaded and functioned perfectly. ... okay, I've just had a look at the new BankWest 'look' via the link on their website. It appears to be what I saw this morning. BankWest must have had it configured to load temporarily instead of the usual site. I know I didn't type in a strange link, because I accessed the site via a bookmark, not by manually typing in the address. I guess Di from BankWest wasn't aware someone had made the switch (hence the generic 'we don't support you' e-mail response). Hurm. Shouldn't be my job to tell them *sigh*. Apologies all for my confusion and slight frustration. T. Re: Hello Tiger
I'll go on record to say thanks Daniel, for pointing out the trick with getting the Dashboard Weather tracker to 'see' Perth correctly (i.e. politely ask it to search again :-) Also, I've found that I'm using the icomic interface ( http:// www.ruxp.net/ ) for reading various online comic strips ... archives. It has a neat visual interface which shows which days of the month strips were published - makes it easy to go back and view past strips. Seems like it's just Dilbert and Penny-Arcade at the moment, but I imagine it'll grow. I'm curious about what effect it might have on those sites advertising revenue (if the process takes off). Other than that, Tiger seems (dare I say it) 'snappy' ... no serious bugs that I've picked up. Archive and Install lost the Wacom and ATI system prefs though - was easy to re-install. T.
