Re: 10.5.7 Update: what experiences?

2009-05-22 Thread David Moyle
Hey

None at this stage I'm aware of.

WWDC at this stage will be iPhone 3(OS), not hardware.
Snow Leopard
Hopefully some new iMacs, only minor upgrades though. The form-factor is
getting old now (2004/5) but not sure what they would change.

Laptops doubt it..
Tablets are still being rumored, not holding breath though..

Cheers

Is there any suggestion of new/updated computers with the release of

Perhaps the singing will improve with Snow Leopard... :-)

I've tracked down the source of my iMic problem at least. It tuned out
to be the Hear audio plugin. This is something which is apparently
installed with Skype, and has been causing problems for quite a while,
since at least 10.5.3 according to http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7416555
. I have removed it and now Wiretap Studio seems to be working fine.
At least it doesn't quit when I hit the Record button any more.
Amadeus II also seems to be behaving itself now as well. Don't really
care about the rest since I never use them. I'm very relieved since I
was reduced to using Final Vinyl, a piece of software which is almost
completely unusable for recording from vinyl records because of the
ever increasing volume of the background hiss while it's recording.

Now perhaps Skype will work better as well. That was another casualty
of the 10.5.7 upgrade on my system.

Re: 10.5.7 Update: what experiences?

2009-05-18 Thread Ronda Brown

Hello Michael & WAMUGers,

I'm having a problem with my email & I'm not receiving any WAMUG
messages so I have pasted Michael's email so I can reply.

Michael are you using Airport to connect?
If you are:
Look at the settings in your active network environment. If there is
only 'Airport', Add 'Ethernet'.
System Preferences > Network - in the left column you should have
Airport Connected (if you are connecting this way) & under that you
should have at least Built-in Ethernet (Not connected)

You only have to 'activate' Ethernet, not connect it (if you are using
Airport).

There is a difference between activation and connection. If the
Ethernet icons are brightly coloured, they are "active" and you should
have no problem. It is not "connected" until a cable is plugged in.
Active means it is ready to be connected. If it was not "active" then
nothing would happen when a cable was connected.

You activate and deactivate each network interface using the gear icon
menu at the bottom of the list. When an interface is deactivated, it
is dimmed.

See if that fixes your sleep issue.

Cheers Ronni

All those apps work fine as they are, Ronni, and they all work with
the Microphone. The problems are all with the iMic device. The
interface to the iMic in all these apps is supplied through Audio/MIDI
Setup, and I think that something in the underlying frameworks between
it and these apps is broken. This theory is supported by the fact that
Finyl Vinyl, Griffin's own interface to the iMic, actually works well.

I agree with the Combo approach (see my reply to Philippe) but that's
going to have to wait until at least the weekend.

No issues with the updater itself. Installed fine on my iMac as well

I have had a number of third party software issues, however. Note
that these are personal experiences only. I have not been able to

The server stopped working after the 10.5.7 upgrade. Uninstalled and
upgraded to 10. Still no go. Again, no complaints yet from other FM
users or administrators.

3. I can no longer use any recording software with my Griffin iMic.
I have tried Wiretap Studio, Amadeus Pro and Audacity. They all
crash heavily when recording starts. /Applications/Utilities/Audio
MIDI Setup, which does not seem to have been updated with 10.5.7, is
quite happy to support the iMic, and my external Altec Lansing

Re: 10.5.7 Update: what experiences?

2009-05-16 Thread Ronda Brown

Hello Stuart,

I just tried with the the utilities on the HD. All that happened
was the blue barber's shop kept rotating. Yes I did leave it for
some time before quitting.

How long is "some time" ... How long did you leave Disk Utility
repairing permissions for?

Repairing permissions in Leopard takes anywhere from 10-40 minutes,
depending on what's installed and what's contained in /Library/
Receipts/bom/.
And If you haven't done repair permissions for some time it takes
longer.
I can remember doing it the first time I installed Leopard on a
machine, and like you, thought it was never going to work ... but
eventually it did!

The repair permissions operation has changed in Leopard.

Under Leopard, Repair Disk Permissions must account for Access Control
Lists (ACLs), a more granular approach to implementing file and
directory permissions. As a result, Repair Disk Permissions requires
far more time to execute than under previous versions of Mac OS X.
Repair Disk Permissions also employs a new permissions database file:
a.receiptdb in the Macintosh HD > Library > Receipts > db folder.
This file is read or updated whenever permissions are verified or
repaired.

The stalling of the progress bar is happening while it's checking or
rebuilding the a.receiptdb, in /Library/Receipts/db/.

To see what's really going on, open that folder in a Finder window,
select list view, launch Disk Utility, select your boot volume, and
click on repair permissions. Watch the Finder window flash files that
are being read and checked against the current a.receiptdb file.

That's what's taking all the time and freezing the progress bar.
Once that's finished, the progress bar starts moving and the
permissions are being checked and repaired.

Try leaving Repair Permissions to run overnight or sometime when you
don't need to use that computer.
Once it finishes repairing permissions the first time, it does not
take quite as long the next time.

Cheers,
Ronni

Note that if you have Safari 4 Beta installed, after upgrading to

you should run Software Update again. When you do, you’ll see a
