My iPhone 3Gs has never given me a problem, everything works
perfectly, but if Apple are going to only update the iOS software
for the iPhone 4, they are ultimately forcing people to update their
iPhones.

Which is similar to OS X 10.6 only being able to run on Intel Macs.

Yep, Apple are becoming greedy!

Hey Daniel,

Our iPhone 3Gs don't get the new text tones, some other functions ... Apple
are wanting people to upgrade to iPhone 4 :-(
Even the current page for iOS 4.2 doesn't note that the new text tones are
iPhone 4 specific, though it does note that GameCenter, AirPrint, and VoiceOver
have device restrictions.

/Quote
Messaging with text tones
Know who’s texting without looking at your screen. Choose from 17 new alerts
and assign custom tones for people in your contact list.
iPhone only.
/End Quote

On the Apple iOS 4.2 page it clearly says the new text tones are iPhone only.
If it was only for the iPhone 4 Apple should have posted that.

Ah well, back to serious work.

Cheers,
Ronni

Hi Rhonda,

I have an iPhone 3GS that I upgraded to OS 4.2.1 and it provides access to text
tones (and Safari search within web page).

To set a text tone, bring up the contact in your contact list and press Edit.
Along with ringtone, there is now a new field text tone.

Safari search within web page was a bit hard to find as well, but type a search
term into the Google search field (the Google label is a bit misleading) and
then instead of hitting the Search button, scroll to the bottom of the
suggested search terms and press an On this page entry.

Cheers,
Carlo

Only had time to do the iPad this morning. It crashed and the only way restore
it was by using a different Mac. So, took quite a while to restore twice and
get everything working.

I haven't tried my iPhone 3GS yet.

 Hi Rhonda,

I have an iPhone 3GS that I upgraded to OS 4.2.1 and it provides access to
text tones (and Safari search within web page).

To set a text tone, bring up the contact in your contact list and press Edit.
Along with ringtone, there is now a new field text tone.

Safari search within web page was a bit hard to find as well, but type a
search term into the Google search field (the Google label is a bit
misleading) and then instead of hitting the Search button, scroll to the
bottom of the suggested search terms and press an On this page entry.

 Cheers,
 Carlo

Even the current page for iOS 4.2 doesn't note that the new text tones are
iPhone 4 specific, though it does note that GameCenter, AirPrint, and
 VoiceOver have device restrictions.

On the Apple iOS 4.2 page it clearly says the new text tones are iPhone
only. If it was only for the iPhone 4 Apple should have posted that.

Ah well, back to serious work.

Had backed up before I started of course :)
Took 4 restores to fix it.
To be fair it does have some old apps on it I need to clean up and it's
 having vodafone issues.
Though I got email working again. Yay me :)

No problems on iPad though and iPhone working properly again, though no
movies and less music as had to rush out and cripple sync :)

 Kind regards
 Daniel

Re: Anyone had any issues with OS 4.2 on your iPad ?

2010-11-22 Thread Ronda Brown

Hi Carlo (sorry I misspelt your name before),

Yes, Apple are becoming greedy I feel, more like Microsoft … my god did I just
mention Apple becoming like Microsoft … yikes!

My iPhone 3Gs has never given me a problem, everything works perfectly, but if
Apple are going to only update the iOS software for the iPhone 4, they are
ultimately forcing people to update their iPhones.
Which is similar to OS X 10.6 only being able to run on Intel Macs.

Yep, Apple are becoming greedy!

Cheers,
Ronni

 Hi Ronni,

I stand corrected. I have only the original 6 tones. So there has been no
miraculous Apple intervention for my personal iPhone. I guess Daniel Kerr is
right when he says that this yet another excuse to upgrade to an iPhone 4. :-)

 Hi Cario,

We are talking about the new 17 text tones that have been added to iphone
4's but not 3gs's. NOT the original 6 text tones that have always been there.
Do you have the neww 17 text tones? If you are you are the only person that
 has ;-)

 Cheers,
 Ronni

2010-11-22 Thread Ronda Brown
Hi Susan,

Before you update on your iPhone, this is how I updated my iPad and didn't have
any problems (as yet).

1. Backup Sync FIRST
2. Then download install the update
3. Let it do another Sync

Hope you don't have any problems with the update on the iPhone.

Cheers,
Ronni

Only had time to do the iPad this morning. It crashed and the only way
