Re: Calculator
I've found slow loading can be a problem if you have too many widgets on display than you need. Great that you can have any number of clocks showing different times around the world, or any number of Unit Converters so as not to have to change settings each time, but if you go overboard with the number of widgets which rely on the internet to pull data, dashboard loading can slow to a crawl. I imagine a data hungry widget or two would have the same effect. For instance, I had a widget from the Bureau of Meteorology. I noticed it always took a while longer than the others to load. So I deleted it, and the whole dashboard loading process increased in speed substantially. The preinstalled Calculator and Unit Converter widget combination are hard to beat for convenience, although the Calculator has only basic functionality. No doubt there's a fancier calculator widget out there though. Cheers, Steven On 12/09/2010, at 4:28 AM, Laura Webb wrote: Thanks Steven. Re: Calculator
I've found the pre-installed weather widget loads quite quickly, ie. the one which if you click on 'i' for information is powered by The Weather Channel and Yahoo! If you bring up your Dashboard, you should see a black and white '+' symbol in the bottom left corner of your screen, ie. a white '+' on a black circular background. If you click on the '+' symbol, a row of optional widgets should slide open, each of which you can drag to the Dashboard as many times as you like (the more copies you drag onto your dashboard, the more slowly the Dashboard widgets load overall). If you don't see an icon for Unit Converter, you need to look at the bottom right corner of your screen, after you've clicked on the '+' symbol, and click on the right-pointing arrow. This should take you to the next suite of widgets available. If you still don't see Unit Converter, keep scrolling through your available widgets by clicking the right arrow again. You can scroll back by clicking the left arrow at the bottom left of your screen, near where the '+' symbol was which will have now turned into an 'x'. If for some reason Unit Converter isn't there, I presume you can find and install it via ... http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard Cheers, Steven On 12/09/2010, at 1:41 PM, Laura Webb wrote: Hi Steven Thank you. I looked at most plans under $100 for Telstra, Optus and Vodaphone and made myself up a pricing plan comparison in Numbers for each phone size and plan. I also looked at one Member Plan at Telstra for the equivalent $40 plan. If you have the phone already, a member plan looks the way to go. The main difference, besides not paying for the phone, is that the $5 data is not included in the member plan but you get $40 worth of calls instead of $35. However, total cost over the two years, including the purchase of a 32GB iPhone either outright or on a phone plan resulted in the phone plan being cheaper. If you'd like, I can email you my Numbers comparison off list. It also has the coverage of the three networks. I ended up going with Telstra mainly for the coverage. From their own maps (all three carriers), Telstra is the only one that virtually covers Rottnest. I have also spoken with a couple of the blokes at work who reside down Mandurah, Rockingham way and each have gone away but returned to Telstra because of difficulties with coverage. Also, assuming I don't use more than my allotted calls and data per month, it's actually cheaper! Now comes the fun part of learning what I'm doing with my iPhone. Is any reader able to supply me with a copy of Calculator app v 3.1? It was last seen with 10.3.8 and I'd like back one of the functions which v 3.2.1 in 10.3.9 has made unavailable. The package can be emailed efficiently using http://www.yousendit.com/ if you have a copy. thanks in advance for any help Nancy M
The Real Story behind Graphing Calculator
This story is a great read. :-) If you've never used it before, this software called Graphing Calculator is really fantastic - I used to use it all the time to demonstrate the new PowerPC Macs with which they were bundled when they first came out back in 1994. Quite mind-blowing even if you didn't know much about maths. Excerpt: It's midnight. I've been working sixteen hours a day, seven days a week. I'm not being paid. In fact, my project was canceled six months ago, so I'm evading security, sneaking into Apple Computer's main offices in the heart of Silicon Valley, doing clandestine volunteer work for an eight-billion-dollar corporation. Only at Apple! You can download a free version for Mac OS X here: http://www.pacifict.com/gc14.dmg -Mart --- http://www.pacifict.com/Story/ The Graphing Calculator Story Copyright © 2004 Ron Avitzur. Pacific Tech's Graphing Calculator has a long history. I began the work in 1985 while in school. That became Milo, and later became part of FrameMaker. Over the last twenty years, many people have contributed to it. Graphing Calculator 1.0, which Apple bundled with the original PowerPC computers, originated under unique circumstances. I used to be a contractor for Apple, working on a secret project. Unfortunately, the computer we were building never saw the light of day. The project was so plagued by politics and ego that when the engineers requested technical oversight, our manager hired a psychologist instead. In August 1993, the project was canceled. A year of my work evaporated, my contract ended, and I was unemployed. I was frustrated by all the wasted effort, so I decided to uncancel my small part of the project. I had been paid to do a job, and I wanted to finish it. My electronic badge still opened Apple's doors, so I just kept showing up. I had many sympathizers. Apple's engineers thought what I was doing was cool. Whenever I gave demos, my colleagues said, I wish I'd had that when I was in school. Those working on Apple's project to change the microprocessor in its computers to the IBM PowerPC were especially supportive. They thought my software would show off the speed of their new machine. None of them was able to hire me, however, so I worked unofficially, in classic skunkworks fashion. I knew nothing about the PowerPC and had no idea how to modify my software to run on it. One August night, after dinner, two guys showed up to announce that they would camp out in my office until the modification was done. The three of us spent the next six hours editing fifty thousand lines of code. The work was delicate surgery requiring arcane knowledge of the MacOS, the PowerPC, and my own software. It would have taken weeks for any one of us working alone. At 1:00 a.m., we trekked to an office that had a PowerPC prototype. We looked at each other, took a deep breath, and launched the application. The monitor burst into flames. We calmly carried it outside to avoid setting off smoke detectors, plugged in another monitor, and tried again. The software hadn't caused the fire; the monitor had just chosen that moment to malfunction. The software ran over fifty times faster than it had run on the old microprocessor. We played with it for a while and agreed, This doesn't suck (high praise in Apple lingo). We had an impressive demo, but it would take months of hard work to turn it into a product. I asked my friend Greg Robbins to help me. His contract in another division at Apple had just ended, so he told his manager that he would start reporting to me. She didn't ask who I was and let him keep his office and badge. In turn, I told people that I was reporting to him. Since that left no managers in the loop, we had no meetings and could be extremely productive. We worked twelve hours a day, seven days a week. Greg had unlimited energy and a perfectionist's attention to detail. He usually stayed behind closed doors programming all day, while I spent much of my time talking with other engineers. Since I had asked him to help as a personal favor, I had to keep pace with him. Thanks to an uncurtained east-facing window in my bedroom, I woke with the dawn and usually arrived ten minutes before Greg did. He would think I had been working for hours and feel obliged to work late to stay on par. I in turn felt obliged to stay as late as he did. This feedback loop created an ever-increasing spiral of productivity. People around the Apple campus saw us all the time and assumed we belonged. Few asked who we were or what we were doing. When someone did ask me, I never lied, but relied on the power of corporate apathy. The conversations usually went like this: Q: Do you work here? A: No. Q: You mean you're a contractor? A: Actually, no. Q: But then who's paying you? A: No one. Q: How do you live? A: I live simply. Q: (Incredulously) What are you doing here?! At that point I'd give

Thanks to all who replied re a calculator that could manage durations. In the end, I decided to go for a physical unit, as I dont have access to and dont want to install a spreadsheet application on my work machine. For anyone who is in need of something similar, I did find a small app called CalcWorks SE which will do the job, but will not accept timecode format without decimals, so, good in a pinch, but not so good if you are used to typing timecode. Ah, do you mean timecodes as in film/video SMPTE timecodes? If so you might also look at 'Calc timecode', available from http://www.hinton.demon.co.uk/mac/macsoft.html Thanks, Shay -- === Shay Telfer Perth, Western Australia Technomancer Join Sungroper in the Opinions for hire [POQ] 2003 World Solar Challenge [EMAIL PROTECTED] fnord http://sungroper.asn.au/

Re: Duration calculator?
Jude - if you have a standard spreadsheet application, you should find that the spreadsheet will do these calculations for you. Maybe look up 'date' or 'dates' in the online manual. Microsoft's Excel certainly calculates duration. Below is an extract from Excel's online help facility (searched the word 'time'). --- How Microsoft Excel performs date and time calculations Microsoft Excel stores dates as sequential numbers known as serial values and stores times as decimal fractions because time is considered a portion of a day. Dates and times are values and therefore can be added, subtracted, and included in other calculations. For example, to determine the difference between two dates, you can subtract one date from the other. You can view a date or time as a serial number or a decimal fraction by changing the format of the cell that contains the date or time to General format. Microsoft Excel supports two date systems: the 1900 and 1904 date systems. The default date system for Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh is 1904. To change to the 1900 date system, click Preferences on the Tools menu, click the Calculation tab, and then clear the 1904 date system check box. The following table shows the first date and the last date for each date system and the serial value associated with each date. DateSystem First Date Last Date 1904 January 2, 1904(serial value 1) December 31, (serial value 2957003) 1900 January 1, 1900(serial value 1) December 31, (serial value 2958465) Note When you enter a date in Microsoft Excel 98 and you enter only two digits for the year, Microsoft Excel enters the year as follows: The years 2000 through 2029 if you type 00 through 29 for the year. For example, if you type 5/28/19, Microsoft Excel assumes the date is May 28, 2019. The years 1930 through 1999 if you type 30 through 99 for the year. For example, if you type 5/28/91, Microsoft Excel assumes the date is May 28, 1991. --- Hope that helps...Steven Date: Thu, 1 Aug 2002 22:43:46 +0800 From: Jude Cotter [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Duration calculator?
