Re: G5 auction

2007-06-28 Thread Mark Secker

LOL seeing used computer prices go up over time is a rather rare pleasure...

a few months back there were so many of them I was tracking 30 or
40 at a time and obviously the old supply/demand equation meant they
went quite cheap now I guess the flood of bleeding edge adopters
of the Mac Pro dumping their G5's for chicken feed has passed.

Actually, its 11% buyers premium. Its easy to get carried away and
forget that one, as I have in the past.

Plus these only have 256 Mb of RAM compared to the ebay one at 768 Mb.

Cheers,

Mike Fuller

Re: : G5 Auction

2007-06-28 Thread Mike Fuller
The $1100 one had a nice 20 Apple monitor. It also had a dual core 2
GHz processor which the buyer didn't realise, until told later.

I bought the only one without a monitor for $725 (with 11% - $804).
It was the only other one that had a dual 2 GHz processor. I'm
itchin' to get it hooked up so I can see what else is inside. I hope
Ray is right about the extra RAM.

Thanks to Robin for the serial number link. It was from this I
determined the two that had dual core processors. And also that mine
was made in March 2006.

These all came from Central Tafe and they had original cartons to
take them home in (nice bonus). Obviously Tafe was doing a complete
makeover because mine came home in a Mac Pro Quad Xeon box. And at
the rate they are being turned over come back next year to pick up
the Mac Pro :-)

HOT DAMN!! now THAT was a good deal that's a 1/3rd what I paid for
my dual 2 GHZ g5 towere a few months back (though mine did have 3 GB
RAM and a 20 apple cinema display so not really complaining)...

congratulations on that - I've found mine to be a total killer

1/20 of the time my old 1Ghz 1GB RAM G4 took (30 seconds V's 10

now please excuse me while I go off sulking about not being able to

Hey

If your correct there Mike and if they were purchased properly they will
have a three year educational warranty which means you have just under two
years left in your warranty.

If so that is an absolute steal!

Ring your local Apple Technician who can then run through the serial number

How much memory did it end up having?

Go to http://www.apple.com/au/support/

...scroll to the bottom of the page and type in the serial number of
the Mac into the About Your Support Coverage field and it'll tell
you all the details including when the item was purchased and if it
has an extended warranty.

Last time I used this, it indicated the date when the warranty
finishes, but it's not saying that for my current MacBook Pro - just
that it is covered under Apple’s Limited Warranty and your date of
purchase was 23-Jan-07 so it looks like you now have to do your own
sums to work out my MBP is covered till Jan 23 2008.

I tried also with one of the others that were auctioned, with the
same result. I think these must have been sold outside the regular
system.

for me all I'd need to do would be to run OSX server - even a G5 mini
mac would do but there's the extra SATA drive bay and the PCI slots as
well for extra firewire and USB...

Hi Mark

Single processor G5s have come up in my rankings of late but I think the
iffy expansion slots issue is a real wet blanket.

You may want to look into this yourself but I've come across a few
grumblings in forums about low throughput for PCI based hard drive
controllers connected to these PCI-only G5s.

This may crop up if you are looking at maximising the storage.
In particular they're talking about SATA controllers, IDE(or PATA) cards
were mentioned too.
I would be interested to see if anyone is saying this in regard to
Firewire cards also.

The upgrade path of a Mac is paramount for me because my last two
PowerMacs have shown me it's importance by providing long and steady
service at *low costs*.

Low noise would be nice though ;-)

Probably too much, like the last Ross's auction I went to where 4 or
5year old base spec G3 iBooks (500mhz 128MB) were selling for only
$300 less than a new 1.32Ghz G4 iBook.

A few months back before I bought my G5 I tracked G5 towers in eBay
and this sort of config (1.6Ghz 256 MB RAM) were going from as much
as $1100 to under $800 without monitor or generic monitor.

Lately been seeing them going for $400-$600 but some being passed in
for as low as $500 (starting bid around $500 but with no offers).

These are towers - some one here at work asked if they were 17 G5
iMacs which is what they want but punching the serial numbers in to
Apple's tech pages sows they are tower units.

For me it would be nice to have one or two of these to play with
for basic server training but honestly I don't think these auctions
attract clued up folk so I'll probably buy one off eBay or here if,
say Daniel, has any more come up in the near future.

Wonder what these will go for

Probably too much, like the last Ross's auction I went to where 4 or
5year old base spec G3 iBooks (500mhz 128MB) were selling for only
$300 less than a new 1.32Ghz G4 iBook.

A few months back before I bought my G5 I tracked G5 towers in eBay
and this sort of config (1.6Ghz 256 MB RAM) were going from as much as
$1100 to under $800 without monitor or generic monitor.

For me it would be nice to have one or two of these to play with for
basic server training but honestly I don't think these auctions
attract clued up folk so I'll probably buy one off eBay or here if,
say Daniel, has any more come up in the near future.

I may be wrong but I think that the 1.6 GHz model only has 'normal' pci
slots:

While this is a factor for me it may not bother others.

Good luck

for me all I'd need to do would be to run OSX server - even a G5 mini
mac would do but there's the extra SATA drive bay and the PCI slots
as well for extra firewire and USB...

and speaking of PCI - can anybody recommend an extra PCI or PCI-X
video card - doesn't need to be dual head (though that would be nice)
but needs to have at least one DVI-I port and have a max 1680 x 1050
rez or better (1920 x 1200 or better would be nice though).

the ATI Radeon X1900 G5 Mac Edition looks cool but seems to be over
kill, overly expensive (around $500AUD ) and can't find local or
Australian stock online.
