If iTunes starts up and runs OK then it's working fine. The problem is with the
data. Since you can't rely on your Time Machine backup then you might find the
procedure outlined at
 to be useful
(steps 1-6 under "Re-creating the iTunes Library file")

The article contains other potentially useful leads as well.

Thanks Susan, but I think you're right Peter, the .XML file must be corrupt.
Also I think this version of Itunes (current) is a real pain!
Can I go back to an earlier version?
How do I uninstall this one safely, there are plenty of ideas on the net
but I don't trust them.
I tried the restore in TM but I think I had a problem with TM a while back
so the backup only goes back to December last year. Won't work for me.

Follow these steps:

1. Open your ~/Music Folder in Finder. Look for your iTunes folder
2. Enter Time Machine, either from the Dock Icon, the /Applications folder or
the Time Machine item in the Menu Bar (if you have it enabled)
3. Time Machine will start, showing your iTunes folder contents "stretching
back" into the past.
4. Choose an appropriate from the time scale at the right of the screen. This
would be a date which would be a day or two before the disaster struck.
5. Click the "Restore" button at the lower right of the screen.

This will give you back a known good iTunes folder (minus anything you might
have added since the disaster, of course, but I'm assuming this hasn't
happened). As I said previously, this is the first stage of troubleshooting. If
all goes well following the restore, then fine. If the problem persists, then
we have something more sinister going in. It seems most likely, though, that
something has happened to the .xml file which track your library's contents.
This could be due to some sort of corruption within the file itself, or because
of some structural change to the iTunes folder contents themselves. This is
why I recommend restoring the entire folder, rather than just the .xml file.

Be aware, too, that depending on the size of your iTunes library, the Restore
process could take some time.

This is certainly the approach I would be taking if it were my system.

2014-01-09 Thread Susan Hastings
I haven't done this myself, but I suggest that you could try a drag and drop
from the backup copy from time machine to your music folder. You may need to re
establish the connection again by pointing iTunes to that folder. Holding down
the option or command key as you open iTunes. I can check on my mac later and
see if this is the correct process and if I can set up these instructions in a
step wise fashion as Ronnie would do.

Absolutely! Since the iTunes library folder lives inside your home folder
(~/Music) it is definitely backed up with TM. If you're using TM then that's
very good news.

It should be a simple matter of restoring a copy of your iTunes folder which
predates the disaster by a few days. I say "should be" but that'a the ideal
situation. It's always possible that the problem lies elsewhere than with the
iTunes folder, but at least it's a starting point.

backup on a G5.
Does Time Machine backup the music library as part of it's job?
