Yes. In 1984, when I lived in Germany, they were installing fibre-optics
in cities.

I'm waiting for iiNet to buy Amcom... at which point there will be

Telecommunications in Australia is characterised
by a geographic area the size of the USA with a
paying population only the size of California.

Region - Population Density
Korea - 501 people/sq km
Japan - 340 people/sq km
Europe - 127 people/sq km
Australia - 2.7 people/sq km

Have fun,
Shay (enjoying ADSL 1 on Westnet, at least until iinet change my plan :)

Re: Westnet bought by iinet

2008-05-08 Thread Ronda Brown

Hi Adam,

Westnet have built a fantastic company… and that’s exactly why iiNet
wanted them. iiNet can’t afford to break that something special that
makes Westnet what they are, so I don’t anticipate anything changing,
except for the better.

Westnet are in a rare situation where they have been bought out, but
the new owner wants them to keep doing exactly what they enjoy doing,
and they don’t want to tamper with that at all (and yes, Westnet
Management does believe them, because it’s worth too much for iiNet to
do anything else). ;-)

On top of that, Westnet get access to all of iiNet’s technology that
Westnet have wanted for a long time, but haven’t been able to get
their hands on.

Things like unbundled ADSL2+, naked ADSL, VoIP etc.
So it can only make Westnet stronger.

Cheers,
Ronni

I just read the announcement from Westnet and got this very strange
feeling of dejavue.
A couple of years ago I worked for WA's largest hardware co-
operative,

CPS (500 stores in the group)
Then they "merged" with Mitre10 (referred to as a joint venture)
Now CPS have all but disappeared.

Let's see what happens with this one eh ?

Hi Ronda ... read my other post.
Sorry to be a "killjoy" but I have heard this all before .. in fact
almost identical reasoning !!

I don't agree with you here Bob, (hope I'm proved right in my
understanding of Westnet's reasons) ;-)

I think this will be a good for WestNet Members.

Why is Westnet joining forces with iiNet:
Westnet Directors have chosen to join forces with iiNet in order to
provide a greater range of products and services to existing and new
members, to allow Westnet to strengthen its standing in the ISP
market and for commercial reasons.

iiNet sees great value in Westnet's achievements as an internet
service provider, notably, our strong levels of customer service, as
rated by independent surveys. Operating the two businesses side by
side will allow us to share the best elements of two independently
successful companies.

What will happen to your current Westnet services?:
Nothing. For existing members and their services, its ‘business as
usual'. Westnet will continue to operate these services into the
future.

What will change?
Westnet aims to bring more products and services to our members,
such as increased ADSL2+ availability, VoIP, and Naked DSL services.
Apart from this, nothing will change from a customer perspective.
You will continue to be served by the team at Westnet for your
technical support, accounts service and for sales of additional
products.
