Re: Update 10.5.2
Just to update you all on this post: Thanks to Ronni again for her input - in the end the machine went to the local technician in Busselton. It appears that I was one of the select few who experienced this problem with the screen freezing after resetting once the update 10.5.2 had completed download. Nobody appears to know why?! It has something to do with the keychains failing to initialize and the machine can only be re-booted from the Leopard disc after a series of other surgical changes have been made to the operating system. Far more common apparently has been problems with graphics on certain machines after the update. Have a good weekend. Hi David, Just another thought. If you are unable to download install the 'OSX 10.5.2 Combo Update' using your iMac, do you have another firewire Mac Computer to use to download the stand alone (Combo) 10.5.2 Update and then use Firewire Target Disk Mode to install the Combo Update to your disabled iMac. The OSX10.5.2 Combo Update can be downloaded from here: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosx1052comboupdate.html Cheers, Ronni -- The WA Macintosh User Group Mailing List -- Archives - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/archives.shtml Guidelines - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtml Unsubscribe - mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thanks Richard I haven't tried it yet but I'm hanging on to your email. Fixing permissions is still an ?hour long process with 10.5.2, but it eventually finishes (unlike the minutes it takes in 10.4). 2. G4 Intel don't go together, but I hope you are applying the correct update for the type of computer that you have (the installer should tell you anyway). Check that you have plenty of free disk space (5 GB), then directly download the combo 10.5.2 updater (350 MB) from Apple (it will end up in the downloads folder). Then restart holding down the shift key, to do a safe boot. It takes a while to start up in safe boot mode because a file system check is run before loading the system user files. Safe boot also prevents potentially incompatible software loading at start up. Then locate the update and run the 10.5.2 installer - hopefully all will go well. My only observed problems were with software update not getting to do the update itself because on one machine, iPhoto had not been used since the last iphoto update, so the new version of iphoto (which alphabetically preceded the MacOSX 10.5.2 update in the update process) couldn't run due to a permissions error, hanging software update and thus prevented the 10.5.2 update from running. Running iPhoto, then rerunning software update fixed the issue. Re: Update 10.5.2
Hi John, Sounds a bit like you are fed up with Leopard. That is unfortunate, you would think Apple would give you a free copy of Tiger to install and run with until they get Leopard and all the related software issues sorted out. After all, you did buy Leopard in good faith that it would run on your machine and with the major software software products you had It wouldn't be any skin of Apple's nose, and it would keep you as a happy customer, which by the sound of your wife, the good-will is dissipating rapidly. Just finished my ibook g4 ( 800 mhz) worked fine, permission verify took 30 mins, permission repair took 16 mins( only one difference) My imac g5, was very slow verify took 40 mins ( many many differences all in system/library/extensions) repair took 20 mins The ibook g4 is under spec ( 866 is min spec) but has no peripherals and seems to be fine. The G5 has two external firewire drives ( 800 GB and 600 Gb), four ipods ( usb) 1 ipod ( firewire) Epson printer, sony video camera, sony still camera ( one usb one firewire) and a usb webcam attached. In both cases I clicked cancel when software installer ( which is set to automatically tell me when the new updates are available) and I actually downloaded the full 350 MB version of the 10.5.2. With the G5 I unplugged all external devices and cancelled all programs ( things like skype and some music stuff which run in the background) and both machines ran through without a hitch. Hi Hugh Thats the most encouraging account I have heard re the update. I have a recent MacBook Pro with 10.5.1 and Im not happy with it at all mainly for the reason unknown to me the keyboard stops working in a very random fashion, in any application where I have to type. Word X seems to be the worst and most annoying since I have heaps of reports to write!! I have rebooted and done pram and persmission quite a few times. This tends to reduce the frequency for awhile then it just starts happening again. Has anyone had this occur and know of any fixes or advice on ways I might stop it happening Im wondering if the update with fix it or make it or other things worse? kind regards chris On 19/02/2008, at 11:08 AM, Hugh Griffiths wrote: Just finished my ibook g4 ( 800 mhz) worked fine, permission verify took 30 mins, permission repair took 16 mins( only one difference) My imac g5, was very slow verify took 40 mins ( many many differences all in system/library/extensions) repair took 20 mins The ibook g4 is under spec ( 866 is min spec) but has no peripherals and seems to be fine. Hi Chris, Have you installed the MacBook Pro Software Update 1.1? This update addresses a responsiveness issue on MacBook and MacBook Pro notebook computers. Some MacBook and MacBook Pro systems may occasionally experience a temporary suspension of keyboard input which can last a minute or longer. The Mac OS X 10.5.1 update is required before installing the MacBook, MacBook Pro Software Update 1.1. http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macbookmacbookprosoftwareupdate11.html Cheers, Ronni On 19/02/2008, at 11:18 AM, Chris Burton wrote: Hi Hugh Thats the most encouraging account I have heard re the update. Chris, Configuring AutoUpdate for Office 2008 By default, Microsoft AutoUpdate for Mac is set to look for updates to Office 2008 applications automatically once per week on a user's computer. However, you can modify the default setting to specify a different schedule. AutoUpdate preferences are stored in the com.microsoft.autoupdate2.plist file in /Users/username/Library/ Preferences. When you are deploying AutoUpdate preferences from a central location, deploy this file. Note If a user is logged in with an administrator account, the user can run AutoUpdate by starting any Office 2008 application and then clicking Check for Updates on the Help menu. Set AutoUpdate preferences • In /Users/username/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/MAU2.0/, double-click Microsoft AutoUpdate.app. • Either click Manually, or click Automatically. • If you are planning to deploy updates centrally, click Manually to prevent automatic updates on users' computers. • If you click Automatically, on the Check for Updates pop-up menu, click the schedule that you want to use for installing updates on user computers. Not sure if this is relevant but Macfixit has this today on its website. Lloyd Problems starting up As with any incremental Mac OS X update, a number of users are experiencing an inability to properly startup after applying Mac OS X 10.5.2. Our tutorial on startup failure provides some insight. Fixes that are proving effective: Startup in Safe mode: Hold the shift key while rebooting your Mac, then just restart normally. Reset NVRAM/PRAM: Shut down your Mac, then start it back up while immediately holding the following keys: Command, Option, P and R. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the third time. Check for problematic login/startup items: Startup in safe mode (hold the Shift key while you startup). Next, go to the Accounts pane of System Preferences and click the Login items tab. Select all the login items and click Remove, then restart. Also, check the /Library/StartupItems and /System/Library/StartupItems folders and remove any third-party items. Look for problematic kernel extensions: Boot in Safe mode, and look in the folder /System/Library/Extensions for any third-party kernel extensions (files that end in .kext). Remove the kernel extensions and check for persistence of the issue. Re: Update 10.5.2
I'm suffering at the moment with an issue post-update where the Dell display connected to my G5 isn't being engaged. After the original 10.5.2 update, my system restarted but the screen remained black. I noticed that my iPod stated it was connected and syncronising however, so I'm believe the computer was running. After I unplugged a bunch of things, including the my firewire iSight and PCI USB 2.0 card it booted up. Subsequent restarts keep bringing back the 'black screen of ignorance.' The solution keeps changing though. The only thing I'm doing consistently is unplugging/replugging the computer. I thought it might be a Graphics card issue (I have an ATI X800) ... It still might turn out to be. The issue only started when I installed the 10.5.2 update though, so it's a pretty unfortunate coincidence if it _is_ a hardware problem. Cheers, Toby. It sounds like Apple Leopard Graphics 1.0 includes significantly improved drivers for some graphics cards resulting in impressive increases in performance in many games. eg many (not all) WoW users have noted significant performance increases: http://www.wowinsider.com/2008/02/11/mac-os-x-10-5-2-brings-big-fps-gains/ from 27.5 FPS to between 45 and 60 FPS on his iMac after installing 10.5.2 and the Leopard Graphics Update (which also just came out today and requires 10.5.2), and our own Adam Holisky went from 30 to 50 FPS on his own first-gen Intel iMac. -Mart On 13/02/2008, at 8:33 AM, Peter Hinchliffe wrote: On 12/02/2008, at 10:02 PM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi Everyone, For those interested, I have updated my Macbook 2.2Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo to 10.5.2 and also some graphics update also from Apple, cannot remember what it was. Update 10.5.2
Hi Everyone, For those interested, I have updated my Macbook 2.2Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo to 10.5.2 and also some graphics update also from Apple, cannot remember what it was. Everything is working without any problems so far. Looks like Apple did a good job of this update. Good night all, Philippe C PS It is so hot in my room that my trusty G5 was sounding like an A380 taking off, so much so that I had to turn it off and use the laptop. At least the little beastie does not seem to protest too much :) -- The WA Macintosh User Group Mailing List -- Archives - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/archives.shtml Guidelines - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtml Unsubscribe - mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]
