Your opinions oregarding 1Password

2011-03-28 Thread Stephen Chape

Hi there folks,

I am getting weighed down with logins and passwords, to the point that I am
having to write them down.
This concerns me as it defeats the purpose of having passwords !
Has anyone experienced the 1Password application and what is your view on this ?

Regards,
Stephen Chape

Hi Stephen,

There is quite a bit of info on 1Password in WAMUG Archives.

1Password, by Agile Web Solutions, can best be described as OS X’s Keychain
concept on steroids.
To quote their website:

1Password takes care of all your online passwords so you can use strong and
unique passwords for every site and never forget any of them! … In short,
1Password keeps track of all your web passwords, automates sign-in, guards from
identity theft, and allows you to stop worrying about your safety while online.

http://agilewebsolutions.com/products/1Password

I have always Keychain Access for all my Passwords and Secure Notes etc.
But have been trying to find time to input all the passwords and information I
have in my Keychain into 1Password.

Finding time is the difficult part ;-)

Cheers,
Ronni

That's a +1 from me - I also use dropbox to keep the logins maintained
across multiple computers.

From memory the licence allows EITHER

One user on multiple computers OR
Multiple users on one computer.

I love it - very Mac-like - it just works.

Cheers

Re: Your opinions oregarding 1Password

2011-03-28 Thread Glenn Nicholas
1Password is excellent software.

An alternative is LastPass. This is nowhere near as easy to use as 1Password
- despite doing the same things as 1Password it is quite clunky in
comparison. However depending on your requirements it has a feature that
could be very important - it allows for secure sharing of passwords with
others (on Windows or Mac), primarily because it stores passwords (securely)
off your computer, not on it. Sharing is something 1Password can't do.

There are two pieces of software out there that I regard as pretty much
mandatory on any Mac that I own: one is 1Password, and the other is Default
Folder (but that's another story). The true magic of 1Password shows itself
when you access a web site that requires authentication. 1Password will capture
your login and password (but only with your permission!) and automatically
create an entry in its database for you. It also puts a very handy little icon
in your browser's toolbar (works with all popular browsers) that gives you
access to many of 1Password's features without launching the software at all.

1Password would be valuable enough for its password capture alone, but it also
keeps track of all your software licence keys, credit card numbers, expiries,
etc (with automatic fill-in on web forms), and even private notes.

It is a bit of work to set up 1Password in the first instance with all your
stuff, but it's time well spent. It does base its password directory on, and
works in concert with, the built-in keychain database, so it pretty much
becomes part of the system. The ability to sync with the iPhone or iPad gives a
very handy and effective backup system as well.

1Password is pretty much perfect at what it is designed to do (not much good at
word processing, though...)

Hi Wamuggers
I find that 1Pasword does not fill in the passwords on sites that require you

Also sometimes I wonder what would happen if one of the writers of this
software went bad or the program was hacked??.
