Re: [WAMUG} Time Machine Backup - post Big Sur and full backup drive

2021-04-12 Thread Peter Crisp
Hi Ronni, thanks for that, I think I read this some years ago and will
use this when I do at some point go for a larger TM backup disc. Late
yesterday I looked at the status and it had in fact moved to the
backing up phase - so it had purged sufficient space from old backups
to permit the new backup to run. When I glanced at it, it had backed
up ~30GB of 230GB - so it is a substantial backup resulting from the
MS Office update and the Big Sur update combined.
This confirms my confidence in TM as patience is important. When it
says it is doing something - it probably is doing something and to
leave it be to allow it to complete what it is doing. Around the time
of my earlier email here, I thought it might accelerate the process if
I plugged in my ethernet connection to the Time Capsule directly as
WiFi would probably have been slower than with an ethernet connection.
I watched the Network connection panel as I connected the ethernet and
it did connect so I assume the data processes between the MBP and the
TM backup disc (a 2TB portable drive attached via hub to the USB of
the TC).

Kind Regards

Peter Crisp

Re: big sur

2020-12-22 Thread Stephen Chape
I updated a few days after release (which is not like me, I usually wait about
a month).
Got a little impatient this time, and I guess the hype got to me too.

Anyway I have had no issues and I really like it.
PS: The Mac start up chime is back .. very nostalgic !

The only issue I did have is that SuperDuper backup is dragging it’s feet.
I have communicated with them via email and they don’t seem very concerned.
Their response was like “ well just be patient or use Time Machine while you
wait"
It will not yet run with Big Sur.

But that’s OK .. I have switched to Carbon Copy Cloner and finding that a more
user friendly interface.
I only use this for my monthly backup that resides in my safe.
My main backup is Time Machine (but just in case everything gets stolen, I
always have the safe backup).

Mac Mail confused me a little at first because I seemed to have a lot more
additional folders than before.
And even some missing.
But now I have sorted them out all is fine there too.

Other than that … VERY PLEASED !

I have been holding off on this upgrade, waiting on some positive reports. All
looked good this morning so, with nothing better to do, I decided now was the
time.

Thankfully, I still have my 13” mid- 2012 MacBook pro running Mojave as the
late 2014 Mac mini is still trying to complete the upgrade to Big Sur. It has
been ove two hours now and still not up and running so I guess it is just a
waiting game.

A very Merry Christmas and happy and safe New Year to one and all.

Great news Philippe. I must say I do feel better about Big Sur overall than I
ever felt about Catalina, which I think was somewhat of a testing ground in
preparation for Big Sur, and a “proof of concept” for going all 64-bit. Even
Kinemac, an animation application I obtained back in 2013 as part of a software
bundle, and has not received an update in all the time since then, has now gone
64-bit with the release of version 2.0! I think all the software thats’s
important to me is now 64-bit, which certainly was not the case at the
beginning of the year! I’ll be moving forward with confidence I think.

Have a great Christmas and all the best for the New Year.

Hi Rosemary and Peter,

I have updated my 21” iMac 3 days ago, after having done a full bootable copy

Don’t see much in the way of problems out there in the wild. I’ll probably
update during the Christmas break. Never did do Catalina, and the problem is
now that the latest versions of Pages, Numbers and Keynote require 10.15 or
later. This will happen with increasing frequency with other apps, especially
as they get updated to work with the M1 processor, so I guess it’s time to move
on anyway.

Re: SuperDuper not compatible with MacOS Big Sur yet ??

2020-12-06 Thread Stephen Chape
Hi again.

I might just wait a little longer for the SuperDuper upgrade.
If not forthcoming soon I may move to CCC.

The reason I use Time Machine and also SuperDuper:-
I feel that if my home is burgled and they take the Mac, the Time Machine drive
will most likely go too.

So on the 1st of each month I take my SSD from my safe and do a SuperDuper
backup.
I also store important files on Dropbox, but not photos and videos because of
their size.

One can never back up too much

2020-12-06 Thread Robin Belford
Dear All,
My experience is
- following a CCC update last week I now have a bootable Big Sur clone of my
computer (as well as the two Time Machine backups). This applies to all the
machines in our house.
- my SuperDuper installations is patiently waiting for an upgrade.

An interesting and annoying side effect of booting into a Bir Sur clone for
testing, is when I boot back into the interanal drive all the pay cards in the
Wallet are disabled. It’s then a non intuitive process to restore them.

Thanks Ronni,

I've had another read of it after you posted it first. I think I’ll rely on
time machine until the solution is clearer.

SuperDuper not compatible with MacOS Big Sur yet ??

2020-12-06 Thread Ronni Brown
Hi Stephen,

https://bombich.com/kb/ccc5/macos-big-sur-known-issues
Some Big Sur startup volumes don't appear in the Startup Disk Preference Pane
In the past, the Startup Disk Preference Pane would list all available startup
volumes, including volumes cloned by CCC (whether CCC used ASR or its own file
copier). Some Big Sur cloned volumes do not appear in the Startup Disk
Preference Pane, despite being perfectly bootable.

We have reported this issue to Apple (FB8889774) and we are currently awaiting
a response.

Workaround: To boot from the cloned volume, restart your Mac while holding down
the Option key, then select the cloned volume in the Startup Manager. When your
Mac has completed booting, you can optionally choose to set the startup disk to
the current startup volume (i.e. if you want the Mac to always boot from the
cloned volume).

Kind Regards,
Ronni

Thanks for that reply Tim.
Are you using something else now then ?
I had thought about looking at Carbon Copy Clone.

I used to use SuperDuper and was pleased you took the initiative to find out
from the manufacturer and share the information with us.

I guess I can use that 1Tb drive for something else now!

SuperDuper not compatible with MacOS Big Sur yet ??

2020-12-06 Thread Stephen Chape
Hi folks.

I am finding this frustrating.
I have emailed Dave at Shirt Pocket only to be told “just use Time Machine in
the meantime”.

Does anyone else in WAMUG use SuperDuper ?
I use Time Machine, but also use SuperDuper at regular intervals on a Drive
locked in my safe.
I have not been able to do my 1st December SuperDuper “safe” backup.
And their seems to be not a lot of concern from Shirt Pocket.

It’s like “oh well you will just have to wait”.

Stephen Chape

For those of you considering updating to Bir Sur.

https://mrmacintosh.com/macos-big-sur-11-list-of-serious-install-upgrade-issues-updated/?utm_source=rss_medium=rss_campaign=macos-big-sur-11-list-of-serious-install-upgrade-issues-updated

Also consider that this only happens to <0.01% of installations and upgrades.
Better odds than driving to the shops.

Yes, it literally crept in this year, pretty much completely unannounced
(officially) by Apple. I think the first I heard about it was on MacWorld on
Friday morning. The second time I heard anything about it was on Sunday from a
client who went ahead and installed it on his 13” Macbook Pro which is now
unresponsive, so as with all first releases of new Mac OS software, treat this
one with extreme caution, at least for the first couple of releases.
