Hi Bill,

Yes, tried that first - then moved onto the hard reboot - still no joy.

I'll follow up on Ronni's suggestions.

Re: Iphone apps - windows close down

2015-11-26 Thread Neil Houghton
OK Ronni, I¹ll check the app versions.

Since the ipad runs a newer IOS I do tend to download the app updates as
Apple indicates. I thought that, in the past, if an app version was not
compatible with the iPhone then iTunes DID NOT apply it to the phone (only
the iPad).

I¹m not sure I use enough of the ³smarts² to justify pending over $1k on a
new mobile phone just now. I could certainly live without the Telstra 24x7
app ;o)

The Pebble app would be more of a problem I¹ll have to check how well it
is working function wise the pebble cam app still lets me take photos with
the iPhone from the watch and shows the camera view on the watch so the
devices ARE communicating.

Re: Iphone apps - windows close down

2015-11-26 Thread Ronni Brown
Hi Neil,

Yes, the iPhone4 is very limited now, you really need to upgrade to a newer
iPhone.
It sounds you might have downloaded versions that are not compatible with your
iPhone4

The following Knowledge Base article offers up the steps on how to install the
latest ‘compatible’ version.

Install the latest compatible version of an app on an earlier version of iOS or
OS X - Apple Support

To download an earlier version of an app, follow these steps:
Open the App Store or Mac App Store.
Go to the Purchased screen on your iOS device or the Purchases tab on your Mac.
Find the app and choose Download. You'll see a message telling you if a
compatible version is available. Tap Confirm to install this version.
If a compatible version isn't available, you can try contacting the app
developer. Look for contact information on the app's product page in the App
Store or Mac App Store.

Cheers,
Ronni

Iphone apps - windows close down

2015-11-26 Thread Neil Houghton
Hope someone can help me with an easy fix here ;o)

Recently some apps on my iPhone have taken to shutting their windows as soon
as I open them. The app opens but, almost immediately the window shuts and
takes me back to the home screen.

The apps are still running in that their window thumbnails show when I
double-click the home button - but if I select that thumbnail - back to the
home screen.

Apps that I was seeing this with were:
Google Maps
Pebble App
Telstra 24x7

I have checked the phone software is up-to-date, downloaded the latest app
updates and hard re-booted the phone. This fixed Google maps but not the
other two.

Any thoughts?

Phone is an iPhone4 so limited to IOS 7.1.2

Cheers

Re: iPhone apps failing to download

Hi Ronni & Peter,
Before trying Ronni's suggestions, I tried Peter's
Quote

"Whenever this happens to me I find that I can solve it by navigating to the
downloading app in the iOS desktop itself. You will see its icon containing an
empty progress bar. Simply tapping the icon generally gets the download
happening again.

Peter HinchliffeApwin "

After tapping away several times as each App appeared on screen, they all did
download!!
Marvellous
So thank you!
Cheers

Re: iPhone apps failing to download

2013-06-10 Thread Ronda Brown
Hi Marcus,

If you are updating via WiFi try logging out of the App Store temporarily.
Navigate to Settings -> iTunes & App Stores > click Apple ID -> then Sign Out.

Now open the App Store App and Navigate to the Featured section.
Scroll to the bottom of the page and touch the Sign In -> Use Existing Apple
ID.
Log in and the stuck apps should reset.

If that doesn't fix the 'stalled installing':

1. Check iTunes and see if you have a pending/stalled download e.g. Podcast,
Books, Music, Movies or iTune U.
Finish off the download and you should be able to update.

2. Connect to iTunes; and Check for available download (under Store).
When download is completed, sync to iPhone

Cheers,
Ronni

It's your computer account (and therefore the copy of iTunes on that computer)
that's tied to the iTunes store, not the iPad. As long as your iPad is set to
synchronise with your iTunes, that's all that is required. You only need to buy
the app for one iPad, and you can then use it on both.

Again, it's not about the iPhone, it's about iTunes. As long as the app lives
in your iTunes account, you can transfer it to other devices such as another
iPhone, an iPod Touch or an iPad

Note that the apps in your iTunes account only become visible when an
app-compatible device is connected (iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad).

Re: iPhone apps

2010-09-24 Thread peta belczowski
Good morning all (what a gorgeous day)

I was doing my morning read of the WAMUG questions, when this series of emails
on iPhone Apps caught my attention.

Only a theoretical question at the moment - well now that I think about it,
three questions.

We have more than 2 AppleMacs in the home, one iPhone and one iPad ( plus
several iPods).

Two household members each have their own completely separate iTune account and
buy their own music of choice for their own Macs.

Question One: If there are two iPads in the house, is it possible to buy Apps
for two iPads from one account? Obviously the original iTunes account (set up
many moons ago) was not initially set up for two of anything).

Question Two: Was/is there a way to transfer the Apps from the iPhone to the
iPad? (This may have happened automatically I can't follow through on that
question within the household at the moment).

Question Three: Is it possible that the Apps already purchased can be
transferred from the existing iPad to a second iPad?

I do of course know that iTunes music can be transferred from the AppleMacs
onto the iPods and the iPhone, and that this also successfully transferred to
the (one at the moment) iPad.

Many thanks for any cheerful assistance (must be cheerful),

Peta

I think there was some 'mischief' when initially setting up new iPhone4, which
cleared after I re-synced my original iPhone. And yes, Pedro is correct the
other apps then became available for the new iPhone.

iPhone apps

2010-09-24 Thread Brian Risbey

We now have two iPhones under the roof, all seems good, will have to try
facetime!

I have two phones set up on iTunes - under the same store account ( it said I
could add another phone as an option).

My question is about 'apps' - I have paid for some, am I able to use them on
both phones or are they limited to just mine?

Re: iPhone Apps

2010-09-02 Thread Ronda Brown

Hi Eugene,

Well, it does work on the iPhone 4 pretty well considering the size of the
screen as compared to the iPad's screen.

"The iPhone 4 handles Pages pretty well. Obvious translation issues mean the
app doesn’t work perfectly – but for an unofficial version, it looks good."

I do hate the Nanny State that puts in concrete paths with handrails
in Geikie Gorge, drops the speed limit of Leach Hwy in Shelly to 70km/
hr and has red arrows that don't go off at every second traffic light
intersection etc.

However, I have noticed myself much more easily drift all over the
road if I use a handheld mobile phone in the car and one friend drove
his Mazda 929 into the back of a truck when trying to SMS and drive on
the freeway, so there seems to be something that much worse about hand-
held phones. I can talk on a hands-free mobile phone in the car and
be a lot less distracted than when holding it in my hand - why? I'm
not sure, maybe the neurons required to keep my arm in the air tip the
balance(!) but it is definitely the case for me.

As a result I am less critical of this particular bit of legislation
for a change! :-)

(mind you the VicRoads guy in the article who said "A phone will only
be allowed to be used for its primary purpose, If it's a phone, it's a
phone" is an idiot and I hope his statement doesn't reflect what is

Talking and answering questions seems to significantly impact the brain
centres used for driving

(Talking to another adult in the car is not as bad as usually they shut
up or scream something useful if conditions are difficult or they're
about to die)

Not sure if anyone's done fMRI's on billboard adverts yet.
Really they should be banning all mobile phone conversations by the
driver whilst driving.

Anyone know what happens if you're using the Tom-Tom iPhone software and
the phone rings? I'm guessing you get lost :)

Have fun,

2009-09-21 Thread Martin Hill
If you read the discussion document, it indicates that you would be ok
as long as you have the GPS or iPhone with GPS software in a hands-
free style cradle on the dashboard. They want to stop people holding
a phone in the hand or on the knees etc while using hands-free or GPS
software etc which I think is a pretty worthy goal. :-)

Hopefully the actual State legislation reflects this.

-Mart

http://www.ntc.gov.au/filemedia/Reports/ARR8thAmendPackageDiscusPapMay08.pdf

"3.10 Rule 299 – Television receivers and visual display units in motor
vehicles
During discussions on rule 300 (mobile phones) the maintenance group
identified that
some new model mobile phones have global positioning system (GPS)
technology. It was
also recognised that there were several GPS devices on the commercial
market which are

portable and could be held in a driver’s hand.
The maintenance group considered the requirement for mobile phones to
be in a fixed
mounted cradle and felt a similar requirement should be made for
portable GPS devices. It
is proposed to amend rule 299 to require that a GPS device must be an
integrated part of

the vehicle or secured in a fixed mounting.

3.11 Rule 300 – Use of mobile phones
State and territory road agencies have raised concern about the
wording of rule 300 of the
Rules in that it does not prohibit the use of a mobile phone, by a
driver while driving, that

is:
• held by the shoulder and neck;
• seated in a cradle and used to send short message service (SMS);
• located on a driver’s knee, hand or the front passenger seat and
used to send SMS or

loud speaker conversation (not near the ear).
Although the rule was modified by the 5th Amendment Package (2005), it
is not considered
that those changes prohibited these additional behaviours. The
original intent of the Rules
was that a driver should not to use a mobile phone while driving,
except by using a
hands-free device. At the time it was not anticipated that some
drivers, while driving,

would circumvent the rule by:
• holding the phone with the neck and shoulder or propped between the
knees;
• holding the phone in the hand, not near the ear, and conducting a
conversation on the

loud speaker facility;
• sending or reading text messages, video messages or e-mails.
The proposed changes are aimed at clarifying the original intent and
explaining when a

mobile phone is permitted to be used by a driver while driving. "

Television receivers and visual display units in motor vehicles: it
is envisaged there
will be no adverse impact on drivers should the proposal be approved.
It is considered
most GPS devices are supplied with car kits, such as mountings, and
there would be no
additional cost. If, however, a driver needed to purchase such a
device they are
commercially available at a very minimal cost. The benefit would be
increased safety

for all road users resulting from lessening driver distractions.

Re: Best Aussie iPhone Apps and others

2008-11-29 Thread Martin Hill
That's true Eugene, and I do indeed have a few weblets that I use
often. However, native apps can really be worth it in less fiddling
around, speed, GPS location finding and all the rest.

In the case of Fuelview, at $3.99 it pays for itself the first time
you fill up. :-)

any of the standard apps like the brilliant Google Maps). Some of
these are free, but many cost a few bucks, but I reckon they are worth
it. I'd be interested to hear what favourites everyone else has:

Aussie Specific Apps:

FuelView - Finally The WA govt's Fuelwatch is actually useful for me.
Shows a list of the fuel prices at petrol stations nearby with the
cheapest at the top with distance and how to get there provided by
Google maps. Brilliant! What's not brilliant is the fact that diesel
is still 137.9 compared to unleaded at 106.9c. :-(

WA Traffic - All of the Main Roads freeway and other webcams
accessible online from the one app (there is a Sydney version
available as well). Great for checking to see if I should avoid the
freeway or not on the commute in to work. What's not good is how
pathetic the reliability of the Main Roads webcams are. This morning,
they are ALL offline. Even when they are online, although they
advertise on the MRD website that the cameras are updated every 5
minutes, it is in reality only every 20 minutes. In addition to
hating Main roads for braindead Traffic Light programming and speed
limit sign placement, here's another reason to hate that particular
govt dept. :-(

Pkt Weather - Much better than the default weather app as it gets far
more detailed and more importantly, more accurate weather observations
and forecasts straight from the Bureau of Meteorology. Also shows
current wind strength and direction (in knots - yay!) for us
windsurfers as well as rain radar etc.

IceTV - Shows upcoming TV schedules and if you have an EyeTV digital
TV tuner and IceTV subscription, allows you to click on a show or
series on your iPhone when you're out and about to record them on your
Mac at home. The IceTV subscription is $99 per year, but in my opinion
worth it if you have an EyeTV for the detailed onscreen program guide
in EyeTV itself (works great with Smart Guides to automatically record
every show that has "David Attenborough" in it no matter what time or
channel for example) as well as this remote scheduling ability.

Toilet Mate - okay you can laugh, but who hasn't at some time needed
to know where the closest public toilet is? Hmmm? yes, I thought
so. Shows the distance and directions in Google Maps. :-)

AU Postcodes - Type in a State or suburb and it will show you the
postcode(s) or type in a postcode and it will show all suburbs with
that pcode.

Qantas - Arrivals and departures at any Australian airport. Accurate
up to the minute when my plane had to divert to Adelaide due to a
heart attack victim on board on the way home from Melbourne. I
actually kept my fellow passengers up to date with the latest delayed
ETA in Perth while we waited on the tarmac. (and yes, the hosties did
say we could use our phones while we waited). :-)

And here are a few other fav apps that aren't specifically Australian,
but are very handy nonetheless:

Jaadu - It may be the most expensive iPhone App I have ever bought at
Au$29, but it is worth it. So much better than MochaVNC. It allows
you to remotely control your Mac or PC via VNC screen sharing, but
also can be used as a numeric keypad or powerpoint controller or
portable trackpad or shortcut keypad even when you are sitting in
front of your computer. It finds Macs or PCs on your local LAN using
Bonjour so you don't need to know IP addresses and it is far more
reliable and robust than the Mocha products as well as featuring
lovely teleport animations and a very useable way of moving the mouse
around and precisely clicking and dragging even with a tiny screen
view of the computer you are controlling. (you can also pinch and
zoom to increase the viewable area)

Onetap Movies - shows the movies and show times at all the cinemas
closest to you. Also shows ratings, reviews and movie trailers.

Stanza - Excellent ebook reader app. Huge online library of free
eBooks a click away. Has a Mac app that can convert just about any
doc into ebooks for easy reading on the iPhone.

Ping - good for network troubleshooting

WiFinder - Good for scanning for open and locked wifi networks that
aren't always visible in the built-in wifi control panel. Free at the
moment while the author tries to get Apple to release new version.

AirSharing - good for filesharing between Mac and iPhone (Discover is
a free alternative)

TideApp - Shows you tide info and predictions for major Australian
ports. The tide chart has pretty basic graphics, but it works.

Surf report - handy if you're a windsurfer and you forgot to bring
your sail. ;-)

Guitar - great guitar app if you actually want to play some guitar
music (using chord notation) strumming chords and plucking individual
strings. Works well even if you don't know how to play guitar. Very
