Favorite Color Episode

2008-09-23 Thread Danny Taylor
See that just goes to show ya, one mans pie is another mans poison. Of all
the color episodes, "Aunt Bee's Big Moment" is one of my favorites. (Dinner
at Eight is probably on the top of the heap tho). Back in that time it was
easier to learn to fly than to drive a car. After all, you don't have to
parallel park a plane. I was flying myself by the time I was 14. I couldn't
even legally drive a car yet. Although I did drive tractors and pickups
around on the farm since I was 13 or so.
It didn't take that many lessons to do a solo flight. Of course there is a
long way to go from soloing to actually getting a pilots license.

Where is Siler City ?

2008-09-23 Thread Holland Shoaf

I just made a post about how Siler City was in the wrong place on a recent post.

In another episode Siler City is in the wrong place.

Howard Sprague was helping out Tommy Parker with his homework. He was being a
big brother to him through some type of helping a kid out thing. Tommy didnt
want to study and cleverly directed Howards attention to his attractive sister
Betty. Tommy told Howard she had a terrible bus ride to Mount Pilot where she
worked at a dance hall and the bus dropped her off in Siler City. IF this gals
working in Mount Pilot, shes going in the wrong way if shes being dropped off
in Siler City.
Whats the reason the writers have put Siler City so close to Mayberry ( and Mt
Pilot ) when in reality its 2 counties away?

thanks

Barney's Replacement - Jerry Van Dyke, well . . . .

2008-09-23 Thread Ron McLendon
If my sources are correct, Jerry Van Dyke (Banjo Playin' Deputy) was offered
the part. He nosed out Don Rickles (The Luck of Newton Monroe) for Barney's
replacement. Now, as I understand, and please correct me if I'm wrong, the
producers were scouting for a suitable replacement. After searching and
auditioning, they came up with these two episodes and stars as final tests for
the replacement. The ratings would be the deciding factor. FWIW, my Sunday
School class will be using "The Luck . . " as one of our lessons in the next
few weeks.

Look closely if you will at the episodes in season 5. The producers were wise
to Don Knotts' impending departure. They respectfully worked with that and
wound it down tastefully. The part was eventually offered to Jerry Van Dyke,
who in my opinion would have taken that part and run like the wind, keeping us
in stitches. But, would it have been the same when season 6 rolled around in
color? Who knows? Anyway, he bowed out for "My Mother The Car". We (most of
us) know how that played out.

Enter now Warren Ferguson. A great comedian, but not a stand-alone guy. His
delivery was too "slapstick" for the show, IMHO.

There, I've said it and I ain't takin' it back! Just my two cents' worth. I
would have made it three cents, but I'm savin' my money for a present for my
girlfriend.

Least favorite episodes

2008-09-23 Thread jlj9675
My least favorite episodes are the one in which the Boone couple are always
fighting; just breaks my heart to see a non-loving marriage; and Senior Play
too. That whole premise of having to accept whatever dance craze was
currently popular with teens as a public performance event is beyond me.
What made it a play? Oh well, we know that despite being the greatest TV
program ever, some of the writers suffered a few lapses in judgement and we
can surely live with that!

Actually, the one where Howard goes to the island captures the essence of
Mayberry. Howard returns to Mayberry and admits he never realized how good he
had it "My pot of gold is right here in Mayberry."

Also, if you ever get to see the epilogue of that one, it shows a priceless
look on Howard's face as he sips a bottle of pop at the station with Andy,
Emmet and Goober. As a dog barks somewhere off in the distant night, the
camera
zooms in on Howard and the look on his face seems to say "This is the life!!!"

DVDs are great, but ...

2008-09-23 Thread Andrew McKenzie
In the discussion over TV Land's steady march away from classic TV, I was
reminded of a somewhat imaginative, humorous idea I had years ago that I
thought might spur some discussion. Before TV Land, I remember mainly
watching TAGS on TBS and occasionally WGN. We taped some of these episodes
and would occasionally watch them on VHS, of course. Then TV Land came
along, which was fantastic because for a while they ran four episodes a
night, I think (in two hour-long slots; each set of two ran for two days, as
well).

But we wondered when there would be a time when we could watch TAGS episodes
in higher quality any time we wanted. Although TV shows on DVD were just
starting to come out, I never gave a thought to the idea that someday TAGS
might be on DVD. So, instead, I remember hoping that one day (if the cost of
operating new channels dropped) there would be an TAGS cable/satellite
channel that would run TAGS and TAGS-related material all day long.

Of course, that seems humorous to me in retrospect, since DVDs
are obviously even higher quality and allow you to watch any episode at any
time. But, like Aunt Bee of Orlando pointed out, there is definitely
something special about knowing there are other TAGS fans watching right
along with you. Even when we have a DVD in, it's nice to think, "Somewhere,
there's a TAGS fan watching this exact same episode."

Anyway, I hope I don't sound too much like bearded Goober with his crazy
theories. I wouldn't want to drive anyone out of their mind!

I definitely agree that no matter what episode of TAGS, I'd rather be
watching it than almost anything else (certainly more than anything on
today). But there are some episodes in which I detect just the least flat
note. The main one that always comes to mind and that I always name is
episode 243, "Aunt Bee's Big Moment," when she learns to fly. Now, I love
aviation, and I love TAGS, but it's hard for me to believe the writers
weren't grasping for ideas—especially since Aunt Bee only learned to drive
in season six (in an episode I like much more). Of course, there are some
humorous moments in the episode (Goober's pancake-eating triumph comes to
mind, along with Andy's fourth-string-in status in the big football game).

What's interesting is that episode 235, "Howard's New Life," is a minor
favorite of mine even though it likewise features a somewhat unrealistic
plot. In fact, the gruff line "Wanna buy a ship in a bottle?" is probably in
my family's top 100 most-quoted TAGS lines. So while there are definitely a
few lackluster episodes (mainly in seasons 6 and 8, in my opinion), they all
have some redeeming qualities, most of all the simple fact that they're TAGS
episodes!

Least Favorite Episode

2008-09-23 Thread Harry Brewbaker
David,  I must admit to being what some people call a Mayberry snob.  I have
never really cared for the color episodes and only have the B&W on DVD.  I
watched all of the color episodes when they originally aired in the 60's (I'm
53) and still watch a few today but am not as familiar with them as I am to the
first 5 years of TAGS.  I love all of the B&W shows but if I had to name my
least favorite, it would have to be Prisoner of Love.  I just didn't care for
the story line of Andy almost falling for the beautiful lady prisoner.  Seemed
out of character to me.

I hope we are not breaking any digest negativity rules by discussing negative
opinions.  Wouldn't want to get in trouble with the head mountie.

Mayberry Confidential is now online

includes the Mayberry Days schedule, articles, photos and all the events for

just Mayberry Days. Also remember to support the business who advertise in the

Tickets for all events except the Dillards Evening concert are still available
and can be purchaced online thru the SAC website or by calling them during

Don't forget about the WBMUTBB Silent Auction on Saturday after the parade - it

LEAST FAVORITE EPISODE

2008-09-23 Thread DAVID QUINN

All of us know that any episode of Andy is better that anything that tries to
pass for comedy in today's television, but we also know some episodes were
better than others.
I know this is going to start a controversy, but while watching "The Senior
Play", (which I think is pretty poorly done), I got to thinking, which episode
of Andy is the absolute worst? My vote is for either "The Senior Play", or the
one where Howard goes to the island. Both of them have very llittle to do with
the main characters of Andy, I guess that is why I do not like them. Don't get
me wrong, I would watch "The Senior Play" every day before I would watch
"Samantha Who", but it is not my favorite.
