  Wednesday morning on MeTV's Perry Mason, there was a plethora of TAGS 
alumni.   The manicurist was accused of murder.Uncle Ollie was the Sheriff. 
   The District Attorney was Old Man McCabe.Finally (Spoiler Alert), the 
real murderer was the Cow Thief, Luke Jensen.
For those of you who have MeTV, tomorrow (Thursday) Perry Mason episode will 
feature the only appearance of Aunt Bee on the show.

   Monday morning on MeTV's Perry Mason, the final episode of the series 
was shown.   There were two TAGS alumni in the show.At first, Briscoe 
Darling was charged with murdering a really sleezy movie star.But it was 
not long before someone murdered Briscoe.Trying his best to give Briscoe an 
alibi was George Stevens, Melissa Stevens' Father/Husband.

 In the Episode "Aunt Bee The Warden", Otis was singing the old song "The 
Dipsy Doodle".Being the curious person I am, I went onto YouTube and looked 
the record up.This song was a big hit by the Tommy Dorsey Band in 1937.
I looked at the record closely and the members of Tommy Dorsey's Band were 
listed.Take a guess who was listed with Tommy Dorsey as featured on the 
record?None other than that old TAGS whistler Earle Hagen.

  On the Thursday MeTV Perry Mason show, there were a lot of TAGS Alumni.   
 There is almost for sure one each day, but I do not comment unless I can find 
at least three.Today the falsely accused murderer was none other than 
Sharon DeSpain.Sitting in the courtroom with her were Naylor the Chicken 
Thrower, and Doctor Harrison Everett Breen.This was one of the better Perry 
Mason Shows.

TAGS Is Everywhere

   In this part of Oklahoma, our cable system carries Antenna TV.I 
don't know if you get it where you are, but at 9 P.M. central time, they show 
old reruns of The Johnny Carson Show.   On Monday night they showed the one 
from November 19, 1980.In one of the early segments, Johnny was talking 
about things that have names that very few people know.For instance, the 
plastic tip on shoe laces is called an aglet.   Then he asked if anyone knew 
what they called the plaster of paris that law enforcement uses to pick up 
footprints.A woman in the audience yelled out "Moulage".Johnny said 
"Right, how did you know that?"   The woman yelled out "I watch the Andy 
Griffith Show".Fans are everywhere, even in 1980.

Alumni Sightings

Earlier this week on MeTV's Perry Mason, they showed "The Case Of The 
Trecherous Toupee".I noticed several TAGS alumni on the show.Otis was 
there as was Orville Monroe.But the obscure TAGS alumni on this show was 
Thomas Browne Henry.I have always enjoyed the acting of Mr. Henry.   He is 
not a handsome leading man, but he is a good actor.

Now I have a little quiz for all of the fans of TAGS.   Thomas Browne Henry 
appeared once on TAGS, and without looking it up can you remember in which 
episode he appeared?Here are a couple of hints, he appeared on the show for 
only about a minute (he did speak), and he was not a resident of Mayberry.
Remember, no cheating.

  On Thanksgiving night, I was flipping through the channels, and stopped 
for a short time on Turner Classic Movies.They were playing that famous 
Cary Grant movie "North By Northwest".   When I got there they were having an 
auction in a room full of people.   The auctioneer was C. J. Hasler and his 
assistant was John Masters.   Cary Grant was trying to get arrested, so he kept 
interrupting the auction.   John Masters finally had to call the police, and 
when the police showed up one of them was Ken Lynch who played a policeman 3 
times on TAGS.

 Saturday morning on Turner Classic Movies, they were playing their usual 
old cowboy movie like we used to watch on Saturday mornings down at the movie 
theater.This one was from 1949, Brand Of Fear,  and starred Jimmy Wakely.   
 The love interest/schoolmarm was The Perfect Female, Gail Davis.She did 
not get to display her sharpshooting talents in this movie.   Jimmy Wakley's 
sidekick was Cannonball played by Ben Beecham, Emmitt's Brother-In-Law.

PRICES

I have given this subject a lot of thought, and I have came up with a ratio 
of 10X.For instance, in the 60's a hamburger cost a quarter.Today it is 
about $2.50.   Bottle of pop, a dime.Today it is a dollar.  Minimum wage 
dollar and a quarter, today it is around $12.50.   Gallon of gas 30 cents, 
today it is at least $3.00, maybe a little more.   Economy car 2 grand in the 
60's.   Today most economy cars are around 20 grand.
I take note when people walk in front of Foley's market, and I find most of the 
prices in his window about what they were in the 60's.   Oh, for the good old 
days when things were cheap, and no one had any money to buy that cheap stuff.

Goldbrick Wheeler was the Judge.
Another passing note, today (August 23), is the 91st birthday of TAGS favorite 
manicurist.   Even at 91 she is still being done well by Mother Nature.

called "Skyscraper Souls".   It was a very old movie made in 1932.In the 
movie I spotted Wallace Ford, AKA Roger Hanover.   All during the movie he was

 Jeff, I am not a very good trained noticer, so I do not know which episode 
that is.   I do know the location where Andy and Barney are standing.   It is 
the next street over from the courthouse.
By the way, that TV Guide in the background, with a picture of Pat Boone and 
Arthur Godfrey on it is the edition of 9-15 March, 1957.   I know because I 
have that copy right now in the littlest room in my house where I read it from 
time to time.   Since TAGS began in the fall of 1960, I believe that magazine 
merchant will have a little trouble selling that particular edition of the TV 
Guide.

appeared in the first scene of TCOT Scandalous Sculptor.   On TAGS she 
portraited Mrs. Jeffries and Mrs. Bixby.My favorite of her roles was on old 
time radio though.On Fibber McGee and Molly, she was Mrs. Uppington.

Tobin (Dapper Dan, On My Word As A, Gentleman),  and Jonathan Hole (Proprietor 
of Orville Monroe?s Funeral Home and TV Repair). Not a direct link but June

   This time of year I sure do get aggravated having to rake all the leaves 
in my yard.Some times I wish that Andy would have shared his magic tree 
secret.I know Andy had a tree in his yard, because I saw Goober sitting in 
it and one time Aunt Bee backed her car into it.But for the entire 8 years 
I watched the show, not once did I ever see Andy or Opie rake a single leaf.
I sure wish I knew how they did it.

repossessed Jim Lindsey's fancy little car.   That repoing can be a dangerous 
profession.

TAGS alumni.
There was Ruta Lee (The girl who pretended to be a magazine writer, and Darlene 
Mason), Frank Albertson (Colonel Watson when Gomer joins the Marines), J. Pat 
O'Malley (Mrs. Mendelbright's boyfriend), and finally Dabbs Greer (Naylor the 
Chicken Thrower).
This is the Perry Mason episode where Naylor jumps up at the end of the show 
and says "Yes I killed that big windbag".

was on. The Burns hired a plumber, and you will never guess who it was.

Junction.There was an Old Maid and her brother visiting the Shady Rest 
Hotel.You will never guess who played the Old Maid. None other than

Tom Jacobs

[DAVID QUINN]

 Tom Jacobs did not speak in many of his appearances on TAGS.However, in 
the episode where Goober takes the car apart, there is a scene where people are 
standing outside the courthouse, and Tom Jacobs says "How did he do it"?He 
is not shown saying the words, but that is his voice.

Now, my observation - I know Danny Thomas's older brother, Tom Jacobs,
appeared in over 70 episodes of TAGS as an extra in non-speaking parts. He
is usually walking down the street, wearing a wide-brimmed hat, and stops
to watch something happening as part of a group (although sometimes solo as
well). But until the other day, I never noticed that he was the neighbor
with the ladder when Otis was trying to escape from the Taylor house in
"Aunt Bee, The Warden" (at least I think it's him).

scene with her where she was drinking a cocktail in a nightclub, but it was not 
a sazerac.Hank Patterson who played the hobo when Barney found a quarter of 
a million dollars was also on hand.I watch Hank Patterson most every night 
on MeTV's Green Acres where he is the father to a pig.

Saturday afternoon on MeTV, I was watching "Wanted Dead Or Alive".There 
were a couple of bounty hunters on the show that arrested the Mayor like Barney 
arrested Mayor Pike.But these two bounty hunters not only arrested the 
Mayor, they killed him.
But getting back to the Alumni part, the head bounty hunter was Frank Smith.   
(His name would have to be Frank).
I do not think that was Angela Cartwright in Miss Crump's classroom.She was 
simply too big of a star at this time to be playing unbilled parts.She had 
just finished 10 years on The Danny Thomas Show, and was about to start 
starring on Lost In Space.

 I find it hard to believe that there are 111 comedy shows better than The 
Andy Griffith Show.   If you gave me a Big Chief Tablet, and a week, I could

would put Beverly Hillbillies ahead of TAGS, and even maybe I Love Lucy, but 
111 others?Give me a break.Remember in 1968 TAGS finished the year in 
first place among all shows, not just comedy shows.How many other comedy 
shows finished the year at #1?I looked it up, and the answer is very few.

 This morning on MeTV, I saw Barney in a show.   Here is the plot:   Barney 
tells Andy he is going to buy a car.So he buys a used car from a woman.
The car Barney buys turns out to be a lemon, everything is wrong with it.So 
he tries to return the car.   Hey TAGS fans, does that plot sound familiar?
Well I was not watching TAGS, but I was watching Matlock.   The difference in 
the story is that instead of arresting the crooked car dealer, the crooked car 
dealer wound up dead.   I won't tell you who done it but Barney did not.

7Central, they show Horror Movies under the title of Svengoolie.Most 
Saturdays it is something along the lines of "The Monster From Out of Town"

they are going to show "The Ghost and Mr. Chicken".So everyone set your

1940 movie called "Gambling On The High Seas".In the movie Frank Ferguson 
played the District Attorney.I looked it up and this was the very first

Frank Ferguson was also in the very first scene ever in TAGS while he was 
marrying Rose The Housekeeper.

In the episode "Aunt Bee The Swinger", when John Canfield first arrives in 
town, he is sitting downtown on a bench in front of a store.I think it is 
the store is across the street from Floyd's, but it might have been on the next 
block over where the Fun Girls were arrested for speeding. Anyway, while he 
is sitting on that bench, several people come up to talk to him, including 
Helen and Aunt Bee.While he is talking, you can see clearly over his right 
shoulder, in the store window,  cans of BAB-O scouring powder.The cans have 
been turned a little, but it is clearly BAB-O.BAB-O is no longer made, but 
it lives in my memory forever.

 Today is the 60th Anniversary of our beloved Andy Griffith Show.60 
years ago today was a Monday night, and at 9:30 P.M. Eastern, 8:30 P.M. 
Central, Andy and Opie took their first walk to the fishing hole.In the 
beginning TAGS aired after "The Danny Thomas Show".TAGS finished their 
first season as the 4th most popular television show.I would say that is

Smoking

 There were several times that Andy smoked, but unless I am mistaken, there was 
only one time that Barney smoked a cigarette.It was in the show "Citizen's 
Arrest", when Barney was locked up in the jail.
But here is something that trained noticers can watch for.In the episode 
"The Song Festers", Barney is sitting in the back of the hall all alone after 
Gover leaves.   If you look real closely, you can see the outline of a pack of 
cigarettes in Barney's pocket.   That is because in real life, Don Knotts 
smoked quite a bit.

Andy's High School girlfriend.She was charged with the murder, but someone 
else did it.
Speaking of silent scenes, I always think about the silent scene in "Prisoner 
of Love".Andy is at home and he comes out onto the porch smoking a 
cigarette.   You can almost read his mind, but nothing is said for quite a 
while.   Then he goes to the courthouse.

 Sunday morning on Turner Classic Movies, they showed the 1948 movie "Sitting 
Pretty".It was the movie that introduced Mr. Belvedere into our culture.
Clifton Webb played a male baby sitter.Anyway, in the beginning of the 
movie, there was Thelma Lou doing some baby sitting for the main family.  While 
the family was away, instead of baby sitting, Thelma Lou was giving a party.
When the husband and wife came home, there was Thelma Lou and her boyfriend 
dancing just the same way that Gomer and Mary Grace danced.

WALLACE FORD

   Tuesday morning I was watching Turner Classic Movies.They had a movie 
from 1932 on called "Beast of The City".It was an OK gangster movie, but 
one of the main players was Wallace Ford.   I almost did not recognize him 
because he was so young.It was only his 4th movie.He had over 100 more 
appearances in the movies and television before 1964 when he played Roger 
Hanover on TAGS.His role as Roger Hanover was his next to last role.He 
played in "Patch of Blue" in 1965, and died the next year.

my Mama was born.   It was also the year Herbert Hoover was President.

   I remember Doris Packer playing Mrs. Osborne on The Many Loves of Dobie 
Gillis when I was a small boy.   Almost 60 years later I can still remember a 
specific line from the show about her.Maynard Krebs (Dud Wash on TAGS) was 
saying to Dobie that Mrs. Osborne was really rich.Dobie asked Maynard how 
rich she was and he said (remember this show was in the early 60's) "She is so 
rich she has a 1986 Rolls Royce".
All these years later I still laugh at that line.

 Hey Paul, believe it or not Ferlin Husky was a movie star.The other

Pondering

 Just sitting here pondering about TAGS. On the episode about the cow 
thief, where Luke Jensen puts shoes on the cow, Mayor Stoner is all up in arms 
over the stealing.He even goes so far as to bring in an outside consultant 
to try to solve the crime.But if you think about it, Roy Stoner is the 
Mayor of Mayberry. Common sense would dictate that there would be no cattle 
located in Mayberry city.Why does the Mayor get so excited over something 
that is not in his purview?

mistake I had never noticed before.In one of the final scenes that takes 
place in Orville Hendrick's barn, Andy finished talking to him and walks out.   
 Barney is sitting in the driver's seat of the Squad Car and Andy tells him to 
leave.So Barney reached down with his right hand and starts the Squad Car, 
puts it in gear, and leaves.
As Ken Anderson can tell you so well, the 1962 Ford Galaxie has the ignition 
switch on the left hand side of the steering wheel, not the right side.
Just noticing.

On Friday's MeTV's Perry Mason, I had a quadruple TAGS sighting. The 
sheriff of the town was Uncle Ollie.The District Attorney was rich Mr. 
McCabe. The manicurist was the girlfriend of the murdered man. And, 
(SPOILER ALERT), old Luke Jensen, the cow thief, was the murderer.

Just a quick heads up, on Monday's MeTV's Perry Mason, Aunt Bee will make her 
only appearance on that show, playing the, what else, aunt of the accused 
murderer.It will be on MeTV at 8 A.M. CDT if you want to see it.

Saturday morning on MeTV's "Have Gun Will Travel" there was a triple TAGS 
sighting.   I see TAGS alumni every day, so I do not pay much attention unless 
there are at least 3 in one show.
First the low down skunk of a Sheriff of the town was David Browne (Buddy 
Ebsen).The owner of the saloon was Mr. McBeevee, and finally the judge was 
Hank Patterson, the man who played the hobo on "If I Had a Quarter Million".

  I have mentioned on this site before that I am a big fan of Old Time Radio.   
 You can hear a lot of Mayberry folks on Old Time Radio shows.For instance 
Floyd and Mayor Stoner both co-starred on "Gunsmoke".
Anyway, one of the shows I listen to is called "Those Were The Days", out of 
Chicago, Il. on station WDCB.They broadcast every Saturday afternoon from 
1-5 PM. If you do not live in the Chicago area, you can listen on your 
computer at wdcb.org. The reason I bring this up is that "Those Were The 
Days" is doing a 4 hour tribute to Betty Lynn on Saturday afternoon, May 4, 
2019.Besides playing 3 old time radio shows starring Ms. Lynn, they will be 
doing a 1 hour interview with her by telephone.   The interview is already 
recorded, and I have read a small excerpt.It is quite interesting. So 
if you are able, try to catch Thelma Lou on radio before she became Thelma Lou.
For those who are busy on Saturday, the website "Those Were The Days - 
Nostalgia Digest" will have the show in archive for 2 weeks beginning 8 May 
2019.

   Saturday morning on MeTV, there was Lydia Crosswaithe giving birth to a son 
on Have Gun Will Travel.It was an approximation of the Christmas Story.
So I guess you could say she was playing the Holy Mother.

I never know how to label Josie Lloyd.She was on TAGS 4 times and had 4 
different names, although 2 of them were similar.

While I am here let me bring up one other thing.The other day I was 
watching the 2nd episode of "The Beverly Hillibillies".Jed is telling Ellie 
that she was just a little girl when her mama passed.That got me to 
thinking, was there ever any episode of TAGS where Andy (or anyone else) comes 
right out and says Opie's mother died?I just do not recall such a thing.

Death In The Family

Overnight comes word that Sam Jones has passed.Fitting that another 
TAGS alumni, Ramona Ankrum, his former wife announced the news to the world.

In real life, Ken Berry and Jackie Joseph were once married to each other.
Another little known fact, they were born only 4 days apart from each other.

RIP Sam Jones.

Lies

   I have known my father for 65 years, and praise the Lord, he is still alive. 
   For all of those 65 years he has been a church going, God fearing man. 
In all that time I have never heard him tell a single lie. Not a fib, not a 
white lie, nothing.When he said "When I get home tonight you are getting a 
whipping", I immediately began to stuff magazines in my underwear.
All of this was brought to mind this afternoon when I was watching the TAGS 
episode "The Clubmen", where Andy and Barney visit the Esquire Club.After 
they get back to Mayberry, Aunt Bee is on the phone with Mrs. Sims when she 
tells her "I have to go because I have some cherry popovers in the oven".
Fact is, Aunt Bee has no popovers of any kind in the oven, and this is a lie.
This got me to thinking, how many other times can we think of where a main 
character on TAGS has told an out-and-out big lie?
