When the Taylors rode by the Whiskey a Go-Go club on Sunset Boulevard in 'Taylors in Hollywood' (11/1/1965), their tour guide bus driver called it one of them go-go clubs. The hip dancing there came by accident. A DJ started dancing during Johnny Rivers' set in July 1965, and the audience thought it was part of his act. In 1966, the club (along with 'The Ash Grove' on Melrose) was a happening place to be. In Morgantown, West Virginia, you have Don Knotts Boulevard and even a smaller residential street named Fife St. Nearby, on I-68 is Cooper's Rock State Park, where (according to Knott's autobiography) he had a near death experience over the edge of a mountain. Burns' comedy partner, Avery Schreiber, was a series regular on 'My Mother the Car', starring Jerry Van Dyke. Van Dyke claims he was considered for replacing Don Knotts; His manager, Richard O. Linke says not. The Andy Griffith Show: A Prequel
Seeing that 'Star Trek' was just released and depicts what happened before TOS debuted in 1966, it would be neat to see a prequel to TAGS. It would chronicle when Andy met his wife, the birth of Opie, et cetera. After Andy's wife dies, there would be a good dramatic scene with a lot of anger and angst, much like Lonesome Rhodes in 'A Face in the Crowd.' I can't see a prequel to TAGS being a major movie release, BUT it would be a nice, little black and white experimental piece in film making using the same vintage camera equipment they utilized on TAGS. TV Land has recently been airing 'The Beverly Hillbillies' episodes with Shorty Kellems (Shug Fisher) and Miss Gloria Buckles (Bettina Brenna). Brenna appeared in 8 episodes of 'The Beverly Hillbillies' from the 8th season. Bettina is now the wife of Richard O. Linke, associate producer of TAGS and Andy Griffith's former personal manager. Speaking of the Airport films, George Kennedy (who appeared in TAGS' 'The Big House' (5/6/1963)), appeared in all of them as Joe Patrone. He even appeared in an airplane hostage scene in 'Delta Force' (1986). The Airport genre of films started out all right in 1970 with 'Airport', but fizzled out by 'Concorde:Airport 1979.' The latter was almost a comedy, with, among other scenes, Avery Schreiber (Jack Burns' comedy partner from the 1960s) visiting the cockpit. I would hate to be on his flight! On Disc 3 of 'Gomer Pyle USMC' Season 1 is a special feature of Jim Nabors' appearance on 'The David Frost Show.' I would place the time frame at 1970/1971 judging by Nabors' look and Frost's mention of 'Gomer Pyle USMC' now being in reruns. Ron Howard's theatrical release 'Frost/Nixon' is expected to garner some big box. Gomers' final season (1968-1969) transpired during the transition in power from the Johnson to Nixon administration. So, in essence, the interview subject matter between Frost and Nixon had its seeds planted in 1969 during the waning days of Gomer and Nabors' appearance on 'The David Frost Show.' I doubt President Nixon had David Frost laughing like Jim Nabors did. (Then again, you never know!) Curious. For all prolific fans of TAGS, I would recommend purchasing 'Gomer Pyle USMC' Season 5 on DVD, just recently released. (You know where to buy it! - Whose store is being robbed?) I like it for the sole reason of having Sheldon Leonard appear, playing a director in 'A Star is Not Born' (November 22, 1968). Leonard, of course, directed two episodes of TAGS: 'The New Housekeeper' (October 3, 1960) and 'The Bazaar' (October 11, 1965). It's nice to see Sheldon acting in a role as he probably really was in real life during the TAGS era, yelling at script meetings and Danny Thomas with that loud, authoritarian voice. Ronnie Schell has a scene from this Gomer episode on a blooper reel that he shows at his concerts. The crew pulls a prank on Leonard when they abruptly turn out the lights and leave during filming. Seeing Sheldon Leonard in 1968 in 'A Star is Not Born' captures him at the climax of his production endeavors, with a true fan knowing the things he had already accomplished and the things that were to come. That Championship Season
From a true fan's perspective of TAGS, it's hard to narrow down a particular favorite season. Interestingly, according to the Nielsen ratings, the eighth and final season was ranked the best in the history of the series with 'Barney Hosts a Summit Meeting' being the highest rated single episode. BUT, those numbers really mean nothing to a TAGS purist. ALL of the seasons contained excellent work. There is really not a bad episode of TAGS produced, even though Andy, at the time, acknowledged bad scripts publicly. The pace slowed considerably after Don Knotts departed. All this being said, I would have to rate the 4th season of TAGS as being the best creatively. (A few miles away is Dulles Airport, where the Clampetts flew in for the Washington D.C. episodes of 'The Beverly Hillbillies.') While really promoting Tinkerbell from Walt Disney's 'Peter Pan', Margaret did have a neat photo of a scene from 'Andy Forecloses', which featured herself, Sam Edwards, Will Wright, and Andy Griffith. Mayberry Crash Test Dummies
There is a new commercial airing right now that features the talents of both Mayberry deputies, Barney Fife (Don Knotts) and Warren Ferguson (Jack Burns). The ad, featuring the two crash test dummies with one voiced by Jack Burns, combines footage of Barney Fife spliced from a scene of TAGS blended with recent footage of the dummies. Warren idolized Barney Fife in 'The Legend of Barney Fife' and, today, voicing a dummie, has no qualms about Barney issuing him a ticket for not wearing a seat belt. Jack Burns went through a little bitterness for a few years after his stint on TAGS ended. But as far as television pop-culture nostalgia goes, Burns didn't mind lending his voice for this commercial. P.S. On the 'Mayberry R.F.D.' on DVD tip, hang tight people. It's coming. The Blu-Vue, mentioned in the TAGS episode 'Opie's Fortune' (November 16, 1964) was the first motel in Mt. Airy, built during the motel boom across the United States in the 1950s. Jack Teagarden's name appears in the end credits of the episode 'Sheriff Barney' (December 25, 1961), but he is nowhere to be seen. Jack Teagarden was the father of all trombone players that a 15 year old Andy Griffith was awestruck by in the film 'Birth of the Blues' in 1941. Presumably what happened was that the scene he appeared in was deleted and his name was not removed from the credits. (This is just like the Stanley Farrar non-appearance in 'Goober Takes a Car Apart.') Treasury Agent Stand-Ins on 'A Black Day For Mayberry'
Look at the scene where Rance Howard and the other gentleman portraying a U.S. Treasury agent enter the courthouse in 'A Black Day For Mayberry.' After saying We'll wait! to Barney, they both sit down. They remove their hats. Opie then enters the scene. Slow down your DVD as Opie walks past the seated agents. The two agents are wearing hats and one of them is definitely NOT Rance Howard. As the scene progresses, Rance is seen again. Could one of the gentlemen seated as Opie walks by be the inspiration for 'A Beautiful Mind', which Ron Howard won his Oscar for 'Best Director?' Curious! Both Andy Griffith and Don Knotts sported their real teeth during TAGS. I believe by the 1970s, they both received veneers. Andy makes reference to Joy Ellison's missing teeth in 'Andy Forecloses.' I was watching 'Opie and Mike' ,episode #248, recently. In the scene where new neighbors are moving in next to the Taylors, you can see the studio buildings across the road from the residential street on the Forty Acres lot. I believe you can also catch a glimpse of the buildings in 'The Darlings are Coming' when Andy first walks over to meet the Darlings with a wire running out of his pants. The 'Stranger in Town' Ten Years Later (William Lanteau)
For a good look at Ed Sawyer (William Lanteau) ten years after he was in Mayberry, look at the 'Sanford and Son' episode 'Crossed Swords.' This is, incidentally, the first episode of 'Sanford and Son.' It was taped in late 1971. William Lanteau plays a clerk in a Beverly Hills antique shop. Howard Morris Voices
Yesterday, I was surrounded by Howard Morris' voice in stereo as Hanna Barbera's 'Squiddly Diddly' was being broadcast on the 'Boomerang' channel on about 20 televisions at the local K-MART. It echoed quite nicely throughout the electronics department and into other departments as well in the relatively empty store. You could call it a souped up rendering of Leonard Blush from WMPD. The Oak Tree at Forty Acres
I like Ken's classic story about the consequences of either preserving the tree or removing the tree. But for all intents and TAGS purposes, they probably removed that oak tree when they razed the Forty Acres lot in 1977. They paved paradise and put up a parking lot, office buildings, and condos. But if you stand in any one spot and look up, that view looks the same. Don't forget on this Super Bowl XLI that Opie admired Johnny Unitas of the Baltimore Colts as mentioned in 'Opie Flunks Arithmetic', Don Knotts last episode as a cast regular. Johnny U. held that football on the end. The Super Bowl debuted during TAGS' seventh season. The Baltimore Colts were in Super Bowls III and V. They won Super Bowl V by a field goal in January 1971, the same time 'The New Andy Griffith Show' began. But sadly,before the 1971-1972 NFL season began, the CBS rural slaughter had already taken place. Aunt Bee, Goober, Batman, and Robin
The same technique of using a stunt driver as Aunt Bee was used with Batman(Adam West) on 'Batman.' Goober, the passenger, was seen with a stuntman as Aunt Bee in the reckless driving scenes;Robin (Burt Ward) was seen as the passenger with the stunt driver as Batman in the fast driving scenes. Incidentally, the Batmobile was driven on the Forty Acres back lot in the 'Batman' clincher episode with False Face in 1966. 'Batman', the ABC series, had just debuted in January 1966 when the TAGS episode 'Aunt Bee Learns to Drive' first aired on February 7, 1966. So, the production of this TAGS episode probably coincided with the filming of the first episodes of 'Batman.' On a recent post to WBMUTBB, someone mentioned seeing Miss Mayberry Erma Bishop (Lillian Bronson) in a film with some great Hollywood actors. Lillian Bronson went on to portray Fonzie's grandmother, Grandma Nussbaum, in the 'Happy Days' episode 'Fonzie Moves In' from 1975. And remember, Opie spied Fonzie spending his Christmas Eve alone eating a sandwich and a can of ravioli. Happy Christmas! (Meat and potatoes in one end and plum pudding in the other). Don't Open Until December 25, 1961
While it is the Christmas season, many references are being made to the episode 'Christmas Story' (December 19, 1960). A year after 'Christmas Story' originally aired, a TAGS episode actually aired on Christmas night, December 25, 1961. That episode was 'Sheriff Barney.' It's a small shame that TAGS didn't step into Christmas more than once during its run.
