2024-07-09 Thread Joe
I thought this was worth posting on the Bulletin Board. It's an excerpt
from a recent article in *The Buffalo News *about the retirement of the
police chief of a small village up here in Western NY:

*"John J. Swick, the longest-serving police chief in New York State, is
trading his badge for a fishing pole.*

*Swick marked his final day as Village of Middleport police chief Friday
after 46 years with the department, including 37 years as its leader.
Swick’s youngest son, Jeffrey, remembers when his father walked to work
most days, living right down the street from the police station*

* His longtime friend Ross Annable said "**I call him the Andy Taylor of
Middleport from ‘The Andy Griffith Show,’ because he keeps the peace and
takes care of his community and knows everybody".*

*That's quite a compliment.*

Watching an old episode of Benson yesterday from 1980 and the doctor in this
episode was "Howard Sprague" Jack Dodson but looked strange. He had no
mustache!! Plus he had gained quite a bit of weight just like all us old folks
seem to do! He was excellent in this show, had humor, great part, great
dialogue!
TheCameraNuWelford is on again!PS...in a western, might have been Tales of
Wells Fargo, can't remember from a while back, there was Brisco, Rosco, and
Col. Harvey all in the same show!! Brisco was a crook who had an untimely end
and Col. Harvey had a special elixir he was sipping!!ws

Make that quadruple! Dub Taylor, a 4-appearance TAGS actor most probably
known as a "Fed" - Talbot the postman & Billy Ray a postman.
He was also the circuit preacher hitchin' Charlene and Dud (#1) in a
Mountain Wedding and Emmett's brother-in-law, Ben Beecham.

His last role may have been missed by many as it's a color episode, just
like the Gunsmoke episode (season 12, 1967) shown on MeTV Thursday.

Dub's real first name was Walter, but he was called "W" - a nickname as a
boy and eventually it was shorted to "Dub".

Watching MeTV last night, I was a little surprised to see Ken Lynch (Capt.
Barker in "The Manhunt", FBI agent in "A Black Day for Mayberry") on "All

repairman trying to fix the Bunker's fridge. Maybe Aunt Bee should have
called him when Andy told her to "Call the man!"

Then, on "Dick Van Dyke", there was Mr. Jackson, the pompous magazine
editor from "Andy on Trial" (Roy Roberts) , as a pompous sponsor of the
Allen Brady Show - married to none other than the snooty Mrs. Bixby (Isabel
Randolph) of the Women's Historical Society in "A Plaque for Mayberry". Now
that is a match made in heaven.

Andy tells Opie not to pull horsehairs out of the lapel on his suit jacket.
What is that about? Thanks

According to The Horsehair Jacket Canvas -Tailoring – A Hand Tailored
Suit

Horsehair, also known as horsehair canvas or hair canvas, is a woven
interfacing that provides excellent sturdiness and has a coarse texture.
Despite its name, it is not a thick material and can feel rough to the touch,
making it unsuitable for wearing next to the skin.

Horsehair is commonly used in fine tailoring, particularly for achieving a
beautifully rolled lapel. In bespoke suits, horsehair is often used in the
jacket to ensure that it maintains its shape.

In the past, horsehair was used in crinoline petticoats to support oversized
skirts. However, most of what is sold as "horsehair" today is actually
synthetic and made from materials such as polyester or nylon. Historically,
horsehair was made from the tail hair of horses, which is stiff and strong.

Re: Where is everyone?

2024-03-02 Thread Janet Anderson
Well, as for me, I really slacked off on posting to the digest because I had so
much trouble with my posts not going through. It's discouraging to spend time
and effort writing a post and then never seeing it appear on the digest; or, as
in a few cases, seeing it appear several days or a week or two later when it's
not relevant anymore. I don't know what caused that because I didn't used to
have that problem, and I've been a member of the digest for well over twenty
years. Having said that, I do still read every digest that I get.

I do not spend a whole lot of time on Facebook, but I do read and post more
there. It's immediate, you can post photos, and it's easier to interact with
folks. The digest still has its place, but I think we all have to admit that
it's pretty "old school" these days! I commend Allan for keeping it going for
those who don't do Facebook.

Now, I just hope this post goes through and I see it in tomorrow's digest!

Aunt Bee and Rock Hudson

2023-11-29 Thread Dennis Beal
I happened to watch some of the old Western movie "Horizons West" (1960) last
night. Aunt Bee (Frances Bavier) played the mother of a young Rock Hudson! This
is interesting because in the TAGS episode "Mayberry Goes Hollywood" Andy asks
Aunt Bee if Rock Hudson was her favorite actor. Of course she agreed since she
once played his mother!

In addition to Aunt Bee, Nurse Mary Simpson (Julie Adams) played the wife of
the bad guy (Raymond Burr / a.k.a. Perry Mason). A young Dennis Weaver (Chester
on "Gunsmoke") was also on it. And you know what? He didn't walk like Chester.
I'm sure Goober was disappointed.

old reruns of The Johnny Carson Show. On Monday night they showed the one
from November 19, 1980.In one of the early segments, Johnny was talking
about things that have names that very few people know. For instance, the
plastic tip on shoe laces is called an aglet. Then he asked if anyone knew
what they called the plaster of paris that law enforcement uses to pick up
footprints.A woman in the audience yelled out "Moulage".Johnny said
"Right, how did you know that?" The woman yelled out "I watch the Andy
Griffith Show".Fans are everywhere, even in 1980.

Now I have a little quiz for all of the fans of TAGS. Thomas Browne Henry
appeared once on TAGS, and without looking it up can you remember in which

TAGS fans,
If you're interested in hearing the Gunsmoke radio episode where John Dehner
plays a seller of patent medicine (much like his Colonel Harvey character on
TAGS), look for the episode from Nov 14, 1953 titled "Professor Lute Bone".
There are several places on-line where you can listen to or even download
Gunsmoke episodes. Howard McNear has a good part in the episode as Doc and, of

   1. Gunsmoke on TAGS, of Vice-Verse (m white)

TAGS fans,
Was listening to a "Gunsmoke" radio drama from 1953. Doc (Howard McNear) was
all upset when Matt got back into Dodge because there was a man peddling a
miracle elixir cure that contained opium. The "Professor" peddling the miracle
cure was played by John Dehner, who of course was still peddling miracle cures
a hundred years or so later in Mayberry as Colonel Harvey! Let's just say
Mayberry was much more friendly to him than Dodge.
Then, in the next episode, Matt went up against an army deserter and suspected
murderer played by James Best, aka the Guitar Player Jim Lindsey.
And having listened now to the first two seasons of Gunsmoke on radio, Howard
McNear is listed as one of the stars but John Dehner, who is on more episodes,
is only ever listed as a guest star.

killed him. I killed the big gas bag.”, (The Case of the Prudent Prosecutor).
Aunt Bee has a vital role in The Case of the Crimson Kiss. And you can’t
forget the very first episode with Whitney Blake (The Case of the Restless
Redhead) as she’s being pursued by some nefarious hoodlums. I’ve counted as
many as 4 TAGS links in one episode. Even if you don’t care for the show, DVR
some and fast forward to see how many you count.

Harriet, the chicken thief, and big fan of Perry’s private detective, Paul
Drake.

Gary's alumni sightings

2023-10-01 Thread Joe
It is pretty amazing how many TAGS alumni are in so many classic 1950's and
1960's television shows. The list goes on and onfrom "Perry Mason",
"The Twilight Zone", "Gunsmoke" to comedies like "The Dick Van Dyke Show".
A talented group of actors and actresses.

Schallert and Hope Summers showed up. In the second Gunsmoke Jon Lormer showed
up. In Bonanza Ken Lynch made an appearance. Finally on Wanted Dead or Alive
R. G. Armstrong showed up. Quite the day for TAGS alumni.

Re: Mayberry Days during the week

2023-09-16 Thread Jeff Koontz
>Hello , what are your thoughts on Mayberry Days during the week compared to
>the weekend ?
Holland - it all depends on what you want. There are a lot more people coming
in early to avoid the crowds than there used to be, but you have the advantage
of being an hour away and enjoying Mount Airy during the "off season" when
downtown isn't as crowded. There are things to do during the week and that
includes just getting a bottle of pop, sitting down and counting cars.

The schedule is now online at
https://www.surryarts.org/mayberrydays/schedule.html. Weekday activities
include a guided backstage tour of the Playhouse, John Floyd "The Mouth of
Mayberry" comedy show, and movies at the Earle.
Other possibilities not on the schedule:
- Walk right into Snappy Lunch without the line- Take your time going thru the
Andy Griffith Museum without Bernie crowding you- Learn about Surry County
music history at the Old Time Music Heritage Hall (included with AGM
admission). The Women in Old-Time Music is their latest exhibit- Mount Airy
Regional History Museum is downtown- Take a squadcar tour- Go see the world's
largest open face granite quarry- (This goes for everyone)  Stop in at the
Playhouse and come say hey. I'm headed to Mount Airy on Monday and will be
helping the Arts Council all week
Safe travels,Jeff

Mayberry Days goings on

2023-09-16 Thread Harriet Browder
It’s been years since I attended but if you’re not into golf you can skip that
day. Keep up on all the MD goings on here…

https://www.surryarts.org/mayberrydays/

Some of the main stars have passed on so there isn’t as much that includes
whos-who anymore but there is still plenty to do. Besides, you’re not supposed
to be in a hurry. You know that, don’t ya? 

Hello , what are your thoughts on Mayberry Days during the week compared to the
weekend ?
Last time I went ( maybe 2 or was it 3 years ago, there was barely anything
going on/ kind of like any other day up there )., Would this
still be expected during the weekdays of Mayberry Days ?

Thank you

In the color show, The Taylor's Go To Hollywood,  I saw something interesting.
When they are having a big send off at the bus stop and the bus rolls up, off
in the distance I could see a big studio building and a busy freeway.I looked
up the 40 acres Backlot and could see the layout.Fascinating.  Just fascinating

Aunt Bee driving

2023-09-10 Thread Ron Blankenship
In the episode, "Aunt Bee Learns to Drive", S6E21, after she accidentally
hits the tree, she damages the right rear of the car. She and the man from
the city go around to look at the damage, but when they get there, they're
looking at the side that's on front of the tree, not where it was damaged.
