While watching a local program today the host was interviewing Tuwanda Coleman, who is retiring from co-hosting another local show. Retiring after 41 years at News Channel 5 in Nashville. Ms. Coleman was talking about doing interviews with Don Knotts and Betty Lynn, she said she loved watching The Andy Griffith Show. She said that was one of the biggest thrills of her career. Pets names.....and Barney in the army
First, to those folks who wrote in with all those TAGS names for their pets - thanks for sharing that - especially Ben from West Virginia. Really clever and fun to read. As far as Barney being a WWII veteran - I'm pretty sure during "Quiet Sam" in Season 1, they talked about serving in the Army during the Korean War - which definitely would fit the timeline for graduating in 1945. Got a nice surprise today. I had left the family room, went to the computer to do some things and heard a familiar voice from the tv, unmistakenly that of our Barney. I went back into the tv room and found him guest-starring on a show from the early 90s I believe called Step by Step. What a pleasure to see him in uniform again! Barney reciting the preamble to the Constitution
While watching Andy holding the book on Barney while he recites the Preamble, we are all aware of Barney's hair. It came to me that since they only used one camera they had to shoot the same scene several times. The hair was a side effect of this method. Andy and Barney Early Jobs
According to TAGS episodes, we know that Andy and Barney grew up together in Mayberry and then graduated from Mayberry Union High. We also know that they both served in the army. However, then we know basically nothing about what either of them did until they were in the sheriff department in 1960. Of course Andy had gotten married about five years prior to that and had been sheriff for a short time, but there is about a ten year or so time span that is unaccounted for. So my question to you is this. What kind of jobs do you think Barney and Andy had between the times that they were in the army and when they joined the sheriff's department? I don't recall this ever being discussed before. I imagine they both returned to Mayberry when discharged from the army, so what did they then do? -- Ken Anderson The Mayberry Guru 2906 May Street Eau Claire, Wisconsin 54701 www.themayberryguru.com www.mayberryreflections.com ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.wbmutbb.com/

I am trying to decide what black and white TAGS without Barney would be my favorite. Of course, I prefer the ones with Barney, but there are some good ones without him. Barney Runs for Sheriff
Today I watched an episode from Season 5, Barney Runs for Sheriff. In that episode Andy is contemplating taking an executive job offer from his friend Ed Crumbpacker. I find it very odd that Andy does not file a petition to run for Sheriff before he is offered the executive job from his friend. It seems that Andy was "putting the cart before the horse". Andy could have easily withdrawn his petition, if he was indeed offered the executive job. For Andy to assume he had the job and not to complete a petition for Sheriff was really strange considering Andy is normally very analytical when it comes to decision making. Being a trained noticer, I saw the episode Barney Gets His Man the other day on WDBJ Ch7 in Roanoke VA and I happened to notice a weird lighting effect. Andy and Barney in the city (Where?)
A couple of things with regard to the Oregon discussion from earlier. 1. In the episode Barney and the choir same season but earlier episode, Andy refers to the wanted flyers from Raleigh. This establishes that their location is North Carolina prior to the City episode. 2. In the Big city episode he tells Aunt Bee they would only be gone for 2 days. 3. Barney' Chants
I don't get on here very often and I don't claim to be a top notch "Trained Noticer."But what I discovered yesterday may be the mother lode of Notices.I was watching my DVD episode of "The Jinx"...where Barney claims Henry Bennettwill ruin the fishing contest if he goes with Andy and Barney. In the episode barneyrecites three supposedly good luck chants. "Come fish come, come fish come, Sam's at the gate with a frosted cake, Come fish come" "Fly away buzzard, fly away crow, way down south where the winds don't blowRub your nose and give two winks, and save us from this awful jinx" "Wink'um Pink'um, nodamus rex, protect us all from the man with the hex." Now knowing Barney he wasn't superstitious, just cautious. But I think if we reallystudy these chants we can see it wasn't Henry Bennett being a jinx but barney's chantsthat sunk Andy's boat. Notice the first chant it has 13 four letter word...13=an unlucky numberNotice the second chant it also has 13 four letter words...13=an unlucky numberNotice the third chant it has 13 words...13= an unlucky number So it wasn't the jinx of Henry Bennett that sunk Andy's boat it was the three (un)luckychants by Barney Fife. Dave Ramsey/ Barney Fife
A few days ago there was a Mayberry reference on The Dave Ramsey Show. If anyone is unfamiliar with this program, it is a radio show where folks call in with questions about money. A caller wanted to know Dave's opinion on homeowners' associations. His response was that most of the time they're fine, but once in a while you'll get one with a "Barney Fife" in charge, in other words, someone who abuses their limited authority and makes everybody miserable with their nitpicking attention to every minor regulation. I wonder what Dave would think about the financial habits of certain folks in Mayberry? Such as Barney trying to sell real estate, Aunt Bee trying to save money by buying a large quantity of beef, or a stranger turning up with a treasure map trying to convince locals to invest in his scheme. Paul Mulik Well Paul, I give Dave kudos for calling him Fife instead of Fice for starters. Secondly I suspect Dave's council to any of them would be "get out of debt first and foremost". ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
Besmirching Andy and Barney
Yesterday I posted a reference to Mayberry that was in a mystery I am reading. Well folks, I am about to the end of the book when another reference to Mayberry appeared. And this one really has me tensed. The author actually besmirched the sheriff's department of Mayberry. Here is the exert. "You think I'm killing those people?" I asked. "Zero possibility." The definitive answer surprised me. "Why?" "Who do you think you're dealing with, Mayberry PD" Now if that isn't besmirching the good name of Andy and Barney, I don't know what does. Now if that author ever shows his face here in Eau Claire, you can be sure I will challenge him to a duel at high noon. Barney Cracks Another Walker Robbery
Just heard over my police scanner that Barney has cracked another robbery case at Walker Drug Store. It appears a man was apprehended yesterday afternoon after Miss Ellie called Barney to say she notice a great deal of hand soap was missing. Turns out the perpetrator Barney arrested was a klepterminerac with a hand washing compellsion. When asked why he stole the soap, the robber said, "Cause I am rotten." Now here is a true story. At the supermarket where I work we have a regular customer who comes in about every two weeks. The only thing he eve buys is shampoo. He always buys between 20 and 30 bottles each time. I asked him once if he buys for a group home or another facility and he said no that he uses it all himself. I am serious, he does this every two or three weeks all year long. Now he definitely must have a hair washing compellsion. -- Ken Anderson The Mayberry Guru 2906 May Street Eau Claire, Wisconsin 54701 www.themayberryguru.com www.mayberryreflections.com ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
Andy & Barney cousins
>>>But peoples answers brought up a question. I know Barney referred to Andy as >>>a cousin on the first episode but never again, right? I wonder why.<<< I saw an interview one time with Sheldon Leonard, the producer of TAGS. He was asked about this, and his answer was that it was just a throwaway line used strictly for the joke that this scene was building up to (Barney thanking Andy for hiring him as his deputy in the first episode). Mr. Leonard said it was only mentioned that one time and then forgotten about. However, he obviously didn't recall that it was mentioned in a couple other early episodes. So it was stated more than once, but I don't think it ever came up later in the series. It would seem, based upon remarks both Andy and Barney made, that past the first season, we were to think of them as only good friends and not relatives. In fact, in one episode I believe they say that they had been friends since fourth grade. If they were cousins, they would have known each other since very early in life, I would think. Scene with Andy and Barney in squad car
I'm watching "Man in the Middle" from season five, and I just noticed something. There's a scene where Barney is picking Andy up in the squad car in front of Andy's house, and Andy tries to patch things up with Barney over the argument they had concerning Thelma Lou and Helen. They sit in the squad car and talk with the doors closed. However, when the camera moves in tighter, it's apparent that it is shooting through an open door, not through the window of a closed door. If you look carefully, you can see the inside edges of the door frame, and on Barney's side, you can even see a little bit of the open door in the top left corner. So, when the camera is on Barney's side, his door is open and Andy's is closed, and when it's on Andy's side, his door is open and Barney's is closed. But, of course, the viewer is supposed to think that both doors are closed the whole time. It's a very minor thing, but I just never noticed it before now, and I'm always excited to notice something n ew on TAGS.
