Well, a tough one to choose, for sure. I guess I would have to pick "Opie
the Birdman" as the episode which, to me, really highlights the core story
line of TAGS - the relationship of father and son, and the important life
lessons learned. It's not the funniest episode, but the lesson Andy teaches
Opie is such a valuable one, and the writing, acting, photography, and
directing were excellent across-the board.

Don, I'm from the Midwest, and I am on board with you. I have never had leg of
lamb, and I don't think I've ever even seen it in a grocery store. There are
people who raise sheep around here, but you just don't see lamb in the stores,
and I've never heard anybody talk about eating it either. The only time you
hear a reference to lamb is in Greek food. Although I'm not from the South, I
never figured leg of lamb was a Southern dish. My assumption is that the
writers (who were usually from a different region and culture than Andy)
thought this one up. It does surprise me a bit that Andy didn't object to that
in favor of a more authentic Southern dish.

Favorite Disc from TAGS DVDs

Lots of talk about favorite and least favorite episodes, but let's try this for
a poll...What is your favorite disc from the TAGS DVD series? (I'm talking
about the complete season DVDs, not the 50th Anniversary DVD set or any of the
other one-offs.)
For me, there is no contest...it is Season Four, Disc One.
That disc has both my favorite episode of the entire series ("Sermon For
Today") and my wife's favorite ("Briscoe Declares for Aunt Bee"). Another of my
top 5 or 10 episodes is "Gomer the Houseguest". The disc also has "Opie the
BIrdman", "The Haunted House", "Ernest T. Bass Joins the Army" and "Black Day
for Mayberry".  Not a lemon in the whole bunch!
I would also say season 4 is probably my favorite season, as the cast really
was hitting its stride then...Andy had lost the real hayseed image that was
portrayed in the early seasons, and the chemistry between Andy and Barney was
really at the top of its game.

My least favorite and in truth, downright disliked episode is the one in
which Fred and Jenny Boone are always fighting. I hate the whole concept

I may be stepping on a few toes or break some rules but there are two episodes
that I do not like.? The one where Andy and Barney are practicing self defense
against someone with a knife.? The other one is when Barney gets frustrated
when he recites something, I don't know what it is, and he messes up his hair.?
These two incidents took way too much to time to do in my opinion.? Some people
like it and some people don't.? Count me in as someone who doesn't.?

As far as a least favorite B episode, I would have to submit "Andy and Opie-
Housekeepers" as the premise of the episode was rather thin
and overplayed. Especially, the alternate cleaning up/dirtying up of the house
seemed vaguely irritating.
The payoff, though was funny when Clara Edwards stormed out of the house in
indignation after her cleaning efforts were discounted!

My favorite scene is one that I think represents the best of what "TAGS" is all
about. In "The Cow Thief" when Barney leaves with the mayor and the
investigator after Andy explains his theory of how the cows are disappearing,
he returns. When Barney starts to say "I remember when another mayor said you

those lines). That scene gets me every time!

I thought I would share Otis Campbell's three favorite bible verses. Now I

couldn't resist sharing this.
*Proverbs 21: 9*

It is better to live in a corner of the housetop than in a house shared
with a quarrelsome wife.

*Proverbs 21:15*

A continual dripping on a rainy day and a quarrelsome wife are alike.

*Proverbs 21: 19*

It is better to live in a desert land than with a quarrelsome and fretful
woman.

Here's a question for everyone.

Sometimes the music that accompanies the story in episodes of TAGS almost
becomes an additional character in a scene. What is your favorite scene
where the music adds to the moment? Now, to be clear, I'm not talking
about someone playing music or singing in a scene (so that rules out good
'ol 14A, Ange's guitar, and Barn's harmonica), but the accompanying score
by Earle Hagan and others.

For me, it's in Aunt Bee the Warden. That boogie playing when Otis

My Favorite Martian and TAGS

2013-05-30 Thread Paul W. Pyle
I watched My Favorite Martian season 1, episode 1 (1963) last night. It's
another favorite of mine from childhood. Imagine my surprise when I found
connections to TAGS! First, this episode, and the only one that I have
found, was directed by Sheldon Leonard (IMDb doesn't even credit him).
Second, here's the best part..when the Martian crash lands his spaceship it
lands in exactly the same spot at Myers Lake where Andy and Opie make the
turn to go to the lake!! Bill Bixby drives his car (this road with it's
little fence is often seen in TAGS too) and runs down the hill, crosses the
Andy/Opie pathway to the spot of the crash.

So all this in addition to the appearance of Bill Bixby as the rich kid in
TAGS Bailey's Bad Boy in Season 2 (1/15/62). This TAGS episode was also
co-written by Ben Gershman who also wrote 11 episodes of Martian. So maybe
it was this TAGS appearance that got him picked to do the Tim O'Hara role in
My Favorite Martian if you think about the Sheldon connection.

As a side note: In Bailey's Bad Boy the scene of the squad car speeding
down the road is the same scene used in Aunt Bee the Warden.

Andy Griffith Show. She said he tried to tell her it was Andy Griffin, but she
had heard Griffith enough from me, to know the truth. Of course, I had to call
him over on the playground and get more info. He appears to watch it from DVDs
and his favorite character is Opie. He didn't have a favorite show yet. He did
like my Barney pride sniff imitation though. Now this kid is going places! I
just had to share- what 8 year old, not related to you, do you know who says
Andy is his favorite TV show?? Pretty cool, huh?

4 of my favorite shows!

2012-08-11 Thread Greg Boe
Last night, I got to experience the joy of 4 of my favorite shows coming
together on one TV show!

As I watched the Twilight Zone episode on ME TV last evening (Back There),
I was pleased to see Russell Johnson (the Professor on Gilligan's Island),
Raymond Bailey (Mr. Drysdale on the Beverly Hillbillies), and Paul Hartman
(Emmitt Clark on the Andy Griffith Show) in the same episode!

It was a treat for my senses!!

Favorite Quotes

2012-01-11 Thread Larry Hamrick
Hey, Mayberry friends. Things have been kinda' quiet on the digest lately so
here's something we haven't done in a while.
Favorite Quotes.
Andy: 'Barney, have you been?you have!'
Barney: 'Rule #1, Obey all rules.'
Opie: 'Just what can you do with a grown woman?'
Aunt Bee: 'I stay in the house too much.'
Gomer: 'Water and air's free, now gas, we make a charge for that.'
Floyd: 'You gotta' go to Mt. Pilot to get a good suit.'
Goober: 'Ain't you gotta' jack?'
Howard: 'I'll have to ask Mother.'
Helen: 'What are you, some kind of Svengali?'
Ellie: 'Women are just stupid little fools.'
Otis: 'Food and water for my men and horses.'
Skippy: 'Hi, Bernie.'
Daphne: 'Hello doll.' (a classic)
Clara: 'Maybe a little more allspice.'
Big Maude: 'She's a convicted husband beater.'
Leonora Poltice: 'I've just given you an A in breathing.'
Briscoe: 'Justa' bed and a bible.'

I could go on and on.

If you're a TAGS fan, it's hard to pick a favorite quote, favorite episode,
favorite character. They're all so good.

When you read these, let your mind go back to that scene. Great stuff.

My favorite scene: Barney reciting the Preamble. So, so funny.

If you like, share yours.

favorite girl song

2011-05-27 Thread Larry Hamrick
Hey, Mayberry friends. So thankful Paul and all our Mayberry friends are safe
after the storms. Prayers really work. Makes you remember what is important in
life.

Ellie gets my vote for favorite girlfriend. There's a recurring theme in all of
Andy's girls and that is they all have a lot of spunk. Remember Ellie, Peggy
and Helen getting mad at Andy. 'Whew', a womans scorn!

My favorite song is 'A Capella' or anything by Barn. So funny. Also, anything
by the Darlings (Dillards). Got time to breathe, got time for
music..Briscoe Darling.

Favorite girlfriend/favorite song

2011-05-26 Thread Debbie Whisenant
Helen was my least favorite of all Andy's girlfriends--she was always mad at
him about something. Peggy was a close second favorite, but Ellie was my IT
girl. Look at that smile--just as toothy! Loved, loved Ellie. I also loved
her chemistry with Opie. Helen never seemed to lose her school teacher
persona to develop a mothering-type relationship with Opie, as did Ellie, or
even Peggy, who was so sweet to him.

And as far as favorite songs, I think Ellie and Andy's Away in a Manger in
The Christmas Story was just beautiful. Lovely harmony. I read that she
was very nervous about singing that duet with him, so he had her rehearse a
few times and one was so perfect that they filmed it and just used it. It
was over before she knew it. I wish she had stayed for more seasons

OK, so last night at dinner, while watching TAGS, my husband and I got to
discussing all of Andy's girlfriends, and I thought it would be interesting
to find out who everyone's favorite girlfriend of Andy would be. My
personal fave was Ellie, the lady druggist (Pharmacy Gal). Anyone else have
