{Spam?} Gunsmoke on TAGS
TAGS fans, If you're interested in hearing the Gunsmoke radio episode where John Dehner plays a seller of patent medicine (much like his Colonel Harvey character on TAGS), look for the episode from Nov 14, 1953 titled "Professor Lute Bone". There are several places on-line where you can listen to or even download Gunsmoke episodes. Howard McNear has a good part in the episode as Doc and, of course, Parley Baer is Chester. Re: Gunsmoke and TAGS
And let's not forget Chester was played by Parley Baer who went on to play Mayor Stoner on TAGS. 1. Gunsmoke on TAGS, of Vice-Verse (m white) TAGS fans, Was listening to a "Gunsmoke" radio drama from 1953. Doc (Howard McNear) was all upset when Matt got back into Dodge because there was a man peddling a miracle elixir cure that contained opium. The "Professor" peddling the miracle cure was played by John Dehner, who of course was still peddling miracle cures a hundred years or so later in Mayberry as Colonel Harvey! Let's just say Mayberry was much more friendly to him than Dodge. Then, in the next episode, Matt went up against an army deserter and suspected murderer played by James Best, aka the Guitar Player Jim Lindsey. And having listened now to the first two seasons of Gunsmoke on radio, Howard McNear is listed as one of the stars but John Dehner, who is on more episodes, is only ever listed as a guest star. Mayberry-ish Gunsmoke
I watched the Gunsmoke Season 11 episode "Malachi" this morning. In this episode, Malachi the town drunk receives a letter from his brother Ethan, stating that he will be stopping by for a brief visit when his stage passes through. This sends Malachi into a bit of a tizzy. It seems Malachi has told his brother that HE is the marshal of Dodge City. Since it's only for a couple hours, and since Matt's out of town, Festus and Doc help him get all cleaned up and attempt to pass him off as the marshal, allowing Malachi to save face after boasting so to his brother Ralph. I mean Ethan--portrayed by Edward Andrews from Aunt Bee and the Lecturer. Bet you all will never guess who else turns out to have a nasty relationship with the bottle! Radio Gunsmoke - Floyd and Mayor Stoner
Speaking of Gunsmoke, on the radio version of Gunsmoke, which aired from 1952-1961, our very own barber, Howard McNear, portrayed Doc Adams alongside William Conrad's Matt and Parley Baer's Chester. Now that makes ya thank. Was Mayberry really Dodge City, or vise versa? Old Time Radio Gunsmoke with Howard McNear and Parley Bear
For those who have not discovered this Old Time Radio Western channel. You can hear our favorite barber, Howard McNear, as Doc Adams on radio Gunsmoke and Parley Bear (mayor Stoner, Roy Stoner) as Chester. Chester is right up front, making and serving coffee as usual, but stay tuned, at 7:44 you can catch McNear chatting with Miss Kitty in the Long Branch. Strange but the beginning of The Lone Ranger is the lead-in music, later we hear the regular Gunsmoke theme. Can anyone shed light on why they lead in with The Lone Ranger? So which came first? Both were on radio before TV. Gunsmoke ran from 1952-1961 (then on TV 1955 - 1975) and The Lone Ranger came on radio in 1933 (then on TV 1949 - 1957). http://www.stitcher.com/podcast/old-time-radio-westerns/e/49887870?autoplay=true Harriet, the chicken thief, hiding out in Kelsey's Woods, USA Johnny Paul Jason says chewing tar is good for the teeth..That's an old wives taleJohnny Paul ain't married. ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.wbmutbb.com/

Floyd on Gunsmoke
Hi all, Recently, I attended the Spirit of the Cowboy Festival down in McKinney, Texas, and it was such an invigorating experience, I've begun to renew my interest in westerns. At the event were the cast of the Virginian, as well as Robert Fuller (Laramie, Emergency), Alex Cord (numerous, Stagecoach, Gunsmoke), Paul Petersen (Donna Reed, F-Troop), as well as others. Remembering that Howard McNear portrayed Doc Adams on the radio version of "Gunsmoke" (which preceded the t.v. version) prior to TAGS, it was interesting that William Conrad (Cannon) played Marshall Dillon, while Parley Baer (Mayor Stoner) played Chester! Obie Tater on Gunsmoke
I just finished watching Season 1 Disc 1 of Gunsmoke. Episode 5 was entitled Obie Tater, about a character with the same name. The name sounds a lot like a character we're all a little more familiar with. I've never heard this mentioned, but I wonder if Obie was maybe the slightest bit of an inspiration for our Opie Taylor, airing 5 years before TAGS on the same network. I've been watching the first season of Gunsmoke. Last night I watched Episode 2, "Hot Spell," in which our Andy's Uncle Ollie (played by James Westerfield) pitted himself against Aunt Bee's Medicine Man, Colonel Harvey (portrayed by John Dehner). I won't tell the outcome of the episode, but I will give the hint that this was several years before either feller appeared on TAGS. BTW, I've heard John Dehner's last name pronounced "Dinner" on both of our Mayberry podcasts, but on all the old-time radio shows I've heard, his name was pronounced DAY-ner. I think Dehner played the bad guy on every other episode of the radio Gunsmoke. ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
