One more tidbit: I remember that once or twice Barney swore in deputies with an oath that included the phrase, "...City of Mayberry, County of Mayberry..." and that Andy confronted Barney that both of them were on the county payroll. We also know that Mayor Stoner indicated that he also serves in some sort of supervisory role over the Sheriff's Department. It would stand to reason then that the Mayor had some sort of authority over the whole county if only to supervise the Sheriff's Department beyond the city limit. I saw Mayor Stoner on The Golden Girls this morning. He sure was a long way from Mayberry. He brought the three gals a huge pig. Well, at least he wasn't dealing with a loaded goat or a wild bear. I'm reminded of a story J.R.R. Tolkien once related about how, during his childhood, he was writing a story, and his mother told him it was acceptable to say "a great green dragon" but it was incorrect to say "a green great dragon." Looks like I agree with most of us Mayberry citizens as to our favorite mayor. While Mayor Stoner's furious "Barney!" was priceless in the shoplifting episode, I think Mayor Pike was hilarious. It took a little bit of courage to portray a small town mayor like that at that timewishy-washy, totally uncommitted to anything other that taking the safe route with the voters. He could change course in the blink of an eye. I spent ten years as a political cartoonist, and Mayor Pike was always in the back of my mind, making me laugh. Still does, every time I see him on our show. Wish I could see all of you who are going to Mayberry Days, and maybe next year I will make it. Things seem to be getting better with the economy, and a friend of mine has a nickel with the buffalo facing the wrong way that he is will to sell cheap! This could be BIG! thanks for the replies concerning Dick Elliot and Frances Bavier sharing scenes. Oddly the mystery goes on. First up: King of Mayberry:maybe Frances & Dick shared a scene with the photo of Andy as a baby but did they exchange dialogue and in the "cell" episode were they techinically sharing a scene or wasnt she behind him or before him and still they didnt speak to one another/ King youre right Frances probably forgot at her advanced age in 1971 but also she was right, they didnt exchange dialogue..Same goes for cutting the tree. did they speak to each other or merely share a scene apart from one another. The King and Frances are both right. Finally:Yes how odd that Dick Elliots most treasured rememberance as an actor on film was the classic Its A Wonderful Life 1946 as he sat on the porch? I saw him in far more impressive speaking roles like today Witness To Murder as a landlord to Barbara Stanwyck or Little Miss Broadway with Shirley Temple or in an Our Gang short of as Clancy in the latter day Bowery Boys series or on tv in I Love Lucy and Superman .In any event what a dear sweet man im hearing from the few who wrote me about him in his pre Mayor Pike days.The same applies to Parley Baer as Mayor Stoner but he had nearly 10 years on Ozzie& Harriet in a running role.They dont make great character actors as they did from TAGS days do they folks? Remenber what Herbie Faye Hope Summer and Vince Barnett told me that i told you kind gentle folks some time ago, Andy Griffith was a caring thoughtful man who looked after the character actors .Andy had a hand and rightly so in selecting the major and bit parts. I too am a great fan of Mayor Pike. His rolly polly physique and great personality make him a very lovable character. And he is so good to his daughter all the time. I always thought he and Aunt Bee would have made a great match. Much better than she and Fred Goss. But then Mayor Pike had a wife as we well know from when Andy talked about her singing without knowing the mayor was underneath the hot towel in the barber chair. Yes, Tom, Aunt Bee did share a scene with Mayor Pike in "Crime Free Mayberry". That's when she was showing everyone in Mayor Pike's office the picture of Andy as an infant in his "birthday" suit. She comments, "I'll never get him to pose like that again." So Frances Bavier just forgot about that scene, I guess. They also share a scene in "Andy Saves Barney's Morale" when Barney arrests the whole town while Andy is in Centerville. Mayor Pike is charged with a 439, while Aunt Bee is charged with a 421. Sure look forward to Mayberry Days. I sure hope Mr. Schwamp doesn't get too rowdy at Col. Tim's Talent Time on Sat. night. He just needs to stay away from Big Maude 10-4. In just about every scene he's in, the tie is tied sloppily with the narrow back part hanging lower than the front part. I wonder if this was the writers' idea, or if Parley Baer came up with it. I think it's a good touch. Mayor Stoner is usually so fussy and mean that his inability to properly tie a tie gives him a bit more humanity and makes him even slightly endearing (in a crotchety sort of way). Once again, Tom's recollections are priceless. If he wrote a book I would buy it. And Welford the camera nut's remembrances of his own little Mayberry were thoroughly enjoyable. Makes me wish I could visit there. I knew Southern towns like that way back when. As to Mayberry's mayors, I loved both if them. Great but totally different personalities. But I have a favorite---Mayor Pike. He was not corruptible. I don't think anyone would have considered bribing him, but he was completely wishy-washy in the funniest way. During the summer I finished off my oil painting of Floyd's Barber Shop, and had to decide which mayor I wanted to use. I decided on Pike. I could hear him stammering around as I painted him and that helped catch his likeness. folks this is much better than the national elections we got going now, is it not? And to add to this, to make us Mayberrians feel much prouder. We have a space shuttle launch coming up, today Launch is set for Atlantis for an hour and 40 minutes away, and folks we are go for launch. Folks I think we need to remember all the nice things this man has done for us. A while back, when poor Frank Myer's house fell into disrepair. You know that if Paul Mulik wrote it, it most be factual, If Kenneth Anderson wrote it, its probably touching, if Dapper Dan wrote it, its probably funny, if the Untrained Voice wrote it..its full of typo's , (and so many more) but you can go back and see what we said. 2) For the new kids, just get under there (the Digest Archives) and take a think. Put in a subject and see what all has been written about it. Whether its ring tones, or Hawthorne Village, or recipes...you can find it all in the Digest Archives. 3) You students out there working on a paper. Here is where you can do your research.
