Phone call with Malcolm Tucker
I never could understand why Malcolm Tucker could not make a phone call. Certainly, the entire town of Mayberry was not on one single party line. All Andy would have had to do was to take Mr. Tucker to someone else's house to make the call. If this scenario is right, it would mean that anytime someone in Mayberry was using their phone, no one else in town could make a call. I think I will put a bucket on my head and give this a good think. Report: WBMUTBB 5000th Digest Online/On-phone Chapter Meeting
Hey Folks, The WBMUTBB Online chapter meeting held on January 1, 2011 and in attendance by phone were Bob Bravetti, Tom Rusk, Joe Gritton, Ron Blankenship, Mike Peacock, Vicki Pillow, and me. We had several others in the chat room talking with us and they included Albert Acevedo, Harriet"Chicken Thief" Browder, Doc Harvey, and several others that I didn't write down their names. I'm putting the audio of the meeting on line so any of you can go and listen to the entire thing. You can find it on the WBMUTBB page at TalkShoe.com. http://www.talkshoe.com/talkshoe/web/tscmd/tc/73308 It was a long meeting but we went into a lot of history of the WBMUTBB Chapter going back to the very beginning with Bob Bravetti and myself. We discussed some things that had been a part of the Digest that impacted our lives in a positive way. Over the 20 years that we've been together in our little corner of Mayberry that have really touched the lives of the member of our online community. We also mentioned the "sleep pants" and the moulage that occurred around that discussion. Then there was the "who's bank book was it" that Opie found moulage, the spelling of Mr. Schwamp's name (Schwump vs. Schwamp), who played "Mr. Schwamp", Johnny Coons vs. Tom Jacobs (http://www.mayberry.info/history/index.php?title=Tom_Jacobs), and others. We discussed the fact that the way the WBMUTBB Digest is delivered, one a day or so, it causes us to keep things 'easy and slow' in our conversation. I did edit it down a bit to try and make it fun for all and to try and make it flow well. I didn't have to do too much so I think those that were there will enjoy this record of our meeting and I hope those that weren't there will enjoy listening. Reminder: WBMUTBB 5000th Digest Online/On-phone Chapter Meeting
Hey folks, Our "trouble check" on Thursday night went well and we had about 9 of us in our 'test-it-out' meeting so things are ready for Saturday night at 8pm. Thursday was fun so I expect us to have a blast on Saturday! One of our members did have trouble getting the sound to play through their computer but nobody else reported any issues. The easiest way to be a part of the meeting is to phone in using the information below. A few things to note: * You can phone in and also use your computer to connect to the chat room. * You do NOT have to be a member of "TalkShoe.com" in order to be in the chat room. (If you are a member, you can associate your TalkShoe userid with your telephone number and show up in the chat room as one person rather than two.) * You can use "Skype" only if you pay Skype for their "Skype-out" feature. (You may have a hard time getting TalkShoe to take the Call ID but keep trying and it will eventually work. * Only one person tried the Facebook app and they couldn't seem to get it to work, so be warned. The meeting starts at 8PM but you can "join the call" 15 minutes early if you'd like, just to be sure you have the hang of things. Phoning in is VERY easy so don't be afraid to give it a try. I hope to see...err...hear you on Saturday! --Allan == Scheduled Time == Date: Sat, January 1, 2011 Time: 08:00 PM EST (You'll have to figure out what time that is for you.) == How to participate == ** Call in: ** 1) Dial: (724) 444-7444 2) For Call ID Enter: 73308 followed by the # sign 3) For PIN - Enter: 1 followed by the # sign or your PIN (if you're a Talkshoe member) OR ** Join from your computer: ** - Click (or copy and paste) the link below to join the call or just listen along - http://www.talkshoe.com/talkshoe/web/tscmd/tc/73308 (Optional) Become a TalkShoe member by going to: http://www.talkshoe.com Facebook user? Cell Phone Cameras and You Tube in Mayberry
While out Christmas shopping this week I noticed all the people taking videos with their cell phones. Got me to thinking how lucky the people of Mayberry were that they didn't have phone cameras and You Tube. Can you just imagine what would be floating all over the internet back then. People would have seen Otis riding a cow down Main Street, Goober's girlfriend hanging her head out the car window like a dog, Ernest T. breaking windows, Charlene Darling ogling the pretty sheriff, Why someone might have even videoed Barney giving away Aunt Bee's cucumbers. They might even have gotten Aunt Bee and the church ladies all gassed and someone might have caught Andy taking a snookered Deputy Fife up his porch steps. And poor Helen and Thelma Lou would really have been upset if Skippy or Daphne would have filmed their shenanigans in the courthouse with Barney and Opie. Oh to be sure, the good folks of Mayberry are mighty lucky they lived in days before all these elctronal marvels. Kenneth G. Phone Conference
I'll step in a day late here to echo the words of my fellow attendees of the 5000th digest anniversary phone conference. Not only did it go smoothly, but Allan's video feed was an extra nice touch. Allan also did a great job moderating it all. It was nice to hear about other members as we did a brief bio about ourselves. Although the 8 or so callers seemed to work well, I'm wondering how well it would work if we had 25 callers on at the same time. One way to find out, so I hope we do this again and have a great turnout. -Bob ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/

Family visit phone/letter
>>>Aunt Bee had to write Aunt Nora to visit remember? Then at the ends conclusion she uses the phone to call her. Why didn't she call Uncle Ollie and Aunt Nora by phone before?<<< My guess would be that it was long distance, and at that time long distance telephone calls were pretty expensive. (Of course, I don't have to tell you that, Tom, considering all the long distance calls you made to actors over the years!) Consequently, most people didn't make them very often. Letter writing was much more common in the '60's. However, in the epilogue, it wasn't Bee who initiated the call but Nora. Andy and Aunt Bee were sitting on the porch when the phone rang and Bee answered it. The phone call at the end worked so much better in terms of the story. It gave Bee the opportunity to proffer another invitation for a week-long visit during the holidays while we see Andy's immediate unfavorable reaction as he is listening on the porch. So it was used as a plot device and was a great way to end the show. Thelma Lou (Janet) ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/

I can remember my Mom telling about when she was phone operator before I was born. I remember when everybody that was on our line phone rang in our house, it was a different ring for each person so you knew when to pick up. Andy's phone
The year was 1940 ,in Chicago Ill.we had a real Sarah, although we did not really know her name, we had a candlestick phone and a square black box on the wall which had a coin slot in it. When we wanted to make a call,we would pick up the ear piece and the voice would say " operator, number please". we would then tell her the number we were trying to call , and the the operator would say "please deposit five cents",and then we would put a nickel or a slug into the coin slot on the box. She could tell by the sound of the ding ,how much was deposited. The slugs were nickel size and were purchased from the phone company. Once a month a man from the phone company would come to our house,he would have a very large ring of keys, may be a hundred. he would unlock the black box and empty the contents on our table and then proceed to count and wrap the coins in rolls,he was amazingly adept at it. When he was finished counting and rolling ,we would buy back the slugs from him and leave them on top of the black box so that you would have them handy for the next call. Our phone number was 0452 and later changed to "Armatige 0452". We also had a party line as privet lines were scarce and more expensive. Every time I see Andy's office phone the memories jump up so clear...But what is strange is that I can hardly remember what I had for breakfast today. Mayberry Phone Book
I was wondering if any trained noticers had ever discussed the Mayberry phone book. Early in the episode where Goober assembles the car in the Courthouse, Andy can't find anyone to stay in the Courthouse while he's out of town and Goober asks him who he's going to get. Andy says he doesn't know but will look in the phone book (as he pulls the phone book from the drawer). Wellsince that, I can't keep my eyes off that phone book!! It seems to appear in alot of the season 5 episodes I'm watching now. It's always either next to the phone or under it. It's a small booklet, which would be pretty authentic for a community the size of Mayberry, and even looks a bit dog-eared. Small town phone operators--Aunt Bee beat me to it
Aunt Bee of Orlando was right. In many small towns the switchboard was located in the operator's home. Not much traffic at night, and she could handle it in her "night things." In fact, at one time I worked for the company that provided phone service in Mt. Airy. I got to talking with one of our senior business managers one day. It seems he had been with the company since he was in the eighth grade. His mother had been the operator in one of our smallest exchanges. The switchboard was in her home, and when she was sleeping, he was the substitute operator. (Truth be told, he probably "spelled" her before that, but couldn't get paid for it until he was 14.) So, if any of you happen to be reading or posting to this list in your jammies or with curlers in your hair, just think that Sarah might have been doing a similar thing back in Mayberry. ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://mail.wbmutbb.com/mailman/listinfo/wbmutbb_wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
Small town phone operators
To get a good look at how someone, who was perhaps much like Sarah, handled subject job, see the film "Raggedy Man," a quiet production starring Cissy Spacek. This is not one for the children due to the attempted rape but is fairly decent in its presentation and is a meaningful story.
