Our life here in Eau Claire, WI, continues to follow the stay at home
recommendations and social distancing. So, it has been a very quiet summer
thus far with no parades or car shows at all. There are a few being held,
but being my age, I am not taking any chances, so we are passing them up.
I miss seeing all our car show friends and we really miss the fun of
parades, but one must do what one must do.

I am happy to announce that our city of Eau Claire has just been named the
3rd best small city in America in which to live. I can certainly attest to
that.

I have only put 10 miles on the squad car thus far this summer and even
less with our convertible. I had a new stereo put in the squad car as well
as a nice fan system to keep us cool, but now I don't use either. But
hopefully, by fall, we will be able to do a few things safely.

I do continue to write my monthly column for seven publications around
Wisconsin, and I try to write about Mayberry and TAGS every other month.
It gives me something to do and I get a lot of nice feedback.

I hope everyone is staying safe. Fortunately nothing ever changes in
Mayberry and we can continue to visit our friends there whenever we choose.

Yes, David Burch, it was nice to meet you and your wife at the Comic-Con
event. I wish we would have had more time to visit. Over the years I have
been able to meet quite a few of the Digest members as they travel through
Wisconsin. Some were able to come to our house for a nice visit and others
were able to meet for lunch. So if any others every come near Eau Claire,
WI, please let me know.

Next Sunday we will be taking part at the Warrens Wisconsin Cranberry
Festival. Tens of thousands of people come to the little village of about
350 for the two-day event. We will once again be participating in their
parade and also interacting with visitors for several hours before the
parade.

First, it's great to get the Digest every day again (thanks, Allan) - and
it's great to see everybody is well and contributing interesting facts,
questions, and TAGS tidbits. I never noticed the top file drawer thing
before, and, as a native New Yorker, never noticed Aunt Bee's "bad"
southern accent in the early episodes - interesting stuff. These are the
kinds of things that make the Digest fun to read.

I also never heard of a "County Mayor" - I learn something new every day!

Here is an interesting bit of TAGS-related trivia that may be well known,
but at least not by me. As a "baby boomer" who grew up with the soundtrack
of 60's music, I saw this on a MeTV trivia quiz a couple weeks ago and
thought it was pretty cool: two very popular albums of the time (Simon &
Garfunkel's "Sounds of Silence", and the Rolling Stones' "High Tide and
Green Grass") both had their cover photos shot at none other that Myers
Lake (a/k/a Upper Franklin Reservoir) - as Andy would say: "Well, whaddya
know about that"!

( This ) I did our 59th summer event at a Sturgeon Festival parade today
and had a great time. A little boy joined me at my table while I was
eating and he talked up a storm telling me how he wanted to be a policeman
some day. He was 7 years old. I showed him my handcuffs and talked about
the police and then told him that I had been a teacher and we talked about
school. Then his mother took some pictures and said he had to go. He gave
me a hug and said, "I wish you were my dad." Must be a dad missing in his
life. How sad.

( That ) Now for a funny bit. I was watching a Mayberry RFD episode and
Sam Jones came into Emmett's fix it shop. He handed Emmett his appliance
and said, "It quit popping". Well, I could tell from where I was sitting
what was wrong with it. It was a toaster. It's not suppose to do any
popping.

First on the middle name subject, Paul said:

"Dudley J Wash ? I don't recall any middle initial ever given for Dud"

While reading this I had the episode on TVland during their marathon and
they are showing the "The Darlings are Coming" when Briscoe first tells Andy
why they are in town, to meet Charlene's beloved Private First Class Dudley
A. Walsh coming in on the bus. I rewoud the DVR to listen to it again to
confirm it, so his middle initial IS mentioned and it is A not J. Also
to answer Ken about the PA system, try using bigger wires.

Dud tells Mr. Darling that he went looking for Ernest T., but talked to his
cousin (whom we never see) because he couldn't find him. This cousin could have
written the note that accompanied the rock. There's no proof that Ernest T.
wrote the note himself.

Floyd's is definitely open on Mondays. Barney is in the habit of getting his
hair cut every third Monday. Many years ago, a Mayberry Days trivia question
was "when does Barney usually get his hair cut?" and the answer given was "the
third. Monday of every month." WRONG! Every third Monday is not the same thing
as the third Monday of every month.

Now, regarding a color episode being shown in black and white. Stations have
been known to do this for decades, because they have long known that the black
and white episodes are more popular, and that some viewers will immediately
change channels the instant they see a color episode of TAGS. We used to have a
member here (Craig N., I think his name was) who was an employee of WGN in
Chicago, and he confirmed this.

I remember a few days ago we were discussing the bookcase in the sheriff's

I know at the end of the series there was no glass on the bookcase. Also, why
on earth has there not been Mayberry RFD on dvd? It would be so great to have

 1. Was Thelma Lou's last name ever mentioned on the show? Sure it was
Jerry. Thelma Lou's last name was Whitfield. And her husband's name was
Gerald Whitfield.

2. Warm and fuzzy moments on Andy. This is probably the easiest question
ever. The whole show was nothing but warm and fuzzy moments. That is why
everyone loves TAGS. From the very first show when Opie won't let Aunt Bea
leave because he does not know who will take care of her, to the very last show
when the whole town turns out to sing the Italian national anthem, there was
noting but scores and scores of warm and fuzzy moments.

3. I was watching the episode "Opie's Newspaper" today when everyone was out
in Andy's garage. There was an automobile tire standing against the wall of
Andy's garage. Where did that tire come from? Andy did not own a car at that
time. It was a few years before Aunt Bea bought her car. And it could not
have come from the squad car. A tire from the squad car would be government
property, and Andy would be breaking the law by keeping it in his garage. I
worked for the federal government for 25 years, and I know how they feel about
taking government property home and storing it in your garage.

I was disappointed that Ellie, Sam, and Warren didn't "Return to

I was glad that Barney and Warren met on one episode.
Does anyone agree that the black and white episodes are funnier
than the color ones? Probably
because of the absence of Knotts.
   Speaking of Barney, I don't
think he met Howard, unless they interacted

Dear Friends -

I have a few odds and ends to share w/ everyone...

First, Happy Thanksgiving to all in Mayberry!!

I wanted to tell everyone that I have been on a little vaca w/ a friend of
mine. We went to the Outer Banks of North Carolina and visited a few sites
there. Of course, both of us being TAGS fans, we went to Manteo to look around
and we visited the theater where they perform the Lost Colony play each summer.
This is where our own beloved Andy got his professional acting start
(according to the theater and internet stories)! It is also close to where
Andy lives currently. It was an awesome trip and we had a great time. It is a
lovely area and I can see why Andy would fall in love w/ the area and want to
live there! We also went to the Wright Bros. memorial in Kill Devil Hills,
Bodie's Island (pronounced body's, not bow-dees) and Currituck lighthouses, NC
Aquarium on Roanoke Island, and the Elizabethan Gardens (also on Roanoke
Island). I highly recommend a stay in the Outer Banks area - there are many
fun things to do - if you go during the season (late spring/summer/early fall)
you can also go on a dolphin watch and go to see the wild horses. HEY, there's
also a YMCA nearby, but we splurged and stayed in a hotel instead of getting
the corner room at the Y. ; )

I missed out on answering the questions before, so I will answer them now...

As to which character I would be, I think that's a hard one, but maybe Miss
Ellie, except I wouldn't disappear from Mayberry - I would stay and enjoy life
in that small but wonderful town!

And what crime would I do that would get me an arrest? H - another
difficult one - I would probably get in trouble for jaywalking (or maybe
playing bingo). I doubt I would get in trouble for partaking in Col. Harvey's
elixir, but you never really know, do you??? ; )

OK - that's it for now...I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving - we're
having our official family dinner tomorrow, so I'm still looking forward to our
dinner, but today was a nice day and I hope all my Mayberry friends had a great
day, too!

On TAGS, I think the writers used overalls as a shortcut to say to the viewers
"Hey everyone, this person is a farmer". When you only have 30 minutes, you
have to learn to do shortcuts. Kinda like when someone comes out on the stage
with floppy shoes, and a big red nose, we know immediately that person is
supposed to be a clown or a funny person.

On the subject of making money, down here in middle America during the 50's and
60's, a kid could make all the money he wanted to make. He could make as much
as a grown man all summer long. There were great number of crops needing to be
harvested. With so many crops, the farmers were not picky about the age of the
workers as long as the boy was big and strong. I started at the age of 12
making a man's wage ($1.00 an hour). There was cotton to be hoed, hay to be
hauled, broomcorn to be cut, cotton to be picked, pecans to be gathered. Many
times, children were taken out of school to work in the harvest. And don't
worry about children getting independently wealthy, because their parents took
95% or more of their wages. Different reasons were given for the confiscation
(buying school clothes, saving for college, etc), but the results were the
same, children were not allowed to have large sums of money. Sadly, now a days
machines do all of the harvesting and children are deprived of the joy of
working and learning the value of a dollar. Some of my happiest days on earth
were spent in the harvest fields with my friends.

I was watching TVLand this weekend, and in The Fun Girls Daphne calls Andy

I think the episode Prisoner of Love only had seven characters if I remember
correctly. Andy, Barney, Aunt Bee, Otis, the prisoner, and the two guards
who brought her in. And the entire episode was in the courthouse except for
a short scene on the porch when Andy went home.

Our pastor this morning told about how she worked in a shelter in Washington
DC for abused women. She told how another worker there and former victim
named Sally decided to put together boxes of nice perfumes, hand creams, and
other special female doodads ( my words, not hers) and they were given to
the women when they came to the shelter. She believed it would help the
women regain their self esteem because all people need nice things to help
them feel better about themselves. I immediately thought about Ellie's box
that she took to Frankie Flint.

Selfish Giraffes, A Calendar For Celebratin', and a little of this and that

2008-01-09 Thread Dennis Ernest

Hello Mayberrians.been a while since I contributed to your well being.
Read with interest every day but have less time than ever it seems to compose a
thought or two. But since my signature has been "Boy Giraffes Are
Selfish." I couldn't hold back. I don't want to be negative Allan, but
having the DVDs shows the network is a real clip joint! But its not just the
cable network. We're lucky to have our local CBS affiliate run TAGS every
morning (M-F) at 5:00am, (a great way to start the day), but alas they don't
show the epiloge and there a few other clips taken here and there from those
shows too. Boy Those TV Guys are Selfish!!

On a happier note, like a number of you, I have a copy of the 2008 TAGS
calendar. There sure are a lot of holidays noted on there. Take a look. Its
an amazing array of special days noted. I wonder if the Morrison Sisters had a
hand in that. Sure would sell a lot of their special recipie..not for
drinkin'...just for celebratin'!

Over the New Years Holidays I watched a marathon of The Honeymooners on CW11
WPIX in New York. (I get it way out here in Nebraska on my Dish TV), but
anyway, a couple of people most TAGS fans would recognize showed up. The man
who played Roger Cortney on the Esquire Club episode, and the man who was the
photographer from "Intercontinental News" ---Joe Layton? (something like that)
from the Crime Free Mayberry episode. Anyway, those two appeared a time or two
in the Honeymooners. (a bit younger I might add). The funny thing to me was
the Roger character appeared in an episode also centered around the lodge that
Ralph Cramden belonged to.the Racoon Club. I think it was called. I
had a good many laughs.

And one more note, we have a new boss where I work and he wanted to make better
use of the bulletin board in the break room for official staff notices. It had
become cluttered with jokes, cartoons, thank you cards, and coupons from the
Sunday paper. I couldn't help but think about "The New Deputy Episode" and
official verifications and all. I had to explain all about "who's been messin'
up the bulletin board". We had a good laugh. He's more of a Simpsons man than
TAGS, but I'll have him converted before long.
Its good to laugh, its good to be from Mayberry. Good to talk to ya-- tell
your mother

This and That

2006-11-20 Thread bcq145
Greetings From the Dime Store,

First to my friend John Masters, may I ask if you specifically have a special
piece that you ordered all the
way from New York City for me and the girls to sing? Not that me and Lydia and
Viola Slatt are particularly
good singers, but we'll give it all we got. You know we will. Between Barney
and the Untrained Voice, Mrs.
Poltice's time is all taken up, but maybe Hazel could work us in for a couple
of practice sessions.

Now, Dixon, about those family pictures. I meant on a regular basis that
family pictures were not shown
on the walls or featured in any kind of prominent place where viewers could
easily see them each
week. Yeah, for a special show, every now and then, a series might pull out a
photograph. But it's not the
usual thing. Not then and not now. The only exception that I recall is that
show which starred the Olsen
twins (and for the life of me I cannot think of its title just now) but I do
remember seeing photographs of
the kids on the mantle or somewhere else in the living room. But the last show
of "Leave It To Beaver" was
entitled, "The Family Album" and it gave the series a chance to feature a
flash-back.

Anyway, Thanksgiving is almost here and if I don't have a chance to tell you
all, I've been here for a number of years. I love you all and I thank Allan
for the good work he does in keeping us all together.
You all have a safe and joyous holiday with your real family and our family
here in Mayberry, which is almost
just as precious to me, will be here for us, as always. Isn't that wonderful?

from, Laura Lee Hobbs and the girls (and Mr. Schwump) over at the Dime Store

Even Ben Weaver serves as a bad example.

You know, I started being the Flora tribute artist only so I could hang
out with my brother who does "Wally." But as I watched the Flora
episodes so I could get out outfit right, I noticed some things about
her that I have to admire. She was an old-fashioned girl caught in the
women's movement of the 60's. Of course, this is not done heavy-handed
in Mayberry. We just see her being one of few women who wore slacks,
and she takes a job traditionally associated with men at the gas
station. I have to admire that. But she does it to help Goober. And
when she succeeds at the job to the point Goober might loose his job,
she steps down when Andy helps her see what is happening. I have to
admire that too. There is an innocent sweetness as well as a desire to
to things right that make Flora a character I would aspire to be more
like. Like Jenny said, there is a lot to admire in almost all the
characters. I just wanted to put in a good word for Flora.

"Flora"

Briscoe Darling inspired me not to yell "BREAD" and "TATERS" at the table.

About Lori Heine's question...

Does anybody else have something about a TAGS character that especially helps
inspire them to be a better person?

Other than the obvious fact that EVERY character has some wonderful trait that
I'd love to have... I think the main thing that really inspires me is the
"feel" of Mayberry. I try very hard to live a life that is slower-paced than
what is considered to be normal. That's the thing that I love about
Mayberry... the slow pace, the feel of the town, the honesty... it's all very
inspiring!

I do try to be a very honest and nothing-to-hide type of person, like Andy.
There are so many characteristics about him, and about the others on the show,
that I couldn't even begin to list! But, I think his honesty and level-headed
way of dealing with people is admirable.
