[wdvltalk] Re : OT Stopping Spam - mulling everything over - long

2004-05-16 Thread Elisa Butler
Hello dear group,

Hope you've all had a wonderful weekend.

Andrew, thanks for that tip on suspending mail delivery. That would
be a great solution! It's always such a hassle when I come back and
try to figure out "where I left of with my subscriptions".

David, I have been thinking quite a bit about that javascript you've
got there. It's very intriguing.

I've been mulling over all of your responses concerning the "Stopping
Spam" and the changing of emails for quite a few days.

The problem : you are all right.

Andrea, excellent post. Back in the olden days, they were called
telephone numbers and snail mail! ;-)

Peter, excellent post. That really got me thinking. A
girlfriend from high school actually found me by using my first name
combined with my domain name 7 years later.
I know that's not business, but I was thrilled to have her
come with her husband to visit France and stay with me.

It was a freak accident, but that really got me thinking about your situation.

I just have to say again "MailWasher". I can't see any solution for you besides that.
Keep your email, don't let the spammers kill your business.

However, I am not going to change my email. I am just going to change
my ISP email. I am [EMAIL PROTECTED] (my main email alias). My ISP email is
[EMAIL PROTECTED] I'm going to change the latter to something like
"my daughter's name or my guinea pig's name @wanadoo.fr "

I know it's not the best solution, but I can at least get rid of 50%
of this trash for this summer so I can maybe only have 60 spams a day
instead of 160!

Now, here is my plan :

1) change my current wanadoo email to something different

2) change my GoDaddy email contact info, hoping that the new email
doesn't mess up everything.

3) Given that Amanda was so kind to point out that the whois database is there for all
to behold,
start considering a Plan 2*, and/or coughing up another $9 per year
for the privacy thing?

4) Go march in Washington DC while I'm on vacation, carry a sign
saying "no more spam". Learn how to lobby on behalf of us all?

* can I use one of those weird yahoo or hotmail accounts as a serious
contact for my host?

Well, thanks for letting me rant and throw ideas at you.

Happy Sunday,

Elisa

P.S. I counted my spams this weekend, I had over 300 and I downloaded
2. It's getting ugly.

[wdvltalk] Re: OT: Stopping Spam

2004-05-13 Thread ANDREA STREIGHT
Again, there remains the danger that when you "opt out"
to unsubscribe, you will identify your email address
as active, valid, and **responsive**, which you don't
want to do. You'll vastly multiply your spam.

I'm going to very soon kill one or two email accounts.
I don't care who I lose in the process. My prospects
and clients use email to contact me, but I have deleted
suspicious emails, then the client phones me, and I
apologize.

I am not a high volume business, so my case may be
exceptional compared to many of you. But regardless, in
business we must compromise and just do the best we can.

Jakob Nielsen has stated that he believes email is a
broken application that is doomed. He may be correct.

I refuse to be overly dependent on email, and I even
disabled all Instant Messaging for security reasons.

I figure if someone wants to reach me bad enough, they
will not stop at email. Filters sometimes delete legit
emails. What then? Why, we just tolerate it and move on.

I don't want to do business with someone who stops at
email to contact me. That's lazy, IMHO. If someone goes
the extra mile and phones or land mails me, that's a HOT
prospect, my favorite kind. This happened last night.

Don't mean to be defensive, and some of you cannot abide
by my personal stance on this issue, but consider: why
isn't your prospect list up-to-date? Why do you not have
multiple contact methods (phone, 800, land address, fax)
for prospects and clients and suppliers?

My warning: do not become overly dependent on email.

Email may, like Nielsen predicts, be ruined beyond all
value, by the spammers and malicious code perpetrators.

Act now to develop alternate methods for contact.

I send out a land mail print out newsletter to my clients
with usability tips and techniques. I do not send email
newsletters. They could get filtered out or ignored. While
land mail actually gets better attention, and archiving.
I gotta get rid of archived email. It's piling up too much.
I will print out and save hard copies of important emails.

Just my personal thoughts on the matter.

The US law is very new. I don't know if there have been any prosecutions
yet. There has been at best 1 high profit prosecution in California under

I don it law if is two nib but I've head stories that there are companies
that follow the letter of the law-removing you from their Marl list. Then
turning around and selling-of lo this as a "verified" email address.

I've had the some email address that is publicly available and have no
intention of changing it in put for the same reason you mentioned. I got
tons of spam but I use filters to keep manageable.

Sure, I accept that - but how do you square that with the new legislation in
US that says an opt out must be provided? I can identify about 50% of my
spam as coming form US based list owners. I thought I'd read that a
prosecution was under way of at least one company for sending spam and not
abiding by the new laws. Not a lot of point if the suits on Capitol Hill
pass laws and don't ensure they are enforced. Here in UK we've had several
prosecutions and one jailing so far for breaching our laws.

That's all very well - but my email address is in the possession of hundreds
of legitimate clients and potential clients, suppliers and potential
suppliers, (I run three different businesses from here) it would be
commercial suicide for me to kill it off. I can notify a large number of
companies I deal with regularly, but I doubt I have a 100% accurate list of
everyone I should tell if I change my email.

Just yesterday I got an email from someone I hadn't heard from for about
three years - no way I'd have been able to tell him as he's moved to another
employer recently and wants me to do some work for them. Could be worth up
to £10,000 for me ($15k) so you see why I am reluctant to change!

Dear Joseph,

Thanks for taking the time to email me.

to all.

SP> I know the spammers are getting cleverer (or updating their technology

I think that Amanda's last email may have helped me solve a bit of the
problem.

This is very true. I get a lot of emails with names that aren't even
mine. (Another topic to be read and discussed : how do emails that
are not properly addressed arrive in your mailbox?)

SP> I know if I had a list that bought from me I would guard it better than the

I know about those. They are very hard to manage.

I have wanadoo.fr, which is my French ISP. And I don't use that
email. I have my domain, butler-online.com, which is hosted at GoDaddy...for the
moment.
I use aliases.

Now that Amanda seems to have figured out my problem, which is really
fantastic, I just need to find a solution.

Unfortunately, it may just be changing my "basic" email every 3 months
to get rid of the spam demons, or paying to sign up with GoDaddy's "private
whois", either way, it just not fair.

All my best,

Elisa

P.S. I asked you about the TSL because, in general, most erudite
people always seem to know a lot about teaching English. That's all

I suppose that doesn't cover the whois, duh me.

I've been so used to using this first class outfit, WebStorage. They
always had private whois listings. I guess I got spoiled by them.

I was so used to using the [EMAIL PROTECTED] as admin and reg with WebStorage. I
don't know why I've got that wanadoo.fr at GoDaddy as my account security
listing.

I'm going to check into this private whois listing option at GoDaddy.

Thanks again for the heads' up Amanda.

All my best, Elisa

Dear David,

Yes, I caught that, but given that I won't be using it again, I
thought I'd just throw it in there!

I did think twice about writing it "out loud" in public for
the first time, but what the heck! ;-)

50 million people already have it!

Question : if the archive of these posts is ok for spammers, why have
I never once received a spam to wdvl@(nospam*)butler-online.com?

I never got one for daisy@(nospam*)butler-online.com (I use that for my guinea
pig forum, the name of my guinea pig).

(* I just added that now because you've got me worried about my good
luck at not being spammed at those emails! ;-)

I have about 20 different emails, one each per forum. I did this on
purpose about 7 years ago. This way, I can track who sent the spam. If I ever got a
spam to daisy, I know exactly where it came from. Never a one.

If I get a spam from the epicurious.com forum, I would know that it
came from there. CNN@, Amazon@, etc... wdvl...

However, the very first time I have ever written my wanadoo.fr address
ever was tonight. The first time in 7 years. Never in a letter,
never in an email, never in a post, never in a forum. Not even spoken
on the telephone.

Like I said, go figure! ;-)))

Off I go to change my wanadoo.fr email to something new. Oh, also, I think that I
will call
wanadoo tomorrow to let them know that if I get one single spam with
my new wanadoo email, I will know where it came from!

I also have to change my stuff on GoDaddy, I'll let them know too.

Cheers,

Elisa
