RE: [wdvltalk] Site review - and grammar

2006-10-28 Thread Cheryl D Wise
Nope, Visual Studio is for developers. Expression Web is for designers.
Microsoft tends to see things in the "corporate" environment where people
work I teams. Expression Web is for the layout and design, to use the
asp.net code behind pages created in VS (like with Dreamweaver you cannot
create code behind pages in Expression even though there is support for
ASP.NET controls. Microsoft is entering the design tool market to compete
with Dreamweaver.

For those working on intranets, etc. SharePoint is the design tool there.
You can't use Expression to work on SharePoint sites which I consider a
bonus.

The next version of Word will allow you to take basically clean XHTML out
for blog posts, etc. If you use the new document format you can also the
content as pure xml.

FrontPage is terminal. There will be no new version. Expression Web which is
the tool replacing it has several options for bringing in Word docs with
varying degrees of formatting. It has a spellchecker but not a grammar
checker. Get the public beta and try for yourself.

I typically use Microsoft Word's built-in spelling and grammar checkers.
Not that I am so grammatically challenged (them what ran the schoolhouse
learned me how to talk correct), but some little "glitches" may escape
the eyeball test.

The only problem is that dropping text into Word adds a lot of "garbage"
when you cut and paste it into web parts or other HTML editors. Would
be nice if the upcoming tool that is to be the next generation of
FrontPage has spelling and grammar checking. Of course, I'm sure
Microsoft will find a way to add junk to your code using that tool as
well.

I assume Ross, you have read that great little book by Lynne Truss
entitled "Eats Shoots and Leaves"? Covers punctuation and grammar in
depth but is easily read and very amusing.

The title (for those that don't know it) comes from the story of the
Panda that walked into a bar, ordered a drink, downed it, took out a
pistol and fired three shots into the air before turning around and
starting to walk out of the bar.

The barman said "Hey - who the hell are you doing that?"

The Panda replied - "I'm a Panda."

"What's a Panda?" asked the bartender.

"Look it up in your dictionary" replied the Panda.

The barman duly did and there was the entry - "Panda - a large
bear-like creature native of China that eats, shoots, and leaves"

Just in case anyone is puzzled - and I've come across a few that are
when confronted with that - of course it should have read -

"Panda - a large bear-like creature native of China that eats shoots
and leaves"

Punctuation makes all the difference!

Have a good weekend folks!
