Re: [wdvltalk] issues with email coming back that I did not send

I am getting quite a few of these too. AVG tells me they all have viruses.
It is just another device of the nasty creatures that are trying either to
get your email address for their lists, or trying to lure you into giving
private (financial) information, or maybe take over your machine.

I think your best bet is to ignore it, hit delete, and empty your virus
vault or its equivalent every now and again. The only stuff I bother to
block or blacklist now is the porn, since most of that seems to have an edge
of sadism (er... I might need to rephrase that!).

What I do notice is that almost no address is safe from spamming. Even
where you may not release it the spammers seem to take a guess at
combinations that are likely. One I get now and again has a cc list of
names that may or may not be real all in the JH initial range.

>From the various discussions I don't think there is much you can do. The
originators can completely hide their address I understand.

Spamcop may or may not help; the FBI in the US, Scotland Yard here and the
international police might slowly bring these characters to book, but there
are always others slipping in and out of the shadows.

It's the downside of cheap, easy communication from one side of the globe to
the other.

These returned emails are coming more and more frequently, and I'm getting
very concerned. What can I do about them? How can I tell if there's a
vulnerability on my machine? I have the headers in most cases, is there
someone I can complain to? Shouldn't I be able to determine the host where
they really originate from so I can file a complaint?

Very true!!
I recall way back in the early 1980s when the first PCs appeared and
software for them was not plentiful, someone (who shall be nameless)
telling me: "If you write a program for the PC and place a small advert for
it in the pages of Byte Magazine, (circulation was huge both sides of the
pond) even if is riddled with bugs, you'll have 100k responses within a
couple of weeks. Charge $10 a time for your offering CWO and you then cut
and run as a rich man before anyone realises it isn't that good a product!"

Yes, a small percentage of a large base can be very profitable. (Sometimes
wish I'd followed the advice - but at least I can live with my conscience!!)

Well, no one has anything to retaliate to, though that may shortly change.
Is there a way to check if my machine is being used as a zombie?

It may be spammers retaliating...or your system could
be a zombie that actually is sending out these emails,
unbeknownst to you, as a background program installed
by an intruder.

Why do the spammers send email to billions rather than
the 4% who respond?

First, the 4% of billions represents immense, vast,
easy, fast wealth for spammers. 4% response if this is
the actual figure, and I think it is, is amazingly
huge response, good for direct mail, telemarketing,
etc.

4% sounds small. It's not small. I'll take 4% of a
trillion dollars (USD) any day of the week.

Spammers don't know who that 4% is going to be, like
with all direct response marketing. So they *have* to
send email to all billion addresses.

Plus, it costs them the same to send to 10 people as
it does to send to 10 billion people, as far as I can
ascertain. Someone might know more about this,
bandwidth considerations, whatever. I'm not a mass
email marketer, though I am conducting an email survey
right now as we speak, non-commercial, research only.

I read somewhere that 60% of all e-mail sent is spam! Imagine the
difference is cost (not to mention aggravation) if there was no spam
e-mail!!

I believe it's over 80% now.
I have learnt that the 'medical' name for Levitra is 'tadalafil'. I think
that's a splendid name, like the 'ta-da' noise that Windows used to make
when it booted, as if a successful boot was a big deal. Into the bathroom,
grab my braille-imprinted pack, get a tab down my neck and 'ta-da'.

2005-02-08 Thread Dwayne Conyers
Unfortunately, this is a common problem -- spammers use the e-mail addy or
domain of some person rather than a fictitious one.

Typically, this happens when you report spam to their ISP or via SpamCop and
they find out and do this in retaliation.

Interesting note: I read that of the billions of spam that flood the net, only
4% reap results in the form of some person purchasing what was being sold.

I wonder why not just mail those four-percenters rather than bombard those of

retaliate against reporting them?

Well... anyway... off my soap box.
