Re: Installing Tools and Framework is a mess

2012-07-18 Thread Jeremy Matthews
Hi...turnkey installer guy here...

Did this for a while...got tired of competing with WOClipse, Manual installs,
etc...felt it was confusing newcomers to have multiple installation methods.
When you are new, you don't know which one is best, and I felt it was not
helping the platform.

That being said, creating a turnkey installer isn't hard. It just takes time.
If someone wants to take up the chalice let me know. We'll toss it up on
github.
But, keep in mind that some of the bonuses of the turnkey installer cannot be
included, such as frontbase, due to the agreement between Frontbase, myself,
and another developer, whoc shall remain nameless.

Thanks,
jeremy

Re: Windows hiding themselves in the background

Unless there are any objections or other thoughts, I'm killing the
publicly-available Turnkey Installer.

I keep receiving messages/questions about using turnkey VS eclipse native VS
goclipse...and I really think having multiple options will do more harm than
good - and will ultimately confuse new users with too many choices (hence the
emails I keep getting...). Without a clear path and guidance, I believe it will
only degrade the overall experience for new users.

There is a valid 10.6-happy installer...if people still want it it can be
released, but I don't think its wise to advertise it at this point.

I will still be lurking...there are some other things we've wanted to do to

Re: Golipse.app

2010-10-10 Thread Jeremy Matthews
Ah - cool.

There are some things I like about this, and somethings which I would consider
changing (IMHO).

Pros
- Always Up-to-date (which is really, mostly, always)...much nicer than have
a script on a server continuously generate packages
- Simplicity (big for me)

Cons
- Need to be online during installation (some folks download packages and then
run, or are not constantly connected)
- Not a typical installation package (which, as an IT guy, drives me just a
little crazy)
- No continuous feedback (though probably easily solved if using cocoa API's
like NSURL), like with a simple progress bar

Questions
- Is connectivity checked before attempting the download?
- Is the download file md5 hash checked before download?
- Are there alternate links in case the primary download URLs fail?
- Is there a Cancel button?
- Are we using API's such as NSURL, or running NSTask?

In the past, I create packages (using packagemaker) which contained a new
feature (Package References) - so the package would download components
remotely during the install process. We found this confused the users and
frustrated support staff. I thought it was cool, and basically the
future...since we're rapidly heading to a space where everything is connected,
always. I suppose we're not quite there yet since every client and business,
save a few enterprise groups, that told me to change it back).

I'm really interested in what everyone else thinks hereshould we shelve the
turnkey in favor of something like this?
Not wanting to devote time to spend on yet another installation solution...we
already have a few now, and I think we need to choose one (maybe two) which
will be the future newbie installerneed to get rid of the confusion there.

Thanks,
jeremy

That's the more secure way...

So...I've managed a few macs in my day, and created custom imageslots of IT
work.

Generally speaking, you don't let business users run as admins. Not that they
CANT do admin things (with an admin account ID and password), just that
they're not an admin off the bat.
More secure. Slightly more work.

For SOHO's or individualswell, different story.
Some of those folks don't understand why there is a need for a second
accountor what this mysterious thing called root is...so its less stress
just to tell them to be careful and not do silly things (which sometimes works).

So...before I go tromping about and creating a half-dozen different installers

Are we all pretty much working in Cocoa/x86_64 land nowadays?
Is there a reason to have a carbon-based, turnkey installer (or cocoa-32)?

The folks on this list are fantastic, but I don't view them as my personal
resource for every single WO question out there, and the ones I had (or have)
tend to be the same ones that those before me had as well. The community is
small...GREAT, but small. So when I have a tough question (which happens), it
seems like the same few folks are answering. It makes me leery for the future -
if Chuck and Kieran get hit by a bus, I would be going to the nearest bar and
running a very large tab!

Re: All In One Installer broken

2009-12-07 Thread Jeremy Matthews
Tim,

- Sounds as if the text needs to be changed - tell me where it sounds like I am
on permanent sabbatical.

- When everyone decides on the future of the WO web portals, I'll happily
comply where I can to the group mentality.

- That being said, there ARE parts (maybe just one part...have to recheck) of
the installer which cannot be shared with the group - I will ask the party
responsible since we had an agreement on not sharing information related to
those components. Let's just say it was a very nice benefit of the installer.
Yeah.

- So...if I made everything public then we'd have to consider forking the
package...I'll have to see what can be done there. I'm still considering the
future of the installer, and how it would ideally work given the multiple
versions that have been requested. Otherwise, say hello to half-a-dozen jumbled
installers. Not me fav idea.

- What this boils down to - when I ask for feedback, I'm serious there. I get
little to no information except when things don't work. There should be a wish
list somewhere...somehow. Then I could focus on priority features.

Thanks,
jeremy

I do think the organizational observations are good ones - making

I like Kieran's idea of putting the code for (whatever) installers under

I'm not sure what the issue is, since we test it routinely, and this is the
first time we've heard in MONTHS that there was a problem. And now there's talk
of abandoning it entirely - within an hour.
Nice.

So, seems everyone wants to talk AROUND me and not TO me, let me make a few
things clear:
1) I regularly test and maintain the installer.
2) Whenever we hear there is an issue we FIX it. Usually pretty damn fast. Ask
around.
3) I do not build WO Apps _ROUTINTELY_ anymore - this does not mean I care less

That error log file is full of missing required bundle messages.

Anyway, just FYI, I don't have time for troubleshooting this now
I am doing my usual 3.4.2 download and install/setup the manual way.

Since Jeremy is not working in WO anymore and this is AIO (All In One)
installer is clearly broken for install on a virgin OS X Snow Leopard
box, we might want to just discontinue the all-in-one installer and
just go write a concise WebObjects Developer Quick Start Guide for
newbies ...so I started a wiki page on this and will work on
completing it as I get time. Any thoughts on that? Should I wipe all
references on the wiki to the AIO?

If we are ever going to get new devs to come to WebObjects, we need to
have a working quick start. Any dev worth his salt should be
comfortable on the command line, so maybe a bash install script that
downloads and installs various bits and configures everything might be
the better route. Any opinions on that?

BTW, I went to use the WOInstaller.jar initially and thinking that a
newbie would want standard install paths, I set the WOInstaller.jar
target as /, but got an error saying System directory already
exists. Should the WOInstaller.jar's CPIO class be changed to just
overwrite existing files? Does that overlay directory paths (aka
merge eith existing files if named differently, or does it realyl
replace existing directories (ie., wiping them out)?

Anyway, this is just some meandering thoughts / discussion before I
leave off the How would a newbie WO dev fare on getting started for
now and go do some work.

Regards, Kieran

Re: Snow Leopard and WebObjects

2009-11-17 Thread Jeremy Matthews
So, there is a turnkey installer for development (which just happens to include
the launchd items, some optional frontbase stuff, wolips + eclipse, wonder
stuff).
But...there isn't a thing for deployment...was working on it a while ago and
dropped it since it sounded like someone else was going to run with it.

So, whenever I hear the same questions on the list over and over, especially
those which require multiple steps...its usually time to give the group a
faster way of doing so.
Hence, the idea of a deployment installation package.

- WO
- launchd for wotaskd+ javamonitor
- wonder's apache config

I can probably put that together in a few days and start testing...in fact the
only component I do not have already in my own package is the wonder config
file

That being said, I won't spend time on it if nobody will use it.

What did the installer do on Leopard?

I don't personally have any of that installed (no frameworks, no
monitor/wotaskd/adaptor) on SL[1] so whatever is needed to make things work
after install is the 'anything else' you're looking for :-).

 I wonder if it's worth aiming at downloading/installing fully-embedded
 wotaskd/monitor?

[1] I'm using modproxy instead, with each app on a specific port for
development the apache setup is quite easy. No wotask/adaptor/monitor here.

Stable Installer Update - Now Working with 10.5.8 and 10.6.1

2009-09-17 Thread Jeremy Matthews
FYI - the new package has been successfully tested on both 10.5.8 and
10.6.1 systems. Please report any additional Issues.

###

Note: Updates to the turnkey installer are happening much more
frequently now as our semi-automated build system is in place. Updates
are not set on a predetermined basis, but will be released according
to frequency of core wolips updates. Additionally, _only_ the core
items are now installed by default. You will have to customize your
installation to get the Wonder/FrontBase items. DO NOT SELECT THE
MANIFEST ITEM, OR THE INSTALL WILL FAIL (working on that one).

Along with the new stable version of WOLips (3.4.5830), a new mac

following items:

Eclipse 3.4.2 (Ganymede)
WOLips 3.4.5830 (new stable)

Stable Installer Update (5713)

2009-04-07 Thread Jeremy Matthews
Note: Updates to the turnkey installer are happening much more
frequently now as our semi-automated build system is in place. Updates
are not set on a predetermined basis, but will be released according
to frequency of core wolips updates.

Note: The ~/Library/Application Support/WOLips/wolips.properties file
will be automatically generated during the installation process (last
item); if the file already exists it will not be overwritten. YOU WILL
RECEIVE AN ERROR ABOUT A POSTSCRIPT INSTALLATION FAILURE - IGNORE IT!
(We are working on migrating this...)

Along with the new stable version of WOLips (3.4.5713), a new mac
turnkey installer is available (Leopard required), and consists of the
following items:

Eclipse 3.4.2 (Ganymede)
WOLips 3.4.5713 (new stable)

Re: Wonder tutorial, part 1

I think the issue probably is that the new installer is ready, which
includes the necessary revisions of wolips/eclipse/wonder for the 5.4
branch stuff...but not yet posted.

I'll ask Mike and post the updated version later if that is the case...

Thanks,

With some time off I've decided to get my feet wet with WO. I'm as
new to WO and Java as it gets. :-)

I started with the All-In-One installer from:

  http://wiki.objectstyle.org/confluence/display/WOL/Installing
+WOLips

Half way through the WebObjects, WOLips and Wonder tutorial, part 1
I'm getting the following error:

  java.lang.RuntimeException: computeQueryDictionaryInContext failed.
  ERXWOForm.java 228 _appendHiddenFieldsToResponse er.extensions
  ERXWOForm.java 256 appendChildrenToResponse er.extensions
  ERXWOForm.java 396 appendToResponse er.extensions
  ...

After Googling around a bit it seems I need to install Wonder 5.4. I
found Wonder 5.4 Frameworks and Wonder 5.4 Applications at
http://webobjects.mdimension.com/wonder/.

If I copy Wonder 5.4 Frameworks to /Library/Frameworks I get tons of
errors throughout my project.

Instead if I copy Wonder 5.4 Applications to /Library/Frameworks the
original error persists.

I've rolled back to WOLips 3.3.5594, and Eclipse 3.3.2. And I'm back
to the original error.

Any ideas?

Thank you,
  Sanford

Re: WOLips Installer

2008-06-26 Thread Jeremy Matthews

+1

...

Most folks using the installers are either new or inexperienced...or
lazy, like me, and want things to more or less just work.

Introducing these instabilities can be a _huge_ turn-off to
(potential) developerswhen we were mucking with that idea we had
quite a bit of negative feedback from people just trying out the
platform.

If anything, offer two installers or two separate installation
routines: 1 for stable and 1 for beta.

What part?

So far, Apple legal has been pretty clear about redistributing certain elements
of WebObjectsand since I maintain the OS X Installer...I'm REALLY

Thanks,

I have created an installer that will install WOLips, WebObjects
5.3.3, and eclipse for a user on Windows or Linux, Code for OS X is
included in the installer. However, I have not enabled it, as OS X is
the easiest environment to setup WebObjects on, and there is an
existing native installer available on the WIKI.

I need testers for the installation on Windows and Unix. Please
contact me directly if you would like to participate in the test. The
prerequisites for installing is that Java 1.5 be installed on the
client machine before running the installation.

Re: Leaving WebObjects...think biz

2008-04-10 Thread Jeremy Matthews
I am not WO Developer, per se...more of a tinkerer and Middleware,
techie and biz guy. Hence the installer.

However, when I do work with clients of biz that want a web app
developed, we usually quote out to different firms for WO, .Net, LAMP,
RoR, and the list goes on

Quite frankly, we just ask about their preferences (if any), and
usually make the business case based on the amount of resources and
different timelines the project would require. We usually don't even
get into the technology unless they want to maintain their own stuff
and code. We offer options for each package.

Most usually lean towards the best combination of cheapest/fastest/
highest quality (which is usually WO), unless they discover that it
is WebObjects and they are a total fear-based MS Shop. Usually,
management is making the decisions and we just show the projected
costs, and time, and required resources based on each different
offering. We then say You could go MS/.Net, but it will cost an extra
30% and take longer to develop, with higher maintenance costs...your
choice. While this is not ALWAYS the case, you'd be surprised how
often it is...

So, we make the biz case and give options...they make the decision.

Also...when they ask about the underlying tech (.Net, LAMP, RoR, PHP,
WO, etc), and it is a WO-based app, we usually say Java. Now, they
always get full disclosure, but that is what WO really is...Java.

I am aware that there has been some uncertainty about WO...but you can
get support, you can find developers, and the tools are probably the
best they've ever been, are under contract to being developed, etc.
What WO lacks is marketing and damn good documentation. I think the
direction of WO is finally clear.

WOLips Community Installer

2008-03-14 Thread Jeremy Matthews

To all WebObjects/Eclipse/WOLips users

The WOLips community installer has (finally) been declared Gold Master!

The package (as in mac-based) installer includes the following
components:

- Eclipse 3.3.2
- WOLips (stable rev)
- JavaEOGenerator
- EOGenerator Templates
- Launchd scripts to autolaunch wotaskd and JavaMonitor upon boot
- Wonder Frameworks (as in pure frameworks)
- Wonder Framework Jars (in case you prefer the embedded kind...)
- Wonder api docs
- Wonder RuleModeler
- jadlipse
- Standalone Entity Modeler
- Frontbase Database + JDBC adaptor + Management Apps + Autostart
- Uninstaller

This Package requires:
 - Around 350MB disk space
- 10.5.2+
- Xcode 3.0+ Developer Tools

You can download it at:

http://sisuworks.com/files/WOLips.zip (faster but fewer links available)
OR
http://homepage.mac.com/WebObjects/FileSharing.woa/wa/WOLips.zip.zip?a=downloadFileuser=jeremymatthewspath=.Public/WOLips.zip
 (slower but more links available)

Please send any bugs or enhancement requests my way(I wouldn't be
surprised if 10.5 Packagemaker snuck something in there...)

jeremy

Here are the permissions on the plist files on my machine

-rwxrwxr-x 1 root wheel 795 Oct 31 17:40 com.apple.wotaskd.plist

As you can see, they both seem to have too broad permissions.

Also, I noticed that the name of the plist file differs from the

com.webobjects.womonitor.

Other than that, works great.

Re: WOLips Installer Beta

2007-12-20 Thread Jeremy Matthews

I am, for one, blaming packagemaker!

If anyone else is using Packagemakerbe VERY careful with
permissions (in the 10.5 version of packagemaker)it *occasionally*
forgets them or applies them incorrectly.

...which is fantastic for production-level installations :)

We're working on some manual fixes to the permissions stacks, adding
in the wonder libraries, plugging in the new nightly wolips builds,
and upgrading the newest Eclipse 3.3.2 stream built (dec 17) in the
next installer revision. Please let me know if you'd to see anything
else included in the futurelike, perhaps, a full tomcat servlet
installation?

Thanks,
jeremy

Many thanks for packaging this up.

I've noticed the following problem after installation, apparently,
the womonitor and wotaskd processes are not automatically started
(after a reboot).

I tried launching them manually and got this error message:

--- cut
launchctl: Dubious permissions on file (skipping): /Library/
LaunchDaemons/com.apple.womonitor.plist

nothing found to load
--- cut

Here are the permissions on the plist files on my machine

-rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 573 Nov 30 17:13
at.obdev.littlesnitchd.plist

-rwxrwxr-x 1 root wheel 810 Oct 31 17:40 com.apple.womonitor.plist
-rwxrwxr-x 1 root wheel 795 Oct 31 17:40 com.apple.wotaskd.plist

As you can see, they both seem to have too broad permissions.

Also, I noticed that the name of the plist file differs from the
label within it: e.g. com.apple.womonitor vs.
com.webobjects.womonitor.

Other than that, works great.

Eclipse Vs. Xcode...but not really?

So I get that Eclipse is where things are going for WO
developmentbut I have a few clients who operate in managed
environments...so I need to give them a list of reasons of having
either Xcode or Eclipse (there is this odd 1-limit IDE for their
environment due to some past craziness...). Since things are slowing
down for them, it would be a good time to consider migration.

I've heard of some opints, but I've been stuck in another land for
the past few months

Does anyone have a list of the pros/cons of both Xcode and Eclipse
for WO development, for either technical reasons or anything else
that can think of?
Please include missing/broken functionality, bugs with the current
versions of either.anything you can think of that makes life
difficult or wonderful!

P.S. - I'd omit the fact that Xcode 2.x is the end of the road for WO
tools in XcodeI've made that VERY clear. Leopard will support
them, but thats the end of the road...

Eclipsing Xcode?

2006-08-22 Thread Jeremy Matthews
Since the WO dev tools are now deprecated, and since Apple advises not to
develop WO apps with them, is there any point in using Apple Development tools
to build WO apps? I'm not a big eclipse/wolips fan, but I suppose I don't have
too many choices now, eh?

And, WO (Deployment) is not included on the new intel-based Xserve alongside
Tomcat/JBoss Services. I know that Apple uses WO to run just about everything
we seeso its definitely confusing.

I love WO...but there haven't been any clear declarations about the product for
some time, so all I have to go on are Apple's actions regarding WO.

Thoughts?

more popup fun

2005-11-28 Thread Jeremy Matthews
For some reason, my popup (list populated by a db fetch) now querys AND
displays correctly, but selecting the value in the popup still produces null
when submitting the object for insertion. The text fields are fine, so the
method is probably sound. I'm assuming my wopopup bindings are somehow
incorrect. Here are the current bindings:

displayString:testTypeEnumerator.testType
item: testTypeEnumerator
list: testList
noSelectionString: Select A Test...
selection: newTestsEntry.testType

displayString: is showing correct attribute
item: not sure why I need the enumerator, but its there
list: working, since the attributes are displayed correctly from the db fetch
noSelectionString: not really important, but there
selection: not sure if this is working...this is the important binding that
takes the selected value, no?

Entity is caled Tests
attributes are: testType, testScore, testGrade, testName
new entry is called newEntry

jeremy

newbie q: multiple fields insertion?

2005-11-24 Thread Jeremy Matthews
Following this example is easy:public WOComponent createBlogEntryAction()    { EOEditingContext ec = session().defaultEditingContext(); EOEnterpriseObject newEntry = EOUtilities.createAndInsertInstance(ec, "BlogEntry"); newEntry.takeValueForKey(title, "title");        newEntry.takeValueForKey(body, "body"); newTitle = newBody = null; ec.saveChanges(); return null;		    }However, I don't want to create a dozen single keys in WOBuilder, and I'd rather create a key that references the Entity, so I can easily drag its attributes to the correct fields. So, I created a new key "newEntry" and made it of type "BlogEntry" (which is the entity that includes title and body), instead of a bunch of independent strings. This creation showed a key with references to all the attributes in that entity. However, I'm a bit confused as to how to replace these lines:newEntry.takeValueForKey(title, "title");newEntry.takeValueForKey(body, "body");Since it no longer works, as those references now point to:newEntry.titlenewEntry.bodyI've tried replacing title for newEntry.title (and the body attribute as well), but it doesn't work. What does? Thanks, jeremy

Re: Deploying to servlet and database settings

2005-11-22 Thread Jeremy Matthews

Kad, David and I built a patch-quilt guide for Tomcat:

http://www.sisuworks.com/page3/files/WebObjects%20Tomcat%20MySQL.rtf

And I have a Tomcat installer as well:
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/27151

NOTE: If you install this product on OS X Server...well, it could
override who knows what. If you install on OS X, make sure you don't
have any other apps that install Tomcat-related stuff.

popup selection not inserting value

2005-11-22 Thread Jeremy Matthews
Seems simple, doesn't it?I've reconstructed the fetch and syntax in EOM and reflected changes in code and in WOB; now the fetch values populate the array (popup) correctly, and shows values in the popup correctly. Now, a new entry gets inserted correctly (all text fields), excepting the value chosen from the popup list. It gets set to null. So, I need to figure out why the selected popup value is not set correctly, even if a value is chosen. It always goes to null. Since I'm populating the popup from a fetch, do I need to write a takeValueForKey statement?WOD:displayString:       		testTypeEnumerator.testTypeitem: testTypeEnumeratorlist:	testListnoSelectionString: "Choose one!"selection: newTestsEntry.testTypeCode:public WOComponent addTest()    { EOEditingContext ec = session().defaultEditingContext(); ec.insertObject(newTestsEntry); System.out.println("Saving new Test" + newTestsEntry); ec.saveChanges(); newTestsEntry = new Tests();        return context().page();    }Thanks, jeremy

conditional link

2005-11-14 Thread Jeremy Matthews
I want to have an WOimage that, when clicked, will offer the option
of inserting an object (revealing a conditional input field).

I'd like to offer this ability within the same page using a
WOConditional; meaning when a user clicks on the button, it reveals a
section where you can insert an object (string in this case).

Since my conditional-based knowledge is a bit weak, I can do this by
sending the user to another page, but I'd rather not. How can I keep
them in the same page?

Ideas?

Thanks,
jeremy

tomcat and mysql

2005-10-28 Thread Jeremy Matthews
Anyone out there able to successfully hook up a database (MySQL would
be nice) under Tomcat 5.5.x (maybe even 5.x.x) ?

If so, let me know how. The app works fine unless deployed under
Tomcat, and then it logs this:

- Waiting for requests...
Saving new Course{values = {courseDescription = lkj;
courseSemester = lkj; courseName = lkj; courseTeacher =
lkj; courseDate = lkj; coursePeriod = lkj; teacherfid =
com.webobjects.foundation.NSKeyValueCoding$Null; }; this =
Courses 33d742 EOTemporaryGlobalID: 0 0 10 0 1 2 0 0 -64 61
1 0 0 0 1 7 52 -83 -67 -49 -103 29 78 -69; }
- An exception occurred while trying to open a channel:
com.webobjects.jdbcadaptor.JDBCAdaptorException: Cannot create
JDBC driver of class '' for connect URL 'null'

So, Tomcat won't play nice with MySQL. Anyone who knows how to get
these kids together...well, let me know. Specific instructions would
help, since Apache's and MySQL's don't seem to be working...

Any info here will be added to our Tomcat 5.5.12 distribution
installer for mac...I'm sure others would appreciate it!

Re: still the dreaded connection dictionary error...

2005-10-27 Thread Jeremy Matthews
Well, we've gotten it to the point where database interaction works
fine in all methods except under Tomcat. Direct Connect, other
containers, WO deployments all seem to work fine. I'd really like to
nail this down so I can include it in future Tomcat installer releases!

FYI, everything under tomcat has rwx permissions for everyonein
case someone thinks it may be a permissions deal.

connection dictionary error?

2005-10-26 Thread Jeremy Matthews
When attempting to insert values into the database, I receive this WO error:

java.lang.IllegalStateException: _obtainOpenChannel --
com.webobjects.eoaccess.EODatabaseContext [EMAIL PROTECTED]: failed to open
database channel. Check your connection dictionary, and ensure your database is
correctly configured.

I've tested the DB, and connection, and they are fine. It's just that WO
doesn't like them. I can generate SQL from EOM as well.

I've heard of the index.eomodeld file being corrupted, and that it may not
have entries, or those entries may need to be rewritten. Right now this file is
99% blank, so I'm thinking this may be it.

I'd appreciate any advice or the text of what is supposed to be included in
that file.

Thanks,
jeremy
