2012-05-30 Thread Pádraig Brady
Hi,

I'm a long time Fedora user, recent Red Hat employee,
and GNU coreutils co-maintainer.

I'd like to help out with the fedora websites as I've
wished many times I could tweak things here and there.

Attached is my first tweak to indicate USB as an install option.

I realise this may mess up translations.
In this case the older translations could be used until updated.
Will I update the po files so in the same patch and
mark that translation as fuzzy to incite updates in future,
though I suppose I'd have to do that at transifex?

cheers,
Pádraig.

Subject: [PATCH] mention USB as a possibilitiy in the install instructions.

The "install instructions" bubble presented to users
on download of an iso image, doesn't mention USB as an option.
USB is the much more common method of installation in my
experience so at least indicate it as an option.

Also update the link to point to the more generic media creation
instructions, one level up, to cater for all types.

2017-08-06 Thread Vedran Miletić
Hi,

I would like to join the Websites Project. I have an understanding of
CSS and HTML sufficient to reuse templates and frameworks such as
Bootstrap, but haven't really designed stuff myself. I'm fluent in both
Markdown and reStructuredText and enjoy editing documents written in
those languages. I'm familiar with how gettext-based localization works.

Today I noticed that getfedora.org is offered in localized version in
addition to the default one in English, and my goal is to provide the
Croatian localization. In the future I would also be interested in
helping with documentation issues like [1].

I already figured out that there is a .po file which I should edit [2]
(kudos for linking to Pagure at the bottom of getfedora.org). I presume
one should submit a pull request after that? Thanks in advance for any
response.

Regards,
Vedran

2018-03-03 Thread James Hawkins
Hello everyone,

My name is James and I'm from Canada. I'm an aspiring web designer and
frontend developer. (Who isn't these days?!?!) I've been building
websites for several years but finally decided I'd like it to become a
full time job so I'm working hard on developing my skills while
working full time in another industry. I'm comfortable with HTML, CSS,
Bootstrap and I like to work with WordPress. I'm currently learning
Javascript and converting from Photoshop to Gimp/Inkscape. I love open
source and I'm trying to use 100% open source tools for my development
work. I love Fedora and I've been using it since Fedora 21. I tend to
bounce between GNOME and Mate editions. I've wanted to contribute in
some way to Fedora for a long time now but since I'm not a software
developer I wasn't really sure what I could do or if I had the skills
needed to contribute. I've done some basic user testing for past
releases.  I'm hoping to grow and learn as a web developer while
contributing in whatever way I can. (Even if it's in a really small
way). I'm new to using Gitbub and some of the other aspects of the
backend stuff (static generators, etc.) so I'm hoping to gain some
knowledge, experience and learn some new skills.

I should also mention I love beer and music.

Looking forward to meeting more members of the websites team.

Introduction

2020-09-06 Thread Zlatko Duric

Hello everyone,

I'm sending a short intro of myself, as stated at the Fedora Project
wiki that I should do.

I'm Zlatko, I use Fedora as my primary OS at my laptop and my desktop
and I have been using it for quite some time so I've thought I could try
to help out the project that is doing so much for me.

I'm an experienced web technologies guy, and lately I have been working
mostly with JavaScript (Angular, React, Vue, and most of the frameworks
before that) and NodeJS. But I was also doing a lot of things on the
servers as well - from Nginx or Apache config, light RDBMS
maintenance/ops work and simmilar so I figured I could try to help in
the websites team here.

I also have been involved in some Java, Python projects, and as a purely
non-production excersize, with C, Go and well, many other languages.

I'm not a sysadmin but I also have experience in this department. You
could probably see some of this info at zlatko.dev site (relatively new
so still sparse) or at my LinkedIn profile (dunno how we go about
linking those but I'm fairly easy to look up for there). I'm currently
an "Lead IT Consultant" at msg systems ag, which doesn't tell you much
but I'm dealing mostly with web frontend work, coaching and architecture
there.

Anyway, my first Fedora was a Fedora Core 3 (or 4, was it?), ans since
then I've been using it on and off along with other OSes. I've also used
Mint, Arch, Ubuntu and other distros, I've dabbled even with FreeBSD.
I've also been using Windows at work, and my wife is on a macOS platform
so I'm also close to that system.

About Fedora 21, I've went back to it on my laptop, and since beginning
of this year, on my desktop machine. I've recently read an article on
Fedora Magazine and wanted to get in and help out where I can.

Now, funny anecdote time: I've signed-up on the Fedora project website
about 10 days ago, after I've read something on Fedora Magazine and
trying something at my computer and noticing an issue I'd like
addressed. But I had a glitch on sign up (couldn't change the temporary
password) and while waiting for that to resolve (and then to have the
time to write this email), I've forgotten what my issue was. So now I
don't know _exactly_ why I've joined, but I'll go look into "easyfix"
issues and see if there's something fun for me to look at and try to
help with.

2021-05-23 Thread Overload Overload
Hi everyone,

I would like to introduce myself to everyone here. I am a software engineer
with almost a decade of experience in web development.
My recent experience has been related to JavaScript and related libraries and
frameworks few key items of which are
1. ReactJs
2. Angular
3. NodeJS
4. MySQL
5. PostgreSQL
6. MongoDB

I have been a fan of Fedora for quite some time now and have been thinking
about contributing in some way, but it was only recently that I learned about
website contribution as an option. It was mostly because of my own mistake that
it took so long to find out about it.
I would like to contribute as much as possible and would really appreciate if
someone wouldn't mind showing me the ropes.

Hello!

I've been following this mailing list for some time already.
I contribute some small changes in Docs when I can.

I'm a biologist but I had completed web dev internship in a small local company
a couple of years ago. For the most part I'm self learned even though I have
studied one web design course in community college equivalent more than a
decade ago.

Not listing any programming languages since I'm not a programmer, but I prefer
Sass and Gulp toolchain as well as Pug (https://pugjs.org) to work on HTML
designs.

Since the FedoraWeb is to be redesigned soon, I would like to know how to get
involved in the redesign work.
Can I chime in on Taiga ?

https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Websites/Join page doesn't tell me much. I will
try to be available in chat.

if there is anything I can do in the meantime or if anyone needs assistance
I am more than happy to help!

+1 for your patch.

Yes it is going to break translations if we just apply it like that.
Few thoughts:
- We don't update POs anymore as it is done through transifex.net now
- We only upload POTs and pull POs.
- When many changes have to be made, we could use a staging instance in order
to provide a new POT and let some times for the translators to
localize, and proofread online.
Then, a merge is fine. This is clearly the best solution, but some
translators won't understand
clearly what they are translating (many resources on transifex.net).
That is what we do
  by the alpha/beta time.
- We could just apply like that, it's not a big change (but need to
notice translators),
  and we have done worst…

If you have any questions, please ask.

Hi Matthew,
did you read our join page [1], following the points step by step?
All of our pages are build with html/css but you should acquire also some
Python skills, because our sites are done with the Genshi framework for
internationalization.
Clone our repo as described here [2] and have a look on our file structure
of the different websites. You will see many "divs" in our sources, so it
will be a good idea to look also at the 960 grid system [3].

Naturally you can immediately start working on tickets, see easyfix [4] to
begin with less difficult issues or go to our Trac [5]. You can send your
patches there in every moment.
Please ask if you have any doubts, here or on the websites IRC channel on
freenode. (#fedora-websites)
You're welcome.

Introduction: L235

2015-09-29 Thread L235 Wikipedia
Hi everyone,

I'm L235. I'm new to the Fedora Project, and I'm excited to be working with
the Website project. I am a Wikipedia editor – see
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:L235 (11000+ edits, see [A] below for
more info) – but other than that, I am basically new to the F/LOSS
community.

I can't say that I'll be especially active here, but I do plan on trying to
contribute. My experience with website development is low, but I will at
least be helping out on the wiki where possible, and maybe a bit of light
non-wiki work.

[A]: Here is my status on Wikipedia and other Wikimedia Foundation projects:

   - Currently 11000+ edits on the English Wikipedia (analysis
   ,
   see also global WMF edits
   ; this puts me
currently at #6250 on the all-time list of Wikipedians by number of edits

   );
   - By far, my most prominent role on the English Wikipedia is that of
Clerk of the Arbitration Committee, which is the highest community body on
the site with the authority to issue binding decisions (see info on the
   Committee
, info on the Clerks of the Committee
   );
   - On the English Wikipedia, I am also a "course online volunteer, file
mover, mass message sender, pending changes reviewer, rollbacker, template
   editor" (see official record

   );
   - Across the Wikimedia Foundation projects, I am also an administrator
   on Wikimania 2015 (see record

)
and an administrator and bureaucrat on Wikimania 2016 (see record

   );
   - I am also a maintainer and administrator of XTools
   , a set of very
commonly-used tools across the Wikimedia projects (see info page
   ).

Thanks,

and I look forward to master my skills and learn more that could help our

getting our repo set up locally if you want to poke around our websites:

http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Websites/ShowUs

Our web apps are a little different; each is its own project. One that I
work on is called Fedora Hubs (it's Python & Flask):

http://pagure.io/fedora-hubs

If you are interested in Django, Hyperkitty is an upstream project we
contribute to and use in Fedora and its front-end is written in Django:

https://gitlab.com/mailman/hyperkitty

Take a look around at the different projects we have, and depending on
which one you want to work on maybe we can help you figure out a project
to work on!

Cheers,
~m

Hi Vedran, and welcome and thank you!

Most translations in Fedora are managed through Zanata. I think in this
case that's
https://fedora.zanata.org/project/view/fedora-web?dswid=-3457
. You can get more information on the Translations list
https://lists.fedoraproject.org/admin/lists/trans.lists.fedoraproject.org/

But someone from the websites team may correct me or clarify if I'm
mistaken and this is out of date knowledge...

Hi Vedran,
Matthew is correct, we don't do localization, we do internationalization,
that means we produce the source files and push them to the translation
platform (Zanata).
Localization is done by the single localization teams and we pull the
translated strings to build the websites.
The .po files you see in our repo are outdated and used mostly just for
testing. Please don't make any changes on them.

If you want to join us, take a look on pagure [1] or follow the
instructions on the wiki [2]. For any doubts please ask, or join us on
#fedora-websites, even if you just want to say hello.

Hi Mua,
thank you for your introduction, I saw your greetings also on IRC, but your
were already gone on IRC. Your skills are great, and you will see you can
easily apply them within the websites team.
We mainly use HTML, CSS and Javascript in our websites, but they are built
with Python and we also use some Python scripts to make things easier to
manage. Also, we use the Genshi framework for Internationalization. To get
startet it would be a good idea taking a look at the bootstrap grid [1],
because there are many divs and classes in our source files and we use it
to make the websites responsive.

Finally, to get started, you need:
* to clone our repo. See [2][3] and join the web FAS group.
* start working on tickets, see easyfix [4] at the beginning or our issues
on pagure [5]. You can send your patches
there or just make Pull Requests, which are much more appreciated.

Please ask if you have any doubts, writing to the websites Mailing List or
on IRC channel #fedora-websites, located on the freenode server.

No problem. The System Administration email list is "Fedora
Infrastructure" , and you can
look over our current 'issues' in our trac
https://fedorahosted.org/fedora-infrastructure/

We are working on how we can better get a match between projects and
people so please look around and then email the list with your
questions..

Hi all,

Mi name is Miguel Sánchez de León Peque, and I'm from Spain.

I'm a student at the *Universidad Politécnica de Madrid*, studying
industrial engineering. I have very short experience in application
programming (C, C++) and even shorter experience in web programming (HTML,
CSS, JavaScript, PHP). The only website I've created since I started

Webpage
.

That's why I'm just offering my services as Spanish translator. Lets see if
I change my mind after a while... ;-)

Introduction of myself

2012-06-26 Thread Robert Mayr

Hi to everyone,
my name is Robert Mayr, alias robyduck [1], and I'm a Fedora user
since the Core 1b release. Before that I used Redhat 7.3, but only
sporadically.
In January 2005 I founded the Italian Fedora community Fedora Online
[2], and just a few months ago we restyled the hole site. We also
pubblished a webzine written in LateX and in 2008 we wrote a small
manual for Fedora newbies, based on Fedora 9.
I'm speaking fluently German and Italian and also know English, so I
could contribute also on the open project of translation, which is
ongoing. My other skills are html, php, mysql, css3.
I'm living near Milan since 2010, before I spent most time of my life
in Bolzano (South Tyrol). I have 2 daughters and the third child (a
son this time!) is coming within the next 3 weeks.
It would be nice to contribute to the website team by maintaining the
major site, but also the various interesting sub-projects.

Cheers

Hi Eko,

tickets, maybe at the beginning the easier ones.
You can find them on the easyfix page [1] or just look in our trac [2].

Great, this will help you to understand a little bit our source files,
but there is nothing very difficult.
We don't use php as CMS based systems, but mainly Python (genshi),
html, css and JS.

Hi Drew,
nice you are interested in helping us.

The best starting point would be our join page [1], where you should
follow the points step by step.
Python skills are welcome, because the sites are build with Html/CSS
and the Genshi framework
for internationalization.
It would be a good idea taking a look at the bootstrap grid [2],
because there are many divs and classes in our
source files.

Finally, to get started, you need:
* to clone our repo. See [3] and join the web FAS group.
* start working on tickets, see easyfix [4] at the beginning or our
Trac [5]. You can send your patches
there.

Please ask if you have any doubts, writing to the websites Mailing
List or on IRC channel #fedora-websites,
located on the freenode server.
