[weewx-user] How important is it to do virtual environments for all installations?

2024-06-17 Thread D R
With my Pi5 having arrived and run in for a week or so and a multitude of
projects now under control, I want to start playing with WeeWx 5 (or 5.1).

I plan on a fresh install on a freshly updated Reap OS installation. I
expect to fiddle with it a lot, and if my past experience is anything, a
few complete re-installs .

I've seen it mentioned that it is important to do all the WeeWx in a
virtual environment. I really don't have anything important on this
computer, have been pretty good at installing according to instructions for
previous versions, and now wonder if it is crucial to do Venv, or just go
ahead as I have? I'm seeing Tom say that Venv is a piece of cake, but
until I figure stuff out (paths especially) I want to cut out anything
which my interfere with learning and configuring.

Am I foolish to not try to master Venv until my final install? Are there
bad actors lurking under every stone which I should be more concerned about?

Thanks. Dale
Oh, is it OK to begin to use 5.1 as a learning and testing program? For
awhile it will be just running the simulator, I think.

Re: [weewx-user] Weather Display and weewx

2024-03-09 Thread D R
I am getting a Campbell Scientific running with major help from a user who
has accomplished that already but am thinking while focused drivers are no
doubt the best interface, I was next going to try using Weather Display to
write the clientrawtext.txt file and the modify Mr Wall 's file parser to
pull in the values to present to weewx. With my skills it is likely to be
late summer Northern hemisphere before anything is working so feel free to
come up with a correct driver. If you do, please share. Dale

[weewx-user] How to copy error messages and other info from the Terminal window in RaspPi400 standard install

2022-07-25 Thread D R

i'm attempting to install and use Mr. Wall's most recent driver for the
Texas Weather WLS-8000 driver.

I downloaded from github, copy and pasted from the readme file the
instructions and pasted them into the Terminal and executed them in
sequence.

When I get to the reconfigure sentence, I get an error message, with the
walk back, when then says another error message is preceeding it.

It has to do with permissions for the weewx.conf file and also something
about shutil.

I attempted to highlight them in the terminal window, did a copy, but the
pasting of the error sequence to this firefox browser window opened to the
Google Groups Weewx-user panel (which I'm typing in right now) does not
paste.

I know this seems dumb but i cannot copy and past either the error in the
terminal window, nor the /var/log/syslog file to show those familiar with
such things what seemed to happen.

Is there some other way to capture that error and send it to this group for
comments and help?
Dale

Re: [weewx-user] Re: After installing Texas Weather driver from Matthew's github no in pick list

2022-04-30 Thread D R
I downloaded the twi.py which you furnished at the above link, and copied
it from the pi/Downloads directory to the /usr/share/weewx/user area and
re-ran the wee_config --reconfigure program, but again only 12 choices were
shown and the TWI was not one of them.

I'm sure it is my error with the trouble I had trying to move the file from
my download directory to the /user area.

I even tried modifying Mathew's install instruction to do so too but it had
a run error so I guess that isn't going to work!

I will try later after I rest my brain a bit, but am I correct in assuming
the procedure to do is to download the twi.py you provided, move it from
the Downloads area into the /usr/share/weewx/user area after removing the
previous twi.py file, and then run the wee_config again, or have I missed a
step?

Thanks and sorry to be gumming up the works here. Dale

[weewx-user] Re: After installing Texas Weather driver from Matthew's github no in pick list

2022-04-30 Thread D R
I did forget to mention that I found twi.py in the /usr/share/weewx/user
directory. It is puzzling to me that there were no other drivers from the
list shown during the wee_configure --reconfigure selection shown here,
unless they are stored elsewhere or 'built in' and not visible, and the
twi.py is added on somehow. Dale

[weewx-user] After installing Texas Weather driver from Matthew's github no in pick list

2022-04-30 Thread D R

I am past testing and now want to connect my Rasp 400 to a real wx station
I have running, a Texas Weather Instruments.

I went to github and got the driver that Matthew has furnished, downloaded
it and installed with the instructions given into my WeeWx 4.8.

Then I did a wee_config --reconfigure and was stepping through the choices
until lI got to the
Installed Drivers choice, and in the 12) shown, there was no mention of the
newly installed TWI driver.

Is there a way of making it show up in some way other than wee_config,?

Thanks for any suggestions. Dale

Re: [weewx-user] Has the latest WeeWx and Python3 changes made the github fileparse.py file not work?

2021-08-15 Thread D R
I am learning about Github, too, and didn't realize such info was posted
and things list updated to Python3 was in those files. I'll know to look
there in the future. Thanks!
No, I'm not having any particular problem. I just printed out the
fileparse code and wanted to study it to try to figure out how things are
done, a learning exercise, to see if I can then go the next step and make
the output of the Weather Display clinetraw.txt or some such file, and then
learn how to take that, extract the data, then format it into a file that
fileparse will read and furnish to WeeWx.

I'm not anywhere as far along as you were thinking when you asked if I was
having a problem! Certainly not with WeeWx, just me learning. Thanks.

[weewx-user] Has the latest WeeWx and Python3 changes made the github fileparse.py file not work?

2021-08-15 Thread D R
I am getting my bearings in the skins and language structure and got one
weather station (rainwise ip100) back working.

While still very shaky with the details of the language, thought I might
exercise my brain by trying to get my Campbell Scientific station feeding
Weather Display to also make the file necessary so that using Fileparse to
read a file so the beautiful graphics of WeeWx can be posted to my web
server, along with having more weather information available than what the
aging RainWise station can provide (like solar, snow depth, etc.)

I see the original file was written in 2014, and that the last modification
(if that is what a commit is) was in October of 2019.

Since then WeeWx has been updated a few times, and Python3 is what I'm
running. I've seen that some comments on other code is that Python3
doesn't always go backward to run old code, so as I study the situation and
try to figure out how fileparse works, and whether or not Weather Display
can be configured to write a file that fileparse will successfully read, it
would be nice to know if that block of code is compatible with the current
WeeWx 4.5.1 and the last python3 distribution package. Has anyone run
fileparse with the latest releases?

Thanks. Dale

[weewx-user] Set up Belchertown for using Dark Sky for the time being for forecast

2021-08-13 Thread D R
Since I'm just getting my station rebuilt and set up, I cannot get an aeris
key or password yet since I"m still running the station emulator and
getting simulated data. Of course with DS on the way out, I will feed
pwsweather and be entitled to get a key, but so far, I'm not online.

I'd like to proceed with getting Belcherweather set up. Pat has apparently
been busy and so far hasn't answered a question I posted on his site.

In the configuration skin for Belcher, there is a section that says 'aeris'
is the forecast source, but says Dark Sky for those with a still
functioning API can be used, but there is no example that I can find as to
what to put into those " " for DarkSky.

Has anyone set this up for DS and know what the entry should be?

Re: [weewx-user] Getting pyephem to generate more extensive values in the Celestial module

2021-08-10 Thread D R
Tom K. Do not spend more time on this, I just did a power down and
restarted Debian and then went through start up with weewxd and it now
works. I know that Linux is supposed to be vastly different from Windows
and 'reboots' not usually needed, but it wasn't working before the restart
but does now. Please use your advising time for someone else, since the
problem seems to have been fixed but I have no understanding of why. I'm
just pleased to have Celestial.inc working! Thank you.

[weewx-user] Getting pyephem to generate more extensive values in the Celestial module

2021-08-10 Thread D R
I've started a new install with a RaspPi4, 64 Gig memory, latest Debian
install, with updates, then latest WeeWx, selected the emulator to get some
reports, then when working went through the install of pyephem, since when
I expanded the Celestial .inc it told me for more info I needed that. I
went to the site to install the pip dev package, then ran
pip3 install ephem and got
Successfully installed ephem-4.0.0.2 message
then ran
python3 -m unittest discover ephem
which game me, eventually, Ran 160 tests in 7.843s
OK, skipped =2.

I then restarted weewx with the
sudo /etc/init.d/weewx stop
sudo /etc/init.d/weewx start

and since I have my ftp turned on my
sudo tail -f /var/log/syslog

gives me streams telling me main Starting up weewx version 4.5.1
with clock correct, wx_binding to database weewx.sdb
then starting main packet loop.

After a period of time, there are cheetah reports of generations and
uploads to the ftp site which do show up.

However, when I try to expand the Celestial area on the left of the screen,
I still get the very basic couple of lines and the message that I need to
install pyephem if I want more detailed informatiion.

There isn't much info in the syslog/log that shows me what's going on and
it is getting longer, but I will be willing to attach that if it is the
right log, or is there a different log that is more helpful in trying to
figure out what I need to do in order to have WeeWx know that ephem is
loaded?

I see that it is referred to as pyephem in some places with internet
searches, and in others ephem, so I may have done something wrong.

In addition, once when I started WeeWx, I got about three lines of 'dummy'
information displayed on the screen about every two seconds, but I don't
see that in the log anywhere, but it seems to be generating the information
to try things out before attaching a real weather station to the program.

If hints are available for me to try, please let me know. If there are
other logs to capture and load, let me know that otherwise I'll be happy to
load /var/log/syslog for inspection.

Dale

[weewx-user] In which directory on the Rasp Pi are the driver files stored?

2021-08-07 Thread D R
I'm starting from scratch with a new Rasp Pi 4, Debian OS, and installed
the newest version of WeeWx with the method that placed the bulk of the
files in the /etc/weewx directory, not the /home one.

I have found the 0.5 release of the Rainwise IP100 driver and ran the
program to add an extention, and found it listed in the weewx.config file
as the driver. I've edited the .config file to include the IP address that
the IP100 is on my system, but get an error when I try to start weewxd.

Before posting more info and asking questions I'm trying to learn more by
exploring the possible errors myself. I want to verify that the IP100
driver did get loaded in the right place, but cannot find it snooping
around in the various bin areas.

Maybe it is elsewhere? Maybe it didn't get loaded as I thought it did. So
to start with, may I ask where I should check to see if all the driver
software got loaded?

[weewx-user] Formatting question: How to force a + in output?

2021-02-21 Thread D R

If the number is negative, it will print a "-" in front of the number.

Despite looking through Python formatting pages from searches for Python
Formatting, I cannot see that there is a provision to force a "+" in
front of a number no matter what.

For example:

-23.7 is always given if negative,

45.2 is given but I'd like +45.2

Is there a formatting character to do this?  I guess a long logical
string to determine if the value is greater than zero, then toggle to
print "+" if true, but that seems more than what I want to waste CPU
cycles.  I was just hoping that some character had been assigned to
force a +.

[weewx-user] How to insert a special symbol in the format and labeling text

2021-02-17 Thread D R
I have made some changes to the current.inc skin generating file and now
want to tweak it just a smidge.

In the current conditions, listing the various values, I used the
($trend) operator to get the difference from 24 hours ago.

I had it in a line at the bottom of the listing of values, but see that
the barometer uses a (...) form to indicate change.  I stuck the
formatting for the temp difference after the current outside temp,
within () and it works. Now I'm feeling brave and would like to add the
capital Greek Delta symbol in front of the value.  I know it may be a
little odd for someone who might casually look at the page, but this is
for me.  I know in Word or Excel you can hold down the Alt key and type
in the value, but I don't know if that is exclusively for Windows
environments or not.

I looked in the skins.conf and also for the default values for the
database element values, but didn't find a delta that I could copy and
paste.

Is it possible to insert this character?  I know some special characters
do show up, like the degree sign in F and C, and wind direction, so the
Cheetah engine must be able to do it.

May I ask for what that might be, or point to an area that explains how
to do such insertions?

Thanks, Dale

[weewx-user] Looking for guidance on how to modify the Current Conditions section of the 'main page' of WeeWx

2021-02-13 Thread D R
I apologize for not having come up with the answer on my own.  I have
gone through the User and Customization guides and am just not finding
clear guidance as to what to do, despite there being a lot of info in
those documents.

What I want to do is add a line to the collection of items in the left
hand "Current Condtions" list.  This section preceeds the "Celestial"
and "High Low" portions of that column, and lies to the left of the
graphs for the day.

From my reading, I assumed that the area I was looking for would be in
the /etc/weewx/skins/Seasons directory, in the 'skins.conf' file.  Yet
as I scan through there I cannot find a series of entries that matches
the fixed output that would then have the data to display and formatting
info right after it.

I've looked at the Standard report, and the skins.conf there, and
haven't found what I'm looking for.

Despite fiddling with this for a couple weeks trying to figure it out on
my own, I'm just not making the connection or am really looking in the
wrong spot.

Where does this section of the home page get formatted and while I think
I know what I want to add so it shows up as the temperature change from
24 hours ago, don't just want to start changing things which would no
doubt give an error if not done carefully.

Can someone give me a hint as to what I'm missing to find the correct file?

[weewx-user] Noting temperature change from yesterday at this hour

2021-01-21 Thread D R
One of the things we get are these rather sudden sweeping in of cold air
masses and the television stations frequently map how much temperature
change there is compared to yesterday at this time.  In the summer, a
welcome cool front is also frequently given air time.

I'm thinking this would be an interesting value to show (perhaps
choosing to show or not in the .conf file.

However, I quickly proved to myself how little I know about going to the
database SQLite and plucking this number from yesterday at the closest
time, and then displaying it like was done with the "Rain Yesterday"
modification that was offered maybe 8 months ago.

Has anyone coded this function, and given it a 'toggle' to choose to
display this, perhaps in the High/Low portion of the home page, or
Current Conditions?

Re: [weewx-user] forcast wunderground for weewx 4.2.x using python 3

2020-11-20 Thread D R
The weewx is 4.2.0  Installed quickly, no errors, and is running in test
mode with the simulator showing what I'd expect. I have downloaded all
the install files within the last two days.

I did an update and upgrade for all things on the Rasp400 before
installing it.

The github location was: https://github.com/matthewwall/weewx-ip100

Yes, and I did try giving it the absolute location as you indicated.
And I tried moving the file to the /weewx directory, but it said I
didn't have permission to do that.  Not knowing Desbian very well, I
just assumed I made a mistake that I couldn't surmount at the time being.

[weewx-user] Most current version of driver for Rainwise ip-100

2020-11-20 Thread D R
I am doing a new setup on a Pi400 for speed and to clean out some things on
a previous Pi4 that I've had running for about 1/3 of a year. I have
downloaded the driver from github, and searched here for comments on the
driver which seems to have had some problems pre version 0.4

Despite having downloaded the github's most recent version, and following
the instructions in the readme file, I run into a file not found error when
I get to the part of doing"
 sudo wee_extension --install weewx-ip100.zip

I see that the file actually downloaded from github is called
weewx-ip100-master.zip but even changing to this name in the command, I
still get a file not found error.

Is there a posting of a correctly named install file, and a readme of the
correct instructions to get the driver installed?

I seem to have run into a wall, and perhaps there is an obvious error I'm
not seeing for having looked to long at the sequence tonight.

Thank you for any tips: Dale

Oh, PS. Is it possible to have two WeeWx installations (on different Rasp
machines) BOTH looking at the ip address of the unit and have correct data
flowing to both Pis? I'd like to not take down the functioning Rasp Pi
until the new install is up, running and tweaked.

Re: [weewx-user] Re: Peet Bros with Davis wind vane

2020-11-19 Thread D R

Indeed, I may have jumped to a wrong conclusion, also.

I should have clarified.  My response was based on getting a whole
sensor unit, windspeed and wind direction, replaced.

If it is just a mechanical problem (broken  nose or fin) on the Peet
wind direction unit, then as Tom suggests a bit of work with epoxy and
re-inforcement mesh works wonders.

I have just finished fixing the nose of my Peet unit that arrived with
the nosepiece broken off and a little of the screw pointing through.
Very easy to do.

I have made numerous repairs to the wind direction vane on the Texas
Weather Instruments sender because it is notoriously weak where the bolt
attaches the vane to the encoder.

Please indicate what you are wanting to replace:  The whole unit with a
Davis, or just the VANE that turns the cap with the magnet inside of it.

[weewx-user] Re: Peet Bros with Davis wind vane

2020-11-19 Thread D R

In those situations where a conversion can be done, rather than a direct
drop in replacement, it usually takes some electronic magic. Davis made a
unit to take an NRS or RM Young wind monitor and simulate it being a Davis
weather sensor package.

A gentleman in Florida did a whole bunch of programing to make a Davis head
look like a Heathkit ID-4001 or 5001, but he did that for a living.

This is going to be tough since I don't know if anyone is privy to the
actual workings of how the Peet Bros figures out the angle from the
pulses. I can see the concept but have no idea how to emulate it.

[weewx-user] Re: Peet Bros with Davis wind vane

2020-11-19 Thread D R
>From my knowledge, the answer is no.

The Davis uses pulses to signal wind speed, and the Peet Bros does, too.

The major difference is that the Davis uses the much more traditional
potentiometer to deliver a voltage and the ISS reads that to convert to a
wind direction.

The Peet Brothers does something much more difficult and very different.
It times when one of the magnets makes or breaks and then depending upon
the time until it pulses again, determines the angle of rotation through
which the wind speed magnet has rotated, simplified explanation.
Therefore, if there is no rotation of the wind speed magnet, there cannot
be a determination of which direction the vane is pointing, unlike a
no-wind condition for a Davis, which of course will give a voltage on the
wind direction sense line.

Very odd, but seems to work for them. If you go to Davis's web site,
there is a better explanation of how they designed their unit. It
certainly gets rid of the potentiometer and it wearing out, but the timing
circuitry to measure the angle has to be a bit more complicated.

[weewx-user] Is there a clientraw driver?

2020-11-14 Thread D R
I have used WD for a long time, and have it monitoring several stations.
The program generates a clientraw and clientrawextra file, as well
discussed here.

My stations can feed only one software program, therefore I cannot run
WeeWx and WD on two computes.

I would like to use WeeWx to generate its various display skins from data
which WD generates.

I see that WeeWx can generate a clientraw type file for use by WDFresh and
WDL, but that is backwards from what I want to do.

I am looking for, but not seen, a driver that allows WeeWx to *read *a
clientraw file produced by WD and loaded into a location on my Rasp Pi (WD
runs on a Windows 10 machine) which WeeWx can then do its magic on to make
the various outputs based on the skin(s) selected.

Is there a driver that does this? Is there a driver that is 'close' and
would require me to produce a bit of code that would do the conversion of
clientraw from WD to a format that WeeWx driver could read?

Thanks,
Dale
