Re: [weewx-user] Setting Vantage Vue archive interval

2024-06-03 Thread Rob Cranfill
Can you tell me the implications of

rob@pi4:~ $ weectl device --set-interval=5
Using configuration file /etc/weewx/weewx.conf
Using driver weewx.drivers.vantage.
Using Vantage driver version 3.6.2 (weewx.drivers.vantage)
Old archive interval is 1 minutes, new one will be 5 minutes.

*Proceeding will change the archive interval as well as erase all old
archive records. Are you sure you want to proceed (y/n)?*

Are these just archived on the console? So if WeeWX was up to date, no
impact on my database?

[weewx-user] Setting Vantage Vue archive interval

2024-06-03 Thread Rob Cranfill
(I've tried searching here for the answer to this; if it's
asked-and-answered, please let me know where.)

It has been pointed out to me that the archive interval of my weather
station, a Vantage Vue, doesn't match my WeeWX config (60 seconds .vs. 300)
and that WeeWX therefore uses the hardware's value, which is rather low
(that is, a fast interval).

Can anyone tell me how to change that on the Vue? I think I have two
options: use WeatherLink, which is kind of not an option for me as the
station is not connected to a Windows machine (it's an RPi); or set the
value "by hand" with a telecom program.

I'm a little fuzzy on that 2nd option. Does that fact that I have a data
logger hooked up enter into things? So I just stop WeeWX and then use some
terminal program to connect to the console then issue a SETPER command?

Thanks for any pointers.

Updated the DB. All looks good now, I think.

Just FYI, on my Pi4 with an SSD and a few years of records, the rebuild
took this long:

Using configuration file /etc/weewx/weewx.conf
All daily summaries will be rebuilt.

That seems to have done it! Thanks :)

One odd thing: I had to copy the old seasons.css and seasons.js files over,
by hand. Whatev.

[weewx-user] HTML perms issue for 5.0

2024-06-01 Thread Rob Cranfill
Hey, all!

Just upgraded to 5.02 from 4.10.something, and now WeeWX can't output to my
web server directory. I'm sure it's some dumb permissions thing I'm
missing, but I am not seeing it.

I get a bazillion errors like this in the log:

Jun 01 12:16:15 pi4 weewxd[3424852]: ERROR weewx.imagegenerator: Unable to
save to file '/var/www/html/weather/daybarometer.png' [Errno 13] Permission
denied: '/var/www/html/weather/daybarometer.png':

My new install is running as user weewx, as intended:
rob@pi4: $ ps aux | grep wee
weewx3424852 4.9 2.8 358576 53528 ?Ssl 11:38 1:42 python3
/usr/share/weewx/weewxd.py /etc/weewx/weewx.conf

I added that user to some groups (for my USB interface and the HTML
directory)
rob@pi4: $ groups weewx
weewx : weewx dialout www-data

And here are the permissions along that directory path. See anything
untowards?
drwxr-xr-x 12 root root 4.0K Dec 7 20:36 /var
drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4.0K Dec 7 20:36 /var/www/
drwxr-xr-x 4 www-data www-data 4.0K Jun 1 10:58 /var/www/html/
drwxrwxr-x 6 www-data www-data 4.0K Jun 1 11:25 /var/www/html/weather/

Thanks for any suggestions. I can post more info if that will help. The
logs show nothing else interesting that I can see.

 /rob

Thanks for looking into this. I'm glad to hear it's not a bug! :-) I can
imagine it's hard to portray the subtleties of a year's worth of data in
one graph. Thanks for all your work!

[weewx-user] Wind direction graph weirdness

2023-12-04 Thread Rob Cranfill
Hi, all! Longtime user, and hoping this isn't too dumb a question.

I have seen the ongoing discussions about the inherent difficulty of
calculating "average wind direction" and am wondering if maybe that issue
is what is causing the weirdness in this long-term graph, like this (taken
from http://robcranfill.net/weather, which you are free to peruse!)

This is my yearly data, and I'm sure the wind does *not* actually blow like
that. I had a friend/user ask me about why the graph looks like this, and I
had no answer, except to say "No, there is nothing preventing my weather
vane from pointing any way the wind blows!" :-)

Thanks for any info,
  rob in seattle

2022-08-19 Thread Rob Cranfill
Aw, man, I'd forgotten about the default 'false' for register_this_station -
I've been off the map for who-knows-how-long. :-(

I guess I still haven't properly figured out how to merge my customizations
when I do an update. My bad.

Re: [weewx-user] Re: Ghost values in logger archive records

2022-05-09 Thread Rob Cranfill
I have installed the new (May 6) driver and my system seems happy enough.
I'm not sure I'm a good test, as I had previously hacked skin.conf to
exclude the non-existent sensors (as opposed to letting the system
self-configure and ignore missing data, right?) and I am loath to put that
back.

But I suppose the next software update (I'm still on WeeWX 4.7, Seasons
4.6) I'll find out just how happy it is.

But I'll bet it's fine. Thanks again for your work!

Tom,

I'm glad to try out the new code, but I'm not sure what you'd like us to do
- push data to Weatherlink again? Or just look for something in the log
files?

I'm seeing the soilLeafAlarms but not leafWet in the LOOP data.

I don't push to Weatherlink or publish online at all, I just use WeeWX
to download the archive data from the logger and produce reports
(particularly NOAA) to keep my own historical records locally. Works great
 for me.

I would like to monitor WeeWX with Nagios, too, but find the referenced
page no longer there ("This site can't be reached"). If this isn't just a
temporary outage, does anyone know where else this code might be found? I
think I found his GitHub page but it's not there, I think.

Re: [weewx-user] Re: sftp on 3.9.2, RPI3B -- **still** not working with several methods

2022-02-20 Thread Rob Cranfill
Funny you should bring this up now. I recently upgraded to WeeWX 2.6, and
my modified code no longer works. I was always able to adapt to each new
version, but the new codebase is quite different than the previous ones. I
have kind of given up on trying to adapt it to 2.6. Sorry.

Instead, I use a cron job to “rsynch” my local files to the remote. It
sounds like maybe you are doing something similar.

If you are using some version of WeeWX less than 2.6 I could still send you
my code. Although even that code requires the pysftp library, so maybe none
of this will help you. :-/

Let me know if you’d like to try it.

I do still see various "soil" and "leaf" values in the REC & LOOP data, but
I'm happy now that I've simply removed the unwanted graphs from the
"plot_groups" entry in Seasons' skin.conf file. (as seen
at http://robcranfill.net/weather/ :-) )

Weird. I was just today (2/16, 8 days after this thread started) dinking

Aha, I see that now in the 'info' output.

After repeated applications of the proper wee_device command,

  wee_device --set-transmitter-type=*N*,10

I now have:
TRANSMITTERS:
  Channel Receive Repeater Type
 1 active noneiss
 2 inactivenone(N/A)
 3 inactivenone(N/A)
 4 inactivenone(N/A)
 5 inactivenone(N/A)
 6 inactivenone(N/A)
 7 inactivenone(N/A)
 8 inactivenone(N/A)

Thanks!

First, I guess I'm just confused as to why I'm getting all this good stuff
when my previous (<4.6) installation was happy for so long.

I just did a quick 'grep' looking around, and I do see that the standard
Seasons skin *defines* a bunch of these unwanted values. Is that enough to
cause them to be reported?

I too am seeing reports from sensors I don't have - leaf and soil temp and

I look forward to hearing more on this, and I'll let y'all know if I figure

[weewx-user] Re: Run a script - with parameter? - via WeeWX?

2021-06-09 Thread Rob Cranfill
Thanks to all who suggested various solutions or approaches. I perhaps was
overly-specific in the original question, saying I wanted to run a script,
when all along the solution was under my nose: there is an example provided
in the standard distro that does, I think, just what I want -
/usr/share/doc/weewx/examples/lowBattery.py

I will dink around with that and report back here if I find anything
significant.

Thanks again,

Thanks, Vince, I will check out using a .tmpl file to create a text file,

[weewx-user] Run a script - with parameter? - via WeeWX?

2021-06-07 Thread Rob Cranfill
Apologies if this has been asked - I searched without luck - let me know
where to look.

I would like to have WeeWX tell me when my weather station's battery is low
- perhaps running a script once a day that can check the battery status and
send me mail if it's low. (All kinds of weirdness happens when it gets that
way, which I always forget about and freak out thinking the whole system is
boofed, when it's really only a low battery.)

Currently I have a cron job that "screen scrapes" the main page, where the
Sensor Status / Battery Status / Transmitter Battery field has the info I
want ("OK", or "LOW", I think). But that's kinda clunky.

The best I can come up with so far is to configure the system to also
output a simple HTML page - or maybe just a text file? - with that one
value in it, that will simplify the parsing/scraping, but that's still not
very elegant.

Or is this just beyond the scope of WeeWX?

Thanks for any suggestions,
 Rob in Seattle

Re: [weewx-user] Re: Corrupted Memory card. Now I lost 6 months of data?

2020-12-28 Thread Rob Cranfill
With all this talk about "good quality" SD cards, can anyone share a
recommendation?

I have an SSD that I run my main WeeWX/HomeAssistant server on, but I have
several others that I play around with, and need to get some new SD cards
for that purpose, so I figure I may as well get some "good" ones.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Re: [weewx-user] Re: WeeWx error "Vantage: LOOP read error. Try ... "

2020-12-28 Thread Rob Cranfill
Tom,

I don't *think* I did (have multiple instances running), and have since
tried running weewx from the command line (after stopping the service, of
course and verifying no 'weewx' processes), with the same result. I'll keep
mucking with it, and if I still have probs will start a new thread.

Thanks,
 Rob

2020-12-27 Thread Rob Cranfill
I've been running weewx for years, and now all of a sudden I am having this
problem over and over again.

Now, this is a new build on this same RPI - I had a SSD crash - but it
seems substantially the same as before, yet here I am.

I realize this has to do with the OS's time not being "correct",
whatever that means. So why does this confuse me?

[weewx-user] Re: Wind speed without units

2020-12-20 Thread Rob Cranfill
Thanks, all! Looks like there is more than one way to accomplish this,
thanks for the suggestions. :-)

I think I like the looks of this, which does what I want:

$current.windSpeed.format(add_label=False) –
$span($time_delta=1800).windSpeed.max.format(add_label=False) MPH

which gives me a result like "3 - 14 MPH", where the first number is the
current speed and the 2nd is the peak in the last 30 minutes.

2020-12-20 Thread Rob Cranfill
I'm making a skin to display on a small screen (a 7" RPi LCD) and would
like to format the wind speed myself, but $windSpeed and all other wind
values seem to include the "mph" string. Is there a tag that is just the
numeric value?

I guess one option is to use skin.conf to set the units to "", right? Is
there another way?

Thanks for any suggestions!

[weewx-user] Thanks, and a simple skin

2020-12-13 Thread Rob Cranfill
Thanks to all who have helped me recently - Vince, tk - I have more or less
finished my simple weewx skin, which I display on a dedicated Raspberry Pi
LCD thing I had sitting around.

I thought I would share the code - such as it is - so I posted it to
GitHub. Enjoy!

Re: [weewx-user] Max wind in last... hour?

2020-12-12 Thread Rob Cranfill
Thanks, that seems to be what I wanted! (Actually, I think I'm going to use
$span($time_delta=1800).windSpeed.max for a 30-minute peak.)

(Altho we have no wind here in Seattle at the moment so I can't really see
the results... but at least it does evaluate to *something*. ;-) )

[weewx-user] Max wind in last... hour?

2020-12-12 Thread Rob Cranfill
(My last question was answered so quickly and well, let's see if that can
happen again!)

Can my skin (which I'm developing for a little RPi LCD display, and I will
share once I'm semi-done) display the max wind in the last, say, 60 minutes?

I've tried

   Recent peak wind:
$span($hour_delta=1).wind.max

and variations thereon, to no avail.

Anyone?

[weewx-user] Tag to display archive interval?

2020-12-12 Thread Rob Cranfill
Is there a tag to let me display the archive interval? (From a skin I've
created.)

I'd like to be able to show something like

 Wind: $current.windSpeed ($current.windGust gust in
$system.archive_interval)

or something.

Did I miss this in the manual?

Thanks for any help.

I want to create a super-simple display for an Android tablet I'll set up
running in my living room as a non-interactive display. I've looked at the

[weewx-user] Y-Axis label on combined plot?

2020-07-11 Thread Rob Cranfill
I have combined my basement ("inside") temperature and humidity plots into
one graph - cuz I kinda don't look at that much, so why take up space with
two graphs? - and I can't figure out how to change the y-axis label. (I
realize I am kinda plotting apples and oranges, here, in that they are
different units. so sue me. ;-) )

In Seasons' skin.conf:

[[[daytemphumin]]]
inTemp
inHumidity

and it more or less Does The Right Thing, but (from
http://robcranfill.net/weather/daytemphumin.png)

I'd like that "%" label in the upper left corner to be, oh, "°F / %" or
something like that.

Ideas?

This is WeeWX 4.1.1, if that matters.

Thanks!

[weewx-user] Re: sftp on 3.9.2, RPI3B -- **still** not working with several methods

2020-05-27 Thread Rob Cranfill
Dear Mr or Ms Potamia, ;-)

I have code that I hacked into the standard Weewx base that implements proper
sftp. If you would like a copy I can send it to you. (And anyone else who’d
like a copy.) Just one modified file.

[weewx-user] Re: Booting existing RPi3b from USB rather than SD

2020-04-08 Thread Rob Cranfill
monmul,

I’ll go ahead and answer your question even though I have nothing of great
value to add, because I happen to have done exactly this about 2 weeks ago.

Yes, you can copy your SD card-based filesystem that is running weewx to an
SSD, as detailed in various places on the ‘net, and it works just fine. Nothing
special about weeex there.

(I will add that I was unable to get this box, a “Raspberry Pi 3 Model B Rev
1.2”, to boot entirely without an SD card, as is supposedly possible. That is,
I still have an SD card with the /boot partition on it, where cmdline.txt then
points to the /dev/sda1 (or whatever it was) for the rest of the filesystem on
the SSD. So in that sense I’m not doing a full USB boot, but for the most part
the filesystem is on SSD, not SD, so I’m happy. Not sure why this is, but I’ve
given up trying to fix it.)

[weewx-user] Re: Integration with Alexa

2016-12-28 Thread Rob Cranfill
FWIW, I haven't quite "closed the loop" in my own
Davis->weewx->HomeAssistant->Alexa setup, but I was thinking about just
trying to get Alexa to access my WeatherUnderground data, which of course
comes from my station. So I guess that would then be
Davis->weewx->WeatherUnderground->Alexa. And WU certainly has the past data
- not sure about their API.

Re: [weewx-user] "insecure string pickle" from FTP report

2016-11-27 Thread Rob Cranfill
I am indeed running on borrowed time - that is, on a good old-fashioned
(and old) SD card. I've been waiting for it to die, any time now. Perhaps
this is it.

Thanks - I guess. ;-)

[weewx-user] "insecure string pickle" from FTP report

2016-11-27 Thread Rob Cranfill
This is similar to some issues posted previously, but a) is not exactly the
same, and b) continues to bedevil me. So I humbly ask for any assistance
dealing with this issue. Which is, to post the log (with debug=1), thus:

I started this log capture shortly after reloading the service; I hope I
got all relevant info.

I have, many times, deleted the /var/www/#FTP.last file, but this continues
to happen within hours of doing so.

I note that other similar issues have had something, perhaps, to do with
the real time clock, but mine is being set correctly, as indicated above.

Suggestions? Thanks for any help!

[weewx-user] Re: Noob question... where to find the actual data (temp) within weewx?

2016-11-04 Thread Rob Cranfill
I see that you mention "images" in your question, and it looks like you
have perhaps already got the answer you needed, but I wanted to reply to
this thread in case others are brought here later, with a response to the
question I *thought* you were asking (but I may have been wrong!).

I recently wrote a bash shell script (to be invoked by 'cron') that emails
me the previous day's rain total. To do so I invoke a SQL script to get the
data from the database, which is what I thought you were looking to do.

*#!/bin/bash*
*# email me summary of yesterday's local weather*
*# robcranf...@xxx.com*

*SQL_RESULT=`echo "SELECT DATETIME(MAX(dateTime), 'unixepoch', 'localtime')
\*
* AS Date, sum AS RainTotal FROM archive_day_rain WHERE dateTime < (SELECT
MAX(dateTime) \*
*  FROM archive_day_rain);" | sqlite3 /var/lib/weewx/weewx.sdb`*

*SUBJECT=`echo $SQL_RESULT | awk 'BEGIN { FS="[| ]"} {print "Rain for",
$1}'`*
*MESSAGE=`echo $SQL_RESULT | awk 'BEGIN { FS="[| ]"} {print "The total rain
on", $1, "was", $3, "inches.\n"}'`*

*echo $MESSAGE |*
*  mutt -s "$SUBJECT" -e 'my_hdr From:WeexReporter@x10pi' --
robcranf...@xxx.com*
