You will need a list of what monuments to photograph

This list *should* come from a somewhat authoritative source, like the
government, some museum... not made up by the wikimedians or that random
youtuber.

In fact, I would say that many lists used by WLM organizers are not 1:1
mappings to the "official lists": they may join multiple lists, remove
monuments that cannot be legally photographed...

The local organizers may use a different criteria for local winners than
for photos going to the International Contest, and that is fine. A typical
case is related to sponsors some specific prize (e.g. suppose Nikon had a
branch in St. Eustatius that provides a prize to the best photo with one of
their cameras). You may also have rules about not giving more than one
prize to the same person, etc. It is not uncommon that not all monuments
participate in both local and international competition (e.g. you have two
lists for the local competition, but only monuments in one of them is used
for the International contest).
You need to define, and transmit clearly what your rules will be, but other
than that, that is really no issue. You still have enough time to write it
down before the competition begins.

The international jury will generally not interfere with your decisions of
what should be forwarded and whatnot. I guess they might if a local team
had a crazy proposal, but people there is usually reasonable :)

And of course, the list itself of monuments to photograph should be public.
Ideally you would talk with St Eustatuis government (?) to get permission
to use and publish that unofficial and unpublished so far list for your
competition.

Congratulations, WLM-UA team. That's a shocking achievement, given the
current situation that Ukraine is going through!

May 2023 be a *much* happier year for Ukraine, with all the other countries
having to suffer their participants no longer having more pressing concerns
than snapping beautiful pics.
(I'm sadly aware the war consequences are unlikely to disappear so easily,
but one may dream...)

We should ideally be able to measure the relationship between sitenotice
and contributors. And, if we currently don't have enough data for that,
design WLM in such a way we will be able to measure that so it can be used
for future contests.

There is probably a chain of # banner impressions → # visits to contest
page → # users actually paying attention → # users participating

While the absolute number of visits to the contest page coming from
sitenotice should be relatively simple to count, the number of people that
viewed will depend on the campaign configuration and the presence of other
campaigns at the same time (e.g. fundraising), plus on the actual traffic
received from that country (probably complicated, but could be calculated)
*plus* the actual configuration of the user hiding the banner or the diet
restricting the number of times it is shown per device.

Then, we have an additional handicap that our reaction won't be
immediate.Users are unlikely to have photos of designated Monuments without
an image sitting on their computer ready to be uploaded. If a user is going
to actually find a suitable nearby monument in the list, plan a trip with
its camera (next weekend, perhaps?), actually go out and shoot it, come
back, locally review their photos, select good ones and upload them... It
will take several days, so the effect of the impressions won't be clear.
Furthermore, repeated impressions may be needed to remind them that they
intended to actually tak some photos.
Whereas most people will simply think "Oh, nice project" and let other
people do that work, without wishing to be bothered any more about WLM.

I don't think we actually have the resources to properly measure this, with
all its variables. Perhaps we could recruit some help from the Analytics /
Product Analytics teams?

I think this would need a property mapping a contest with the used
identifiers (basically, that table but in wikidata form).
So for instance,"Wiki Loves Monuments 2021 Sweden" could be defined as
including the "listed building in Sweden (Q328070)" and the "listed
historical ship in Sweden (Q16501309)", which use P1260 and P2317
identifiers respectively (whereas a few years earlier, maybe only Q328070
were included).

I remember when we started WLM internationally. It was just an idea,
something that had been done in the Netherlands last year, a crazy idea to
expand it as an international contest. And see it nowadays, it's almost
taken for granted that there will be a WLM in September (a trap in itself,
participation in further years is easier than the first one, but still,
there's a lot of work!).

I'm not convinced Montage should be *the* communications platform for the
jurors. Actually, I think that having each juror point the images
independently at first is a good thing, as it avoids potential bias based
on other jurors points.
Seems that your national competition used a direct output of the top-10
images as rated by every juror combined, rather than e.g. take the
resulting top-20 and then have the jurors discuss the merits of each one to
make them into a top-10.

Finally, I am a bit concerned about your scenario of a jury member which
«does not want to join calls or does not want to communicate through other
private channels» and «so that communication does not depend on the will of
organizing team or jury team members.». If a jury member reject to
communicate with other jury members, that's a social problem, not a
technical one.
You could make it easier to find all the tools needed (such as adding a
link to the mailing list from montage), and it can be quite hard to get a
suitable time to get everyone online. In that case asynchronous
communication (like mailing lists) may be needed. But ultimately, your jury
members should be willing to communicate with each other. And the
expectation of that they should do so, and may need to perhaps join X
online meetings, should be clear from the start.

What makes you think that someone who refused communicating with other
members would however be willing to communicate with them if done through
montage?

If the new image is exactly the same as the one we had, it makes sense to
delete one, yes. And usually you would remove the last one to be uploaded.
For instance some people may be using of the images with the old name. We
could delete them but place a redirect to the other copy, that seems a good
compromise. Or even merge both copies at the old name, so the uploader
appears in the history.

An experienced user may use a different upload form, as long as the image
ends up with the appropriate template.
At least, that's what I have always done where i am involved:
- Let the rules say that the images must use a free license such as *X, Y,
Z...* but explicitly allow any license accepted in Commons.
- Suggest using the WLM upload campaign, but document that they may use a
different as ong as they use {{Wiki Loves Monuments 2019|country-code}}.
- Put the burden on the uploader to ensure that they are using the right
identifier but otherwise allow that it gets fixed by someone else.

By focusing the rules on the result instead of the how we avoid needing to
verify *how* it was done, and only the final result is needed. It also
allows advanced users to use other means, such as uploading using Commonist.

Other country contests may -perhaps inadvertently- have set more strict
rules, though.

You are right!
You need to zoom in a lot in order for them to be loaded. Then you can zoom
out and they are still shown even at the full-globe level.
It's probably related to not being able to load too many monuments at once,
but it is confusing. :/

The "go to the map" link shows no monument at all. Nothing on Ireland,
nothing on Latvia... whereas browsing differently, they are included.

No. You can't search uploaded files by user geolocation.
(Technically, it might be possible to cross the info from several logs 
to get it, but (a) it'd be complex to perform and (b) I'm pretty sure 
such request would be rejected)

your effort in contributing to WLM 2016, but photos taken from the 
internet…"

* The photos can be published using the [[Wiki Loves Monuments Upload 
Wizard]], designed to help in the participation on this contest.


* Those uploading their photos not using this wizard must indicate their 
participation manuall adding the code  {{Wiki Loves Monuments 2016|xy}} 
to the image page.



Also, a similarly designed point is:

* It is the participant responsibility to ensure that the photos are 
tagged with a valid identifier…
(ie. if they didn't put the right identifier but someone else did for 
them, that's ok, but they shall not rely on it)

I have been working to install a local test instance of wlxjury. I more or
less configured it (not all things are clear, and for greater confusion,
there are two different configuration files: application.ini
and application.conf), but it failed with an OutOfMemoryError at the first

It could be recreated from the wiki pages it was built from.

However, I'm unsure that you really need that. You can -with a little 
effort- match the images for a given monument ID with its upload time.

Please note that when other years some countries participated later, 
that didn't move the dates for the international contest. They had less 
time for (eg. if it was Sep 15 to Oct 15, the jury had only half month 
to review everything). And in other country only the photos uploaded in 
September counted for the international contest.


Yes, all these conditionals are difficult to communicate, explain and 
justify. Both for participants and partners. Upload in September, 
anywhere was much much simple ☹

You can't. Once a page is deleted, it no longer belongs to any category. 
If you know a time frame you could check (categorylinks) on an old dump

Hello Beat,
I just found this proposal while reviewing old unread mail, and seems 
very interesting.


This would basically simply need the variables {{contest}}, {{year}}, 
{{previous year}}, {{previous month}}, {{coordinating team}} and {{team 
signature}}, plus the country list and run the same survey on any contest.
The cool thing is that we could perform a blind replacement on the 
translations we currently have and it _should_ work.


This kind of usage assumes that on all languages the contest name will 
appear on the same part of the phrase (which is probably the case) and 
won't be differences like WLM and WLE having different genders.

There are commonswiki dumps for dates 20140401, 20140421, 20140508. This 
allows to know which files where there *at that specific date*.

But not for a file added and removed at an intermediate date.

If you don't mind about deleted files (eg, they can't participate), you 
can scan a dump for all files that contained the template on any revision.


However, for including deleted files you would need to view the files 
uploaded and deleted in that timeframe and check each of their revisions‼



In order to solve this very same problem at WLM, what I did was to 
follow the category, registering every few minutes the images that were 
added, producing a quite good approximation. But we obviously can't do 
the same thing for images uploaded last month :/

bug (49749) and those messages didn't trigger email notification. We 
will try to fix that.


While we work on that, we still miss many translations of that message,

Giving out 10 prizes to 10 people is easy: give the prizes to #11 and 
#12. The question on which of his photos should represent them on 
international level is much harder. Although you could as well submit 
his three photos but only provide one prize (hopefully not too 
controversial, but it would be desirable that your contest had a “only 
one prize per head” rule).


My POV on the original questions :
- Yes, I would consider “father” a family member.
- The local organization is the gate for the international level, so it 
can ban a photo from entering there (actually I find more problematic 
that it is sent to the international round than it being discarded).
- If the rules stated that no family members of the jury can 
participate, the jury decision was «buggy». Rejecting that photo and 
requesting a new result from the jury (typically just entering the next 
scored picture) is indeed the right thing to do.


If your chapter doesn't want a family member to win but your rules 
didn't state that, it would have been much shady decision, which is why 
I consider important that the rules are as detailed as possible, despite 
not really liking long legalese-like pages (promoting a summarised 
version ftw).

The tools at http://toolserver.org/~platonides/wlm2013/ will consider 
only the first template.
Last year the database was designed to support a second country, but it 
was so exceptional that it wasn't implemented. I think we identified a 
single case of multicountry monumentness before the contest, plus 
perhaps a couple more found later for some rivers.


I can easily add detection of multiple countries, the trickiness starts 
when querying it, which not only results in more complex checks for the 
database, but it's not even clear how it should be defined: What should 
be the answer for How many images have am and az together? Should 
Ամարասի_վանք,_վանքային_համալիր_jpg be counted once (as for How many 
images are in total?) or be the sum of images of both countries?

How to count the number of countries in which a user did photos, etc.


If the problem is limited to monuments in Azerbaijan and Armenia 
contests, it may be simpler for the bot to detect that case and 
internally map those images to an am+az pseudo-country.



PS: I agree with Multichill, renaming a monument template (or adding new 
variants such as redirects to it) will make the bot to suddenly not 
detect the monument identifier.

look up the id for you (and it wouldn't). And in the worst case, a 
volunteer may see it has a wrong number, think it's not a monument and 
remove it from the list of participants.
As the uploader, you are the best suited one to find the identifier for 
the monument you have photographed.

Yes, of course you can upload as many images of the same monument as you 
wish. Several angles, several sides of the building, include different 
views of the inside in addition of the exterior. A monument is much more 
than a single photo.
(On the other hand, if you have 30 identical shots, you may want to 
choose a single one for upload)

responsability. Do you really want to reprimend the user because he

I find the # of monuments parameter strange.

 Are the show/stop buttons intuitive enough?
No, I don't know what they are supposed to do. Show apparently starts 
searching for monuments and Stop stops it middleway, but I don't know 
why there's such process.


Perhaps the groups should have been cached per country?

Also note that sometimes the links go outside the white balloon or the 
photo is only partially shown, with part of it above the top of the 
viewport.

We will start with a flash-mob in Yerevan (capital of Armenia). We have a

moment they will all together, suddenly start to photograph monuments of
this square.

Then they will split in smaller groups and go photograph elsewhere. We
will give them printed lists of monuments, as well as flyers to distribute
them.

At the end of the day everyone will come to the city library, where we
will have an upload party (or upload-a-thon).

We are going to do the same event in other cities as well.

We think, this will attract more people to take part to the competition.
Besides, the monuments of these cities will be well documented in
Commmons.

I personally favor a template, as it can not only add it to a category 
but also show  “This is related to the because {{{1}}}” with an icon, 
and is very clear for new users. But I don't oppose to a category 
either. I just request that such category is explicitely listed on the 
page (ie. no category removal because it is already in a subcategory. 
That would create a complication for the image lists).

intermediate app.


If the certificate changes, so should do the app name. We can't expect 
the end users to manually deinstall the old one before installing.
If nothing better, I would publish a WMF-signed update to the old one 
which simply leads you [when opened] to the app store page to install a 
new one.

The piwik server is hosted inside EU and payed by an european chapter.

Your local legislation may vary, but in my humble non-lawyer opinion,

Mostly. Jonathan gave an example with the case of «photo showing war 
memorial in front of WLM church».* I had thought on a photo in the Orsay 
Museum where a WWI painting could be seen (you could also think on a 
battle gallery inside a castle/palace, or a WWI-related piece inside a 
museum).
Not all photos of the Church will be related to the WWI, and not all 
photos of the Museum will be eligible.
And conversely, not all photos of the war memorial could participate 
since they wouldn't be WLM-ones if they didn't include the Church 
(assuming the war memorial is not a monument itself).

It's good to provide a streamlined process with as few options as 
possible, but don't try to give less than we should!


- I think we should provide the users the option to participate into the 
Europeana award.
They are the ones in the best position to assert that their photo is 
indeed somehow related to the topic, and their lack of participation in 
the subcontest shouldn't depend on a noticing that it could participate 
(we would still remove and add when ovbious, as usual).


- The baseline participantes are using the UploadWizard. A new checkbox 
does add an option but is a one-line step.


- Requesting an addition on wikitext would be unfriendly.

- Another UI would add more complexity than what is added by that checkbox.


Thus, IMHO we should go the UW checkbox path.

This was a very good point. IMHO there should be a template used to mark 
this (with an argument explaining the relationship).


If we're lucky maybe we can get a checkbox in the upload wizard to say 
This is a monument related to World Ward I (and thus also eligible to 
participate in the Europeana Prize) (with a new field to fill the 
reason that appears when checked)

I would prefer where possible to see a single campaign per country. The 
identifiers can be made unique by prefixing with the list instead. So it 
could be eg. “identifier Cadw-11210” instead of “identifier 11210 on 
Cadw upload campaign”
There could be four campaigns, with all of them placing the same 
template (differenciating with a parameter, that'd still be much better 
than four different templates), but someone with photos from different 
lists would need to exit one campaign to change into another, instead of 
being able to upload them all from the same screen, which is unintuitive 
(plus a complexity when giving out instructions).

If paying for an online backup service, I would suggest tarsnap. The 
backups are encrypted from the user computer, its source code is 
available (with an unfree license, but that's far more than most 
services) and a reasonable price (50€ = $66.40 would provide a credit of 
221 GB/month).	
The author (Colin Percival) is a FreeBSD hacker, which I consider better 
than paying for that to a greedy company.


However, it has the big downside of not having a friendly interface. :(


As photographers are likely to have a lot of data, I think it is worth 
looking at the online backup idea, but I would prefer if that extra 
storage was provided by the company as a sponsorship, rather than buying 
it from a company of our choice.

Spain also had flickr uploads moved to commons after September. I hope 
you are taking into account the country end dates, too (except il? I 
don't remember it they could fully count in the Guinness or only those 
on Sep).


A simple count of participating images [1] leads to a count of 356732 
photos (of which 420 seem removed on commons), so it will probably be 
closer to 355.000 than 360.000.

Technically, it's perfectly possible. It just needs someone (from WMDE?)

You are right. WLM-CH 2012 ended at 20120930215959 UTC. The other 10
photos were uploaded after the deadline, and were thus not eligible.
As we used a smart template, the WLM template automatically stopped
being added after the deadline.

In this case, he seems to have done four batches of 2, 3, 6 and 1 photos
respectively, but only the first one was in time.

Detecting uploads intended for WLM which miss the template is
interesting, but not simple. Perhaps we should begin by watching files
uploaded with an ID template but no WLM one. However, inexperienced
people missing the WLM template are also unlikely to properly add the
relevant monument-id template.

Is the registration and last edit in commons enough for you or should it
be reported globally?

 mistake (that would make the process much more painful and long) and we
 have easily beaten the record anyway so we can afford this. 
 
 For this purpose, we should generate a clean list of images that
 definitely fulfill the criteria. This means among others that a
 submission is for this definition only considered valid if it really
 made a chance to win the international prize (similar to last year).
 That means for example unfortunately that images from Belgium

@WLM-IT: How can be determined if there was such permission or not?

As much as I would like to all countries to be using monument id
templates, I don't think this can be enforced. Some countries didn't
have/use monument ids at all. Others have them only partially (eg. de).
pl *removed* the templates holding the monument id, and put it on the
category page added to the image.

It would be much easier IMHO to ask the organisers for the list of files
they sent to their jury. We can further filter deleted-since images.

For countries where all members used the Category: page directly (thus
no historic record of what they saw*), we can make an approximation.

What to do if a country first processed all the images and only later
checked if the monument id was valid/missing? I would still count it,
since it «battled» with the other images. And had it passed to the next
round, organisers would have probably tried to fix it even though it was
originally missing.

* Other than crawling the history of Wikimedia Commons pages.


 In the case of
 Italy, the monument has to be on the 'cleared list' (can someone provide
 a complete cleared list as it was valid for the competition 2012?)
 * Uploaded within the time frame for that country. Exception is mass
 uploads from mobile platform and Flickr. I believe Platonides has a
 whitelist for these bot uploaders? 

I could look at the images I have registered as valid, with an upload
time later than the end.


 Am I missing any other criteria that could invalidate according to such
 a strict definition? I'm skipping the 'activated email address' because
 in practice we have reminded people of activating that if relevant on
 several occasions. 
 
 I'd like to get started with this soon, so any quick feedback would be
 welcome.

We could use UN (an un-assigned code in ISO_3166), although if we want
to play safer, we can use XU (user-assigned).

It may be a bit hard to determine the day of the week.

You have a list of numbers:
 1 2 3 4 5 | 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 | 13 14 15 16 17 ...

So -knowing that the pipe splits Sunday from Monday- you have to go back
from that to find out that the 1st of May is actually Wednesday.

We could prepend a couple of empty squares, or simply put the days of
the previous month, ie. 29 30 1 2 3 4 5 | 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 | 13 14 15 16
17 ...

The end of the week is already marked with the dotted vertical bars as
well as the week number.
More year-locality isn't added by what I proposed. Plus all the months
are preceded by the same days of the previous month every year. Except
on leap-years, but this calendar doesn't include Feb 29th anyway.

I'm not so sure. The downside is that now that WLM has finished, I don't
think the users will be opening the app, but it's worth opening a bug
for that anyway, so it can be implemented next year.
As well as getting a notification in the app if you have new talk page
messages (I don't think it does, but I haven't tested).
