Re: [Wiki Loves Monuments] wiki loves monuments exhibition

2013-01-09 Thread Tomasz W . Kozłowski
Hi Santiago,
thanks for the message. Answering your questions in a chronological order:

#1: I believe that local organisers are free to do whatever they want
with the exhibition; if you think that hosting it in two or more
cities for a week at a time would work better for you than having it
in a single place for three weeks in a row, then you are welcome to
move it between the cities.

#2: The dates listed on the Wikimedia Commons timeline page are only
rough, as I take it that people did not have those details at the time
when they signed up on that page.

As far as I see, Wikimedia Sverige wants to hold the exhibition for a
couple of days before and after a local museum conference that is due
on May 15-17, and I am sure that you could discuss the details between
yourselves (but please keep Barbara Fischer in the CC, as she's the
person responsible for dealing with the exhibition on behalf of the
international team).

#3: The international team will cover full costs of shipping the
exhibition to and from your country. At the time when we discussed the
details of the exhibition (October-November) we also agreed to cover
some costs of promotional materials (leaflets, flyers, posters,
stickers etc.), but I am not sure whether this is still the case; I
guess that Barbara might have more details about that.

If you need money to cover the costs of shipping the exhibition
between two or more cities in your country, this should also not be a
problem; in any case, I think we'll need to discuss everything on a
case-per-case basis.

It is not even yet set in stone that the exhibition will be travelling
to Russia, as it is my belief that--once again--we are having
difficulties reaching the team behind Wiki Loves Monuments 2012 in
Russia.

For now, the exhibition is organised so we do not have to cover the
costs of printing several different posters and manage them all at the
same time. We decided to print them in one place and then ship the
exhibition around the world to guarantee almost the same experience
for all visitors -- something that does not necessarily need to be
reached with different exhibitions printed on different materials and
using different techniques.

Of course, as the images are released under CC-BY-SA 3.0 (localised),
everyone is welcome to create their own exhibition by taking a leaf
out of Wikimedia Poland's book.

Re: [Wiki Loves Monuments] Winners, and statistics

2013-01-09 Thread Tomasz W . Kozłowski
Hi Romaine,
thanks for the e-mail.

I updated the map by adding Slovakia; it simply looks like everyone
forgot to edit it at the time when Slovakia joined the competition. As
for Malta, obviously it did not take part in Wiki Loves Monuments
2012, so I removed the images from that category as well as deleted
[[Category:Images from Wiki Loves Monuments 2012 in Malta]] and
[[Category:Wiki Loves Monuments 2012 in Malta]].

We are also aware of the need of having a central page with all the
statistics, and are in the middle of creating it; there are just some
technical problems with our Piwik scripts (too much data to work on!),
and we haven't yet managed to analyse the results of the participants'
survey. In any case, the page is not forgotten, and surely will be
created in the weeks to come.

[Wiki Loves Monuments] Closing the participants' survey (at last)

2012-12-28 Thread Tomasz W . Kozłowski
Hi there,
this is just to inform you that we will be closing the participants'
survey with the end of the year, that is on 23:59 UTC, December 31,
2012 -- so if there is anyone that is still waiting with adding his or
her answers to the survey, I ask you not to wait too long :-))

I have been thinking about closing the survey for the past month or
so, but unbelievably, we are still receiving new replies every day!
There have been over 1,750 replies so far, but we'll need to set the
closing date anyway, so I decided it to be December 31.

The survey is available at
<http://toolserver.org/~platonides/wlmsurvey/wlm2012.php>.

2012-11-29 Thread Tomasz W . Kozłowski
Hi there,
this is just to let you know that today we have reached yet another
milestone in terms of Quality images; there are now exactly 1,500
files in [[Category:Quality images from Wiki Loves Monuments 2012]]!

The lucky milestone picture is a photograph of the statue of Ludwig
IX, Duke of Bavaria in Landshut, Germany, taken by Diego Delso,
[[User:Poco a poco]]
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Estatua_de_Luis_IX,_Duque_de_Baviera,_Dreifaltigkeitsplatz,_Landshut,_Alemania,_2012-05-27,_DD_01.JPG>;
congratulations Diego!

Aside from Quality images, we also have 35 Featured pictures, 30
Valued images as well as 6 images used in valued image sets; you can
have a look at the numbers yourselves at
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Highlighted_content_from_Wiki_Loves_Monuments>.

We will probably not break 2,000 until the end of the year, but I
guess that having over 1,500 Quality images is a great achievement
nonetheless!

[Wiki Loves Monuments] The travelling WLM photo exhibition needs YOU!

2012-11-18 Thread Tomasz W . Kozłowski
Hi there,
I am happy to announce that we are now able to organise a travelling
photo exhibition consisting of the 12 winning Wiki Loves Monuments
2013 pictures, as chosen by the international jury (which, by the way,
should be announced soon!).

We intend to have the exhibition visit about 6-10 places around the
world from December 2012 until around August-September 2013, with
almost all the costs being covered from the international budget.

As I've been sending a lot of e-mails to this list in the past few
days, I'll make this long story short :-) Please read all the details
at
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2012/Exhibition>,
write down your names in the table at the bottom of the page, and do

[Wiki Loves Monuments] Organisers' survey

2012-11-09 Thread Tomasz W . Kozłowski
Hi there,
with the participants' survey slowly reaching its end, I would like
you to spend a little of your time on filling yet another
questionnaire that I hope will come useful for the evaluation of this
year's contest and will help us to make Wiki Loves Monuments 2013 even
better than it is now.

Just like last year, we have prepared around 20 questions for you to
answer, which -- as our beta-testers report :-) -- should take about
15 minutes at maximum to go through. Unlike the participants' survey,
due to its smaller scope (in terms of surveyees), this one is based on
a Google Form, but I hope you'll be OK with it :-))

When it comes to privacy, we will of course share the results of the
survey with anyone wishing to have a look at it after analyzing and
anonymizing the results -- so if you have any feedback that you'd like
to stay private for whatever reasons, please feel free to fill out the
survey without specyfing your name(s).

The survey is available at
<https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dGMtRG5TNVdWck16X3dlTGdSWTc3VkE6MA>.
I intend to close it in two weeks from now, that is in the early UTC
morning of Saturday, November 17; I hope you'll have enough time to
fill it during that period.

Thanks in advance for your time and your feedback; as always, feel
free to ask any questions that will come to your mind, and do not
hesitate to give long answers in the survey -- the more information we
have, the better :-)

[Wiki Loves Monuments] Feedback for the evaluation of WLM 2012

2012-11-03 Thread Tomasz W . Kozłowski
Hi there,
a month after the end of the competition, I think it's about time we
start slowly evaluating what was wrong and what was good with the
organisation of the contest.

In order to get some feedback from you, I just set up a dedicated page
on Commons; please write down your opinions about this year's
organisation, and your suggestions for next year(s) at
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2012/Feedback>.

This page will be open until the evaluation meeting that we're
planning to hold in the middle of January, so please take your time;
I'm looking forward to getting as many opinions as possible, and am
not afraid of receiving criticism; it is, after all, the only way we
can move forward and make WLM 2013 even better :-))

In a weeks' time, I am planning to send out an organisers' survey that
Lodewijk wrote about recently, so if you prefer your feedback to
remain anonymous, you'll have a chance to provide it that way (but
we're mostly interested in getting data that could be analysed). In
any case, I'll be looking forward to hearing from you!

[Wiki Loves Monuments] Translation of the survey and the invitation

2012-10-25 Thread Tomasz W . Kozłowski
Hi there,
this is just to inform you that 6 additional messages have been added
to the Wiki Loves Monuments survey, and they too need to be translated
into your languages (currently: Czech, Danish, Estonian, Hebrew,
Malayalam, Romanian, Russian, Serbian (Latin script), Swedish,
Tagalog, Ukrainian, Italian and French).

You can have a look at the full translation statistics for the survey
at
<https://translatewiki.net/w/i.php?title=Special:MessageGroupStats&language=pl&group=tsint-wlmsurvey>.

Additionaly, the thank you message that we will be sending out to the
users has been translated only into the following languages:
Belarusian, Belarusian (Taraskievica ortography), Catalan, Czech,
Danish, English, Spanish, Estonian, French, Italian, Russian, Serbian
(Cyrillic script), Serbian (Latin script), Swedish and Tagalog). The
rest of the languages /do not/ have a translated version of the
message, and the users will have to use the English one.

I have received the full list of Wiki Loves Monuments 2012
participants today, and will start sending out the thank you message
tomorrow, October 26, at 15:00 (UTC). This is a hard deadline (because
we're already late), so please, please make sure to have the message

[Wiki Loves Monuments] Translation of the thank-you and survey invitation message

2012-10-18 Thread Tomasz W . Kozłowski
Hi there again,
with the translation of the survey going strong, I think it's time to
translate one more thing (but it's the last one this year, I
promise!).

Just like last year, we have prepared a thank-you note that will be
sent out to all the participants, thanking them for their involvement
with Wiki Loves Monuments 2012 and inviting them to fill out the
survey. This time, it's based on Commons and uses the well-known
translation scheme; please have a look at
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Template:WLM_2012_thank_you/en>
and if you have a spare minute, please translate this short text into
your language.

To make things easier for you (and the participants), I've listed all
the languages on top of the page; just click the link and you should
be able to translate the text into the language of your choice;
however, please make sure to copy the trick, as this
is what makes the header work.

Again, thanks in advance for your time, and please do not hesitate to
ask any questions that you might have!

PS With the survey, we only miss Afrikaans, the two Belarusian
ortographies, Hindi, the two Norwegian ortographies, and Slovak while
Luxembourgish, Malayalam, Swahili, Tamil and Telugu are still being
translated.

Hi Roel,
thanks for your work on the Tagalog translation, it's appreciated!

For now, I think we're half the way in translating the survey; we have
it ready in 15 languages (including the two scripts of Serbian), but
we're still missing the following:

* Afrikaans;
* Belarusian (in both ortographies);
* Danish;
* Hindi;
* Norwegian (Bokmål or Nynorsk);
* Slovak;
* Tamil.

Furthermore, the following languages are still being translated, so
you are very welcome to help out:

* Czech;
* French;
* Italian;
* Luxembourgish;
* Malayalam;
* Swahili;
* Telugu.

As always: if you happen to speak one of these languages and have a

know people that do, please spread the word!

[Wiki Loves Monuments] Survey translation request

2012-10-13 Thread Tomasz W . Kozłowski
Hi there,
it is with a great pleasure that I inform you that we have -- thanks
to Raymond -- finally managed to get the Wiki Loves Monuments survey
pushed onto the Translatewiki for you to be able to translate in an
easy way. Please have a look at
<https://translatewiki.net/w/i.php?title=Special%3ATranslate&taction=translate&group=tsint-wlmsurvey&limit=100&task=untranslated>
and pick up the language you would like to translate the survey
messages into.

For now, we would like to focus on the 27 main languages used in
countries participating in Wiki Loves Monuments 2012. We still lack
translations of the messages into the following languages:

* Afrikaans;
* Belarusian -- both in the normative and in the Taraškievica
ortographies, though having at least one would be fine with me;
* Catalan;
* Czech;
* Danish;
* Estonian;
* French;
* Hebrew;
* Hindi;
* Italian;
* Malayalam;
* Dutch;
* Norwegian (Bokmål or Nynorsk) -- same as with Belarusian;
* Polish;
* Romanian;
* Russian;
* Slovak;
* Serbian (Latin script);
* Swedish;
* Swahili;
* Tamil;
* Telugu;
* Tagalog;
* Ukrainian.

There is no defined schedule for translating the survey messages, but
I would appreciate having them ready as soon as possible in order to
use the slowly fading attention of our users, as the later we publish
the survey, the less answers we are likely to get (I presume).

We are going to invite the users to take part in the survey and send
them a thank-you note as soon as the survey is ready with an automated
"notification system" (in other words, a bot with the flood flag).

In any case, thanks in advance for your time and your contributions,
and as always, please feel free to ask any questions that you might
find helpful in translating the survey.

There is no just in case, you /have/ to publish your results before
that date, or there will be trouble in getting the decision of the
international jury in time, getting the calendars published &
delivered on time, etc. We have experienced that snowballing effect
last year, and there is no way this can happen again.

Re: [Wiki Loves Monuments] Feedback for survey questions

2012-10-09 Thread Tomasz W . Kozłowski
Hi Platonides,
thanks for your work on this, it looks great.

Just a couple of small details: I thought about having our suggestions
("Select all that apply, "You can leave that field empty", etc.) moved
below the questions, and marked with a grey font (I see you use CSS
for that, so it should be easy enough.)

I would also remove the for the Introduction part, and would
appreciate it greatly if you could replace the Toolserver logo with
our own (WLM). I would also suggest setting Vector as the default skin
for the survey.

And a few more questions: will the survey automatically recognise the
language of the user, or will we need to have a languages box at the
top of the page? How about getting acccess to the source of the
survey, and its results, where would those be stored?

Thanks for your work on this, it's awesome!

Just did that, thanks for the suggestion.

Ah, looks like I forgot about this one, but I was mostly thinking
about organised results (with graphs, etc.), not just about answers
put into an Excel file; I can vaguely remember that there weren't too
many volunteers to do that part of the job (which is understandable).

> I would add a question about the way they uploaded their files:

Aren't we able to get this data without asking this question in the
survey? I was under the impression that we can at least get a
more-or-less correct number of UploadWizard uploads through the
CatScan tool; I know it would also work for the VicunaUploader created
by Yarl; not sure about Commonist and the old upload form.

I think we can use Q14 ("What was the main obstacle, if any, for you
to participate in the competition? If you wish, you can elaborate in
detail.") for that one.

> Another question that I thought could be good was, "would you be willing

I think it was also suggested by Tamara on Etherpad today, so I guess
the question has some merit (no offence Tamara!), but I am not
entirely convinced we should use it. We already have contact
information to Wikimedia user groups that organised WLM 2010, 2011,
and 2012, and have also received contact information from a lot of
people from countries that did not participate yet through the blog.

Re: [Wiki Loves Monuments] Feedback for survey questions

2012-10-08 Thread Tomasz W . Kozłowski
(Note: this is a general answer to both Els's and WSC's comments.)

@Els: I think that this is a good idea to change the second answer
into the one you suggested, so I went ahead and did so (it now reads:
"I took the pictures between October 2011 and August 2012").

I also agree with your other suggestion (and I think it was also
brought up by Jane, too) of adding the willingness-to-share option, so
we now have 5 possible answers for Q9 (+ an "Other" option).

While preparing this survey, I've been reading some great survey tips
from a Harvard University researched, David S. Walonick, who suggested
that you should not present people with more than 5 choices for an
answer, because it makes the survey/questionnaire too long and boring
for the respondents, and I would like to stick to that suggestion. (It
was also he who suggested to include a confidentiality/anonimity
policy that I wrote down in the introduction.)

I am not sure how you know that "It was fun!" was a major motive that
people chose in our previous survey(s), because I can't remember the
2011 survey results ever being published publicly (due to us not
having the manpower to work on them). Perhaps you were talking about
different surveys that I don't know about?

I am also not sure if asking people questions about placing the images
on Wikipedia or using the Quality images process actually fits in the
scope of this survey; this is a hard-core Wikipedian's job, and I
doubt that the new users we try to reach with this survey even know
how to place an image into an article, or what a Quality image is.

Question Y is included in our survey as Q15, and as for Question Z, I
don't think that this survey is the right place to ask it. We might do
so, but I would very, very much like us to limit ourselves to 20
questions; the survey cannot be too long, and it's already much longer
than the one we used last year.

In any case, thanks a lot for your comments; I appreaciate them very much.

[Wiki Loves Monuments] Feedback for survey questions

2012-10-07 Thread Tomasz W . Kozłowski
Hi,
in the past few days, we have been working on the participant's survey
that's planned to be sent out after the end of the competition (in
Israel). The planned date is not yet known; I would like to send it
out as soon as we have it translated into the 25 main languages of the
participating countries.

Taking last years' survey as a starting point, we have prepared 19
questions that I think would be useful to ask the participants.
Because it's always better to have some feedback on such matters
coming from a wider group of people, I would like to ask you to have a
look at it and help us make it better.

The questions are available on an Etherpad at
<http://etherpad.wikimedia.org/WLM-2012-survey>; you can provide
feedback on this very mailing list, or if you feel like more private,
you can drop us an e-mail at .

[Wiki Loves Monuments] Why deadlines exist

2012-10-04 Thread Tomasz W . Kozłowski
Hello there,
it came to my attention today that several users have been reverting
Platonides' Wiki-Bot, contesting it's "decision" about disqualifying
pictures uploaded to Wikimedia Commons after midnight local time.

I am aware of the fact that there have been probably hundreds of files
uploaded in the night of September 30/October 1, and plenty of those
did not make it before midnight. I am also aware that in the
perspective of a month, 2, 5, or even 20 minutes do not make any
difference, but we have all agreed to have this competition running
for exactly a month -- from midnight local time on September 1 until
23:59:59 local time on September 30 (while taking into consideration
the needs of countries with multiple timezones, too.)

There is an English saying that you shouldn't change the rules in the
middle of the game; I think it would apply for changing the rules
/after the end/ of the game, too. What is more, it isn't fair for
people from other countries that put a lot of effort into making it
before the deadline if you decide to accept photos uploaded in October
in your country, for whatever reason.

Having said so, I would urge every local team to give this some
consideration, and try to explain to your participants' why pictures
uploaded after midnight do not participate in the competition.

Thanks in advance,

Re: [Wiki Loves Monuments] Admin authority

2012-09-30 Thread Tomasz W . Kozłowski
Hi Roel,
I am afraid I don't really understand what you mean by "to give (...)
Admin control to manage submissions".

There is no way that the Wiki Loves Monuments community -- which in
itself is much smaller than the wider community of Wikimedia Commons
-- can "give" anybody any rights on the latter project.

Of course, we have been assigning user rights in the past month or two
to many people, especially UploadCampaign editor rights, but our
community as such cannot guarantee the local organisers any additional
rights on Commons.

I can understand how tedious it is to have to request (un)deletions
for a lot of pictures, but I am afraid there is very little we can do
about it. If you'd like to become an administrator on Commons (even
just for a temporary period), there is no other way to do that than to
start an RfA on the appropriate page on that project.

PS I have just disabled the CentralNotice banners for the Philippines;
the campaign is also no longer categorising the photos into
[[Category:Images from Wiki Loves Monuments 2012 in the Philippines]].

The code is just about 200-250 lines in Python, so it might not be as
usable as our official WLM application. I am, however, not able to
test it because my smartphone uses an old Android 2.1 :-(

They are not using any of our APIs at the moment; the data they use is
based on a recent Wikipedia dump, as I have been told, and has not

Re: [Wiki Loves Monuments] Idea for WLM app's afterlife

2012-09-28 Thread Tomasz W . Kozłowski
Hi Philip,
this wouldn't be very related to your question, but I've been recently
pointed to the idea of user notifications; e.g. when user passes by a
building (for instance a monument) for which we have geocoordinates
but no picture, s/he might receive a notification from the app to take
a photo.

This was originally thought as a feature for the WLM app, but it might
be useful for another purposes, too (for instance, for buildings which
are not monuments, etc.).

Re: [Wiki Loves Monuments] Checklist for the end of submissions? Misc

2012-09-28 Thread Tomasz W . Kozłowski
Hi Peter,
thanks for the questions; this is a reply to your original e-mail, so
I might have missed some of the things brought up by other people.

1. As far as I see, the "buttons", as you call them -- I guess that
you mean those "Upload photo" links visible on the lists on Wikipedia
-- are not time-sensitive. To remove them from the lists would require
some manual work (e.g. editing the template on every Wikipedia that
uses them).

However, I don't think we need to do that at all; we can keep those
buttons there, just making sure that pictures will not be uploaded to
"our" categories after the end of the competition. Leaving the upload
links on the lists could possibly lead people to upload more pictures
during the year; I am aware that this might have a negative level on
the number of pictures uploaded next year, but this isn't our goal, is
it?

2. I am not sure what notice you have in mind; this is probably
something that can only be done by the many national teams on their
external websites or on the project pages on their respective
Wikipedias.

3. I guess people would like to have at least a day or two of rest
from Wiki Loves Monuments before starting to work on the results, you
know :-))

4. I will be shutting off the campaigns sequentially, country by
country, just as I did when enabling them in the first place; the
exact schedule is available at
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2012/Checklist>.

There is no need to change the running campaigns that much, as the
almost only thing that matters to us is to make sure that the late
pictures don't land in our categories, and this is achieved
automatically by the {{WLM-is-running}} template.

5. I am afraid that there isn't enough time to translate the phrase
into all the languages, especially as there is only two days left. We
/might/ create a thank-you banner, but this would also require some
manual work from a great number of people, and I am not sure we have
enough time.

Re: [Wiki Loves Monuments] Calendars

2012-09-23 Thread Tomasz W . Kozłowski
Thanks for the comments, WereSpielCheckquers and Platonides!

1. I am not sure whether we'll be including file descriptions at all
this year; it was the only thing besides the last page that made the
calendars not language-neutral. This is something we try to avoid as
much as possible, as we're having WLM in more countries that use
non-Latin alphabets than last year.

I'm not saying "no" to descriptions in English, but this /is/ a
problem, and we will not be able to translate them into the 37
languages used in WLM countries, especially due to technical and
financial reasons. If you'd prefer to have the descriptions below the
photos, I'll make sure to have them in a bigger font than last year
:-))

2. The names of the authors are listed on the last page of the
calendars, though as Platonides rightly pointed out, we forgot to
include a link to the page of the deed at creativecommons.org; this is
something we can improve this time.

I am not sure whether adding a link to a winning photo would be useful
at all, especially with long filenames or filenames written in
non-Latin alphabets (or even in Latin alphabets in countries which use
different ones); just imagine how long would typing those from your
keyboard take!

And by the way, the forward slashes // were just part of the design,
with no special meaning.

3. You cannot buy a copy of the 2012 calendars (I'm quite sure there
are no spare copies left at all), and I haven't heard about any plans
of selling the 2013s to the public. You'd be able to buy (or get)
those from a local chapter if they order more than they really need.

Last year, a Wikimedia Polska representative gave more than 10 copies
to the Wikimedia Foundation staff at the financial meeting in Paris;
I've heard they liked them :-) so if the Foundation would like to sell
the 2013s in their shop, they will be able to download the design file
from Commons -- we'll upload it there as soon as we have it ready,
just like I did with the one we used this year.

Hi Platonides,
thanks for the questions.

We have received three very simple drafts of the layout last week, and
as far as I remember, it's going to be very similar to the one we used
last year (see
<http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2011_calendar_(design_file).pdf>).

We have brought up the subject of weeks being culture-dependant to the
printing company (which will be also responsible for preparing the
layout) together with other requirements (licencing and
language-neutrality) that we gathered last year.

I guess we will be able to share a next version of the draft with the
wider community as soon as we get it from the printing company --
there isn't anything special to comment in those three drafts we
received, and I think it'd be better to wait and see how the design
will evolve, and then to comment on it.

Hi Karthik,
thanks for the message.

Indeed I was collecting some ideas for banners in August, but it
didn't work out in the end. However, we have been using some different
banners for a few countries:
#1: United States -- they are using a totally different phrase from
the rest of the world due to the heritage terminology differences;
#2: the Netherlands -- for a local Wiki Takes Gouda event and the
Openmonumentendag series of events;
#3: Israel -- advertising tours organised by Wikimedia Israel.

For the rest of the countries, we have been using the general banners,
and I do not think it's /that/ boring for our visitors; I check our
page views statistics every day (and log my actions at
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Odder/CentralNotice_log>), and
this week we haven't received less than 190k per day - which isn't
that bad, after all.

I plan to start the record banners (with the slogan "Participate in
the world's largest photo competition and help improve Wikipedia!") as
soon as we break 168,000 pictures uploaded in the competition -- which
is going to happen in about 4-5 days, as far as I see.

I am gathering translations of the slogan at
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2012/CentralNotice#Record_banner>
-- and by the way, we are still missing translations into Malayalam
and Telugu :-))

Thanks,

Re: [Wiki Loves Monuments] one more blocking

2012-09-12 Thread Tomasz W . Kozłowski
Hi Andrij,
I can sense a bit of misunderstanding here.

Noone is blocking WLM participants; it happens so that the e-mail
address used by the person that contacted you was globally as part of
a wider range block. The block was performed by Vituzzu on September
4, and also extended until 14:46 (UC) on September 19.

This block--as mentioned earlier by Federico--does not prevent account
creations (I double-checked that), but it might be some kind of an
error if the user cannot create an account on Commons.

In any case, I can create an account for her/him; please send me the
details (desired login and e-mail address) /off-list/ and I will
create the account as soon as possible.

Wiki Loves Monuments (in Russia) so far, it's greatly appreciated!

>From what I know--and I daresay I know a little bit more about that

countries--there are no lists of monuments in Russia from this year
that were published on any of the Wikimedia projects.

The only lists I managed to find are linked from
,
but they were created last year, are very well hidden and almost
completely empty, except for the few regions. There /might/ be some
lists on the Russian Wikipedia, but I cannot tell where as I am sadly
not able to read any Cyrillic at all.

As for the local organisers, I can only confirm that they do not take
part in any on-wiki discussion. Indeed, they are not active on this
list, either, and I haven't heard from them for a very (very!) long
time, even though I poked them many times in the past few weeks; my
inbox tells me that the latest e-mail I received from them was on May
25, 2012.

I also haven't heard about any plans to have a bot take care of the
uploads from Russia, so I guess you can continue doing your very
useful work if you still have the will and time to do so.

[Wiki Loves Monuments] Conference opportunities for WLM

2012-09-11 Thread Tomasz W . Kozłowski
Hi all,
I spent some time today looking at opportunities for us to promote
Wiki Loves Monuments on cultural heritage-related conferences (both
academic and those less professional, too). For now, it looks like
we've missed some great opportunities, because conferences generally
have early calls for papers :-(

In any case, I have only found three interesting conferences, all to
be held in Germany ("Summit of Newthinking", "Denkmal" and
"Re:Publica" in 2013), and would like to ask for your help.

Do you happen to know about any cultural heritage-related conferences
to be held in your country/neighbourhood? I think we'll be mostly
interested in those taking place in November/December/January (and
later, but those wouldn't be known yet). If so, please let us know!

Thanks in advance,

Re: [Wiki Loves Monuments] images categories at Commons

2012-09-07 Thread Tomasz W . Kozłowski
Hi Peter,
I have seen the topic of quality judgement of the WLM pictures being
brought up in several places (at the Featured Pictures Candidates page
on Commons, for instance), so just wanted to make it clear.

Obviously the jury members /could/ potentially notice that some of the
images are marked with some templates on Commons (if they ever have a
look there, that is), but I wouldn't call it a real danger for the
neutrality of their choices. Besides, there is no way that we could
control and influence the usual procedures of such a big community
like that of Commons, so we have to live with whatever they do.

As for the GLAM category, it is intended to gather pictures of GLAM
/buildings/ (both inside and outside), and not of the objects that are
located inside them. So if the picture shows only an object and not
the insides of the building (walls, ceilings, etc.), it should not
belong to that category.

Re: [Wiki Loves Monuments] images categories at Commons

2012-09-07 Thread Tomasz W . Kozłowski
Hi Peter,
incidentally, I have only created three of those four categories
today; they are there to gather--as one might guess by their
names--Featured pictures, Valued images and Quality images as defined
by the Commons community.

The local juries, and even the international one, are not related to
this community process, and the Commons community does not need to
wait for them to start or end their work; the juries also do not need
to take the judgement of the community into consideration at all.

The GLAM category has been created by Maarten, and is intended to
gather images of gallery, library, archives and museum buildings
uploaded as part of WLM; it is my understanding that everyone is
allowed to put his/her images there as long as they represent a GLAM
building (though Maarten might comment on this further).

After the end of the competition, images gathered in that category
will be reviewed by Europeana, and the winner will be awarded a
special prize sponsored by that organisation. More information on this
will be published on the international website on Sunday.

And by the way, if you're interested in all content from Wiki Loves
Monuments that has been highlighted by the Commons community in one
way or another, please have a look at
.

Thanks,

She did agree not to mention her name when the logo is used in
relation to the contest (and she did that in August 2011), but still
-- the licence chosen makes it clear that it is required to place a
link to its text whenever the image is used.

We cannot do that due to space limitation (and I am sure that a link
in the "alt" or "title" attribution wouldn't count), so we are still
violating its terms. Susana would probably need to release the logo
into the public domain (or we'll need to change the banners so they
link to the licence).

Re: [Wiki Loves Monuments] WLM banner problem

2012-09-04 Thread Tomasz W . Kozłowski
Hi Platonides and Pete,
in any case, we cannot use an image licenced under a Creative Commons
licence (which disqualifies almost all pictures from Wiki Loves
Monuments), as they all require an attribution (the name or pseudonym
of the author/copyright holder) and a URL to the licence text (not the
deed!).

(Please also note that Susana specifically mentioned she does not need
to be attributed to when the WLM logo is used in relation to the
contest; however, the licence still requires a working URL to its
text, so we are violating its requirements here, too.)

I agree that we (the Wikimedia community) should set an example in the
usage of freely licenced files, so I am thinking as what we should do
here.

We have two options: (1) remove the image created by Saibo from the
banners (but we should then also remove the WLM logo) or (2) add
working links to the images in the banners, and possibly also protect
their description pages; this would, however, mean that we'll need to
rebuild the templates so the links work for the files as well as for
the websites; to do that, we could only use the text as the link.

If you can point me to a requirement in the CC-BY 2.5 licence which
says that a website needs to attribute all images that link to it,
then I will be more than glad to do it :-) However, I would then
immediately link all images I created to the website of the
Foundation, and then sue them for violating the terms of the licence I
had chosen :-)

The way we use this picture does not differ too much of the way that
all images on the MediaWiki-powered wikis are used in, except for the
fact that we do not link to the file description page (because we link
to the national websites of the participating countries. In fact, this
does not differ /at all/ from the very popular usage of images like
[[File:Example.jpg|link=Wikipedia:Help]], so I think we should also go
after people using this, because they do not attribute the authors and
don't link to the file description pages where the attribution is
available.

(Being serious now.) We are calling the picture through an
HTML tag, and there is not enough place to attribute the author(s), so
the only way I can imagine this being done is through the "alt" and
"title" attributes, but this wouldn't really fit in the requirements
of the licence, would it?

(Note that the Wikimedia Foundation also violates the terms of the
various licences used by Wikimedia contributors when using images in
the fundraising banners, and I imagine that plenty people before us
did the same.)

I also cannot see a reason for the US to have a different banner from

As for the banners, we are currently using two different ones on all

and one only for the US ("Wiki Loves Monuments: Historic sites,

[Wiki Loves Monuments] CentralNotice slogan translation request (for a record banner)

2012-09-02 Thread Tomasz W . Kozłowski
Hello all,
with the contest going quite strong (over 15,2k pictures in total at
the moment) and our banners visible to hundreds of milions of people
from about 30 countries, it's the highest time to think about a banner
record -- a banner that will be pushed on-line when we break our
previous record of about 168k pictures uploaded as part of WLM.

I have brought this topic to this list last month, and there have been
some great suggestions of phrases to use. After some poking and
off-list consultations, I decided to go with a variant of Samat's
idea, which was also later revised by Lodewijk (thanks for the
efforts, guys!): "Take part in world's biggest competition and help
improve Wikipedia!".

Personally, I find this slogan quite good: it has a clear call to
action, mentions the goal of the contest (to help Wikipedia by
uploading photos), and will be true when we push it onto the projects
:-)) However, as this is quite an important change and might have a
huge impact, I would like to get a go-ahead from you--and also maybe
see some better ideas if you have them?

As mentioned above, I'd like to push the new banners on-line when we
break the record; which, in general estimates, might happen somewhere
between September 15 and September 20. This would give us about two
weeks to translate the phrases into the 37 languages we use for our
current banners.

If you'd like to help out and translate this slogan into your
language, I prepared a table similar to the one used before at
.
I know that MediaWiki is not the best tool to use for translating a
message, but there's currently no better way to do that; Commons does
not use the Translate extension yet, and I'll need to move those
translations to Meta (the admin-only MediaWiki namespace) anyway.

Thanks in advance for your translations and ideas!

Re: [Wiki Loves Monuments] Acceptable licences (UploadCampaigns options)

2012-09-01 Thread Tomasz W . Kozłowski
Hi Platonides,
thank you for your comment; indeed I haven't been clear enough. Your
wording is much more closer to the spirit that was behind the
decision, so I'll repeat it again:

* We /do/ accept content released under another free licences
acceptable on Commons, and will not be "disqualifing" or in any other
way removing from the contest any pictures that were released under
another licence (and possibly uploaded through another tools), but
* For the sake of simplicity & to make things easier for newcomers, we
are only offering CC-BY-SA as the deafult licence for the
UploadCampaigns.

And as for the other CC licences, we (myself and Basvb) have disabled
them when starting the campaigns, but looks like people mistakenly
turned them on again.

Again, Platonides, thanks for the corrections; it's appreciated!

[Wiki Loves Monuments] Acceptable licences (UploadCampaigns options)

2012-09-01 Thread Tomasz W . Kozłowski
Hi all,
I think we might have missed that topic before, so I'd like to raise
it now, when we are only at the start of the competition, and the
eventual losses are smaller :-)

One of the main ideas of Wiki Loves Monuments, and I think that we all
agree about that, is to make the competition as easy as possible for
the participants. In this spirit, several of our tools (including the
UploadCampaign) were designed, and we also agreed on some of our basic
principles at the 2011 meeting in May that some of you might have
participated in.

One of this principles was to choose only one licence acceptable for
all pictures uploaded as part of Wiki Loves Monuments--and, for
obvious reasons, this licence is the Creative Commons Share-Alike 3.0,
also knows as CC-BY-SA 3.0.

To achieve that goal, we have enabled only this licence in our
UploadCampaigns on Commons; so if you see it's there, please /do not/
change it or add other licences; this would only make things harder
for those of the participants that use the UploadWizard--and they are
mostly fresh newcomers, who have never heard of MediaWiki before.

This is more of a philosophy idea than a copyright-related thing,
because obviously nobody is going to check pictures uploaded by
Wikimedians with Commonist or other mass-upload tools; if you want to
read more about the original philosphy behind the competition, please
go to
;
it really is an essay worth reading.

All questions are, as always, welcome.
Thanks,
Tomasz

Hi Nkansah,
thanks for the message.

We achieve that through the CentralNotice feature available for Meta

read all about this notice system, and also see the currently running
campaigns at

Setting up a CentralNotice campaign does not require too much work
once you learn a bit about the software behind it. Unfortunately for
the planning Wikimedia chapter for Ghana (but probably more
fortunately for the readers of Wikipedia), the usage of CentralNotice
is rather limited, only to important notices for the readers of the
projects or for the community itself.

The usage guidelines for CentralNotice are available at

[Wiki Loves Monuments] The flow of the user (deadline coming)

2012-08-30 Thread Tomasz W . Kozłowski
Hello all,
so it's now less than 24 hours for some of the countries until the
start of the competition!

I am sure that you are all working hard on making the latest
adjustments and finishing all the preparations; in order to help you
do that, and with a special focus on our international audience, I
have prepared a short page about the flow of the user; how to direct
users and readers from a CentralNotice banner he or she will see on a
Wikimedia page to the lists of monuments and the UploadCampaign for
his/her country.

Please have a look at
<http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2012/Flow_of_the_user>.
This is a wiki, so if you see something missing from there, please be
bold and edit the page.

I would especially like to draw your attention to the contents of your
external website: make sure to have links to the relevant pages on
Wikipedia (lists of monuments, account creation guide, etc.) and
also--if you haven't done that yet--please create a short English
summary of the page, and let us know so we can update the
international English pages list at
<http://www.wikilovesmonuments.org/english-pages/>.

Thanks in advance,

Re: [Wiki Loves Monuments] Largest contest?

2012-08-30 Thread Tomasz W . Kozłowski
Hi WSC,
there is actually no "international" contest. You only take part in a
national contest, or some contests in plural if you happen to have
photographed monuments from more than a single country. And if you are
lucky enough, your photos will then be nominated by your national jury
to the international level, together with top-10 pictures from other
countries.

So, for example, if you happen to have pictures of monuments in Chile
and, say, Ukraine, then you will be able to take part in the national
contests in Chile and Ukraine--but if you have pictures from, for
instance, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Peru, they will not be part of
any competition, because there is no local WLM contest in those
countries.

You can, however, upload those pictures in a normal way to Commons (or
wait until next year in the hope that those countries you have
pictures from will join).

Re: [Wiki Loves Monuments] Largest contest?

2012-08-30 Thread Tomasz W . Kozłowski
Hi WSC,
the official number we are propagating to the media (and also the one
we used in our application for the Guinness Book of World Records) is
168,000. This would make Wiki Loves Monuments the biggest photo
competition in the world; if we're going to break this number this
year (and I am sure this is possible with twice as many countries),
then we'll definitely be the biggest competition.

PS Would this make Wiki Loves Monuments notable enough for an English
Wikipedia article? I know we already have articles in the French and
German Wikipedias ;-))

There are only five languages left that are missing translations:

[Wiki Loves Monuments] Piwik: questions and answers (Was: List of wlm websites including third-party content)

2012-08-29 Thread Tomasz W . Kozłowski
(I am starting a new thread to give proper answers and publicity to
questions asked by Strainu.)

Hi Strainu,
thanks for the questions; though I have to admit I am a bit troubled
about them appearing so late into the preparations, I also find them
very valid and well-aimed. I might not know all the answers, so I will
be leaving some of the questions untouched--maybe somebody else could
join in and help explain the situation here.

# Do you offer any guarantees on the uptime or stress-performance of the system?

No. Just like the Wikimedia Foundation does not guarantee the uptime
of its wikis, we cannot guarantee that our server will survive the
amount of traffic it will receive in the weeks to come. We are,
however, going to do our best to make it happen: the server, I
believe, is well-configured and we're going to start the CentralNotice
campaign with a visibility of 10% to see how this would affect the
load on the server. If it's OK, we'll be rising the visibility
sequentially to the expected 50% or higher--this would mean that our
banners will be visible in one of every two hits for Wikimedia wikis
in the participating countries.

# Do you offer any way to import past data from Google Analytics?

We can only do as much as the software will allow. Fortunately, there
is a Python script which can be used to import Google Analytics data
into Piwik -- please see
<http://piwik.org/blog/2012/08/google2piwik-update/> and
<http://clearcode.cc/offer/open-source-projects/google2piwik/> for
more information about it.

# Is there any guarantee that you're following data protection rules
in the country where the server is installed?

The server is controlled by Wikimedia Nederland, though it is
physically located in Germany (at least that's what a WHOIS query for
46.38.241.117 tells me). I do not have enough information to answer
this question--if there are some German lawyers here, I would welcome
any additional comments on this subject.

# Does that law even allow private persons to access the data (that's
especially doubtful, as it is probably in the EU)?

Just as with the question immediately above, I cannot answer this.
Though it might probably be helpful to mention that at least one EU
country that I know of (that is Poland) does allow private persons to
access such data--although under special circumstances, of course.

# What happens to the piwik installation after the contest ends?

I have to say that we haven't been thinking about this yet, for the
obvious reason that the contest has not even started. I believe that
we'll create some anonymous statistics for use for the next year
edition, and then the installation (together with the data) will be
removed. (At least this sound quite reasonable to me.)

And to answer your last question (about us using GA last year), I
think that this is simply because of the progress we've made with Wiki
Loves Monuments since last year. We are now more knowledgeable about
the organisational things than last year, and there are more people to
focus even on such relatively unimportant issues like the usage of
Google Analytics. Additionaly, I have to admit that I am especially
interested in that because of my experience with setting up a campaign
for Wikimedia Polska earlier this year, when I have been told that the
WMF does not allow linking to GA-based websites for fundraising
purposes.

And just to end this long e-mail, I'd like to make one this clear: not
setting up CentralNotice for Romania (and any other country) is out of
the question. If there will be no links in CentralNotice, this would
mean that the publicity for the contest would be much smaller, and
this would, in exchange, equal fewer pictures being uploaded--and this
is the last thing we would like to do.

Besides that, Wiki Loves Monuments is a federative contest, and we (by
"we" I mean the international team) can only advise you what to do and
what to avoid. In the end, the local organisers will be reponsible for
the contents of the linked websites, and also for the privacy and
security of their visitors' data.

Thanks

Re: [Wiki Loves Monuments] List of wlm websites including third-party content

2012-08-29 Thread Tomasz W . Kozłowski
Hi Strainu,
indeed there is no policy about (not) allowing links from
CentralNotice banners to websites using third party analytics systems,
just as I wrote in my offlist e-mail to you.

I can only provide you with an opinion of a Wikimedia Foundation Legal
and Community Advocacy team member, who is deeply uncomfortable about
us linking to websites using Google Analytics, and therefore giving
our users' very sensitive data to a third company for free.

I would very much like to avoid any controversies and arguments with
regard to this subject; we have installed and configured Piwik for
your use specifically to keep our users' data safe, and am (yet again)
urging you to do use this opportunity.

[Wiki Loves Monuments] Help capture world's cultural heritage (Was: Monuments lost since September 2011)

2012-08-26 Thread Tomasz W . Kozłowski
Hi there,
I thank Platonides' for starting a thread about creating a list of
monuments that were destroyed in the past two months; credit goes also
to Emijrp, who's [[Wikipedia:There is a deadline]] directly inspired
this idea.

We've been thinking about creating another banner for the
CentralNotice campaign, just like with WMF's fundraising, to involve
more people in the competition. Platonides' thread discussed creating
the list of endangered objects -- how about merging the two ideas into
one?

We'll create a short essay (five paragraphs at maximum, probably even
shorter) discussing the idea of [[Wikipedia:There is a deadline]] with
relation to cultural heritage objects, and have it translated into all
the languages of the participating countries. At the bottom of the
essay, we'll add a short list of cultural heritage objects that got
destroyed in the past twelve months (and only those), with respective
links to Wikipedia articles (or not - depending on the language). And
we'll link the essay on CentralNotice, using a catchy phrase that
mentions the danger that cultural heritage objects are in, and clearly
calls the viewers for an action (take picture & upload it onto
Commons).

How does this sound like?

Re: [Wiki Loves Monuments] Monuments lost since September 2011

2012-08-26 Thread Tomasz W . Kozłowski
Hi Platonides,
this is a great idea, but requires much work; we'd probably need to
make a crowd-sourcing effort to get at least a small list of such
objects. As far as I remember, Emijrp wrote a great essay on the
subject last year, so we'll only need to add the list.

I see that the Global Heritage Fund has identified such a list for
Syria (see
),
so maybe going in the direction of countries currently engaged in a
military conflict (Wikipedia provides us with a list at
)
might be a choice.

On the other hand, a Google search for "damaged cultural heritage" (in
Polish) directed me to an article on the 2012 Northern Italy
earthquakes (at
), so
maybe this direction good help us list some other damaged monuments,
too.

Just my three grosze.

Thanks,
Tomasz

[Wiki Loves Monuments] Jury tools

2012-08-24 Thread Tomasz W . Kozłowski
Hi there,
with September just about 6 days from now, it is time to start a
serious discussion about the tools we'd have for our jury members to
use in the process of choosing the best photos of the 2012 WLM.

This subject has been brought up in a discussion last month, and Nuno
Tavares was kind enough to share a tool that the Portuguese organisers
(ie. Nuno himself) prepared for their jury last year -- you can see it
in action at
.

I'd like to use this thread to collect some ideas about the tools you
use, and the ones that we still might create in the coming month. I
know that there were several tools people used last year, from the
automated ones (like Nuno's), through those semi-automated (like the
QInominator gadget somebody suggested to me recently), to those rather
manual (like the shell script we used in Poland last year).

So, are there some specific tools you used last year, or plan to use
this time? Please share your ideas & code here :-)

[Wiki Loves Monuments] Google Maps plugin for Wordpress

2012-08-24 Thread Tomasz W . Kozłowski
Hello all,
it has come to my attention (although I cannot find a mailing list
thread about it /yet/) that it was suggested that we should have a
Google Maps plugin for Wordpress displaying maps for a certain region
(a country/province/county/even municipality), with data being loaded
from our erfgoed database.

This being said, I have to admit that I am no good programmer, so I'd
like to point you to an existing example of such a solution, which was
developed last year by Nuno Tavares for use in the 2011 WLM in
Portugal -- see .
>From the source code I can see that the maps are being loaded in a
frame () with the help of a PHP script; but taking all the
technical details aside, this is a great tool with a wonderful
potential to be used on the national sites of the participating
countries.

So, my question here is: have you heard of such a plugin (it's always
safe to ask, I presume :-)? If it doesn't exist yet, is there a
volunteer here who might be willing to spend some time developing it?
(I have no idea how hard it might be to create it.) What do you think
about such a tool -- would you, as a national WLM organiser, use it on
your website? Please let me know!

Thanks,
Tomasz

Re: [Wiki Loves Monuments] September per time zones

2012-08-24 Thread Tomasz W . Kozłowski
Hi Yaroslav,
the problem we face here is that there are no technical means to use
this scheme.

Firstly, there is only one UploadCampaign for the US (same for Canada,
the Netherlands, and Russia) - and secondly, the current CentralNotice
and GeoNotice systems do not (truly) enable us to set up different
campaigns for respective administrative divisions of a country (in
this case, mainly the US and Canada).

And just like you wrote, it would be a nightmare to track
post-deadlines pictures: how would you tell if a user uploaded a
picture from California or from New York? What would matter: the
location of the object (based on geo-coordinates and GPS data, for
example) or the real-life location of the user at the time of upload?
;-))

I believe that besides the countries you mentioned - Canada, France,
the Netherlands, Russia and the US - also Mexico uses different time
zones. (Any countries I missed?) I would love to hear from people from
those countries what they think as to what should be done here.

2012-08-24 Thread Tomasz W . Kozłowski
Yaroslav,
there hasn't been to much discussion about this topic, so I went ahead
and suggested my plan to you ;-)) But obviously it would be nice for
the countries to decide by themselves when they want to turn on the
UploadCampaigns and CentralNotice banners (though it will have to be
communicated to us beforehand, as there aren't so many active Meta
admins here).

I would disagree about having the same time for starting and closing
the contest. Our goal is to have as many pictures as possible -- in
order to get as many new editors as possible -- and human beings have
this strange habit of doing things at the latest possible moment.
We've seen it last year, when -- as Romaine wrote in another thread
recently -- about 25% of the total number of uploads came in on the
last day.

It would be a great loss if we disabled the campaign on, say, October
1 00:00 Eastern Daylight Time (this is the timezone for the US states
of Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and the Canadian
provinces of Ontario and Quebec), when there could be plenty of people
from the other US timezones wanting to upload pictures /at the latest
possible time/.

Adding some three or so hours for people to use in order to be "fair"
to the other countries is not really a big deal, but there is
potentially much to loose (in number of pictures that wouldn't make it
to the contest).

The problem we have with Russia is that the scope of the project is
