[Wikimedia-l] Another goodbye

Dear friends and colleagues,

I’ve had the amazing privilege of serving this movement in a staff capacity
for the past 4 ½ years, but I’ve now decided to move on from my role at the
Wikimedia Foundation.

Transparency, integrity, community and free knowledge remain deeply
important to me, and I believe I will be better placed to represent those
values in a volunteer capacity at this time. I am and will always remain a
Wikimedian, so you'll still see me around the projects (User:Seeeko),
hopefully with renewed energy and joy in volunteering.

This movement has become my home in so many unexpected ways, and I’m truly
honored to have learned from so many of you. It was an amazing experience
to have partnered with smart, bold, and dedicated community folks to
experiment with projects like Teahouse, IdeaLab, Inspire, Individual
Engagement Grants, and Reimagining Grants. I’ve seen you create some really
incredible content, ideas, tools, programs, processes, committees and
organizations, all in the service of free knowledge.

I expect my last day to be Thursday, February 25th. I have full confidence
in Maggie Dennis's abilities to lead the Community Engagement Department,
and I trust that my team will remain available to support the community’s
needs for grants and other resources throughout this time of transition.

Some quick answers to your questions:

1. The initial results of the Inspire Campaign themselves were largely very
good (see:
https://blog.wikimedia.org/2015/05/28/what-we-learned-from-the-inspire-campaign/).
As for the projects funded as a result of the campaign, though, they're
still running and so we expect to have analysis of their impact completed
towards the end of this fiscal year (by June 2016), after all grantees have
reported back.

[Wikimedia-l] Thoughts on carrying the Wikimania conversation forward

Hi folks,

Just letting you know that I’m reading the recent Wikimania-focused mailing
list threads with interest, as the Community Resources team is now on-point
for funding and coordinating WMF’s involvement in Wikimania.

A couple of first thoughts to share:

1. WMF has learned from past Wikimanias that we need to do our
due-diligence on venue etc before the host team and location is announced.
One reason for this is that we have a limited budget for Wikimania, and
doing a site visit before the host is finalized helps us ensure that we’re
able to support the costs of the event in a given location. Ellie Young is
headed to Montreal in 2 weeks and based on what she learns from that visit,
we’re aiming to give the steering committee what they need to confirm
selection before the end of 2015. That said, we recognize that
communications around this haven’t gone as planned, and we are looking into
improvements…(see thought 2)

2. We, too, would like to see the movement building towards a shared vision
of Wikimania! It is great to see so many people, in true Wikimedian-style,
thinking about big-picture questions of participation, representation, and
content at Wikimania. Knowing that mailing list discussions have their
limits, here’s how my team is thinking about collecting feedback more
systematically for this going forward:

We’ll be launching a community consultation in November to help build
towards more shared vision and process improvements for Wikimania 2018 -
2021. Two key inputs we’ve been thinking about using to launch that
conversation are 1) responses from the survey of last Wikimania’s attendees
and 2) the steering committee’s recommendation for host selection going
forward.

We’re still regrouping from the latest Resources Consultation, and will
begin planning for a Wikimania Consultation next week, so after that we’ll
be able to share more information about what this consultation will look
like and the exact timeline. Meanwhile, suggestions and open questions that
you’d like to see resolved via this consultation are most welcome in this
thread. My hope is that a consultation will help broaden participation in
these conversations and get us from input to action.

Hi all,

I'm excited to announce that we've got a new Program Officer for Individual
Grants. Please join me in congratulating Marti Johnson as she transitions
to this role!

Marti joined WMF as Project Coordinator in the Grantmaking and Programs
(later turned Community Engagement) department in September 2014. She
quickly demonstrated that she’s a strategic thinker who brings deep respect
for communities, a facility for organizing systems that foster creativity
and collaboration, and the warmth and generosity needed to support
individuals to do their best work.

In her new role, Marti will be responsible for the Individual Engagement
Grants and Travel and Participation Support programs. She reports directly
to me.

I’m delighted to have Marti move into the Community Resources team to put
her talents to work, particularly for supporting our Individual Engagement
Grantees and taking IEG to the next level over the coming year. Among other
things, Marti will be working on creating more robust mentorship systems
and a broader network to support grantees, while continuing to offer direct
support herself to the IEG grantees, proposers, and committee.

We’ve begun a transition period in which Marti is working to hand-off her
role in supporting Luis and the Community Engagement team while beginning
to assume her new responsibilities in Community Resources. Marti has
already taken on responsibility for Travel and Participation Support, this
week she will be onboarding our new crop of Inspire grantees in IEG, and
over the course of May I’ll be handing all day-to-day operations for IEG to
her as well. More information will be coming from Lynette later this month
about the backfill for Marti’s former Project Coordinator position. Many
thanks to Lynette for bringing Marti to WMF and supporting her move to this
new role :)

Here’s a bit more about Marti, for those of you who haven’t yet had a
chance to get to know her:

Inspired by a senior paper on agrarian community in American literature,
Marti took her first job after college coordinating Community Supported
Agriculture on an urban organic farm.   A year of service as an AmeriCorps
volunteer led to a decade managing collaboratively driven resource
conservation projects on California farmlands.   She gained extensive
experience with grants management, including proposal and report writing,
grantmaking, contract oversight and coordination of budgets ranging from
hundreds to millions of dollars.  Marti specialized in facilitating
community-based processes and played a lead role in coordinating a
private-public alliance which was awarded California’s highest honor for
environmental and economic leadership.  She gained a reputation for
building meaningful collaboration--and among other tools, she relied
heavily on wikis she built with MediaWiki software to do it.  After moving
to San Francisco, Marti was very excited to join WMF and offer skills in
community coordination, collaborative strategy-building and grants
management in the context of Wikimedia projects.  In her free time, Marti
likes to backpack, write and take long walks in Golden Gate Park.  She has
recently been working toward a goal to read through the complete works of
Shakespeare (about 75% complete!) and welcomes read-aloud collaborators.

As WMF continues to focus on integration as a major theme in 2015, we'll
certainly be giving the big picture of all our grantmaking structures,
impact assessments, etc some further thought. Any updates to grant programs
would happen in consult with the committees and broader community, so you
can expect that the program officers and I will be having more
conversations on this topic with you all over the coming year (no sudden
changes, lots of measured thought).

Unfortunately, Anasuya Sengupta -- our beloved leader of grantmaking

will be leaving us due to personal health concerns at the end of

will invite you soon to celebrate her time with us, her work at the
WMF
and
the deep insight she brought to the Foundation. We are saddened to
see
her
go. The team she has nurtured will provide an important foundation
for
our
upcoming work.

Siko Bouterse will move up to lead the day-to-day work of the
Grantmaking
team as Director of Community Resources, supervising all department
Grant
programs and the Global South strategy. Siko has been instrumental in
innovating programs at the WMF, including initiatives like the
Teahouse[1]
and the IdeaLab[2] combining vision with strong support for volunteer
community, tough decision making, and great project management
skills.

These changes are an opportunity to improve the coordination of our

During March we will be running an Inspire Campaign to proactively source
and support new projects aimed at addressing Wikimedia’s gender gap:

Our goals are two-fold:

1. Experiment with running scalable themed campaigns in IdeaLab to incubate
more initiatives aimed at having a focused collective impact.

2. Proactively support community initiatives aimed at increasing gender
diversity in contributors to, and content of, Wikimedia projects.

Why are we piloting with a gender gap theme? A variety of initiatives are
needed to increase diversity and reduce systemic bias on Wikimedia
projects, but so far these haven’t emerged organically at scale. Without
taking time to focus together on increasing gender diversity in our content
and contributors, this trend is likely to continue. WMF’s Individual
Engagement Grants and Project and Event Grants could support such
initiatives, and we're interested to learn how specifically inviting
proposals in this area can have an impact.

March is WikiWomen’s History Month, and it’s a great time to focus extra
attention and energy together on addressing the gender gap.

We need your help! We’re looking for volunteers to join our team in the
following roles:

1. Community organizers: Spread the the word about the campaign to your
local communities, maintain a friendly space in IdeaLab, facilitate
development of ideas and project teams. (March)

2. Translators: Translate campaign content and gender gap resources into
your language. This is a global campaign, so all languages are welcome.
Some languages we’d particularly like to be able to support include:
Spanish, Arabic, Malayalam, Telugu, and Ukrainian. (February and March)

3. Funding committee: Facilitate development of ideas to grant proposals,
support idea-creators to improve proposals, greenlight projects for funding
via either Individual Engagement Grants or Project Event Grants. (March
and April)

Hi Jens,
Some quick stats:

*PEG handles about 20 proposals per month

*IEG handles about 30 submissions per round (of those requested, we
ultimately funded 7 projects in the latest round)
*2 program officers, 1 grants administrator, and several other staffers are
advising or otherwise touching some portion of these grants to a much
smaller degree. 16 members on each committee (give or take a couple
members) are involved in reviewing proposals.

   You certainly put a lot of time and effort into being wrong. Any first
  year
   undergraduate writing course will tell you that to make an argument you
   need to address the counter-arguments, which you have failed even to
   mention. Diversity of contributors isn't a social justice goal, or
 even a
   cultural engineering goal. It is aimed squarely at increasing the
  diversity
   and caliber of content. Not only does the small proportion of women
 mean
   that millions of them with huge amounts of expertise to contribute are
   unheard, it also means that their perspective and approach are
   underrepresented or missing entirely.
  
   And yes, the same is true for others - not only African-Americans, but
   Africans. Not only people of Indo-Asian descent, but the people of
 the
   Indian subcontinent itself. This is not an American movement, yet the
   global south is deeply under-represented, and the WMF has been
 working
   for years to address this issue. This is, again, because diversity of
   contributors matters for the breadth and depth of coverage in our
  projects.
   The goal of the Wikimedia movement is the sum of all human knowledge,
 not
   the sum of knowledge held by white men between 15 and 35 living in
 Europe
   and North America.

community input that we rely on to assess which grants should move forward.
But in addition to the actual campaign itself, we need to bake in enough
time to prepare for it beforehand and get funded projects started
afterwards. There is significant staff effort behind the scenes for any
grantmaking we do, and in my experience even quick pilots take time to prep
and wrapup.

I'm hearing your concerns loud and clear, still, and agree it will be
interesting to see how many truly time-sensitive requests will come up
during this period. If the campaign is deemed a success worth repeating and
we also find we're over-stretching those involved (staff and volunteers)
because many non-theme focused projects need to be concurrently considered
(this is a big concern for me, and something we'll be keeping a close eye
on), that could be data-driven rationale for resourcing grantmaking
differently in next year's annual plan.

 than any other program having been run by WMSE, there must now be between
 30-50 coverages in local and nationwide papers and radio stations.  And the
 funding body saw this as a thundering success, and has given even more
 funding for a second year. And then something happened as a result from
 this media coverage, more female editors has now a year later turned up!

Thanks for sharing this example, Anders. We're definitely going to learn a
lot from this experiment, as I am from this discussion, and will be sharing
back findings too :)

Your point about media interest as well as longer term impact is super
important. While we do need to be able to demonstrate some short-term
impact, I also think that for many of the grants we make the impact can
really only seen much more clearly in the longer term. So following up well
after the pilot is over will also be important.

this is increased media coverage which in turn could result in longer term

Great question. Current thinking is to do the usual announcing on mailing
lists, blog/social media, village pumps, etc, as well as experimenting with
running Central Notice banners. Would like to attract folks from various
wikis who have interest in this theme and ability to lead a project in
their community, beyond the usual (relatively small) slice who regularly
participate in lists like these or in the usual grantmaking discussions on
meta-wiki. And although outside media could help bring total newbies to
contribute ideas, discussion, and other forms of participation, it is
pretty darn important to have at least 1 experienced Wikimedian on a funded
team in order to lead and execute a useful community project, so
in-movement (particularly on-wiki) promotion is a priority. Any
thoughts/suggestions would be welcome!

get a few months break from reviewing new proposals. But you will still be
needed on the PEG and IEG committees to follow up with existing IEG and PEG
grantees, reading reports and offering support and advice to them as those
projects continue to move forward.

As IEG and PEG committee members, we hope you will support this experiment
by spreading the word in your communities, mentoring projects and grantees,
and helping us learn how we can improve the campaign model. We will be
publicizing the campaign in January and February with the aim to launch the
campaign March 4th and to make decisions on grants in April.

(what
we do is cool! Join us!) tends to be more successful than telling them
they
are not allowed to do other stuff (we won't fund you at all unless
you do
this specific theme).

Prioritisation sounds great, but that only works that way if you have
one
clearly defined pool of resources, that you can actually control.
What do
you think is the major bottle neck in organizing activities in the
Wikimedia movement? In my experience, that is not money, or even WMF
staff
capacity (even though it is a limiting factor sometimes), but the
primary
bottle neck is volunteer organizers (or editors). And volunteer time
is
not
a resource you can easily 'control'. If you want to influence it, the
most
effective way is by persuading the volunteers why another angle is
more
interesting, more fun, more effective.

an Individual Engagement Grant[2]. The deadline to submit a proposal is
September 30.

To help you turn your ideas and projects into successful proposals, we’re
hosting a few IdeaLab Proposal Clinics in Hangouts and IRC this month.[3]
The first one took place on September 16. Newcomers had a chance to talk to
current and past grantees, as well as WMF Grantmaking staff, to workshop
ideas and strengthen their proposals.

If you have an idea you would like to submit, but feel unsure about how to
draft or finalize your proposal, join a session! There are three events
left before the deadline:

Just a reminder that we're hosting the first of 4 Individual Engagement
Grants proposal clinic Hangouts today, and it will begin a few hours from
now.

What: WMF grantmaking staff and IEG committee members will spend an hour
answering specific questions about IEGrant proposals, helping people create
their proposals, etc.  If you'd like to get or give advice about grant
proposals for this program in real time, please join us!

[Wikimedia-l] Reimagining Travel and Participation Support grants

Hi all,
We've published an analysis of the Travel and Participation Support
Program.[1]

This program is a partnership between WMF, Wikimedia Deutschland, and
Wikimedia Switzerland to fund travel for Wikimedians to attend
non-Wikimedia events.[2]  After 2 years of operation, we wanted to learn
what's working and what's not.

Some key findings from the report include:

Opportunities:

*Travel funding provides opportunities to deeply connect participants to
the movement and each other.
*Participation Support demonstrates an opportunity to reach a range of new
Wikimedia grantees, including women and participants in the Global South.

Recommendations:

*The volume of requests and grants made in this program must be increased
in order to fully realize its potential; the scale of use is too small with
the current scope and setup.
*Program pages should be redesigned for ease-of-use and if possible with a
bit of joy.
*Publicizing the program should be a priority; blogs, social media, and
on-wiki promotional campaigns to spread awareness of the program could help
boost the number of requests.
*Simpler application methods should be investigated in order to keep the
process open to a range of applicants.
*Scope expansion for the program should be considered, particularly to
include Wikimedia events.

We hope to use the data in this report as a starting point to reimagine
if/how we can better support Wikimedians to travel and participate in

extension for MediaWiki makes the use of this script online
increasingly possible. Because Benny’s project will rely on the
availability of this extension on all Javanese Wikimedia projects, the
start of this grant depends on the WMF Internationalization team’s
completing its scheduled deployment in coming months. We would also
like to see more discussion and input from other members of the
Javanese community demonstrating the potential of this project, and
will be working with Benny to figure out how to support those
conversations while we await the deploy.

The new grantees will begin work on their projects in the coming weeks
and they’ll be sharing progress and learnings with us all along the

Hi all,

Please join me in welcoming Ellie Young, who is taking on the role of
Conference Coordinator as an annual contract with WMF.[1]

As you may know, WMF's support for Wikimania in recent years has been
spread across a variety of staff members who have other core
responsibilities.  With this new contract, we're creating a single point of
contact to act as liaison between WMF and the Wikimania organizing team, to
ensure that we're able to provide the host team with focused support where
help from WMF is needed.

Ellie brings with her a lot of experience in event planning for open
culture communities.  She worked as Executive Director of USENIX
Association for over 20 years, where she and her team supported several
international conferences hosted by volunteers each year.[2]  She also
currently serves on The Ada Initiative's Board of Advisors and has been an
activist for the democratization of educational materials most of her life.

Fun things we’ve learned about Ellie:  Both sets of her grandparents helped
build the Panama Canal, and each generation since has had a pilot or two
doing transits of the ships. She has been to every country in Latin America
and the Caribbean except Brasil. You can often catch her hiking in the SF
East Bay Hills with her adorable mini-poodle, Jack.

As Conference Coordinator, Ellie will be facilitating and supporting the
work of the Wikimania host team and making sure there is good continuity
and knowledge-transfer as the conference moves to new hosts year-over-year.
 She is based in the San Francisco Bay Area and will be sometimes working
from the SF office (sitting on the 3rd floor near HR). Ellie would like to
hear from you on all things Wikimania, so please do stop by or email her
anytime!

Huge thanks to all staff and volunteers who helped us craft this role and
interview candidates.

  recently negotiated with CIS in India.
  * Siko is taking over responsibility from Asaf for all funding for
  individuals. This will make it possible for us to grow our individual
  grant-making, and it will also free up Asaf to do more small
  organization development. Siko will also be responsible for
  documentation and analysis of all grants except the ones funded by the
  FDC. It?s important for us to grow grantmaking to individuals because
  individuals create 99% of the value in the projects. They do it with
  practically no funding, but in some cases a little money will be able
  to make something great happen.

individuals.  This allows us to accomplish the goals of narrowing focus (on
WMF's capacity as grant-makers, in this case), while finding new ways to

The August edition of the Fellowship News is now available on meta-wiki:

Project highlights in this issue include:

Dispute Resolution Project - Steven Zhang compiled results of the August
trial at the Dispute Resolution Noticeboard, and a Request for Comment on
an easier way to file dispute resolution requests is underway.

WikiWomen's Collaborative Project - Sarah Stierch and volunteer WikiWomen
around the world launched the WikiWomen's Collaborative, a social media
initiative connecting women who currently edit or aspire to edit Wikipedia.

Help Pages Redesign Project - Peter Coombe completed a redesign of English
Wikipedia's main help page and usability tests are being run to compare
users' experiences with it. Results will be compiled and a redesign
proposal will be brought to the community for discussion.

Small Wiki Editor Engagement Project - Tanvir Rahman launched the new help
page system on Bangla Wikipedia with pages that teach editors about new
article creation and other popular editing activities. Metrics are still
being collected but it appears article creation has already nearly doubled.

Teahouse Project - The Teahouse team refined automated invites and finished
improvements that surface hosting activity. The Teahouse pages are going
through a redesign to simplify the space for new editors, and we're looking
at creating a new volunteer maitre d role.

It is my great pleasure to introduce two new Community Fellows in the
Wikimedia Fellows Program: Tanvir Rahman and Steven Zhang.

Tanvir Rahman is a Wikimedian who serves the movement locally and
globally, both on- and off-wiki. Tanvir has been an active editor of
Bengali Wikipedia since 2009, he holds administrator rights on
multiple projects and he was elected a steward in 2011. He also
volunteers on the Small Wiki Monitoring Team, the Countervandalism
Network, as an OTRS agent, and is a translator for translatewiki.
Tanvir helped found Wikimedia Bangladesh and organizes local outreach
activities to raise awareness for Wikimedia and bring new editors to
the projects.

In his fellowship project, Tanvir will be experimenting with on-wiki
strategies to encourage and grow the editing community on small
language versions of Wikipedia, with specific focus on the Bengali
Wikipedia. Smaller projects have different needs and challenges than
the large language communities and may require different approaches to
engage with editors. By focusing on a community like Bengali
Wikipedia, which has about 50 active editors per month and sees 10 new
editors per month, Tanvir hopes to learn more about the basic editing
infrastructure needed to encourage new editors in new or small-scale
projects.

Steven Zhang is a Wikipedian with a passion for resolving on-wiki
disputes and helping others do the same. He has been contributing to
the English Wikipedia since 2008 and has been particularly active in
dispute resolution forums, including the Wikipedia Mediation Cabal.
Steven is studying a Certificate IV in Mediation at Open Colleges, and
over the past year he has made it his mission as a volunteer to
recruit more editors to join dispute resolution efforts. In 2011, he
helped create the dispute resolution notice board, an entry point for
mediating disputes on the English Wikipedia. Steven has noted that
there aren’t enough active participants to resolve all of the disputes
that arise on Wikipedia each day, and he believes that dispute
resolution processes could be streamlined to make them more accessible
and efficient to all editors who need them.

For his fellowship project, Steven will be analyzing community
feedback and dispute resolution activity in order to build a deeper
understanding of what is effective and what needs improvement in the
current systems. He will also be developing a guide for new editors
who want to get involved in resolving on-wiki disputes.
