[Wikimediaau-l] Fwd: ERA journal list on Wikidata

2014-02-27 Thread John Vandenberg
Most Australian academics will be familiar with ERA and its journal list.

There is a bit of background available at wikipedia.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Excellence_in_Research_for_Australia

The specs for the next ERA are in draft at the moment.

The Australian Research Councils list of journals only contains ERA ID,
journal title (and native title where the English title is different), and
ISSNs.

Wikidata already includes properties which institutions can utilise to
better describe these journals, such as editor, publisher, establishment
year, ISO 4 abbreviation, Bluebook abbreviation (for Law journals),
preceeding journal, SCOPUS journal identifier.

These properties are being populated from Wikipedia by my bot, but if
anyone is interested I could use help in defining useful properties and
populating them.

Dear all,

We wanted to wish you a happy holiday season (for those of you on
holidays) and a happy 2014!

2014 is an important year for SFD and Digital Freedom Foundation, the
non-profit behind it. We have now extended our celebrations to four in a
year as the Free Software philosophy extends to more and more places. We
have also merged one of our side activities, Greenboard, which is
building a totally Free and Open Source curriculum to meet a tremendous
need for technology for everybody and especially the unprivileged groups
at the lowest possible cost. While currently only available in Chinese
(as it is where it is developed) we are slowly translating it into English.

So to be short we will be celebrating the following events this year:
- Education Freedom Day: Saturday January 18th
- Hardware Freedom Day: Saturday March 15th
- Culture Freedom Day: Saturday May 17th
- Software Freedom Day: Saturday September 20th

You can of course find more information on the related websites[1] or
ask us questions through the appropriate mailing lists[2].

Last but not least, we are headed towards our tenth year of existence
and this would not have been possible without you and without all the
supporting organizations which have followed us around the years, namely
Canonical, Google, Linode, the FSF and FSFE, Creative Commons, FreeBSD,
Joomla!, the Open Clipart Library, Foundation Ceata, Linux Magazine,
Linux Journal, Ubuntu User, Admin magazine and smart developer.

This year we will also try to raise more funds and hopefully hire
someone to help us full time as it is starting to be a busy
all-year-round activity. Hopefully this will make us more active and
responsive to all the requests we are getting and better overall.

So thank you all and let's make 2014 unforgettable!

Kind regards,

Frederic Muller

[Wikimediaau-l] Fwd: [Wikimedia-l] Reimagining Travel and Participation Support grants

2013-12-11 Thread John Vandenberg
-- Forwarded message --
From: "Siko Bouterse"
Date: Dec 12, 2013 7:15 AM
Subject: [Wikimedia-l] Reimagining Travel and Participation Support grants
To:
Cc:

Hi all,
We've published an analysis of the Travel and Participation Support
Program.[1]

This program is a partnership between WMF, Wikimedia Deutschland, and
Wikimedia Switzerland to fund travel for Wikimedians to attend
non-Wikimedia events.[2] After 2 years of operation, we wanted to learn
what's working and what's not.

Some key findings from the report include:

Opportunities:

*Travel funding provides opportunities to deeply connect participants to
the movement and each other.
*Participation Support demonstrates an opportunity to reach a range of new
Wikimedia grantees, including women and participants in the Global South.

Recommendations:

*The volume of requests and grants made in this program must be increased
in order to fully realize its potential; the scale of use is too small with
the current scope and setup.
*Program pages should be redesigned for ease-of-use and if possible with a
bit of joy.
*Publicizing the program should be a priority; blogs, social media, and
on-wiki promotional campaigns to spread awareness of the program could help
boost the number of requests.
*Simpler application methods should be investigated in order to keep the
process open to a range of applicants.
*Scope expansion for the program should be considered, particularly to
include Wikimedia events.

We hope to use the data in this report as a starting point to reimagine
if/how we can better support Wikimedians to travel and participate in
events. Please have a look at the findings and share your thoughts and
ideas on the talk page:

https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Participation_talk:Support/Analysis

Warm regards,
Siko

Hi all,

The fundraising team is kicking off our year-end campaign in the US, UK,
Canada, Australia, and New Zealand at midnight UTC on December 3, 2013. SF
staff - banners are going up in a few minutes.

Check out our latest banner.

http://en.wikipedia.org/?banner=B13_1202_clr_blgs_enYY&reset=1

Quick reminder: We have been running banners at a low-level since the start
of the fiscal year in July. In that time, we have continuously tested new
banners to find improvements that will allow us to reduce the number of
banners people see each year. This is our first year experimenting with
year-round fundraising. We've already raised over $13 million USD -- which
is roughly equal to about how much we raised after our first full week of
the 2012 fundraising campaign. During this year-end campaign, banners will
be displayed to 100% of readers.

*A few key facts:*

   - Amount raised in testing prior to the year-end campaign: Roughly $13.5
   million USD
   - Campaign goal: $20 million USD
   - Banners will run to 100% of English readers in the US, UK, Canada,
   Australia, and New Zealand
   - Previous donors will receive a reminder to donate email during the
   month of December
   - Mobile banners will be displayed in the US
   - We will run campaigns in other countries and languages in 2014

If you spot any errors, please let us know on the meta talk
page.
Feel free to ask questions there as well.

I've been preparing a blog post about the anniversary and the contests, it
would be great if someone could take a look and possibly expand. If
possible it would be great to have an image of the Wikisource logo with a
"10" written on it. Any takers?

@James, Craig: Have WM-DC and WM-AU decided which kind of involvement do
they wish in the contest or if an independent event will be held? So far on
en-ws I have seen that only WM-UK is involved offering prizes:

A WMAU response endorsing the ADA submissions would be good. We
should start a draft in someone's userspace and take it from there.

Also relevant is the IP chapter of TPP which was leaked yesterday by Wikileaks

The raw text is here:

Many online commentators are equating it with SOPA, etc., as it
contains many of the same provisions.

** apologies for cross-posting **

Hi folks,

Following on from the THATCamp in Sydney last week a Google group has been
set up by Yvonne Perkins so locals and visitors can join in on meetups.

"Hello and welcome to the Sydney Digital Humanities Meetup group. The
primary purpose of this group is to organise and announce regular Digital
Humanities meetups in the Sydney region. At these meetups we share the
projects we are working on, new things we have learned and tease out
problems we may be having in our research. This group is also a place to
announce other digital humanities events and news that are happening in
Sydney. If you don't live in Sydney you are welcome to come to our events
next time you visit.

Feel free to contribute an announcement or comment about Digital Humanities
to this group. Posts will be lightly moderated.

If you have not already done so we recommend that members of this group
also join the Australasian Association of Digital Humanities group - aaDH:
Digital Humanities. This group keeps members informed of all the goings on
in Digital Humanities in Australia and New Zealand."

Visit this group at http://groups.google.com/group/sydney-dh-meetup.

Next one is mooted late November early December at University of Sydney.

Good wishes, Ingrid

[Wikimediaau-l] Fwd: [Wikisource-l] Wikisource 10th aniversary proposal : Proofreading contest

2013-10-31 Thread John Vandenberg
Great concept.

I think this would a great little project, and worth the expense for the
WMAu chapter.

I helped run a small wikisource competition with Wikimedia Indonesia (esp.
Ivonne & Siska) to transcribe a 550 page dictionary, and found it to be
very successful, but does require quite a bit of time to run and help
newbies.

Ill write up a proposal if another WMAu member is willing to second and
help organise the competition in Oz.

Talking with some members of Amical Wikimedia about how to celebrate the
10th aniversary, one of the proposals was to organize a proofreading
contest.

Basically, we would select some books for the participants to proofread and
validate and they would gather points for each page without errors. The
person with the most points would win a Kindle donated by Amical Wikimedia.

However, we have been thinking that with the help of some members of the
Wikisource User Group and other Chapters, then we could escalate it to an
international proofreading contest, instead of being just regional. I guess
ideally we would need 3 kindles and at least a volunteer from each
community to organize it.

What do you think of the idea? Would you or any chapter that would like to
get involved?

Fwiw, it is possible to add trove references.

1. Open the transclusion dialog

I agree that $1 million would be way too high as standard operating
overhead. However they are reporting that FDC overhead is only USD
538,000, and roughly half of that is a once-off program startup
expense.

https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/FDC_portal/Annual_report_on_the_Funds_Dissemination_Committee_process_2012-2013#Highlights_in_numbers_from_the_first_year

"US$537,911 was spent on support and overhead costs as follows:
US$175,835 on personnel, US$65,424 on face-to-face deliberations
(travel, venue, accommodation), US$2,466 on operating expenses, and
US$294,186 on one-time expenses covering The Bridgespan Group's
consultancy fees during the creation of the FDC process."

It would be nice to see what that US$175,000 on personnel includes, as
there are a lot of related expenses that may not have been included.

The WMF currently has nine staff in the team according to

https://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Staff#Grantmaking

There is a breakdown of which staff are involved in which programs here:

https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grantmaking_and_Programs#Grantmaking

It looks like Katy Love (started in January 2013), Adele Vrana
(started in October 2012) and Anasuya Sengupta (started in July 2012)
are the main staff working on FDC, with Winifred Olliff split between
many programs so she is probably only dedicated to the FDC process
during the periods of high workload.

A quick check of my emails shows that other people who have worked on
he FDC includes: Jessie Wild, Christine Bocknek, Garfield Byrd, Barry
Newstead, Heather Walls, Tilman Bayer, Melanie Brown & Asaf Bartov.
And of course Sue has spent a lot of time on this, and Erik has
chipped in occasionally.

There is also the FDC ombudsmen election. Incorporating the FDC
ombudsmen into the board election cause quite a bit of unplanned
trouble, as the software was only intended to run one election at a
time.

Then there is the costs of chapter staff, and the many volunteer hours
thrown into it.

There is also the time that WMF spent on their application and
management of the FDC grant to WMF, which could be excluded from 'the
cost of FDC' with some interesting definitions.

Hello lovely Melbourne friends!

We've got an exciting event coming up at the end of October, a weekend
long hackathon bringing together medical researchers and people with
clever techy skills to tackle some real problems in health research.

Example problems include:
- I use multiple online data sets but I don't have a good way of
knowing when I have looked at all the available information. I'd like
an intuitive search panel that allows me to select exactly what I
need, and report back all the relevant results
- I generate vast quantities of data; I would like a visualisation
panel that lets me quickly and easily compare multiple data sets
against each other
- I regularly search for information about disease occurrence; I'd
like a tool that reports on aspects of previous research, e.g.
statistical significance, number of patients, number

Or you might just do an exploration of an interesting dataset without
a fixed goal. So if you are great at data visualisation, data
management or analytics (or have other great skills like data
journalism and can coax the story out of a dataset) we'd love to see
you there!

You can find some more details here:
http://au.okfn.org/2013/09/21/healthhack/, and register here:

There is only two days left in the 'week'. What can we do to participate?

My idea for an international project is to set up a latin transcription of

I havent looked carefully for an online text, but it isnt immediately
obvious that it has been transcribed already.

Hello community,
this is to inform you that in response to the trademarking of the Wikimedia
community logo[1], created in 2006 by Artur “WarX” Fijałkowski, which was
discussed on this mailing list[2] as well as on Meta[3] back in March, a
small group of community members—Artur, myself, Federico Leva (Nemo) and
John Vandenberg—have initiated a formal process of opposition against the
registration of the trademark by the Foundation in order to *reclaim the
logo* for unrestricted use by the community.

We appreciate the Foundation’s protection of the other trademarks they have
registered so far, including the logos of Wikipedia, Wikisource and some
other sister projects. In the case of the community logo, however, it is
our belief that the Foundation’s actions are exactly opposite to what the
community logo stands for and contradict the purpose behind its very
existence.

We would like to make it clear that it is not our intention to damage
anyone; our actions are a challenge against what we perceive as unilateral
declaration of ownership of an asset that has always belonged to the wider
community, and not to one or another organisation that is part of the
movement. By formally opposing the registration of the trademark we hope to
ensure the history of this logo is not disregarded, and we wish to protect
the community against unnecessary bureaucracy and, to use another quote,
let “groups who do not purport to represent the WMF”[4] to continue to be
able to freely associate with a logo that has been part of their identity
for so long.

We also want to note that this is in no way a legal action against the
Foundation, but a simple notice of opposition against the registration of
the logo in the European Union. If we assume good faith, we can only be
confident that the WMF, having now a formal occasion, will withdraw its
registration of the logo rather than continue using movement resources to
force the community into lengthy, expensive proceedings.

We invite all community members interested in this issue to express their
opinions at:

opposition, promoting the discussion, etc.), please feel free to contact us

[Wikimediaau-l] Pitch In! Oral History transcription pilot

2013-09-21 Thread John Vandenberg
Hi,

The State Library of Queensland (SLQ) Pitch In! project has three more
weeks to go.

https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Wikisource:WikiProject_SLQ

New users and anons are still appearing whenever the SLQ promote the
project on social media. e.g.
https://en.wikisource.org/w/index.php?title=Special:RecentChangesLinked&days=30&from=&target=Index%3AAustralian_enquiry_book_of_household_and_general_information.djvu

SLQ has added an oral history to be transcribed, and after a bit of
fiddling we have the transcription project ready. It is a 1h20m
interview of Ian Charlton, a retired Queensland architect. SLQ has a
large collection of similar interviews of significant architects, and
hope this pilot will clear the way for more similar uploads.

https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Index:Ian_Charlton.ogg

The Proofread Page software doesnt have any special support for ogg
files, however each page has a player preset to the desired starting
point for transcription. The player should jump forward without
needing to download the 80meg audio file. e.g.

https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Page:Ian_Charlton.ogg/17

This transcription can then be 'incorporated' into the ogg file using
the new Timed Media Handler. I've done a quick demo here:

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/TimedText:Ian_Charlton.ogg.en.srt

This is new territory for Wikisource, and the Commons timedtext
feature is also fairly new to most of us. It would be great if a few
members of this list can play around with this ogg project a little
and report problems. Next week newbies will be asked to contribute to
this transcription.
There is a centralised discussion at
https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Wikisource:Scriptorium#Transcribing_audio

[Wikimediaau-l] Pitch In! SLQ project

2013-07-10 Thread John Vandenberg
Late on Monday the State Library of Queensland launched its 'Pitch In'
program, where the SLQ staff work with digital volunteers working on
Flickr Commons, Trove, Wikisource and Historypin.

http://www.slq.qld.gov.au/about-us/pitch-in

Their 'Wikisource' page:

http://www.slq.qld.gov.au/about-us/pitch-in/transcribe

Our 'SLQ' page:

https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Wikisource:WikiProject_SLQ

They are using 'pitchinslq' as the tag to communicate with the digital
volunteers on twitter and facebook.

https://twitter.com/search?q=%23pitchinslq

https://www.facebook.com/hashtag/pitchinslq

Already one work has been transcribed by volunteers, and the majority
of the transcription came from a new contributor 'HelenVSmith', which
is tweeting as Helen V Smith @HVSresearch.

https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/HelenVSmith
https://twitter.com/HVSresearch/status/354231873628680196

https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Eleanor_Elizabeth_Bourne_Papers

(note that you can add links to Wikipedia or Wiktionary to the text,
if it helps comprehension. A great example is 'Persia', which links to
the Wikipedia article 'SS Persia (1900)')

SLQ is also providing their own transcription, where they have
obtained it the old fashioned way. We've uploaded their transcription
into Wikisource, so now we need people to carefully review the
transcription.

https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Index:George_Green_-_2nd_Light_Horse_Regiment_Gallipoli_Volume_1.djvu

The first 'big' project is the transcription of an 170 page book, with
about 20 pages done so far.

https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Index:Australian_enquiry_book_of_household_and_general_information.djvu

The SLQ staff are helping:

https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/Mawarre
https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/Araunik

And there online campaign is bringing in many new contributors:

https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/Evelyn_Kruger
https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/Danielseed
https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/Pippigolightly

https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/Sscoates
https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/Natsa
https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/Natalie

Not bad for 48 hours! ;-)

And finally, a big thanks to Craig Franklin for helping with the
influx of Wikisource newbies ;-)

Dear everybody,

Sorry for cross posting.

On Saturday the 29th of June, there will be a number of WWI
edit-a-thons organized in Europe and Australia! So far six countries
have edit-a-thons planned and volunteers from two other countries are
planning online events in two other Wikipedia language versions!

This is an initiative by Wikimedia Sverige, in cooperation with
Europeana, and we would like to invite all of you to organize a small
gathering in your country/hometown; create an online contest in your
language version; or simply join one of the existing ones – simply
sign up on Meta or drop me an email if you have any questions!

If you, as a participant, use the images from Europeana and write
articles you can win a travel check with 300 euros (which for example
could help cover part of your costs for participating at Wikimania or
some other nice trip)! Read more about the Europeana Challenge here.

As far as I know this is the largest number of parallel edit-a-thons
ever! So don't miss out now when we are writing history! *pun
intended*

Kind regards,

John

[Wikimediaau-l] Fwd: Contracting: procurement subcommittee

2013-06-22 Thread John Vandenberg
Hi,

The following email has been sent through to the members mailing list.
If you have the desired experience, we need you! ;-)

Please join our public meeting next Sunday to help us establish the
contracting model.

-- Forwarded message --
From: John Vandenberg
Date: Sun, Jun 23, 2013 at 4:51 PM
Subject: Contracting: procurement subcommittee
To: WMAu members

Hi members,

Wikimedia Australia has adopted a contracting model for resourcing our
organisation.

The first step down this path is setting up a 'procurement
subcommittee', which will be a group of volunteers who review and
approve packages of work that are to be given to contractors. The
committee is seeking members of the organisation who have an interest
in being part of this procurement subcommittee. If you have
financial, HR, or project management experience, you'd be ideal. If
you have some other experience that might be relevant, you're ideal
too!

However members of the procurement subcommittee can't be a contractor.
You can be part of this procurement subcommittee for a limited time
if, say, you'd like to help set it up but can't make a long-term
commitment to the role.

If you're interested, please send an email with your relevant
experience to the committee (c...@wikimedia.org.au).

We'll be discussing this at the next public meeting, which is next Sunday.

If you are interested in working for Wikimedia Australia as a
contractor, or know someone who is, we'll be calling for contractors
soon after the procurement subcommittee is established.

If you have a wiki project that could benefit from some paid
personnel, please send your ideas to the members mailing list
(memb...@wikimedia.org.au) for discussion, and please come to the
public meeting next week.

For more details, see the approved proposal page.

[Wikimediaau-l] Brisbane meetup with Sue Gardner on 11 February 5-8 PM

2013-01-30 Thread John Vandenberg
While Sue is in Brisbane for the ALIA conferences, we will have a

We are using CiviCRM for registration. If you can make it, please
register here:

A Wikipedia username is mandatory as numbers to the meetup will be
limited, and we need to ensure wiki people dont miss out. If you
don't have a Wikipedia account, but have been involved in the wiki
world in other ways, please create a Wikipedia account or put a fake
username in the field and then send the committee an email explaining
what you've been doing if we dont already know ;-)

Share this email with any wiki people who you believe may be
interested in attending.

p.s. the ical link is broken at the moment.

Re: [Wikimediaau-l] Board meeting and public meeting - January

2013-01-05 Thread John Vandenberg
Hi everyone,

The venue is at 215 Franklin Street in the city, near Victoria Market.
Doors open around 9:30am for a 10am start.

We had a good board meeting today. Tomorrow morning we'll do a quick
recorded one hour overview of today's board meeting.

The agenda for tomorrow is on the wiki.

In the morning we'll be looking at the high level strategy, and in the
afternoon we'll be discussing any new projects that people want to
undertake in 2013, in detail.

We finish tomorrow at 4pm, for a 4:30pm exit of the building.

We have very few people signed up so far, and the room can easily hold
_lots_ of people, so please pop in any time. You dont need to be a
member to attend.

We'll be grabbing a bite nearby for lunch.

[Wikimediaau-l] Board meeting and public meeting - January

2012-12-21 Thread John Vandenberg
Hi,

The board will be meeting in Melbourne CBD on 5-6 January, thanks to a free
venue being provided by La Trobe University.

Everyone is welcome to attend the public meeting in person or remotely.
There will be limited numbers in person. We havent worked out what we do if
too many people want to come. Probably members first, regular contributors
next, etc.

http://www.wikimedia.org.au/wiki/Meeting:Public_(2013-01-06)

I've set up a public facebook event for you you to easily invite more
people and to confirm attendance.

[Wikimediaau-l] Fwd: [Wikimedia-l] The Affiliations Committee needs you!

Subject: [Wikimedia-l] The Affiliations Committee needs you!

"Wikimedia Mailing List"
Cc:

Dear all,

The Affiliations Committee [1], the committee that is responsible for
guiding volunteers in establishing Chapters, User Groups and Thematic
Organizations ("affiliates" in short) and approving them when they are
ready is looking for about 6 new members.

The main focus of AffCom is to guide groups of volunteers in forming
affiliates. We make sure that the group is large enough to be viable
(and advise them on how to get bigger), review bylaws for compliance
with the requirements and best practices, and advise the Board of the
Wikimedia Foundation on issues connected to Chapters, Thematic
Organizations and User Groups.

This requires communication with volunteers all over the World,
negotiating skills and cultural sensitivity and the ability to
understand legal texts. We try to get a healthy mix of different skill
sets in our members.

Key skills/experience that we are looking for in candidate members,
are typically:

* Excitement by the challenge of helping to empower groups of
volunteers worldwide
* Willingness to work in a sometimes bureaucratic, sometimes political
process
* 4 hours per week availability[2]
* International orientation
* Very good communication skills in English
* Ability to work and communicate with other cultures
* Strong understanding of the structure and work of affiliates and the WMF
* Communication skills in other languages are a major plus
* Experience with or in an active affiliate is a major plus

With the help of the Affiliations Committee, 2012 has been an exciting
year of transformation for the movement with the introduction of new
types of affiliation. This means that the workload of the Committee
has increased and diversified and help is wanted! Currently many
applications to become a Chapter, Thematic Organization or User Group
are in the pipeline and can use your attention and dedication!

You can send your applications with your name, contact data (e-mail,
wiki username), experience and motivation to join to the AffCom email
address, affcom AT lists DOT wikimedia DOT org by January 12, 2013.
You will get a confirmation that your application came through.

Members are usually selected every twelve months for staggered two
year terms. The applications will be considered by the current members
and outgoing members and Committee advisers, who are not seeking
re-selection.

Since I will be a candidate for re-selection myself, this process will
be managed by another committee member, Lodewijk Gelauff. I hope for
many suitable applications. If you have any questions, please don't
hesitate to email me or Lodewijk[3] privately. We are happy to chat or
have a phone call with anyone about our work, if this helps them
decide to apply.

Please distribute this call among your networks, and do apply if you
are interested.

Best regards,
Bence Damokos
Chair,
Affiliations Committee

[Wikimediaau-l] Fwd: [Wikitech-l] Endorse your preferred candidates to the Outreach Program for Women

Program for Women
To: "Wikimedia developers"
Cc:

The deadline for submissions to the Outreach Program for Women was reached
yesterday and we have got 11 candidates:

http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/**Outreach_Program_for_Women#**Candidates

The selection process and criteria are explained at
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/**Outreach_Program_for_Women#**Selection

Between now and Friday you (yes, you) are encouraged to endorse your
preferred participants in their User Talk pages. Ten minutes of your time
might bring 3 months of paid internship to a brilliant contributor!

This call goes especially for contributors to projects related to the
project proposals presented. This endorsement is also a good opportunity to
offer your support and help. Candidates can also request endorsement from
colleagues in projects where you are currently active. All input data is
useful as long as there is some way to identify who is endorsing.

We will use these endorsements in our evaluation for each candidate. The
most important factor of evaluation will be the confidence of the mentors
on each candidate accomplishing the goals of their proposals. Your backing
is relevant to register interests in a specific proposal and also the help
it might get from other contributors interested in the same area. At the
end the goal of the program is to see tasks accomplished and (even more
important) new members happily involved in the community after the
internship ends.

There is a private meeting with all the mentors this Friday. Make sure your
feedback is posted in their Talk pages by then.

The selected candidates will be announced on December 11, next Tuesday.

PS: Candidates are invited to introduce themselves in this list if they
wish. If you are here it's because you have done already a significant
amount of homework. W hope to see you around and active regardless of the
outcome of the selection! Congratulations and thank you for choosing
Wikimedia as your preferred project to contribute.

Re: [Wikimediaau-l] Fellowships

2012-12-03 Thread John Vandenberg
I doubt the FDC will approve funding for a Fellowship program where we
get to decide which application is most appropriate. That is
regranting. Regranting programs tend to see applications mostly from
the people near the inner circle.

We might be able to succeed with a Fellowship program if we had fairly
clearly defined boundaries, and think we have a very good chance of
success if we have applications already published.

I think we are better off picking one or two themes quickly, where we
know we have a lot of potential candidates, and actively seeking
applicants by direct messages on talk pages, emails, etc. etc. We
could have applications published before the FDC due date (~1 March),
with a decision to be made after the FDC due date - at least then the
FDC knows what they are funding.

With the WMF possibly cutting fellowships, and our own strategic objective
of taking responsibility for WMF resources in Oz, I think it would be
possible to pick up the guantlet and include a fellowship in our FDC
application.

What themes would be good? Some ideas:

[Wikimediaau-l] English only fundraiser

2012-11-25 Thread John Vandenberg
-- Forwarded message --
From: "Zack Exley"
Date: Nov 26, 2012 2:11 PM
Subject: [Wikimedia-l] Fundraiser launch update
To: "Wikimedia Mailing List"

Hi all,

We have some information on the fundraiser launch to share. We are still
planning on launching Monday, November 26, but we're going to make a change
this year in the timing of campaigns around the world.

Every year, as we get closer to the launch date, we test more frequently
and discover new messages and designs that make the fundraiser much more
efficient (i.e. more money per day, shorter fundraiser, fewer and/or
smaller banners).

In the past couple weeks, we've discovered some new designs and messages
that we believe will let us shorten the fundraiser by a lot -- *and* make
the banners much smaller than they've typically been.

But we don't have time to adapt these to all the countries and languages in
the world right away. This has pushed us to do something we've known is the
right thing to do for some time.

We're going to run this end of year campaign only in 5 countries (US, CA,
GB, AU & NZ) and then spend three months meticulously localizing and
translating (and testing for new purely local messages) before running the
global campaign in all other counties, in which our best messages and
designs developed in December will be used across the world.

We will use the time over the next month to run short tests of various
messages and payment options in other languages and countries in
preparation for the global campaign that we'll run in April. So people in
the five-country campaign will still only see a campaign once a year (in
December). And people in all other countries will still only see a
campaign once a year (in April).

*Everyone, everywhere will only see one campaign per year* -- unless they
happen to travel from, say, the US in December to India in April.

We're excited about breaking the campaign up for several reasons. Over the
next month, we will be able to focus on testing and finding the best
messages. The new "Facts" banners have opened up more testing possibilites
for us, and we'll learn a lot about our messages in the next month, while
we can test 24 hours per day. We'll use the lessons learned from the
December five-country campaign and spend the next three months applying
them correctly and testing multiple versions in other languages and
countries.

What we've learned over the past few years is that the same messages tend
to win all over the world. But that translating short, colloquial
fundraising messages takes a long time and many translators to get right.
And we're finding a new "best" message basically every day. We don't think
it's good if only English readers are getting our best messages.

So overall, we think we'll be able to run both the English banners and the
multilingual banners better by breaking up the campaign.

Our volunteer translators have already done a ton of work translating our
current best messages -- and we are very thankful! We're using all of those
translations now, in our testing and they will be the basis of the April
campaign. We will be engaging the community of volunteers, donors and
readers even more in the coming months to optimize the translations of the
new messages and ramp up testing in various languages. Moreover, there are
technical updates to the translation system that we'll be able to use
during the April campaign that are not released yet.

We are looking forward to more of our readers receiving better messages and
donation experiences in countries around the world.

More info to come! Instead of replying to this thread, please comment

To:

On Friday, Bernard Rentier, Rector, University of Liege, Belgium, told a
meeting of senior academics and government officials how open access to
research publications can become a routine part of government funded
research.

Professor Rentier was speaking at the Australian National University in
Canberra on "Open Access to Scholarly Publications: A European
Perspective", as part of a visiting Belgium delegation. He pointed out that
open access was opposed by most publishers as it conflicted with their
business model, whereas it fitted the university's business model. Within
universities the researchers who create publications do not pay for them,
the library does.

Professor Rentier suggested the Liege Model could be adopted more widely.
The university started creating a repository and a policy requiring authors
to deposit their publications with it. He pointed out that it is difficult
to get academics to comply with such a policy, but it was possible. One way
is to incorporate this in the requirements for research grants: the
researcher is required to agree to deposit their publication in the
repository or they do not get a grant.

Dear Wikimaniacs,

We are now calling for a scholarship review committee.

The scholarship review committee is an important and diverse group of
volunteers who help to run the scholarship program.

The main duties of the committee members prior to Wikimania 2013 are:
* Assistance in determination of scholarship applicant requirements.

scholarship applications.
* Work with the local team.

We are looking for Wikimedians from all over the world, who are:
* Fluent in written English.
* Good communication skills.
* Discretion and ability to handle confidential applicant information,
and objectively assess candidates.
* Willing to review scholarship applicants in early 2013.
* Either:
** Prior attendance at Wikimania.
** Strong knowledge of cross-project Wikimedia community.

You will be working remotely. While we hope that scholarship review
committee members will enjoy Wikimania 2013 by giving significant
input to it, the local team cannot guarantee financial support for the
committee members' travel expenses.

If you're interested to serve on the scholarship reviewing committee,
please send us an email at wikima...@wikimedia.hk . If you have any
queries, please don't hesitate to ask us.

Deadline to apply is Tuesday, December 11, 2012.
The local team will contact all candidates between November and
January; the list of scholarship committee members will be announced
in January.

[Wikimediaau-l] Fwd: [Wikimedia-l] 2012 Editor survey launched

2012-10-30 Thread John Vandenberg
-- Forwarded message --
From: "Tilman Bayer"
Date: Oct 31, 2012 7:26 AM
Subject: [Wikimedia-l] 2012 Editor survey launched
To: "Wikimedia Mailing List"

Hi all,

we have just launched the Foundation's 2012 editor survey; with
invitations to participate being shown to logged-in users on Wikipedia
and Commons.

A few quick facts about the survey (for more refer to
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Research:Wikipedia_Editor_Survey_2012
):

* This is the third survey of editors as envisaged in the Foundation's
2010-15 strategic plan "in order to take the pulse of the community
and identify pressing issues or concerns", after the April 2011 and
December 2011 surveys.

* The first main purpose of this survey is to continue the work of the
2011 studies (conducted by Mani Pande and Ayush Khanna), with a focus
on tracking changes since last year and identifying trends.
Which is why many questions are being repeated from last time.

* The second emphasis in this instance of the survey is to measure the
satisfaction of the editing community with the work of the Wikimedia
Foundation.

* This is the first editor survey that includes a non-Wikipedia
project (Commons, for the questions that are non Wikipedia-specific).

* Thanks to everyone who commented on the draft questionnaire after we
solicited feedback on this list and in and IRC office hour, as well as
to those who commented about the last survey. We made several changes
based on the feedback, and tried to reply to all concerns.

* Also many thanks to all volunteer translators who reviewed or
contributed translations; the questionnaire is available in 14
languages (Italian, Polish and Portuguese will launch a bit later).

* As with the previous two surveys, the results will be published in
the following forms: A "topline" report detailing the percentage of
responses for each question, a series of posts on
https://blog.wikimedia.org analyzing the results, and a data set
consisting of anonymized responses which others can use to do their
own analyses. This time we will also aim to produce language-specific
topline reports (an approach we already tested for Chinese with the
data from the December 2011 survey).

[Wikimediaau-l] Fwd: WikiWomen's Collaborative

2012-10-30 Thread John Vandenberg
-- Forwarded message --
From: "Sarah Stierch"
Date: Oct 31, 2012 8:07 AM
Subject: WikiWomen's Collaborative
To:

 Dear Wikimedia Australia,

I am writing about a new project launch - the WikiWomen's Collaborative.
This is a project that has been developed by the community, and as part of
my fellowship at the Wikimedia Foundation. My work has focused for the past
year on engaging more women to participate in Wikipedia and the Wikimedia
community.

You can read about the launch of the project here:
https://blog.wikimedia.org/2012/09/26/wikiwomen-unite/

We have women from around the world who edit Wikipedia who are
participating, and I'd love to garner your support and interest in the
project. Ways that your chapter can get involved:

   - Share this template talk page of female Wikipedians:
   https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiWomen%27s_Collaborative/Invite
   - Write a blog about the WikiWomen's Collaborative and how women
involved in your chapter or country can get involved based on the blog I
   linked to above.
- Share projects and programs that your chapter is doing to engage more
women to help "close the gap."
- Like us on Facebook and share news, stories and links:
   https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiWomen%27s_Collaborative/Facebook -
and be sure to invite your women friends and family on Facebook to like us
too - Wikipedians and "not yet" Wikipedians welcome!
   - Contribute to the Wikimedia Foundation WikiWomen's blog roll about the
importance of women contributing to projects, profiles about WikiWomen in
   your chapter, and more:
   https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiWomen%27s_Collaborative/Blogs

Thank you for your consideration and please share this email - and if I can
provide any support to you, please let me know. I'm happy to engage your
chapter in helping to close the gender gap.

Sincerely,

Sarah Stierch

[Wikimediaau-l] 2012 AGM: 25 November

2012-10-22 Thread John Vandenberg
Yesterday the committee did not have quorum at its monthly meeting,
which is adjourned until next Sunday.

However the committee has used its wiki voting mechanism, developed
last December[1], to finalise the date of the AGM as 25 November, and
the outline the method to be used for committee election at the AGM,
being electronic voting using either memberdb or Adam Jenkins software
depending on feedback from the community.

http://www.wikimedia.org.au/wiki/Meeting:2012_AGM

http://www.wikimedia.org.au/wiki/Resolution:2012_Annual_General_Meeting

Resolution: That Wikimedia Australia will hold its 2012 Annual General
Meeting on 25 November 2012 16.00 AEST, and the following timetable is
in effect:

21 October 2012 16.00 AEST: Software for the election at the AGM must
be published.

26 October 2012 16.00 AEST: All resolutions, including rule changes,
must be proposed, seconded and published according to the proposals
policy.

27 October 2012: Electronic AGM notice to be sent to
memb...@wikimedia.org.au, with members to acknowledge receipt by email
to secret...@wikimedia.org.au

28 October 2012: Prepaid post AGM notice to be sent to all currently
financial members that have not electronically acknowledged receipt.

1 November 2012 00:01 AEST: Membership database is closed until the
AGM has concluded.

9 November 2012 12:00 AEST: Nominations open.

14 November 2012 12:00 AEST: Nominations close.

16 November 2012 12:00 AEST: Election opens.

23 November 2012 12:00 AEST: Election closes.

24 November 2012 12:00 AEST: IRC nicknames to be published on the
Wiki. Proxy forms to be submitted to the Secretary.

25 November 2012 16.00 AEST: AGM

26 November 2012: Membership database is opened.

http://www.wikimedia.org.au/wiki/Resolution:2012_Annual_General_Meeting_electronic_election

Recognising that Resolution:2012 Annual General Meeting sets the AGM
date at 25 November 2012 and election software must have been
published before 21 October 2012,

Resolution: That Wikimedia Australia accepts the following electronic
software as candidates for its committee election, and requests that
members and the public inspect the code for suitability:

1. Adam Jenkins' software which uses Single Transferable Vote

2. memberdb which uses it's own formula that was designed to the
specifications of Linux Australia, and adopted by Linux Users
Victoria. It implements preferential voting, but with variations on
the typical algorithm to support people standing for multiple
positions and having multiple people elected to a single position.

The committee notes that like Linux Australia and Linux Users
Victoria, Wikimedia Australia allows candidates to stand for more than
one position, and the position of Ordinary Member has multiple people
elected to it.

The committee requests that both pieces of software are to be set up
for all financial members to trial until 4 November 2012. These trial
implementations may occur on any server.

The committee accepts that code changes may be made between now and
the election to resolve problems identified with the published code.
All software fixes must be published before 4 November 2012 when the
committee will select which software will be used.

The selected software must be installed on the Wikimedia Australia
server by one of our system administrators, and all candidates in the
election must not have access to the Wikimedia Australia server after
the election opens.

[Wikimediaau-l] Fwd: [ands-general] OKFN Au - Information and Roadmap

2012-10-01 Thread John Vandenberg
-- Forwarded message --
From: David F. Flanders
Date: Tue, Oct 2, 2012 at 10:16 AM
Subject: [ands-general] OKFN Au - Information and Roadmap
To: ANDS General

As announced at last week's OKFest in Helsinki the official chapter of the
OKF in Australia has been announced. This builds on the significant
efforts of the GovHack, GovCamp & GovJam events to create a wider
'upside-down umbrella community support network' for those dedicated to
cause of OpenKnowledge (this of course includes the OpenData efforts as
well!).

Please do consider joining one of the many OKF listservs, such as Data
Journalism, Open Bibliography, Open Shakespeare or one of the many
other volunteer efforts.

And don't forget to join the local OKF AU chapter listserv as described
below! /dff

OKFN Au – Information & Roadmap

Welcome to the Australian chapter of the Open Knowledge Foundation Network
– OKFN Au.

OKFN Au is a community initiative to create a bridge between the many and
varied open knowledge communities in Australia, including
hackers,
data journalists, scientists, Gov 2.0 and open data peeps, knowledge and
change management enthusiasts and civil society. Please browse the site,
check out the list of open knowledge
communitiesin Australia, send us
details about your group to add to the network on the
community mailing list at http://lists.okfn.org/pipermail/okfn-au/**,
check out the community calendar and get involved [image: :)]

OKFN is a global community network, established
originally in the UK. It brings together people interested and active in
opening up and using data to create and share knowledge.

The Open Knowledge Foundation is dedicated to promoting the creation,
sharing and application of Open Knowledge in the Digital Age.

The goal of an Australian chapter could be to support, promote and bring
together the active and diverse open knowledge communities in Australia. We
have some well established tech communities, research groups, open
government communities, emerging data journo communities and loads more
that could all benefit through being connected to each other, even if just
peripherally. It makes it easier to understand the breadth and skills of
our community which, in turn, makes it easier to connect with each other
and collaborate on common goals or projects.

Best of all OKFN Au will make it easier for newcomers to this space to
identify a group or groups in our community that they can join and
contribute to, both nationally and internationally.

It is very early days and generally speaking, most people will work and
play within their groups and continue life as usual, but OKFN Au could be
thought of like an upside down umbrella to support the broader community.
Through some initial discussions, we’ve come up with some potential
functions of OKFN Au and would love your feedback about what would (or
wouldn’t) be useful for you and your community:

   - promotion of community groups and events – listing of the various
   groups, aggregated calendar
   - some flagship events for cross community goodness – an annual Aus
OKFestival including GovCamp, GovUX, GovHack and other community events
including themes around science, data journalism, digital humanities & open
   government
   - knowledge sharing – through a group blog and global and local mailing
lists, encouraging cross posting of content from the communities. A monthly
online OKFN Au online chat could be useful for identifying upcoming events,
opportunities to work together, promoting good work throughout the
community, and for anyone throughout the extended community to get involved
   in OKFN Au itself
   - community collaboration – through mailing lists, wikis and other
tools, facilitating groups to reach out to each other to tap into a broad
range of skills for awesome community projects
   - possible resources and services to support community activities –
insurances, small grants for pizza and beer, web tools, legal, etc
   - anything else the community needs to be awesome.

Some of these ideas would require the set up of an organisation, some could
be achieved through a casual network of volunteers. We would like to grow
this idea organically over the coming 12 months in response to the needs of
the community so do get involved and let us know what you think on the OKFN
Au mailing list !

Pia and the OKFN Au Working Group

*Please note that OKFN Au is not envisioned to be a lobbying organisation,
but rather a group focused on open knowledge community development and
growth in Australia.*

[Wikimediaau-l] SLQ German article now live

2012-09-23 Thread John Vandenberg
A nice success story ..

A German language draft article about Hinchinbrook Island was created
during the SLQ workshop in Ingham, and recently it was found and
promoted by a "Traveletti", a relatively new 'wikipedian' who started
in March 2011 and has only 338 edits to German Wikipedia and only 417
edits to English Wikipedia.

https://de.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Hinchinbrook_Island&action=history&uselang=en

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:GLAM/SLQ/20_April_2012

My guess is they found the draft via a Google search and decided to
work on it. It looks like they do one or two small projects each
month. Very cool demonstration of the disconnected micro-payments of
volunteer effort that eventually culminate in a functioning project
like Wikipedia.

Please add any links you think are missing!

It only includes a few of the largest/most active WikiProjects so as
not to overwhelm the template, but I did also give the full list at

Re: [Wikimediaau-l] ::HOPAU:: Australia at the Paralympics, in other languages

2012-09-02 Thread John Vandenberg
Good idea. Bios too.

I've found one gold medalist that has a German and Polish bio written
before the games. The Europeans love their cycling.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Gallagher_%28cyclist%29

The German bio received a decent spike of 57 pageviews

http://stats.grok.se/de/latest/Michael_Gallagher_%28Radsportler,_1978%29

The Polish bio spike was minor.

[Wikimediaau-l] Australia at the Paralympics, in other languages

2012-09-02 Thread John Vandenberg
Day 4 of 14 is over, and the English page about Australia at the
Paralympics has received 20729 pageviews in the last 30 days.

http://stats.grok.se/en/latest/Australia_at_the_2012_Summer_Paralympics

So far Australia has a page in German and French:

https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vorlage:Navigationsleiste_Teilnehmer_Sommer-Paralympics_2012

https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australie_aux_Jeux_paralympiques_d%27%C3%A9t%C3%A9_de_2012

By size of Wikipedia, the next languages to be translated into are
Dutch, Italian, Polish, Spanish, then Russian, Japanese, Portuguese,
Chinese and Swedish.

I think Chinese and Russian should be our primary focus.

It would be good to have a Chinese language Wikipedia page as China is
leading the medal table, as they did for the Olypmpics, so this
presents a unique opportunity for Chinese Wikipedia to have the
information that Chinese speakers are looking for.

The Chinese Olympics page received 94184 pageviews in July and 97069 in August.

Sadly, the main Chinese page for the Paralympics has received ~640
pageviews in the last 30 days.

http://stats.grok.se/zh/latest30/2012%E5%B9%B4%E5%A4%8F%E5%AD%A3%E6%AE%8B%E7%96%BE%E4%BA%BA%E5%A5%A5%E6%9E%97%E5%8C%B9%E5%85%8B%E8%BF%90%E5%8A%A8%E4%BC%9A

And they only have articles written for three Chinese speaking countries.

https://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:NPCin2012SummerParalympics

According to the census, Chinese is one of the most important
languages in Australia other than English.

The Chinese page about Australia at the Olympics received ~640
pageviews for July and August.

http://stats.grok.se/zh/latest30/2012%E5%B9%B4%E5%A4%8F%E5%AD%A3%E5%A5%A5%E6%9E%97%E5%8C%B9%E5%85%8B%E8%BF%90%E5%8A%A8%E4%BC%9A

A Russian and Ukrainian page about Australia and Ukraine would also
help, as the Ukraine is coming fourth in the medal tally (and most
Ukraine citizens know Russian).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ukraine_at_the_2012_Summer_Paralympics

p.s. The quickest way to find at Paralympics in is
to start at

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Nations_at_the_2012_Summer_Paralympics

And follow the interwikis on the category, or navigate to the English
page about the nation and see if it has an interwiki.

(e.g. Italian Wikipedia doesnt have a category, as it has only one
article about a nation
https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Italia_ai_XIV_Giochi_paralimpici_estivi )

Japanese and Swedish Wikipedias don't have an article about any nation.

[Wikimediaau-l] Expression of support for Dictionary of Sydney from Wikimedia Australia

2012-07-28 Thread John Vandenberg
Dear City of Sydney CEO Monica Barone,

On behalf of Wikimedia Australia, I write to express our concern about
the imminent closure of the Dictionary of Sydney due to the City of
Sydney's delays in releasing sponsorship funds.

Wikimedia Australia is an independent, not-for-profit organisation,
officially recognised as a national Chapter of the Wikimedia movement
- the volunteer community behind Wikipedia and other online
educational resources. We would like to express our support for the
Dictionary of Sydney project not only for the quality content that it
has produced but also for the globally pioneering role it has played
in its use of free-licensing. The Dictionary of Sydney provides the
vast majority of its content with a "Creative Commons" copyright
license that ensures the material can be used by third parties under
very open terms. This is considered world's best practice and is
consistent with the principles espoused by the "Open Educational
Resources" and "Open Source Software" communities globally. It should
be noted that the official State history project of Minnesota in the
USA, entitled "MNOpedia" http://www.mnopedia.org/ has used the
Dictionary of Sydney as the inspiration for their comparable copyright
policy.

The strong stance of the Dictionary of Sydney on open access and
collaboration with historians both locally and further afield has
ensured that the content it has created is both legally and
practically compatible with Wikipedia, the world's fifth most visited
website. As a result, many of the Dictionary's articles about
important people, places and events have been integrated into
Wikipedia, including but not limited to:

"Florence Violet McKenzie"
(Australia's first female electrical engineer:
  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Florence_Violet_McKenzie )

"Glebe Island"
(a crucial part of Sydney's economy for centuries:
  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glebe_Island_%28New_South_Wales%29 )

"Sydney Artists' Camps"
(one of the most significant art movements in Australia's history:
  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sydney_artists%27_camps )

We draw your attention to the comprehensive acknowledgement of the
Dictionary of Sydney at the bottom of each Wikipedia article that uses
Dictionary material as the source of its content. Without the
Dictionary of Sydney, and without its pioneering efforts in open
access, this content simply would not have been available to the
online encyclopaedia and its wider audience. It would be a great shame
to see this outstanding collaborative digital history project fold.

Wikimedia Australia urges the City of Sydney to ensure the continued
funding and support for this project, without which the global
appreciation of Sydney's history would be very much poorer.

If you would like to contact Wikimedia Australia or one of our Sydney
based members for further information on this or related matters we
would welcome your enquiry.

Sincerely,
John Vandenberg

Re: [Wikimediaau-l] Expression of support for Dictionary of Sydney from Wikimedia Australia

2012-07-27 Thread John Vandenberg
Hi Joe,

This was intentional, done as part of the following proposal

http://www.wikimedia.org.au/wiki/Proposal:Dictionary_of_Sydney_support_letter

There was also a private discussion happening at the same time on the
WMAU members mailing list, where it was recommended that we send the
email out to each recipient individually with a personal salutation,
and we CC the public list so that there is a public record and also
the recipients may wish to reply in public also.

My apologies for the noise resulting from this.

[Wikimediaau-l] Expression of support for Dictionary of Sydney from Wikimedia Australia

2012-07-27 Thread John Vandenberg
Dear Cr Harris,

President,

Subject: Subject: IRC office hours to discuss FDC eligibility criteria
and next steps
To: Wikimedia Foundation Mailing List

Dear Wikimedia Community,

As you may have seen, last week the Wikimedia Foundation Board of
Trustees passed a resolution to establish the Funds Dissemination
Committee (FDC) [1]. Full details about the planned structure and
processes of the FDC can be found in the framework proposed to the
Board [2]. This framework was developed over the past few months with
input from a variety of people across the movement.

We will be holding two sets of IRC office hours on Wednesday 25 July,
to answer any questions community members may have about the FDC
process; in particular the first step of establishing the eligibility
to apply to the FDC. Office hours will be held:

· 16:00-17:00 UTC/09:00 PDT Wednesday, July 25th

· 23:00-23:59 UTC/16:00 PDT Wednesday, July 25th

On Monday 23 July 2012, the Foundation will publish a list of eligible
entities based on the eligibility criteria established in the
framework [3]. Please let me know if you believe there are any
corrections to be made to this list. Entities who are interested in
applying for funds through the FDC but are ineligible due to
compliance issues should work with the Foundation to develop a plan to
correct compliance issues.

Entities who are ineligible for other reasons - or who would prefer
not to go through the FDC process in this round -may seek funding
through the Wikimedia Foundation Grants Program.

I will be sending out a more detailed email on Monday to inform you of
this list and next steps in the process. I look forward to speaking
with you on Wednesday.

Sincerely,

Garfield Byrd

(WMF Chief of Finance and Administration)

Melburnian expanded the article about Albert de Lestang, and Laura
Hale nominated it as a DYK.  It is now on the front page:

https://en.wikipedia.org/

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albert_de_Lestang

I think that is the first regional SLQ workshop article on the front page.

An article created at the October 2011 SLQ workshop (Brisbane; not
regional) was also on the front page this month, resulting in ~8400
pageviews.

The wheelchair basketball state championships "The Classics" is on at
Bris Entertainment Centre boondall today and Monday and is open to the
general public.

see
http://www.sportingwheelies.org.au/

Siska and I attended yesterday and took a few photos. We didnt get
many, and I am not even an amateur photographer. We didn't have time
to conduct interviews. It would be good if other wiki people can
attend with better cameras and more time; if you do, mention you are
from Wikimedia as they are become quite used to us now and will pose
for group or individual shots provided we arnt interrupting them.

It would be especially useful to take photographs of any officials
present to undertake 'classification' of people who are going to the
Paralympics, if they give permission to be photographed for Wikipedia.

This article was created by one of our HOPAU (Paralympics) team when
he attended his first Wiki training session at the State Library of
Queensland in Brisbane.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1907_Sydney_bathing_costume_protests

user:Whiteghost.ink expanded and referenced it, and Laura Hale set up
the DYK nomination

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Did_you_know_nominations/1907_Sydney_bathing_costume_protests

(Graham87, Lankiveil, Tony1 & Shiftchange also worked on it)

Can anyone think of a more interesting hook, and/or do the review of
this article?

[Wikimediaau-l] Wikinews workshop tonight Friday 8pm AEST

2012-05-18 Thread John Vandenberg
Hi,

Laura, Bidgee and Tim Collins have been at the Opal training camp this
week in the lead up to Olympics, where there are also Paralympians
training for the Paralympics.

They have been writing Wikipedia & Wikinews articles about these topics.

Tonight at 8pm-10pm we will be holding a Wikinews workshop on IRC to
support Laura, Bidgee and Tim, and so other contributors can learn
about Wikinews.

It will be a two hour session, however please join in at any time, and
pop in even for 10 minutes and provide your thoughts on the wikinews
articles that they we'll be writing.

Some of us will be working on Wikinews articles about topics other
than sport. For example the Australian budget, and Toby's wonderful
work with the ABS data.

If you need help to access the freenode IRC channel #wikimedia-au,
please email this list or me, and we'll put you in touch with someone
who can help you get ready.

If anyone would like to try skype or google+ hangouts for the
workshop, sing out and we'll try to organise that as well.

The press conference audio can be found at

https://en.wikinews.org/wiki/Talk:Australian_media_focuses_on_Olympic_prospects_against_US_for_women%27s_basketball

The photographs and other media can be found at

The wikinews articles being drafted are at

Re: [Wikimediaau-l] ::HOPAU:: Brisbane May 26 & 27 workshop and meetup

2012-05-17 Thread John Vandenberg
Thanks to the commitment and logistical assistance of the Australian
Paralympic Committee, we have 17 people currently attending the
workshops and meetup.

Saturday afternoon: 1pm-5pm

The Saturday afternoon session will use a chapter of the written
history that UQ sports historian Murray Phillips is writing about the
"The History of the Paralympic Movement in Australia" (HOPAU) as the
basis for creating and expanding Wikipedia articles about the
Paralympic movement in Australia.

Murray’s outline of the chapter identifies the key topics that need to
be expanded on Wikipedia in order to complement the development of the
written history.

In this session Murray will share what he has in mind, and
participants will be collaborating with him to flesh it out.
Wikipedians and the Paralympic community will identify which topics
the wiki folk should focus on for the next few months in order to be
able to work together with his research assistants.

The afternoon session will incorporate whiteboards and discussion
about the topics, investigating any potential notability/verifiability
issues related to these topics, and allocating topics to people who
would like to work on them.

At the conclusion of the session, we'll have a list of topics on the
wiki so that the online community can join the discussion and
collaboration.

Sunday morning: 10am-12am

The Sunday morning session will be more focused on content, with
participants working individually or in small groups. Participants
will be in the stacks, finding resources, scanning, and writing
articles.

In both sessions APC staff, Murray Phillips and related UQ
staff/students will be working together with Wikipedians to learn how
to edit Wikipedia.

Should we upgrade to 1.18.3 or 1.19.0?

How long will the 1.18.x series be supported?

I'd prefer stability over functionality, as our user base is small and
they arn't using complex features. Also upgrading takes time that the
two sysadmins (Andrew Garrett and myself) don't have lots to spare.
Does anyone want to become a volunteer sysadmin for Wikimedia
Australia?

[Wikimediaau-l] Fwd: [Linux-aus] FYI: GovHack 2012 - Over $30, 000 worth of prize money :)

2012-05-07 Thread John Vandenberg
At the Sydney meetup we talked about Toby (99of9)'s use of ABS data to
visual economic factors.

Maybe we could submit that, or something similar, to be in the running
for the prize. Winning would be great exposure.

Rewired State and the eGovernment Technology Cluster, and is supported by
