Dear Tanveer,
Thank you for all the good and fruitful efforts you have spared for the
Wikimedia mission all these years. You have been very demonstrable and
effective in many realms of participation within the complex structures of
the mission in the Indian/Indic context.
March ahead through a bright career path. And always keep a watchful ear
listening to any call of the hour from behind should ever such occasions
arise. We all might still need your guidance every often and we do
earnestly expect your timely help during such times in future.

Best wishes,
Viswaprabha.

[Wikimediaindia-l] New portal on Wikidata: Wikidata:WikiProject India

2017-09-08 Thread വിശ്വപ്രഭ
Dear Wikimedians,

As the month long country-wide Wikidata Training Tour by Asaf Bartov [*1]
is in progress through several communities and cities within India, the
term 'Wikidata' has started rolling out as a new technology buzzword among
Indian communities and media.
Choosing the occasion as most befitting, some of us have opened up a new
WikiProject portal on the Wikidata site, named WikiProject India.

The page link is https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:WikiProject_India.

This WikiProject is to coordinate the efforts to create, enhance and
populate the coverage of topics related to India including her history,
geography, culture, society, people, infrastructure, education,
demographics and anything related between India and other fields such as
science, technology, arts, entertainment etc.

For now, an indicative list of topics of immediate interest are mentioned
in the homepage. As the project grow up and get better shape, we can expand
the scope of the project both vertically and horizontally.

A query library demonstrating some data drilling methods and samples is
also available there. Together, we can also build up this library to its
best form and beauty.

An inspiring model to this venture was WikiProject Armenia (
https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:WikiProject_Armenia), which began
around a year ago. We may fork and develop upon some of the work show-cased
there, including the model queries.
(Building new queries based upon these are quite easy even for a beginner!)

I invite all of you too visit the project homepage.
https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:WikiProject_India

Are you interested to be among the pioneers of this project?
Do you want to be part of a team that will build up a great national
database that will eventually help at least one fifth of the world
population in so many ways that we can not even predict now?

If you do, if you are interested in editing and contributing to Wikidata,
then please sign up and join the project.

More questions and suggestions are welcome at the project's talk pages.

Thanks and regards,

User:Viswaprabha

[On behalf of the YAGO team]

Dear Wikidata community,

YAGO is a large general-purpose knowledge base derived from Wikipedia
and other sources. It contains more than 10 million entities (like
persons, organizations, cities, etc.) and more than 120 million
facts about these entities. It also contains time and space information,
and unifies data from Wikipedias in 11 languages. YAGO is available for
free at https://yago-knowledge.org

We are happy to announce that the source code of YAGO is now available
as well as open source under the GPL v3 license. This allows everybody
to use the extraction code, and also to contribute to YAGO.
Please find the GitHub link here: https://github.com/yago-naga/yago3

We are very grateful for the work of the Wikimedia community (including
Wikipedia and Wikidata), and we hope that our project can be of use.

Sincerely,

Certainly it is registered under Karnataka Act. However, I am not very sure
about the exact lines where it is mentioned (or not mentioned). The postal
ballots are adapted as per the best advice of our legal consultant in order
to avoid any issues should there be any disputes later during the course of
the newly elected board.

Moreover, sadly, we are not yet a Non-profit Organizsation officially.

The issue is not exactly technology, but the legal compliance according to
the current framework as stipulated by the company law etc.
We have pondered upon and tried this much important possible alternative
even before. But it was not possible.
The law requires paper ballot evidence for future records. (Although it may
look ridiculously obsolete).

[Wikimediaindia-l] The PEG Draft for WCI2016 is now open! Please verify and endorse!

2016-04-10 Thread വിശ്വപ്രഭ
Dear Wikimedians on the list,

1. The PEG application has been completed. Its status has been updated from
'draft' to 'open'. That means now the application is due for vetting and
consideration by the Grant approval committee.

https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:PEG/Satdeep_Gill/WikiConference_India_2016

However, it will be greatly helpful for the grant to get approved promptly
if more of us could go through it and check its correctness and accuracy.
If anyone finds any kind of discrepancies, please let me or Satdeep Gill
know of the same at the earliest.
*Everyone is also welcome to endorse the application by signing up with
their Wikiuser ID in the section at the bottom of the grant request.*

2. IMHO, our mutual communications, brain storming and pro-active
engagement in the WCI2016 program needs to improve quite a lot. Please
start discussing about the event and also share your ideas about how the
conference should be held, mainly through this list. We have now several
channels being used for WCI discussions. (This mail list, metawiki, the
main India mail list, Facebook etc.). It will be much more effective and
stimulating if we all ensure a single channel for continued interactions.

Preferably, this very mail list and the metawiki page (
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiConference_India_2016) together should
be treated as the official channel for communications as it will always
help us keep the record of every single and small turn of events,
activities and decision making.
So,
a) please ask your other wiki users and volunteers to join the list
immediately.
b) please get engaged in the efforts to make WCI2016 a grand success.

To join the Wikimedia India Conference mail list, please visit
https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikiconference-india

Thanks,

A Joint statement on collaboration between WMIN and CIS-A2K

Representatives from WMIN and CIS-A2K met during the Train the Trainer
Workshop that was held in Bengaluru on February 28, 2015.

The meeting was productive and paves the way for a long lasting
partnership between the two organizations. It was decided in the meeting
that WMIN and CIS-A2K teams shall work closely and contribute to each
other’s activities and growth. Following are the points towards
collaborative engagement that WMIN and CIS-A2K will work towards:

-

CIS-A2K and WMIN will revive quarterly team hangouts to enable better
communication and coordination between them. The meeting that happened on
February 28th, 2015 is the first in this series of regular meetings
 planned.
-

As a first step to signal the collaborative nature of WMIN and
CIS-A2K, we will sign a joint MoU with a leading academic institution that
will provide access to many language computing tools including OCR. We are
already at an advanced stage of discussion.
-

WMIN will work together with CIS-A2K for conducting the proposed MediaWiki
TTT in May 2015.
-

Setting up a public calendar to keep all communities, CIS-A2K and WMIN
informed about various movement related activities and events.
-

A strategy will be put in place to revive the Bengaluru Wiki Community
meetups which were very active in the past. This will be a community led
initiative facilitated by CIS-A2K and WMIN.
-

The synergy between the two organizations will also extend beyond
Wikimedia domain. For example, close coordination will be seen in Creative
Commons India related activities.
-

CIS-A2K team will be working closely with the WMIN team towards
developing its next round of FDC proposal.
-

Both CIS-A2K and WMIN acknowledge the role of India Community
Consultation 2014 facilitated by WMF that paved the way for better
understanding between the organizations.

We plan to keep the community updated about the progress on these
agreements. We will also inform when new activities are planned.

We kindly request the community to extend their support for these
 initiatives.

 Thanks.

Released on behalf of Wikimedia India and CIS-A2K.

[Wikimediaindia-l] Veteran Malayalam Wikipedian BabuG signed off...

2015-03-05 Thread വിശ്വപ്രഭ
Dear Wikimedians all over the world,

One of our stalwarts at ml Wikimedia community, Wikiuser:BabuG
https://ml.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Babug (
https://ml.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Babug) expired yesterday night.

Despite having paralyzed due to a severe stroke and severely affected by
several subsequent health problems, he was guided to Wikipedia by his son,
Dr. Ajay, another prominent Malayalam Wikipedian, as a possible remedy to
escape perpetual loneliness.

His real world name was G. Balachandran. He was born on 14th October 1938 in
a small village off North Parur, Ernakulam District, Kerala, the
Southernmost state of India. He joined the Armed Forces Engineering College
and then continued to serve the Indian Armed forces for long many years.

He started contributing to Wikimedia, particularly to Malayalam Wikipedia,
in the year 2008.

His initial contributions to Malayalam Wikipedia were based upon a
pulp-converted digital Encyclopedia, released by the Government through
GFDL licence then. He continued to create even more full-featured articles
on his own, later. By 2014 October 18 - the day he edited last in
Wikipedia- he had 1935 full-blown articles initiated and expanded by
himself in ml.wikipedia.org. Besides, he also contributed more than 350
images to Wikimedia commons and a handsome amount of contributions to
Wikisource, Wikidata and Wiktionary.

He always attributed his renewed energy and life's aspirations to the
Wikimedia mission, for having returned to a meaningful life after a 20-year
long and frustrating solitude while constrained to an immobile chair. Ever
since 2008, he stood up and started walking and moving around. His was an
extreme example for us in Malayalam WP to showcase how Wikipedia can change
lives.

In almost all our Wikipedia Outreach sessions, we utilized this great
example to motivate and excite the newcomers to WP.

Tory Read mentioned about BabuG thus, in a document
http://cis-india.org/internet-governance/india-chronicles.pdf, a review
on the state of Indian Wikimedia Communities, in 2011:

G. Balachandran, a septuagenarian who lives outside of Ernakulum in Kerala
state, said that working on Malayalam Wikipedia helped him recover after a
stroke left him paralyzed. “He’s much sharper now,” said his wife Jagadamma
 K. “He’s made a lot of new friends, and that’s been good for his health.”

For us in Malayalam Wikipedia, today is a black day, for having lost a
great beacon on our voyage to ultimate openness and freedom in knowledge
and wisdom.

Yet, we feel, BabuG has made his life stamped immortal for ever and has
shown us the pathway we should follow in continuing our humble
contributions to the ultimate cause of mankind.

In India, internet connectivity is very poor in semi urban and rural areas

from last 2-3 years this is changing very rapidly thanks to smartphone
revolution. Presently we have millions (soon it may be billion) of
smartphones, primarily Android, in hands of rural young indians. So need of
the hour is to work more on android app which is mostly designed for
viewing rather than editing. In this direction software team still has
miles to go. And I can bet this is the future of wiki, especially in India.
If this issue is not handled NOW, it may be late to attract new generation.

We must also try to convince phone manufacturers and marketers to bundle
Wiki english and Indian languages wiki to be available as pre-installed
apps on their phones. For them it will be an additional selling point.

 Dear Wikimedians,

We are changing our engineering processes to improve how we engage with
you -- our valued contributors and editors -- around software development.

We are beginning with the collaborative buildout and deployment of
VisualEditor. We are moving community engagement processes and product
decisions into earlier stages of development, and making them iterative. In
a perfect world this process would start prior to feature development, but
in this case VisualEditor is already in-flight, so your participation now
is critical. With your participation, we can work together to ensure this
 new process works.

In this new process, we commit to:

 • Collectively identify success criteria for each target audience, from
new editors (simple feature set) to expert editors (complex feature set).
 • Ensure success criteria represents the quantified and qualified goals.
The feature will only be shipped when the success criteria is met.
 • Enable the feature for only portions of specific audiences that would
best benefit (a process known as “incremental roll-out”) at a time.
 • Triage and prioritize all bugs and feature requests on a weekly basis
to ensure they are addressed in a timely fashion. Publicly post responses,
assessment, and target implementations. This will replace the RFP process
and ensure we are tracking on all requested features efficiently.

 How you can engage:

 • Report bugs or enhancement requests in Phabricator:
 https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/tag/visualeditor/
 • Join any of the weekly triage meetings to nominate a release blocker.
 Please see the instructions at:
 https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Talk:VisualEditor/Portal
 • Participate in development. You can find the team on IRC in the
 #mediawiki-visualeditor channel on irc.freenode.net.

We are excited to get this long-standing feature to the level of quality
and success we all want and need. It is a collective effort. You are not
only a stakeholder, but an active contributor in this work. We want to all
to be proud of the outcome. Please participate now.

 All my best,

 Damon

After reading what you intend to do with the scanner, I think you can do a

I, for instance, scan documents using my phone, which fortunately, has 20
megapixel. I use the software called Camscanner[1] which works well on
Android. It allows converting your scanning into PDF and other formats for
 safe keeping.

Of course you don't need a 20 megapixel camera to scan documents.
Somewhere 8 to 12 megapixel is enough to get HD quality of documents, if
 that's what you're aiming for.

Though not scanning,[2] I could get some nice pictures with just with my
phone, just to show that, with careful orientation, you can scan, even
 better documents with your phone

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] WMIN Executive committee elections 2014 announcement

2014-10-20 Thread വിശ്വപ്രഭ
Dear Praveenp,

With all due respects to you as one of the most contributing and persistent
Wikipedian (I must say probably the staunchest of the backbones of
Malayalam Wikipedia), I must now respond here as a member of the WMIN
Executive Committee, a colleague at ml.wikipedia as well as a good friend
of both of you..

Despite whatever personal issues between you and Anivar, I can vouch that
Anivar too have been contributing to the Wikimedia causes in his own ways
for some time now. You may not see it through the number of edits or such
statistics, but his timely involvement in many events and projects have
also helped Malayalam Wikisource to stand where it is now. Apart from that,
he has been taking an active and serious interest in the Chapter's mission.

Anivar, Pavithra and DB Srinivasa Rao were selected as the Election
Committee (EleCom) via a very proper protocol by the Executive Committee. *It
was the EC who solicited their help and willingness to be members of the
Election Committee at a time when few were even willing to be members of
the chapter.* Their selection as Election Committee was done even much
before the new (restructured) EC came into form. The then EC had
unanimously passed the resolution to appoint the EleCom without any
conflicts among themselves.

As far as the Wikimedia India Chapter is concerned, our interest in
people's individual issues and relations are clearly limited to the
Chapter's affairs. As I see it, being a member of the EleCom has nothing
much to do with how one may be active or inactive in a rather unrelated
domain, as long as one delivers the performance assumed and expected of his
capacity in the right degree.

I sincerely believe that the history of piques between you and Anivar has
nothing to do with the conducting of WMIN elections in a free and fair
manner. The Chapter would rather concentrate on much more pressing tasks
for which our resources are still running bit of a short as of now.

It is embarrassing to have to respond to such messages (that should be of
interest in scope, to only the Chapter circles), at this honorable list,
being primarily an open mail list for Indian Wikimedia projects. In the
first place, that the announcement is also copied on to this list was
purely with an intention to make as many Chapter members as possible.to be
aware of the upcoming elections. Beyond that, anyone is welcome to ponder
upon further affairs at the chapter's wiki itself, with a record and
history.

I also take this opportunity to urge Praveen and others to take a more
long-standing interest in the chapter, be an active member there and get
more involved from within, so that we can have even better qualified people
to select from. It really makes a difference when you are inside the system.

May I take that this discussion is now concluded with this message.

:-)

With love to all and malice towards none,
Viswam

contributions. And I know because of my past experience that probably
he will do it again and agian, escaping any answering anywhere.

The ISO 8601 format https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_8601 for date too
corresponds to the same above (-MM-DD) format.

Real advantages of this format are (1) Non-ambiguity, (2) Correct sort
order even when data is processed as pure text and (3) international
consistency

Certainly, this is one of the subset of CLDR too.

I suggest all Wikimedia projects should have this format as default, but
again, customizable per user preferences.

 Hi,

Apart from this, the date formats also needs to be standardised.
In India, we use dd/mm/yy as default. Whereas most editors outside
India (but editing Indian languages wiki) use mm/dd/yy format. This
 cause huge confusions. eg. 09/10/14 is 09 Oct 14 or 10 Sep 14. A
simpler and better way could be to standardise the display on the
pages to dd-mmm- date formats and hh:mm:ss am/pm local timezone.
This could be same for any IP based editing but at the same time,
logged in users should have their own preferences in their settings.

Not sure how much this is already implemented. If not done earlier,
could be taken up for implementation.

Because of this mail I did this for Maharashtra, Himachal and Uttarkhand.

When the Hindi, Punjabi or Marathi Wikipedia have categories that include
the members of a parliament, it is fairly easy to add all the humans who
are mentioned in this category.. Human in the sense of Wikidata.. There is
no secret sauce; I use Autolist2 to do this and, I have documented my way

What would be good is to copy the data that is currently in Excel

[Wikimediaindia-l] Who is moderating India Mailing list ?

2014-09-15 Thread വിശ്വപ്രഭ
With sufficient evidences, as apparent as they seem to be, I must introduce
this issue to you all.

The India mailing list is controlled by a few people, of whom no one ever
was thinking evil. However, it is time to review and see who really
controls this mail list!

I request all recipients to wake up and ask the same questions:

1. Who all control the mail list and moderate it?
2. What has been the criteria of their selection? How long they should
remain as administrators to the list?
3. Why should mails go selectively passed and selectively discarded?
4. How come very stale mail messages come after almost a month, just when
they could significantly be more relevant (or more damaging a particular
positive cause) with a changed /new scenario?

I propose few more 'acceptable' members are added to the admin list. And
even to get rid of people whom the general community does not probably
trust any more.

We don't want any more vicious infestations to damage the 'India' context
of Wikimedia cause.

 Dear Srikanth,

Looks like people are really having thorough knowledge of the MOA. I
wish if they could spend more time in actual working instead of
 studying the MOA.

From what ever you have said and considering the resignations of 3
members including the President in the recent past, on the face of it,
it seems to me that these 3 people were completely aware of the facts
about the number game and they wanted to stall the operations of WMIN
by deliberate resignations. None of the resignations have any strong
justifications given. In fact, Pranav has not uttered a word about any
 reason.

It is a shame that EC members are fighting like this on a public
mailing list and not updating the members (and the community at large)
on what is happening behind the scenes. ( I am following up with the
EC for more than a few months and not getting any response from them.
Probably, all of them were actually trying to do a shutdown that time)

Whatever the current EC is doing, let them do the work in their own
way and instead of saying that their decisions are void, if you wish,
you can go to the authorities and file a complaint about it. If you do
not want to get into that, just keep quiet and do some positive work
 for the chapter.

A new draft is being prepared, (stemmed from your draft, thank you,
Srikanth), incorporating additional details conforming to international
standards for non-profit organizations. Within a day or two, this draft
will be presented in the chapter Wiki for review, discussion and

The draft will be retrieved back to the EC and will be finally vetted and
approved as a standard core document during the upcoming Board Meeting on
20,21 September 2014 at Bangalore.

Also, you mentioned a board meeting in September. Does this indicate the
AGM or just the four core EC members.

The board meeting on 20,21 at Bangalore is a board meeting. It will take up
and decide on the matter of AGM / Elections in such a way as to conduct the
same at the earliest possible date, as early as the stipulated timelines
and documentation requirements (mainly completion of Audit Report and
Annual Report) will allow. It will also review and decide on the voting
eligibility requirements of all chapter members who are members of the
chapter. Further, it will decide on several administrative policies, of
which, a major one will be the feasibility of enlistment of all members
(with bare minimum personal data) on the chapter wiki. Some of these
decisions will be acted upon immediately after the meeting.

The EC is also seriously corroborating on the feasibility of publishing
every minutes and resolutions passed during its business except for the
ones require confidential privacy.

In the meanwhile, we also intend to invite suggestions for modifications
and improvements in the bye-laws and other documents via discussions on the
member wiki. Such suggestions, will be finely filtered and drafted,
presented and voted upon during the AGM and will be passed if approved by
a two third majority.

I say four because Nikita had not renewed her membership as of the first of
July 2014 thus ceasing to be a member of the chapter let alone an EC

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Many user groups instead of One Chapter?

2014-09-06 Thread വിശ്വപ്രഭ
Dear all,

Having intensively spent more than two years within the chapter and many
more years within one of the better performing communities, I would like to
input a few points:

1. *Despite its being a single large political entity, India is a diverse
heterogeneous amalgam of umpteen cultures, thought schools, social habits
and community pride.*

2. The one statement above is the prime point to be considered when any
sort of plans and road maps are drawn for missions like Wikimedia projects. *It
is very very important that everyone, both within India and outside,
realize this.*

3. Due to this, any plans should have two such perspectives:
 (1) an overall national outlook that will take care of legal and other
governance or assistance that is collectively beneficial to the entire
country; and
 (2) a view that ensures and focus on each community with due
considerations onto its own Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and
Threats.

4. A strong chapter (with a large number of members and strong
representation of the actual Wikimedia community volunteers) is a definite
instrument that can take care of the first goal.

The chapter can be strong only if it proves its value, worthiness, openness
and long term sustainability. The community should feel that the chapter is
not an authority over them, but only an assisting agency that is bound by
the might of the community at large and that does not cross its preset
limits towards the almost anarchic freedom the community enjoys.

5. However, own experience so far yields to me that despite the hard work
committed by many souls, the chapter has difficulty in (1) growing itself
up and (2) reaching out to the communities. Both these objectives are
mutually dependent and anything that can help either, will eventually help
and complement the other. In addition, every community member should be
able to develop trust and confidence in the chapter. This too, is an added
outcome of a large (populous) democracy.

6. Many user groups (each within a community of a particular language,
theme, interest, geography or occupation) is a very potential but missing
link.

User groups can exist and flourish in numbers and individual strength, at
a layer that is just midway between the Chapter and Communities. [Chapters
have high legal and administrative bindings, procedural obligations etc.
but they also enjoy representative authority, financial and logistic
resources and structured organizational and professional efficiency; On
the other hand, communities are, as always, wild, uncontrollable,
unpredictable and untameable, yet innovative and 'working' on their own.
They are the real juice of the mission, with no doubt ever.]

7. So, in brief, according to the lessons as I have learnt so far,

In India, we must have ONE very strong, populous, democratically just,
self-sustained chapter and many User Groups supported and built by
individual communities from the bottom side as well as by the Chapter and /
or WMF and other entities from the topside.

8. The Chapter can find its own active, efficient and inevitable role,
acting as a national umbrella organization, coordinating and
interconnecting the User Groups, communities and discrete community
members, in addition to acting as a gateway between them and the higher ups
(say WMF, Government and other institutions).

9. What if there is no chapter?

The Chapter is needed. Without an umbrella organizations, different
communities may have different rates of growth. While one community may be
vibrant, self-sustaining and growing wonderfully, another feeble one may be
left unattended and die all by itself. The chapter can see to it that every
baby gets its milk, to the fill of the bottle it deserves.

The chapter is also the most efficient way to work on tasks of a national
scale. As a significant institution, it may be able to influence the
factors that decide the fate of knowledge empowerment and emanicipation in
future India.

10. Should we desist from forming User Groups?

No! The user groups can be much more fun, efficient, communicative and
motivating to the communities. The user groups must be promoted in every
way that is possible, but still with very careful and tactical, but
minimal controls ensuring basic compliance for purposes of financial
freedom and other benefits. However, their numbers may be limited into
convenient degrees to ensure good balance between mutual freedom and
quantitative sustenance.

Thank you.

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Calendars in use in India

2014-01-15 Thread വിശ്വപ്രഭ
A great topic, I am particularly interested in!

I have worked some solid 3-4 months to compute almost all calendars of
Indian traditions. Part of my ambition is to create a page in every Indian
Wiki for each year of the CE era, along with the corresponding calendars
in each Indian almanacs. This will involve a lot of references, computation
and 'wiki'fication of which, the first two parts are almost completed.

Let me keep a track of this thread. May we even form up a small project
group on this?

calendars, months end on the Full moon day. This difference really make
months different, and thus many festivals though celebrated on the same day
throughout India, are actually marked in different months on religious
 calendars.

E.g. Janmashtami is Shravan Vad (or Krishna paksh) ashtami in Gujarati

Also, Kartik or Kartak is the first month of year, while in other

What I want to know is if these months exactly are at the same time or
not. Many calendars have special days. It would make sense to have an item

Are there people who can help me with this ?

It is very important to read this too along with the news:

The officials wanted to grab the photographs, but without any attributions

in costly or otherwise Govt. publications, promptly and sacredly credited
to the photographers employed by the department of forests or tourism.

As for Wikimedia, we had our Wiki Vana Vijnjana Yatra, (Wiki Jungle

Dear Amir,

The second phase of digitization (i.e. to convert to text) is not yet done.
But like our usual method, this will be completed collectively (read
massively) and rapidly within a few days. We have divided the task among
our little typing army into manageable chunks.

However, phase 1 itself had quite some commendable experiences and hurdles.

During recent times, some of us, particularly, *Shiju Alex*, the well known
Malayalam / Indian Wikipedian, have been on a mission to try and locate as
many volumes of Malayalam books printed ever until 1920s or so. Shiju came
to be aware of the Samkshepa vedartham(SV) copy remaining in the *Dharmaram
Seminary College Library in Bangalore*.

Our friend, (Malayalam Wikipedian) *Jeff Shawn*, an inmate of Dharmaram
Seminary College, managed to get access to the book that was kept quite in
its own qualified shelter for more than two decades, thanks to a very
special and rare library heritage kind to both books and studious readers.

Thanks are due to *Father Thomas kuniyathodathth* and *Father Geo
Pallikkunnel*, being the responsible powers of the library for granting
permission to scan the book.

The library provided the book for scanning. A 240 year old pulp produce
(that was kept in the aggressive tropical climates of South India, much
unlike those lucky volumes in the library of congress) had to be treated
with much respect and care.

The Library Assistant of Dharmaram seminari Library, Mr. *Shyju* helped
scan the book with all the care it called for. His meticulous work produced
sufficiently high resolution image of each spread (two pages at once) of
the 290 page volume.

These files were then to be processed. The images were shared by us over
the internet. *Shiju*, myself and *Kevin Siji *spent quite some hard time
to work on this process ensuring recovery of all possible kinds of
information (including tears, book-worm patches, hand-written notes and
stains). We produced several versions of the volume catering to different
uses ( HQ color/grey scale/monochrome, smaller but easily portable PDFs
etc.). The wonderfully fuzzy-intelligent Scan tailor program (
http://sourceforge.net/projects/scantailor/) helped us extensively during
this phase. We also ran several stages of *Imagemagick* software to
accomplish the results.

Finally, the output was uploaded by Shiju Alex to archive.org (
https://archive.org/stream/Samkshepavedartham_1772/samkshepavedartham_1772)
and also to ml.wikisource.org

We now plan to complete the text conversion phase within a few weeks.

As for the Unicode encoding:
The style and practice of writing / printing Malayalam script had changed
quite a bit during the 240+ years. However, most of the characters required
to type this in are already in the Unicode keymaps. There are a few
exceptions, though. We will come to know the precise details (of extra key
code requirements etc.) in the coming days.

Thanks and regards,

ViswaPrabha

A brief account about the Workshop as a participant.

The workshop was meant as a DIY digitization without having to invest in a
scanner and to use a simple digital camera for effective digitization of
 books and documents.

The following were covered during the Workshop by Viswaprabha, who mainly
led this workshop, along with Subhashish (who was trained by Viswaprabha
 beforehand) and Shiju Alex:
 a) Best practices in capturing images using a camera and tripod through
 demonstration; intro to types of scanners;
 b) how to hold books and the need to treat old books with respect; (very
 critical)
 c) discussion on image formats and some basic comparison (i.e. djvu, PDF,
 JPEG, TIFF, BMP, GIF);
 d) Introduction and practical use of SM Tether (using Nikon dSLR) in
 capturing images;
 e) Practical demonstration of using Scan Tailor (a Free Software) in
post-processing of scanned pages. Splitting, Deskewing, Rearranging
borders, De-speckling of scanned pages; f) some basic discussion on
 Copyright and introduction to Wiki Source;
 g) importance of online archival resources (DLI, DSAL, Archive.org, etc)
and when to do or not to redo scanning of books (i.e. image resolution)
 that are already available in scanned format;
 h) OCR and Indian languages.

Basically the workshop focused on how an 'ordinary' Wikimedian without
access to high tech infrastructure can effectively undertake digitization
of old books (especially in Indian languages) in a collaborative manner and
use Wiki Source to openly share this knowledge.

This was an impromptu workshop that was suddenly decided because of the
availability of Viswaprabha (WMIN EC member), who was in Bangalore for WMIN
EC meetings. It was also conceptualized as an Alpha stage presentation and
meant to be improved further. All the participants were asked to better the
presentation, in true Wiki style, Viswa made all the participants also the
 authors.

I think it was a successful workshop, especially since I had personally
witnessed how much money various institutions and govt. are spending on
ineffective digitization. Such similar 'small-scale' workshops can
potentially empower interested Wikimedians and can create a decentralized,
effective, need-based collaborative digitization of books (our cultural
 heritage), especially in Indian languages.

The workshop was collaboratively organized by WMIN and CIS-A2K and no
expenditure other than coffee and snacks was incurred. Going forward it
wold be useful to further improve this presentation collaboratively,
preferably by practice than by discourse. Also to train atleast 3-4
Wikimedians from each language community across India, who can further
 impart this knowledge to others.

 Best,
 Vishnu

Konkani belongs to somewhat a unique class of Wikimedia languages where
many scripts may be used for the same content. Not exclusive, this list
includes at least English, Devanagari, Kannada and Malayalam.

The ideal goal in the case of a Konkani Wikimedia project is to have an
input system in any script from the above set as the user prefers and then
also to render the output in any script from the above set. The content
itself may be stored in some particular script or code space.

If I remember correctly, there have been several discussions in possible
techniques and tools to enable such a feature. Amir (Amir Elisha Aharoni ·
אָמִיר אֱלִישָׁע אַהֲרוֹנִי), Shiju Alex or Santhosh Thottingal may be able
to enlighten us more about this.

This may also be the case for Sanskrit, as Sanskrit used to be scribed in
different scripts (other than just in devanagari) in different regions.
Perhaps, we should even have a Harward-Kyoto transliterated version for
Sanskrit.

On an even more ambitious scale, I dream about each Indic language being
available for input and output in every other Indic scripts. (Imagine
someone in Kerala trying to read and practice a Bengali poem without having
to know the Bengali script itself, and vice versa.)

How long a haul this could be? Asking out of curiosity.

Of course, this depends upon the amount of synergy we put in. In terms of
computing technology, this should not be a problem at all. But someone will
have to conceive and design a basic framework and engine (like an
MVChttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MVC_modelmodel) that can be used
with a common back end repository for contents in
all languages. There shall be 100% accurate and lossless reversible
script-to-script translation maps working on real time (at the instances of
inputting and rendering).

Some possible obstacles, as it occurs to me:

1. Increased server/browser load due to the additional processing

2. Incompatibilities and non-uniqueness between scripts. (For eg: Some
languages have letters / phonemes that are not available in some other
languages, [eg. ഴ (a sound/letter in Malayalam)( ಳ / ழ/ ళ)
3. Availability of enough multi-lingual experts to verify the quality of
such translations

4. Implementation of long-term standards and version control.

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Number of Admin users in Indic Wikipedias

2013-01-11 Thread വിശ്വപ്രഭ
Just for your info if it will help devise effective strategies:

*Continuance of Administrative privileges*

In Malayalam, we have a periodical assessment of active Admins. Some of
them are very very active (almost round the clock!). Some are frequenting
on monthly or seasonally waving cycles of crests and troughs. Really very
few are inactive over a long span.

During such talk page assessments, we discuss if someone (who has been idle
for a long time) needs to be demoted from their Admin status. The general
consensus is not to strictly enforce such demotions but to request them to
relinquish the status by themselves. Most often, they agree to this.

The practice of such self-relinquishing of long time idle admins is to
avoid a potential security risk of someone else stealing their wikimedia
user login credentials and misuse the extra privileges.

If one such ex-admin would like to take back his admin role later (as he
finds more time to get involved), he only need to put up a simple request
at the concerned voting page. The request is almost automatically approved
by other admins without the need of a new election.

As of now, we have a satisfactory ratio between the number of admins and
active users.

*Harvesting new admins*

Instead of an abrupt promotion to the status of a sysop or bureaucrat, we
encourage a gradual elevation of an active, self-motivated neutral and
dedicated user. Others closely watch the activities of a new user and, in
time, grants extra privileges (like Auto Patrol, Roll back etc.). Later,
taking several parameters (like count and quality of editing, talks etc.),
someone proposes him to be a new sysop. Voting is done as per protocols and
then he becomes an admin.

Off the Wikimedia interface, these admins interact and consult mutually
very frequently through list mails or threaded mails on a case to case
basis.

So far, these models have proved themselves to be very effective,
manageable and scalable.

Hindi has only 4, followed by Bengali and Marathi with 10 and Telugu and
 Malayalam with 18.

If you discount the inactive admin users, the count can be very low to
 maintain the quality.

In Tamil Wikipedia, we make sure to run admin elections regularly. We
choose around 4 admins every year and don't hesitate to nominate promising
newcomers. This helps to share work load, give a break for wikiholics and
provide a sense of belonging for the whole community. In the beginning
days, most of the founding members got admin access within few weeks of
meaningful contribution and this good will has never failed.

Unless there are other compelling reasons for this low count of admin
users, I urge every community to nominate / self-nominate good contributors
 and make them admins.

As Srikanth correctly pointed it out, such an ID would be under the

I remember a couple of years ago, Wikinews tried this for their active
editors, offering to print them 'official reporter' IDs. It was an idea
 at

For photographers, this would be the commons community. This shouldn't
 be
too hard, I suggest someone mentioning the political situation and
suggesting this for commons photographers in the VP. The great thing is
since, it would be the community who would award it, there is little or
 no
direct liability to an official body. There should however be a
 contribution
record or an endorsement from someone to print these out.

One thing the chapter can do however, is offer a special
member/photographers ID to the existing members. This could be at a
surcharge so they don't undertake any expense- they can print out
 plastic
IDs with photos, and membership detail of the existing members. This ID
might be able to suffice for the purpose.

I don't think that the card should necessarily be printed at a
 centralised
location. In fact, I don't even think this is desirable (from security
 and
logistics viewpoints). It should be fairly simple to 'approve' a
 request for
accreditation (framework discussed already), then lead to a web-based
one-time card generator that the user can print and laminate herself. In
case of problems printing, the user should have a fallback option to
 report
the failure, in order to enable a second attempt for the card to be
 printed.

2012-01-12 Thread വിശ്വപ്രഭ
If there is money for such celebrations, let us impart it for some very
simple things:

What about just printing the Wikipedia logo stickers abundantly and
distributing it among relevant circles?

Just getting the common man to acquaint with the logo itself will be a very
effective outreach! I can say this from my own experience since two months
and 20 stickers!

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Towards improving infrastructure or resource people on Wikipedia

2011-12-12 Thread വിശ്വപ്രഭ
I would like to stress again that what we need first is to interconnect
ourselves.

We, at various Indic Wikipedias, are still working very much on our own
home islands!

Images, references, PR personnel, media - Among various Indic Wikipedias,
we have a lot that can be shared together.

Beyond the singular difference of native language, our needs, ends and
means are mostly same.

[Not to mention that (in.en.wiki*) is automatically a subset of (in.wiki*)]

So,

let us think aloud how to interconnect ourselves more systematically and
collectively.

Though many may have reservations in using social networking as a tool, we
at Malayalam Wikipedia have been using Facebook, Blogs, Google Buzz/Plus/
Docs/Maps/Calendar etc. somewhat effectively to improve and accelerate
content and quality of ml.wiki*.

(As an example, see this spreadsheet (Geodesic Coords for
ml.wikipedia)https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/pub?hl=en_UShl=en_USkey=0AkzufXP7aCjEdGxvdmw5U2VwTThiUFVLZjVVWVY0dUEoutput=html,
It has been just created today as an upcoming collaboration tool for
GeoTagging our articles in a massive way. We envisage that the same data
can be later shared with other Wikipedias in some automated way. If only we
had a larger national network, we could achieve this much faster and
wider!!)

*What if we setup some similar acts for Inter-Indic Wiki friendship circles
(Where every in.wiki user can join and share their problems, solutions and
ideas)?*

 with
social media (I know the sterling job that Tinu does in this area, but
 more

coders, having more people who are aware of the legal aspects, having
 more

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Sharing insights and experiences from Indian language wiki communities - Kannada

2011-12-10 Thread വിശ്വപ്രഭ
That is not always true. Even the apparently (for us) easy pages on
English Wikipedia are too technical for a would-be enthusiatic neo wiki
editor as he/she just steps into editing attempts even after a long
experience of reading wikipedia.

I can wow on to this as I have met many such people who would, at first
'dare into editing' often at the forceful prompting of an experienced user,
but soon withdraw.
To them, there seems to be too may syntax formalities and restricting rules
and regulations.

The same people, if continuously and intensively supported by an
experienced one, crosses the learning curve quite fast and become able to
stand on his own as an independent contributor.

I sincerely think that there is a clear need of preparing and showcasing a
Real Idiot's Guide to early Wikipedia editing. Perhaps, we do not realize
such lack of user-friendliness ourselves as most of us have come away a
long way from that stage.

Kannada with more than 4 crore speakers and is one of the 22 scheduled
languages of india. Kannada is primarily spoken in the Indian state
 Karnataka.

Kannada Wikipedia has a very interesting heritage. This is the
community that started Wiki outreach programs in India. In fact, the first
Indic wiki workshop that I am aware of was organized by HPN way back in
2004! A lot of interesting things happened for a while and there was a
time when Kannda has a vibrant 40+ strong community.

However, off late, things appear to have slowed down and the number of
active editors is on a relative decline. Having said that, the seeds have
already been sown in this community and I am confident that with a little
nurturing, we can see activism in Kannada wikipedia coming back. I am
basing my optimism on Kananda Wiktionary -where the community has taken it
to the 2nd largest wiktionary in the country. There is much activism
happening around kannada wiktionary. In Kannada wikipedia I got opportunity
to interact with high prolific editors like User:Radhatanaya who is
 silently doing wonderful job.

Kannada wikipedia has more than 11,000 articles now and kannada
wiktionary has whopping 1,50,000 entries (making it the second biggest
 Wiktionary among Indic language wiktionaries).

Kindly read the experience of Kannada Wikimedians at:

Most of the trade names listed in Wikipedia are those from the US or
