[Wikisource-l] Re: 2021 report

2021-12-01 Thread Bodhisattwa Mandal
Hi Ankry, Asaf and all,

On behalf of West Bengal Wikimedians User Group (WBG), I can send formal
request to Wikisource User Group to become a partner in all Wikisource
related events organized by WBG. For last 4 years, WBG had been running
several proofread contests and campaigns on Bengali Wikisource, bringing
GLAM institutional and other partnerships and generating general awareness
around Wikisource and if it requires a formal declaration to involve
Wikisource user group into these initiatives, we will be very happy to do
that. We will not ask anything in return but if some expertise, guidance
and connections are provided by Wikisource user group members at those
events, that would be great for us.
All WBG events related to Wikisource will then can be easily incorporated
into Wikisource user group annual reports in future without any issue.

If this proposal seems OK to you all, please let me know and I will start
the process from our side as soon as possible.

Regards,
Bodhisattva

[Wikisource-l] 2nd proofread contest in collaboration with British Library ended today on Bengali Wikisource

2021-11-30 Thread Bodhisattwa Mandal
Hello,

As you might know, the Two Centuries of Indian Print (2CIP) project of
British Library and West Bengal Wikimedians User Group are having a GLAM
partnership for almost a year now. The 2CIP collection of public domain
Bengali books are getting uploaded on Wikimedia Commons and then getting
proofread on Bengali Wikisource. Details can be found here -
https://bn.wikisource.org/s/h1zc

In this regard. two long proofread contests had been organized this year to
let Bengali Wikisource volunteers focus on these books. The first contest
was held during March-April this year. (Link -
https://bn.wikisource.org/s/gwek ) The second proofread contest which ran
for 3 months from September 1, 2021 to November 30, 2021 just ended at
midnight. (Link - https://bn.wikisource.org/s/gwen .) In these two
contests, around 5500 pages were proofread in total.

We will not conduct any more proofread contests this year or early next
year giving break to our competition participants. Considering our small
workforce, we will also utilise this break to clear our maintenance
backlogs as much as possible. The GLAM partnership will go on by having
more 2CIP books uploaded on Commons, engaging with OpenRefine team to help
build a robust system for book uploads along with metadata management,
engaging with WMF community programs and machine learning teams to find
ways to negotiate with Transkribus etc. and so on. A full activity report
will be published soon in February next year by the user group.

[Wikisource-l] Re: 2021 report

2021-11-19 Thread Bodhisattwa Mandal
Hi Asaf,

Personally I have always felt while reading the previous annual activity
reports that the Wikisource user group operates more like a thematic hub of
Wikisource communities rather than an affiliate itself. Many affiliates and
communities who organize Wikisource related events and projects come
together and write their stories in the Wikisource user group annual
reports, even if there had been no formal communications with Wikisource
user group for those events. I think, that is totally fine considering the
special place for Wikisource user group in all Wikisource communities.

Bodhisattwa

[Wikisource-l] Proofread competition starts on Bengali Wikisource in collaboration with British Library

2021-08-31 Thread Bodhisattwa Mandal
Hello all,

We are excited to announce a 3-months long proofread competition which will
run on Bangla Wikisource from September 1 to November 30, 2021 as a result
of an ongoing GLAM collaboration between the Two Centuries of Indian Print
(2CIP) project of the British Library (BL) and the West Bengal Wikimedians
User Group (WBG). This is the second proofread competition under the GLAM
project, the first one happened in March-April.

The event page of the competition is here - https://bn.wikisource.org/s/gwen
(in Bangla)
The GLAM event page is here - https://bn.wikisource.org/s/gt5i (also in
Bangla)

Under the project, 2CIP officials will be uploading public domain Bangla
books from their collection on Wikimedia Commons and our volunteers will
take care of the rest of the work from indexing, proofreading, transcluding
etc. on Wikisource along with building their data on Wikidata. The prizes
to the top 5 winners for this competition will be sent by WBG and BL will
send digital certificates to each one of them.

For those who are interested to learn more about the project, there is a
video recording of the Wikimania session on this -

Hello all,

Is it ok for all, if I book slot(s) at Wikimania Unconference

meetup? If yes, what would be the preferred date and time? Or can we have
multiple meetups to accommodate all timezones?

The tables in the Unconference can only accommodate 20 people max. So, if
there are enough interested Wikisourcers, multiple tables can also be
booked for a given period of time, but the inherent structure of the Remo
platform will prevent inter-table interaction among participants, which is
the only disadvantage.

Please share your thoughts on how to move forward.

Re: [Wikisource-l] Automatic text tagging and annotation

2020-07-28 Thread Bodhisattwa Mandal
Amir,

Coming from a community with not much volunteer force, I actually want any
strategy which involves minimal human interference into the tagging
process, as we can't afford to spread our thin line.

Your first option looks more inclined to what I was trying to say. However,
I understand that there will be possibilities of errors or ambiguities and
need some level of human check system anyway.

Personally, I would love the third option but looks like it requires more
engineering than the other two, forgive me if I am wrong. So considering
the lack of initiatives in this area in the past, I would stick to the
first one as a more practical approach for now.

Bodhisattwa

Re: [Wikisource-l] [Brand Project] Next naming phase

2020-06-18 Thread Bodhisattwa Mandal
Hi Nicolas,

I don't think our voices really matter in this case. Check the RfC, people
are still voting against 'Wikipedia' as a brand name, but the survey has
only one option which is three variants of Wikipedia. It doesn't even have
the option of status quo. This is very frustrating to say, but this is the
truth that we cannot change anything through this survey or participating
in the process, as the outcome is already decided. The process is just an
eye-wash to show that the community was consulted.

Personally I feel, this whole process is completely biased, pre-decided and
non-transparent. There is no point wasting time here.

Bodhisattwa

Re: [Wikisource-l] Memorandum of Understanding with NDLI, CIS and WMF

2020-03-14 Thread Bodhisattwa Mandal
Hi Om,

Thanks for your concern. Yes, the problem of copyright with different
Indian digital libraries collection is quite well known. The most famous
example is the Digital Library of India, which was closed down due to
copyright infringement.

The difference between NDLI and other Indian digital libraries is that NDLI
primarily acts as a portal and link for different digital libraries.
Sometimes, materials which are not otherwise accessible because of
different restrictions in different digital libraries can be accessed when
we login through NDLI. This is because specific contracts are signed
between NDLI and those digital libraries.

So, unlike other digital libraries, they do not host the copyrighted
material on their website. They just link to other websites, from where you
can get the content.

Bodhisattwa

Hi Asaf,

We acknowledge your concern.

When we had meetings with NDLI, we specifically discussed about "their
contents" to be published under CC-BY-SA, if we are going to include them
on Wikimedia Commons and they primarily agreed on that. They have very good
knowledge about different Creative Commons license terms and they are one
of the advocates of RightsStatements license, so it was easier to talk
about these areas with them.

I hope, we can sort this issue out. Let's see.

Hi Ilario,

If you check this link <https://ndl.iitkgp.ac.in/faq>, you can find it
written at the Terms and Conditions section - *The actual contents are
subject to the copyright laws of the respective data providers as the
authors or publishers retain copyright to these works which are used by NDL
India with permission.*

It is the practice for any government agency like NDLI to sign a MoU or
other form of contracts with other organizations, before engaging with them
in any way. Although I can't speak for NDLI, but it is extremely likely
that they have partnered with Worldebooklibrary and others officially.

2020-03-14 Thread Bodhisattwa Mandal
Hi Nicolas,

Thanks for your reply and interest in the partnership.

It was discussed during the Delhi meeting that as a first step, NDLI will
come up with a unique authority control for the authors listed in their
website and we will match them with corresponding Wikidata items, thus
starting to link Wikidata content with NDLI website. The process was
expected to initiate from January, but due to some other other commitments
from NDLI as a government agency, it has not been started yet.

As a major part of this partnership will largely depend on the data model
stated in Wikidata WikiProject Books
<https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:WikiProject_Books>, we need works
and their editions on different Wikisource projects properly linked with
Wikidata exactly following the data model. For Indian language Wikisources,
I can say, the linkages are still very low. It would be great, if we can
collaboratively engage as many as Wikisource communities as possible to
start linking their contents on Wikidata. We definitely need suggestions
and all kinds of help there organizing this.

We appreciate if highly experienced community members like you share inputs
and insight w.r.t. this collaboration. Please feel free to do so
pro-actively at any time.

Regards,
Bodhisattwa

[Wikisource-l] Memorandum of Understanding with NDLI, CIS and WMF

2020-03-14 Thread Bodhisattwa Mandal
Hi all,

It gives us immense pleasure to announce to the Wikimedia community
that National
Digital Library of India
 (NDLI),
Centre for Internet and Society (CIS) and Wikimedia Foundation (WMF) have
signed a tripartite non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for a
2-years partnership. National Digital Library of India is a Ministry of
Human Resource Development

project, developed at IIT Kharagpur

which aims to build a virtual repository of learning resources and
literature metadata.

Through this understanding, we will work together on:

   - integrating Wikisource and Wikidata contents on NDLI website.

   - building up technical infrastructure on NDLI website to crowdsource
metadata curation on Wikidata and proofreading on Wikisource websites.
   - importing relevant contents and data from NDLI website to Wikidata and
   Wikisource.
   - identifying and pursuing collaboration opportunities around other
   Wikimedia projects, such as Wikibooks.

After months of discussion among the three parties, the understanding was
finalized during International Symposium on Knowledge Engineering for
Digital Library Design 2019, an international
conference organized collaboratively by NDLI and UNESCO at IIT Delhi
, where
WMF was a technical partner.

Many apologies for cross-posting the announcement in different relevant
mailing lists.

[Wikisource-l] A new book reader/viewer is live for us!

2019-12-12 Thread Bodhisattwa Mandal
Hi list,

It was proposed in 2016 Community Wishlist to implement the
open-source Internet
Archive Book Reader in
Commons and Wikisource (see this phab ticket
).

A couple of days back, User:Jayprakash12345 has created a tool
based on that request (see this
phab ticket ). To get a glimpse
of what this new reader looks like, check the reader

for this book.

I think, we can now start a discussion whether this reader should be the
default reader for Wikisource or Commons replacing the existing reader
which is suitable for pictures but has limitations for viewing book.

Bodhisattwa

Re: [Wikisource-l] Wikisource at the Wikimedia Summit 2020

2019-12-10 Thread Bodhisattwa Mandal
Hi Nicolas,

In this summit, we need an experienced Wikisourcer who can strongly
advocate for the project, so that the project and it's communities does not
get left behind or forgotten during the implementation phase of strategy.
This year, we need to send someone who can opine in the implementation
discussion in such a way, that it is at least ensured on paper, that
Wikisource will get the support it deserves. It is also needed to
strategize for Wikisource for future w.r.t. knowledge equity.

Personally I think, you are one of the best persons, we have, to represent
the entire community and if you decide to go, you have my very strong
support.

Regards,
Bodhisattwa

 Hi,

To make it clear, I'm candidate to go to the Summit.
I'm not sure if I'm the best person to represent this user group (UG)
as the Summit is a « focused event for conversations on Movement Strategy »
and I'm not always good at Strategy (especially for such a broad group like
this UG, indeed we need priorities, hence this meeting ;) ). That said, I
have a long experience of Wikisource, I was the representative for this UG
in 2018 so I'm not the worst person either ;)

For the meeting, I'm also available this week. I guess to gather the
most people sunday at 1 pm UTC (13:00) is probably the best for everyone (

[Wikisource-l] Community conversation with Roles and Responsibilities working group

2019-04-30 Thread Bodhisattwa Mandal
Hi all,

As you all know that, the Wikimedia movement strategy working groups

have started working on the final stage of the process i.e. building
recommendations, which are supposed to be delivered by November this year.
The only step that will be remaining after that will be implementing the
recommendations by WMF next year. These recommendations will significantly
change the movement in the future, even the least radical ones might have
impact on the movement which will affect us all in many ways. As a
volunteer serving on one of the working groups, I would like to encourage
you all to take part in the process, so that your dreams and ideas for a
better tomorrow get reflected in the recommendations; your experience,
insight and voices are very much important to shape the future of the
movement.

I am in the Roles and Responsibilities working group
,
which is focusing on the governance and organizational movement structures.
For last few months, we have tried to identify objectively about what are
going well and what are not in the current existing structure, where are
the pain points and where are the happy ones; and we tried to map them as
best as we could. The goal is to identify a future structure for the
Wikimedia Movement that will create less friction and more synergies. To
understand that in a better way, we framed few scoping questions for
community conversation (see here
).

The questions are:

   1. What structures, processes, and behaviors will enable us to include
all voices (including e.g. current contributors and emerging audiences)
   in our decision-making?
   2. Which responsibilities are better placed at a global or local level?
   3. To ensure equity, how should conflict management and resolution
be structured
   across the movement?

You can give your valuable feedback regarding these questions in this
thread or in the village pumps of your wiki projects or in meta

or in a google doc or mail us or in any other way possible. Just let us
know or share with us the links where you are giving feedback or discussing
about these things. If you want to do video chat and document your
feedback, please let us know, we will try our best to fulfill that. If you
do not want to reveal your identity or user name in the public forum, but
still want to document your feedback, please let us know and we will ensure
that. If you need any clarification about these questions or any doubts
about the whole process, you can mail us. Our mailing address is at
wg2030-rolesandresponsibilit...@wikimedia.org . Apart from these questions,
you can share your thoughts about anything with us which you think might
benefit the strategy process or outcome.

Please note, that community conversation is a continuous process and we
will document and work on your valuable feedback whenever you share them
with us till September this year.

[Wikisource-l] Everything will be Wikipedia

2019-02-07 Thread Bodhisattwa Mandal
Hi,

I have heard from a trusted source few months back that there are talks in
WMF to rebrand all sister projects under the name Wikipedia. If that
happens some day, Wikisource will be no more as it is and it will be called
something like Wikipedia-source etc. The logic for this kind of step is
that people doesn't know or understand Wikimedia, but everyone knows only
about Wikipedia.

I think, the recent blog in the Foundation site is the first step to do
such things.
https://wikimediafoundation.org/2019/02/07/how-does-the-world-see-wikimedia-brands/

IMHO, very few people know about sister projects, because they didn't get
the love they needed from WMF or other affiliates. Everything is so
Wikipedia centric. But that can't be the fault of the sister projects.

I hope this rebranding doesnt become true someday.

[Wikisource-l] A new button for OCR

2018-11-24 Thread Bodhisattwa Mandal
Hi,

Jayprakash from IndicTechCom has developed a tool to OCR by using Google
Drive API - https://tools.wmflabs.org/indic-ocr/

The tool can be accessed in Wikisources by loading this js -
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Indic-TechCom/Script/IndicOCR.js

The tool was developed as Google OCR by Cloud Vision API was not supporting
Malayalam, Telugu, Oriya, Gujarati and Kannada. So, the OCR button created
by Community tech was not working for this language Wikisources. The new
button will support these languages as well all other languages supported
by Google Drive API

Also, by introduction of this tool, we now have 4 options to OCR in
Wikisource. :-)

Re: [Wikisource-l] Translation namespaces

2018-04-25 Thread Bodhisattwa Mandal
For example, this translation namespace page
<https://bn.wikisource.org/s/crl> is transcluded from this page
<https://bn.wikisource.org/s/crj> of this index
<https://bn.wikisource.org/s/cr7>. But unlike NS0 pages, the translation
namespace has no link to the NS:page at the side and NS:index at the top.

Re: [Wikisource-l] Wikidata property for non-fiction characters

2018-04-06 Thread Bodhisattwa Mandal
Hi,

In this item <https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q12308313> the property Characters
(P674) <https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Property:P674> has been used for a
non-fiction literary work, whereas the property is said to be related to
works of fiction. Now, I am confused, if P674 is allowed for non-fiction
or not?

I am also finding difficulty to propose a name for the new property for
non-fiction characters, shall it be ''Characters in non-fictions'' or is
there any specific term for it?

Help needed.

2018-03-20 Thread Bodhisattwa Mandal
Hi Sam,

The Google OCR button and the tool
 is giving 500 internal server
error output from today, although the Cloud Vision API is working fine
.

We have reported in phabricator here
. It would be great for us if
you please look into this matter urgently as all our options are suddenly
ceasing to work.

On behalf of West Bengal Wikimedians User Group, I am happy to announce
that Dr. Tapodhir Bhattacharjee, Ex-Vice chancellor of Assam University,

The books are uploaded to Commons and are now in the hands of Bengali and

Update:

The OCR for Bengali using Google Drive API has stopped for pdf and djvu

Shrini and Jayanta is rewriting and testing the OCR4Wikisource script to
convert the files into jpg files.

Looking forward,

Re: [Wikisource-l] Fwd: [Wikimedia-l] Wikimedia Conference 2018 - Registration closes in one month!

2017-12-16 Thread Bodhisattwa Mandal
Hi,

Thank you for considering me, but I won't be able to attend the conference
this year. Also, I think that I am not at all the suitable person to
represent the Wikisource User Group. The best Wikisourcers are there
leading the Wikisource community globally and fighting for language equity
and I have huge respect to all of them. IMO, it would be best for the
project if these awesome Wikimedians represent the UG in the conference.

Jayanta Nath will be representing West Bengal Wikimedians User Group in the
conference officially and he will be there unofficially for Bengali and
other Indic Wikisource projects too. So, as far as non-Western Wikisource
is concerned, there will be at least one representative, for sure. \o/

There is a huge collection of rare books in different languages at the

2. Almost every pages have a scale/ruler beside the scanned page, so we
need to crop each and every page. (attached)

Can anyone please develop a tool (enhanced version of BUB) to process the

Italian Wikisource community had a discussion

to deploy Extension:QrCode <https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:QrCode>
in 2015, but as it was unmaintained, the task
<https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T106792> got stalled.

After some digging, I got two more QRCode extensions.
* QRLite <https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:QRLite>
* Quick Response <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T50329>

Can anyone suggest if one of these can be deployed?

Re: [Wikisource-l] QR Codes for Wikisource texts

2017-07-07 Thread Bodhisattwa Mandal
Hi Ilario,

It's related to digital literacy. Not everyone knows about the process of
online search of books or how to find QR codes.

When readers check small libraries for those books, which the libraries
don't have, they return empty handed. Instead, if we provide the libraries
with QR codes, the readers will be satisfied and libraries can retain their
readers.

Re: [Wikisource-l] QR Codes for Wikisource texts

2017-07-06 Thread Bodhisattwa Mandal
Hi,

There has been significant decline in library readerships in India.
Libraries are remaining almost empty throughout the day. I believe, that is
because, with the increasing usage of internet, there has been a change in
behaviour about reading physical books. People are preferring to remain
online and get information from the internet, rather than to stay in a
library and study there. The libraries are not also coping with this
scenario and not upgrading themselves, and losing readers.

Also, the smart phone penetration in India is also increasing. It has been
estimated almost one third of Indian citizens will use smart phone by 2019
and that's a huge number. Nowadays, many people who do not have computers,
have smartphones with cheaper internet than before. But many of them
doesn't know how to search a book in internet, even if does find some book,
tends to forget the urls, and unfortunately almost nobody knows anything
about Wikisource, even from the academy.

Now, if we have a QR code generation system for Wikisource, we can
collaborate with the town libraries or college libraries, send them the
codes and help them build a QR code library of books. They can give the
codes to readers according to their demands, which will redirect them to
Wikisource. We can also generate QR codes for every book we work on and
upload them to Commons with a suitable title, creating a QR code library
ourselves, thus making the codes google searchable and accessible to the
readers. In every case, the viewership of the site will increase.

[Wikisource-l] QR Codes for Wikisource texts

2017-07-06 Thread Bodhisattwa Mandal
Hi all,

Can we create a Wikisource specific QR code generator tool for the NS0
pages?

People often forget the urls or sometimes doesn't know the way to search
texts in Wikisource. If we can generate qr codes, that would also benefit
libraries from remote places or readers who don't have computers in their
possession .

I think it will definitely increase the viewership of the site to a
significant amount. What's your opinion regarding this?

Dear all,
the WMF is creating a Wikistats 2.0, a new platform for visualizing stats
about project.
The idea is great, because better analytics means better knowledge of the
project and better insights for us the community.

For this week, until next Monday, they are accepting feedbacks:
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Wikistats_2.0_Design_
Project/RequestforFeedback/Round1

I already wrote something about the fact that metrics are always
"wikipedia-centric" and for Wikisource we would need them to "aggregate"
edits at a "book level".

If you agree, please say so in that page ;-)

Re: [Wikisource-l] Vote for Google OCR-Wikisource integration in 2015 community wishlist

2016-02-21 Thread Bodhisattwa Mandal
Hi,

Another alternative is development of open source good quality OCR or
improve existing ones. Many tried in India and Bangladesh to create OCR by
taking Government funds but no one knows what happened to those projects.
We approached some of them but either they were reluctant to show the
results or they did not bother. WMF and WMIN were also approached to
develop the OCR, but we were said that they possess no such infrastructure
and expertise to run the project.

Besides, developing new OCR will take a lot of time and we can't postpone
our Wikisource projects based on it. We have already waited for a long time
for a good quality OCR. Few months ago, we were typing every page of a
novel word by word and that was our only way of proofreading. :-) But
that's past now.

We always hope to get better alternatives and if we find any, we will
definitely try to pursue it.

Re: [Wikisource-l] Vote for Google OCR-Wikisource integration in 2015 community wishlist

2016-02-19 Thread Bodhisattwa Mandal
Hi,

The OCR4Wikisource script is evolving heavily. Already more than 1,50,000
pages have been OCRed in both Tamil and Bengali Wikisource using the
OCR4Wikisource script. The idea and the tool proved to be a game-changer
for Indic Wikisource projects.

And when we were getting some hope, Google announced that they will charge
for doing OCR using their drive.
https <https://cloud.google.com/vision/>://
<https://cloud.google.com/vision/>cloud.google.com
<https://cloud.google.com/vision/>/vision/
<https://cloud.google.com/vision/>

Is there any chance that WMF will go for negotiation with Google so that we
can do the mass OCR free of charge? I remember Asaf once told that this
possibility can be pursued. I think, now is the time to do that.

Regards,
Yeah!
I'm really happy that the BUB tool is resurrecting, and for the new OCR
script. Thanks everyone!

Re: [Wikisource-l] BUB is back

2016-02-09 Thread Bodhisattwa Mandal
The BUB queue is standing still for a quite a few days. Maintenance of
those files have already been done in IA, but they are not removed from the
queue, so, cant understand BUB is working or not.

[Wikisource-l] Template help needed

2016-01-17 Thread Bodhisattwa Mandal
Hi,

I need a template solution for the following proof-reading problem I faced
in Bengali Wikisource.

There is a reference in Page 1 which is continued in Page 2. I have used
the following code in Page 1:-

Text of Page 1 reference and text of Page 2
reference

It was okay while proof-reading, but when it was transcluded in mainspace,
its not working. There the text of Page 2 reference is not shown.

Can anyone help me with a solution? Do we need some more templates? Thanks.
