Hi Javier, The web development company I own is creating a web-based business management system for ISP's. You can subscribe to the system's launch notification list at http://www.ISPBuddy.com It is going to offer numerous features, including WISP monitor and billing processes and it will be affordable. I'm already using it to alert me when devices become unresponsive and it automatically logs in daily and backs up the settings for all of our access points so we have them readily available in the event a restore is needed. If there are special features you have in mind, contact me offlist and I'll see what we can do to accommodate your requests if the features aren't already planned. Shannon D. More on Clearwire - Intel Moto invest $900 Million Re: [WISPA] Clearwire is coming to my area. (eek?)
MOTOROLA AND INTEL TO INVEST IN CLEARWIRE [SOURCE: New York Times, AUTHOR: Laurie Flynn John Markoff] The investment units of Intel and Motorola said Wednesday that together they would invest $900 million in Clearwire, a wireless Internet service provider, in hopes of speeding development of its high-speed wide-range network. Intel Capital said it would make a $600 million cash investment in Clearwire, which was founded nearly three years ago by Craig O. McCaw, a pioneer in the cellular telephone industry. Motorola Ventures would not say how much of its $300 million investment would be in cash. In a related transaction, Motorola said it would buy Clearwire's NextNet Wireless subsidiary for an undisclosed amount. Analysts said Intel and Motorola wanted to give a lift to WiMax, a standard for mobile wireless that is used by Clearwire and is competing with technology from Qualcomm. WiMax is much like the popular WiFi networking standard but works over much greater distances, carrying both Internet data and mobile phone calls. A single WiMax base station could connect hundreds or potentially thousands of customers to the Internet over distances of many miles. Re: [WISPA] WiSP info needed
It will be 100% web-based so you will not need to install anything as it will all reside on the ISPBuddy.com's servers. So, you'll be able to manage your ISP business from anywhere you have a computer and Internet access (dial-up or broadband, doesn't matter). The billing module will integrate with Authorize.net and LinkPoint to start and others will be added upon request and if feasible. - Shannon - Original Message - From: Javier Arigita [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: WISPA General List wireless@wispa.org Sent: Thursday, July 06, 2006 9:16 AM Subject: Re: [WISPA] WiSP info needed Hi Shannon, is your web solution meant to be installed in one server in our offices or is it a solution similar to fon (external billing and so on)? Do you now any good WiSP monitor/billing software?, is it expensive? Continue to watch this list and I will make an announcement soon for just this type of solution. Mine will be a hosted solution. If you'd like an onsite solution, look into Freeside or Optigold for the billing portion. Both of these are reasonably priced (if you are familiar with Linux, you can download and install Freeside for free). Both have the ability to do provisioning for new users. For monitoring, there are lots of options out there. I really like the the one that Mikrotik has released called The Dude. It is free, and if you are using Mikrotik within the network, it will offer a TON of extra features above and beyond just simple monitoring. If you want to spend more time, you may find that Nagios is a better solution for you. I liked nagios, but for me The Dude really outshined it. Also, there is a program called Cacti that many people really like, but it is not so much of a monitor program as it is a graphing program. In other words, it will create graphs of bandwidth usage, signal levels, error rates and anything else that your system makes available via SNMP. -- Butch Evans Network Engineering and Security Consulting 573-276-2879 http://www.butchevans.com/ Mikrotik Certified Consultant (http://www.mikrotik.com/consultants.html) -- WISPA Wireless List: wireless@wispa.org Subscribe/Unsubscribe: http://lists.wispa.org/mailman/listinfo/wireless Archives: http://lists.wispa.org/pipermail/wireless/
[WISPA] Google Threatens Telcos with Antitrust Action
http://news.yahoo.com/s/nf/20060705/bs_nf/44263 In an escalation of the war of words over network neutrality -- the idea that all Internet content would not be prioritized for delivery on the basis of fees - - a top Google executive said Tuesday that the Internet giant would pursue antitrust enforcement against telecommunications companies if abuses occur. Google Vice President and noted Internet pioneer Vinton Cerf said at a news conference in Sofia, Bulgaria, that the company would be happy if the U.S. Congress passes a measure to enforce network neutrality. But if it does not, he said, Google will not hesitate to file antitrust complaints if telecommunications companies misuse their resulting market power. If a provision for network neutrality is not added to an existing telecommunications bill in Congress, he said, then we will simply have to wait until something bad happens, and then we will make known our case to the Department of Justice's antitrust division. 'Hand on Spigot' Brian Washburn, an analyst at Current Analysis, a technology research firm, said Cerf's statement might simply amount to posturing. It may be tough for Google to argue antitrust if net neutrality measures fail, Washburn said. In order to argue antitrust, one would need to establish that a company or a group of companies are monopolistic, with their hand on the spigot. But there are many providers and many resellers. Last week, the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Technology -- by an 11-11 vote -- defeated an amendment that would remove certain barriers for telephone companies to sell TV channels. The main bill, which passed the committee by a 15-7 vote, deals with broadband, TV, and other telecommunications matters. It includes a provision allowing the FCC to fine phone and cable companies if they try to block access to legal content or services on the Net. A similar bill, which also does not include a requirement for network neutrality, has passed the House of Representatives. Wyden To Filibuster? Senator Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) has indicated that he is prepared to filibuster the entire bill unless a provision for network neutrality is included. Without a clear policy preserving the neutrality of the Internet and without tough sanctions against those who would discriminate, the Internet will be forever changed for the worse, Wyden said in a statement. A Verizon Communications executive has called for an 'end to Google's free lunch,' he said. A Bell South executive has said that he wants the Internet to be turned into a 'pay-for-performance marketplace.' Under Senate rules, a Senator may filibuster by speaking without limit on a given measure, thus blocking a vote. Sixty votes in the Senate would be required to end a filibuster. But Senator Ted Stevens (R-Alaska), who sponsored the main bill and chairs the Committee, has acknowledged he does not yet have 60 votes. It is expected that the bill will not reach the Senate floor until September at the earliest. Proponents of network neutrality believe that, unless it is required, telecommunications companies will be able to charge different rates for different kinds of Internet content. Network neutrality would specifically prohibit these kinds of toll roads. Thank you.
