Re: [WISPA] Alternative to Meraki mesh??

2007-10-29 Thread Junk Mail
Download the MIT roofnet project files , then select an SOC hardware
platform and
several of you get together hire a linux systems architect on contract
and have him
re-compile to your chosen platform.

Or you could beat the distro (forge it) into submission on the SOC
platform chosen yourselves,
albeit, I think you'll find it is not that expensive to contract it.

How is that argument going? You must have learned by now that one buys
another company to grow revenue and/or reduce costs in this space. There
is no need to buy a company to access a market unless you have an

in the end it all comes back to revenue.

Forbes shared information about his sale. From all that I have heard it
is a prototypical deal. On one side you have a motivated seller and on
the other a motivated buyer who can both agree on a reasonable valuation
formula based on hard metrics e.g. revenue, customers, etc.

Forbes,

You brought up an interesting point of view.
The definition of someone selling "Internet" access.
Yes, Consumers believe the term "Internet" to be OPEN access in terms of
NetNeutrality.
And likely could be considered deceptive or Fraud to advertise "Internet"
for sale and it not be open.
But what if a carrier calls it's service for sale, "Broadband". Broadband
has not been branded as having to be "open" or "Public".
Only thing tied to "broadband"'s definition is connectivity over 200kbps
symetrical.

I got an evaluation pack from Lonnie.

The "can o war" as lonnie calls them, are nifty little cpe's. At 109.00

What problem are they trying to solve, where they think this is what they
want?

This would take a LOT of disk space and a pretty hefty database,
especially if they want to retain this information for weeks or months.
They'll also need a fairly clever person around to sort things out,
separating the wheat of a given Web request from the chaff of random ICMP
traffic and other background noise (or even more computing horsepower to
try to precompute the associations between, say, "DNS lookup" and "Web

I can't think of any off-the-shelf product that fills this niche right
off. If they really need this and nothing else will do, feel free to write

Else, they have a IWSS (Interscan Web Security Suite). This is a proxy

usernames not IPs.

PLUS, you get anti-virus, Spy ware protection right on the gateway! Works
wonders at several clients I have put it in at. Went from 3-4 spy ware

[WISPA] traffic logging

2007-10-29 Thread Travis Johnson

Hi,

I have a large customer that is looking for a device that will log all
of their internet traffic in and out of their network. However, unlike
Ethereal or anything like that, they need something that is _very_ easy
to use (web interface, with full logs so they can go back months at a
time). Ideally they want to be able to bring up a webpage and then
gradually drill down to find the info they are looking for (like
xx.xx.xx.xx went to ebay.com, etc.). They already have content filtering
and SPAM protection in place, they just need a traffic logging device.

On the technical side, it would be nice to have a box that would run in
promiscuous mode so we could just mirror a port on their switch rather
than having it run in-line. We are very technical, so if we need to
build a unix box for a free or low-cost application to run, that's no
problem. We just haven't been able to find anything that is easy to use
for the end user.

thanks,

Hi,

They just want to see that user A went to site B at time C. They
basically just want to be Big Brother on their network (and it's a
government agency, so they can).

For the more technical people, the best packet tracking program I have
ever seen is IpAudit. We have run it on our own backbone for almost 3
years now. It somehow grabs every single packet, logs it, and then
saves it with _very_ minimal load on the PC. We have it running on a
P4/2.8ghz with 1GB of RAM and it keeps up fine with 120Mbps incoming x
50Mbps outgoing traffic (30,000pps total). It has a web front end that
enables my 1st level techs to check people's IP addresses to see if it
looks like they are infected with a virus, worm, etc. It really is a
quite amazing program, especially for free. The only problem is you
have to be somewhat technical to even use it, and my customer needs
something very simple to use.

RE: [WISPA] Alternative to Meraki mesh??

2007-10-29 Thread Dennis Burgess
Just use MT! Mikrotik and OSPF. Forget about these automated meshing
systems, which require one vendor, etc. Plus, I know what that is going to
do vs some unknown algorithm doing something unforeseen. Really, other than
rapid STP, what else can these things do!

Re: [WISPA] traffic logging

2007-10-29 Thread Joshua Rowe
I agree with the netflow data, it's easy on the router, no super huge
database required, and here is a link to a demo for a product I've used
before that may just fit the bill for you, I have used the free edition
(monitors two interfaces)for some time now for a customers dedicated line
and it works nicely with lots of handy reporting. Let me know if this helps,
thanks!
