[WISPA] signal tests

2007-12-19 Thread chris cooper
Im wondering how everybody else is handling signal tests for resi
subscribers. We do most of our resi in heavily wooded very hilly
terrain, so coverage can be somewhat tricky to predict based solely upon
customer address - their mailbox/address may be at the top of the ridge
and they live down in the valley or vice versa. When a new prospect
comes in, we can make certain assumptions about their coverage based
upon topo, RM plots and historical install data. But this still leaves
us with a large number of potential customers that require a truck roll
and on site signal test. At some point the scale of doing this becomes
pretty large and time intensive. I don't feel that we can schedule
people for an install and determine when we arrive whether or not we can
do the install - most people have to take off work to meet us for the
install. Has anybody come up with a better solution than having a full
time signal test tech?

Thanks

Chris Cooper

[WISPA] Moto Spectra lite

2007-12-07 Thread chris cooper

Hi-

Im looking at the Moto spectra lite units for a link that's just a hair
over 1 mile, clear LOS. Vendor spec says they do 150 mb. What actual
throughput have others seen using this product? I'm looking for a
product that will deliver greater than 70 mb and am considering the
spectra lite and spectra series.

Thanks

RE: [WISPA] Locustworld meshes?

Id be interested to see how they worked with high gain directional
antennas. With the proper antennas you could pick up some penetration,
help pick through noise and change polarities. Anybody used the Meraki
boxes this way?

Well, I disagree, in a hippocritical way..

What Meraki has done is package and make it painlessly easy and low cost
for
any joker in town to spend $100 a house and destroy the RF environement
accross town, with noise generating Omnis, without a clue on the
engineering
that needs to go behind it.
The good news about the other common Mesh Boxes that were $4000 a shot
(Moto, Tropo, etc) is it kept the MESH boxes in the hand of
professionals
(if you call Muni network guys- Professionals?) Ventures like Meraki,
scare
the pants off me, regarding the health of this industry.
Locust MEsh on the other hand, is Open Source Software designed to
empower
developers to go to work to make MESH gear. Sure its OPEN, but the
klearning
curve is still there, detering individuals that did not have atleast a
certain level of minimal technical competence.

With that said, I'll have to Buy and Try some of those Meraki's, I see
all
sorts of applications for them, that have now become affordable to try
:-)
Could possibly save me tons of money.

Is that you're speaking of directly related to tower sections on the

It was brought to my attention yesterday that some WISPs put tower
sections
on grain legs.

mks: Yes.

How many of you have done this?

mks: Almost everyone? grin

mks: I started out on one, had to move due to a long cell phone ptp
link.
About ready to go back on one though.

Could you describe the particulars of those installations?

mks: Explosion risk!! Gotta use GOOD boxes and be VERY careful
about
sparks when plugging things in etc. I require that either a licensed
electrician or the elevator owner's people do all work.

Pictures?

Did you have an engineer approve your designs?

mks: Nope. Other than the explosion risk, there's nothing really
special
about them.

[WISPA] WR 900 question

2007-08-25 Thread chris cooper

We have a WR 900 MHz cell that saw a sudden 10 db jump in noise.
Running spec ans from other towers doesn't show this rise in noise in
the same band. Doing sweeps from the tower using another device, albeit
600' lower than the affected ap, we still don't see the noise floor
rise, even when we run a scan pointed straight at the ap. I know we
cant exactly mirror conditions at the ap from a lower altitude, but
shouldn't we see some of the noise that it is reporting? Im wondering
if we have a bad piece of gear up there...
CPE units seem to be receiving signal as normal, but ap side is having
trouble hearing them. Could wet connectors cause behavior - we had
torrential rain followed by high heat.

Thanks
Chris

I have an 80' Rohn 25G tower on top of a 110' concrete grain
elevator.
 This
elevators power is giving me fits as they are flipping breakers on
and
 off
as they are in full swing with all the corn coming in right now out
of
 the
fields. I do have everything on UPS's, but need to move up the ranks
 for
longer run times to 4 larger marine batteries to accomplish longer
run
 times
when the breakers are flipped off.

Here is my question: Do they make a device that has multiple DC power
 output
voltages (12/18/24/48) that connects directly to a set of batteries
 with
 the
ability to connect multiple devices and if so - how do you keep your
batteries charged? I would like to run my gear directly off the DC
 power
instead of plugging everything into 120vdc and then have the wall
warts
convert to the DC power. I currently have 10 radios on top of the
 elevator
and it is a major distribution point for the North and East legs of
our
 network.

Any and all suggestions are welcomed!!

 Thanks folks,
 Mac

Can you actually make any money when you take into account all the costs
of doing the install vs. what they pay for the install? It seems like
they pay a pretty slim fee. A couple service calls can eat up your
profit pretty quickly. I could see it making sense if your labor is not
fully employed, but if you are booked pretty well doing your own
installs, I would think it would make sense to spend as much time as
possible generating recurring revenue. Just my $.02

In order to coordinate and expand access to the state's broadband data
network, Ohio Governor Ted Strickland has signed an executive order
establishing the Ohio Broadband Council and the Broadband Ohio Network.
The
order directs the Ohio Broadband Council to coordinate efforts to extend
access to the Broadband Ohio Network to every county in Ohio. The order
allows public and private entities to tap into the Broadband Ohio
Network -
all with a goal of expanding access to high-speed internet service in
parts
of the state that presently don't have such service.

more than 7 miles from a tower with a base station. LoS is NOT assured

Use of 2.4GHz band is not acceptable.

Min data rates are 256Kbit up by 1Mbit down.

I'm open to any technology that will work and to any vendor. Licensed

Wow!

We had over 10% with SB units. Our reliability with Tranzeo has been in
the
99%+++ range though. We *might* have to send back one out of 100.

I will say though, these new CPQ radios are doing some strange things.
Not
the least of which is reporting signal levels around 10 dB below what I
know
I should be getting based on the calculated values. They work but sure
report low signal levels. It's very strange.

One thing is for sure, the Telcos would not have stood for such a

What happened to us? Do we feel we have too much to lose and no way

[WISPA] muni wi fi pricing

muni networks:

St. Cloud - free access, 80% take
Tempe - $19.95/mos first 3 mos, $29.95/mos after that, 15% take

Im wondering - is this a perception of value? Does free=low value/low
network quality in the mind of the subscriber?
Why would the take rate only be 15% for a $30/mos account in an urban

Has anyone tried a wi fi pricing model somewhere in the middle? Maybe
$10/mos w/ X take rate...

Steve,
What you are suggesting here is very similar to what the ham
radio
community does now. I would add a step in your process, that first the
offending WISP be contacted via official WISPA correspondence explaining
what it is we are doing and the planned course of action through the FCC
and
give them a chance to correct the problems voluntarily. That's what the
hams
do and many times that works. If this process were to work, we might
actually get recognition from the FCC as a monitor for this purpose.

Thank You,

Mac:

Aren't you one of those who wants to see dedicated WISP Spectrum
become available, like 3650 or television broadcast whitespace?

Do you think there's an incentive by the regulators to grant such
spectrum exclusively to WISPs, when, as professionals you know
about such behavior, and do nothing? For the regulators to create
WISP-only spectrum would be seen as overtly supporting more of the
same bad behavior?

WISPA... of, by, and for WISPs, could take on some of these bad
players as peers.

Here's how I see it potentially working:
1) You suspect a bad player is operating in your immediate area
2) You gather as much information as you can - put together a BRIEF
report documenting what you REALLY know - hard facts like data from
spectrum analyzer, photos of towers and/or radios that aren't legal,
lat/long of known base stations, etc.
3) You present this to the WISPA bad players committee
4) WISPA bad players committee convenes to discuss whether or not
you may well have a case of interference. The bad players committee
only has the time and budget available to proceed with a handful of
such cases per year.
5) IF the bad players committee agrees with your conclusions, they
select a volunteer to come to your area to provide independent
verification as to whether the bad player is really operating
illegally. Said volunteer is compensated at least minimally - travel
expenses, hotel, a SMALL stipend, all paid for out of a WISPA budget
6) If the volunteer agrees with you, then the bad players committee
creates a formal complaint to the FCC field office nearest the
suspected violation with documentation, certification of the
independent volunteer that in their direct observations and
professional opinion, there's reasonable suspicion that the bad
player is operating illegally. The complaint is submitted with the
full force of WISPA,.
7) WISPA follows up; if the FCC investigates, then all is well. If
the FCC deigns not to investigate, WISPA can escalate - possibly
press releases, etc. WISPA needs to hold the FCC accountable for
following through on the very few cases of suspected illegal WISP
operations that WISPA refers to the FCC.

As I see it, this process has sufficient checks and balances, and
involves WISPA to the point where WISPA can provide cover. It's
still small-scale enough for the we're just a bunch of small guys
with limited resources nature of WISPA and its limited budget.
Having WISPA deal with the FCC only after internal vetting and
developing reasonable grounds for suspicion removes the potential for
an individual WISP to tick off the FCC thinking that they're just
whining about a competitor and the FCC's initial attitude of it's
unlicensed spectrum, what do you EXPECT?!?!?!

I'm sure that WISPA can get some expert advice about the wording for
the formal referral to the FCC to the effect that WISPA isn't
complaining about interference issues (which, everyone operating
under Part 15 must accept) but rather WISPA is reporting suspected
illegal, high-profile operations in violation of FCC Part 15 rules.
The FCC doesn't have the resources for wild-goose chases, but if you
really do your homework and the FCC can be reasonably sure that they
won't be wasting their time, then they are much more likely to act.

Thanks,

Steve

[WISPA] MTU pricing

2007-01-09 Thread chris cooper
Anyone care to share their thoughts on this?

For those of you in the MTU market- how do you handle pricing? By the
unit? By the head? Does it make more sense to try to get the whole apt.
at one time just like the gas company and have all the roommates pitch
in on the bill, or does it make more sense to let everyone choose their
own provider? From a retention standpoint, do you stand a better chance
of keeping the other roommates if one guy is a deadbeat and wont pay and
causes the whole apartment to get shut off? Or, his wireless card goes
down, he cant use the service and lobbies for cable service. If his
roommates are happy will they keep paying their own individual accounts
and tell him to fix his own problem? Can you make more and keep more by
charging say $10/head and giving everyone a choice or selling the whole
unit for $35-$45?

We started out with a MY-TE years ago, it was very heavy and cumbersome
to operate. We now have customized a Reese hitch adapter with an AB
Chance winch with foot pedal control. This capstan works great for WISP

If you are looking for a capstan, watch the tower-pro list on Yahoo.

I am going to attempt to hire some new CPE installers, as contractors,
paid
by the job (peice work). (I see market rate around $100-$150 per
job -residential).
Finding guys that ALREADY know how to do it correctly, is not likely.
This
brings me to Training.

How are you training the installers? Are you making them do a mandatory

time period shadowing/apprenticing with one of your existing installers?
If
so, does their pay change for that period?
Are you bringing them in-house for a significant duration Trainging
Class?
For example, a 1 week class room training? What minimum requirements do
you
expect them to have to be worthy to be trained? I hear that many are
successfull hiring X-Satelite TV installers, but they are not likely to
have
extensive TCPIP experience.

Its not easy finding a guy thats willing to climb a ladder daily and
also
had his free time being spent as a computer geek. They are two
different
breed people (The worken man and the intellectual). Do you train the
geek to
climb a ladder, or train the ladder climber to be a geek? I find that
applicants that have physical labor backgrounds work faster, and enjoy
their
job as being a wireless installer, as adds many new challenges and is
easier
work. But the training can be tough starting at ground zero, how to
configure the LAPTOP with an IP address. When I employed, and paid by
the
hour or salary, it was pretty easy to figure out who to hire. But
contracting, a whole new set of issues arise.

I need 5 or 6 people that would like to go. Naturally, you'll have to

those, but I'm not sure where we're sitting money wise right now.

I think that only WISPA members should be invited to participate.

Thanksgiving day, my son and I put up a future customer's CPE up in
the
woods. I mean, up in the mountains, log cabin, beyond phone and
power.
They have a generator, batteries, solar panels, etc. We did it because

 snow
was predicted and already a little bit had fallen. We got it there,
link
established and was working on aiming the antenna when the laptop ran
out
 of
power. The power plug on the laptop PSU had broken and, well... we
were
 dead.

The people got back a few days later, and by then, yes, quite a bit of

 snow
had fallen. When we had the chance to go back and finish ( plug the
 power
in inside, hook up thier equipment) we had no signal.

We tried everything we could think of, short of changing parts,
because
 we
didn't take any (wasn't our install rig, just a 4x4 so we could get
 through
 the deep snow), no signal.

Yesterday, after a few days of warm, we drove in ( this time, install
rig,
my '89 Caravan ) digging through some deep snow going in the canyon
 between
 them and the main road.

Eventually, we changed every part, including the WAR board and SR9, no
signal. Then, I assembled the WAR we took out and all the parts
changed
out, and standing there, on the ground... I had a solid link.

Finally, in pitch black dark, I climbed the ladder, had someone
provide
 some
light, and hooked up the SR9 through another pigtail to the
anntenna...
 POOF, signal.

Put the original back on... Poof, signal. then, none. Work the
 pigtail
around so it's not tensioned and in line and put it back on... Poof,
 signal.

I go inside, log in...and in a minute or so, watch the signal fade to
 nothing.

T urns out our low loss u.fl to n-female pigtails with the thicker
coax in
the cold will revert shape and pull themselves off the cramped SR9 /
WAR
 board combination.

I found one of the crapola thing things I had rejected for 5 ghz use

[WISPA] long BH links

2006-12-09 Thread Chris Cooper

We have a client that has needs for some BH links that stretch @ 23 miles.
Links need to be reliable, but cost, as always, is an issue. The Orthogons
are nice, but the price point can be pretty steep. The link budget works
with tranzeos but I am a little concerned about reliability. How about the
Atlas? Any other suggestions?

We are picking up 2.4 gig CPE/Routers, QOS, NAT, and DHCP is all built into
the CPE, for what, 99 bucks! 150 something including a 19db antenna, where
the 99 is a 12 db antenna. BTW, both are B/G and 400mw output. Good for

You missed the thread though Blair. Our CPEs are as low as $245 complete
and only $285 for very low volume (25 a quarter). We have AUs now also
for about $2500 MSRP (list price). And we can filter and control packets
without a router, including broadcast packet rate limiting.

Why provide routers? To improve the isolation of the user from the
network. To filter and control packets at the customer end before they
clog up my wireless bandwidth. We run private IP space on our wireless
network for the same reasons.

We provide anti-virus and anti-spyware software for the same reasons.

I'd love to be able to put up $500 cpe's and $5000 AP's But in my area,

that would price me out of the market.

we have our own router.

VL also can do VLAN, all the way to QinQ 802.3ad VLANs. It does 802.1q.
It does layer 2 802.1p. Layer 3 prioritization with IP TOS (RFC791) and
DSCP (RFC2474). And layer 4 with UDP/TCP port range. And we can deliver
real VoIP QoS with a MOS of 4.0 and better using our proprietary WLP
(wireless link prioritization) protocol. (And that's not marketing
goop,
it's been tested by a tier 1 operator and it blew them away.)

Plus, in the end the thing that I admit really gets me is that some of
these products simply are not legal at all and are illegally shipped in
from overseas. If we just blatantly flauted the laws we could save tons
in RD and legal too. It has always been disappointing that some WISPs
simply don't care about that. Especially when at the same time the same
WISP might complain that another WISP is over driving a system.

I have been in the ISP business longer than MOST people on this

fact is, that to use Alvarion gear in any network I would build, you
would HAVE to add an addition cost for a router. SO, we would add
another $25ish to the cost of your CPE. At this point, the price is
exactly the same (or very close).

NOW, let's talk about upsell capability. With the Alvarion solution
(including a router), I could upgrade the speed, but that costs how
much? I could offer a firewall, vpn, qos or other options, but I'd
have to change the cost of the router from a $25 router to (at
least) a $100 router. If I am able to hit one customer in an area,
but the others have obscured LOS, I would have to build another AP
somewhere, where with MT, I could just add an $80 (including
antenna) upgrade to their router and offer service off that new AP.
I can offer real options for firewall, vpn, qos from their ethernet
port all the way to my network edge. Did I miss anything? Perhaps
there are other options that Alvarion has that I missed.

Dave did include a smiley face which was supposed to indicate he was

hours per week without compensation. I have told them that as a salary
worker they are to make sure the job is done at all times regarding
their position. Only professional level staff are on salary. They are
not required to maintain a daily log of their time. They can and are
encouraged to come and go as they please to handle their personal and
work lives. If they work a long day I would expect them to take the next

day off or leave early, etc. This is called comp time and is a
legitimate way of handling settlement of extra work hours. I know that
my staff understands this. My labor intensive techs work by the hour.
They get paid time and a half for anything over 40 hours per week. They

just enforce the policy they already have in place. I cant think of a
single program that has greater ability to foster rural broadband
investment than this.

There's nothing here about entreprenurial types being the stars of the
internet spread, it's the failure of government to make it happen.

The solution to our broadband crisis must ultimately involve
public-private
initiatives like those that built the railroad, highway and telephone
systems. Combined with an overhaul of our universal service system to
make
sure it is focusing on the needs of broadband, this represents our best
chance at recapturing our leadership position.

Due to the eirp limits at 900 (36dB total) your antenna choice really should
take into account the radio gain first.

Having said that, a lot of people put in the high gain 900 omni antennas and
don't seem to have much trouble with them.

I agree with the sector idea though.

The 900 that I'm using now is trango. They have almost got the full eirp
built right in to the radio/antenna system as it comes from the factory.
The down side is that it takes 6 ap's to cover 360*. That can get spendy.
Especially if you pay rent per antenna.

As a rule, we are sectorizing more and more sites these days. Even the ones
out in the sticks. There are too many other users out there showing up all
of the time.

[WISPA] FCC definitions

2006-10-26 Thread chris cooper

Does a WISP fall under the designation of a telecommunications
carrier even though it isnt required to file form 499-a?

Under definition found at USC title 47,153.40 , it appears
that an ISP and in particular a WISP offers telecommunications services and is
deemed a telecommunications carrier .

From The USAC website:

To be a telecommunications carrier, the carrier must (1) allow the
customer to transmit information of its own design and choosing, without change
in the form or content of the information, and (2) provide that capability for
a fee directly to the public, or to such classes of users as to be effectively
available to the public (i.e., hold itself out to serve indifferently all
potential users).

USAC defines a carrier as above. They also require that Eligible
Telecommunications Carriers file 499-A. As an industry, if we supply telecommunications
services, as defined above, directly to a school or library and dont file
the 499 is that considered breaking the rules? Im caught
between a rock and the horns of a dilemma.

No- what Im saying is that rolling, or hilly terrain is inherently
difficult to cover. We are in pretty hilly terrain, use 900 and its
rough at times. We almost always do signal testing for each prospect.
We have paging down as low as 158.7 that still wont propagate
everywhere. A big high ridge is a real signal killer.

I mean, if someone can pick up a local tv station's broadcast via

spectrum, right? Are you saying that 700Mhz is not much better

I can see both sides. Since we haven't implemented the new policy
yet, we may just charge the $29.99 site survey fee if they decline
service after a successful site survey. We only charge $99 for
installation
and our CPE is provided on a free-to-use basis as we are competing
against one other WISP, cable and DSL. Out of 10 site surveys, only
3 or 4 are successful due to the rolling terrain in our coverage area
and
we have (17) broadcast sites! Now if we were using 900Mhz, we could
probably double our site survey success rate but fewer people would be
interested because of the cost of the 900Mhz CPE which we would have
to pass along to them in order for it to be feasible.

In a perfect world, prospects should expect to pay for an onsite site
survey because there are costs involved (labor and gas). Too bad we
don't live in a perfect world.

Hopefully unlicensed 700Mhz will become available in our lifetime and
we can avoid site surveys altogether. I wonder though if it will be less
costly than 900Mhz gear when/if that time does come?

You are still going to need to do site surveys w/ 700. If you are in rolling
terrain, the 700 is going to have the same problem with dirt as 900

I can see both sides. Since we haven't implemented the new policy
yet, we may just charge the $29.99 site survey fee if they decline
service after a successful site survey. We only charge $99 for installation
and our CPE is provided on a free-to-use basis as we are competing
against one other WISP, cable and DSL. Out of 10 site surveys, only
3 or 4 are successful due to the rolling terrain in our coverage area and
we have (17) broadcast sites!

I would not be happy about the $29.95 fee. If you can get away
with it go right ahead. I look at it the customer is betting $29.95 that
they can get service. I would rather have it here if they can get
service, and they don't then they are charged $29.95. If they can't get
service why should they have to pay $29.95? That would be like going to
buy a new car. You want a Blue one with a stick shift. The dealer can't
get you one, but they charge you $29.95 for looking. I think the word will
spread pretty quickly. Customers are a weird beast. I can see the coffee
shop conversations now:

Joe:Yeah that company came out and did a site survey to see if
they could get me wireless
  Bob How did that go?
Joe The installer guy waived an antenna around and said he could
not get me a signal
Bob Too bad, so what now?
Joe I don't know, but I got charged $29.95 for him coming out
Bob What? They are supposed to come out next week. I don't want
them charging me $29.95 if they can't hook me up.

[WISPA] lightning

2006-10-06 Thread chris cooper

We had the lightning storm of the century here 2 days
ago. It was an awesome spectacle to witness. It was a much more
distressing spectacle to watch our network map begin to blink red all over the
place. Which leads me to a couple of questions:

How do you handle customer installations that get
fried? We install and own the gear. We are taking the external ones
on the chin. We took down one panel that has a big black hole right in
the center. Another customer has a hole in his roof- our gear died along with
the roof. What do you do if the customer AC takes a shot, and burns your
equipment? Do they pay because it came in on their side or do you take
the replacement and the truck roll on the chin because you own the equipment?

We have multiple brands of products on the same
towers. The tower that took a hit was populated with, among other things,
some B-14s, proxim QB, and some Tranzeos. All units are grounded to the
same structure/bussbar. The Tranzeos seem much more sensitive to lightning than
some of the other products. Has anyone had any similar experiences with
them?

Thanks

Chris

  Hello
  all,

  Im planning on purchasing some
test equipment designed around the SR9 900 MHz equipment. Im debating
between MikroTik and WRAP boards at the moment and have found an outdoor
enclosure that should work fine. However, the big question is what
antennas to use for both the AP and the CPE.

I found some sites that offer 900
MHz Omnis but the prices are CRAZY! Into the $300 range! As for a
client side it seems to be a little more realistic of around $20 up to the
hundreds of dollars depending on the type needed. Am I crazy or am I
destined to pay about $300 for an Omni-directional
  antenna!?

Also, if anybody has any EXACT
configurations they would like to recommend for my first SR9 AP and CPE setup
please feel free to post the details of you recommended configurations!
  Thanks!

How much is everyone paying for good quality
bandwidth? We're in the
market for
10Mbps - 20Mbps and we're seeing pricing around $100 a meg
for the bandwidth only (we'll be providing our
own transit via wireless).
This is for Sprint bandwidth via fiber
(upstream has two OC12 circuits and
has a ton of excess bandwidth
available).

I'm thinking about asking them for a quote
for10Mbps/10Mbps burstable
to 100Mbps/100Mbps. Anyone have a burstable
plan like this with their
upstream? How are high bandwidth burstable
plans like this usually
priced by a provider?

One provider's quote difference between 10Mbps
and 20Mbps was $400.
Is this typical,
do fiber prices really drop off like this once you purchase
more than 10Mbps?

[WISPA] tower power

2006-09-18 Thread chris cooper

We have an enclosure @ 400 that is powered from the
same circuit as tower lighting. Its been acting a little strange lately,
so we went up with a voltmeter to check the power. The meter showed
fluctuations from 140-170v AC at the outlet. We tested at the back of the
ups and have a steady 130v. This powers a waverider CCU and a couple
backhauls. Im not an electrician, known enough to be dangerous. Is the
130 enough to make my gear get squirrely? The ups seems to be keeping the
voltage steady at the backend. Im thinking of putting an isolation xformer in.

That’s a thought, but rigging an HPOL omni @ 800' is a bit of a grind,
not to mention the truck rolls and customer touches. We cant add more

rules out multiple sectors.

RE: [WISPA] [Fwd: Durbin introduces bill toencouragehighspeedinternetaccess in rural areas]

2006-08-09 Thread chris cooper

America wants cheap food. Period. In the past, cattle took better than 30
months to reach slaughter weight on grass. Under current industrialized agricultural
methods cattle can go from birth to the meat case in less than 12 months.
Its very similar for chickens, hogs or any other common form of protein we
consume on a daily basis. All this requires cheap grain, which in turn is
produced with assistance of govt. subsidization. In the past, meat was
often a luxury meal for most Americans. Now we all get to eat it nearly
every day. Most of my neighbors farm. I dont know one of them that would
be taking subsidies just to screw the American taxpayer. Farmers usually
just end up being a small cog in the great wheel of food production. So,
if you dont like the system, dont participate. Buy all your
food from a local producer and pay the actual price of production+profit. Dont
patronize Safeway, or Walmart or Kroger etc.- otherwise you are
implicitly participating in the system. Its a much more
complicated issue than just paying farmers not to produce.

Marlon-
I agree with you - Subsidies aren't just hand outs so some hayseed
farmer can sit on the porch all day spittin redman at the dog. Its much
more clever and insidious than that. Americans spend tax $$ on
Agricultural Subsidies and get to eat crap, sometimes literally, for
their investment. The subsidies really are about cheap raw materials for
industrial food processors, feedlots, additive manufacturers etc. They
get cheap grain, Americans get feed cheap food. And often there is not a
whole lot of food in the food.
Earl Butz and Richard Nixon started America down this slippery slope
long before Carter showed up. They were the ones responsible for the
dismantling of the grain bank loans in favor of direct cash payments to
producers.
Thanks for the insight from a farmer's perspective.

chris

Oh boy, this is gonna be GREAT (said in my best Animal House voice)

Unlike some others here I'm gonna take this on. Please feel free to
expand
on my thoughts as needed.

WISPA is a political organization guys. We work with the FCC, congress,

state and local governments. Eventually we'll help other countries make

things better for their people too.

It's important that people here, especially the business owners,
understand
how things REALLY work. To get to that point we have to talk to each
other
about what happens on OUR watch. Otherwise all we learn is one sided
and we
can't form reality based opinions.

Having said that, I agree with you 100% David. As far as you've
gone..

We own thousands of acres. Not me, my parents though. We get a LOT of
money for not growing wheat every year. Believe me, it's not a good
thing
for the community. We buy less fuel, equipment, fertilizer, insurance
etc.
etc. etc. Many farm towns are all but dead because they can't support
the
churches, grocery stores, clothing stores, hardware stores etc.
Wal-Mart
hasn't helped, but mostly it's the lost of bodies that has hurt. When
the
school district is loosing kids you know people, especially the next
generation just aren't staying here.

But what's a body to do? Out here most of the ground we're being paid
not
to raise crops on is really bad ground. It should not have ever been
pulled
from grazeland in the first place. But there's not always been more
food
than people, so folks planted every acre they could.

Farming used to be a good living. Back before Jimmy Carter that is.
His
choice to use food as a political weapon caused other countries to start

growing a LOT of food. And our wonderful universities and government
was
all too happy to teach them how. So now we don't feed you AND the whole

world. We feed you and part of the world.

Farmers today compete against Australia, south america, China and a lot
of
other countries. Here we have more rules that everyone, not only the
farmers but the suppliers of our chemicals and machinery too, have to
follow
so our costs are often driven much higher than our competitors. But
we've
got good ground and we know how to take care of it so we can probably
keep
up that way.

Many of those other countries subsidize their farmers or tax our
incoming
crops though. Sometimes both. In those cases we certainly can not
compete.
If we can't compete we go out of business. If no one in the industry
can
compete the industry eventually shuts down. When's the last time you
saw a
wagon wheel plant? Or a blacksmith shop? It does happen. In those
cases
though, there's been something else, something better to take it's
place.

What are you going to do for food if you can't afford to grow it here?
You
can live without your computers if someone blocks the ships coming to
our
shores. You can survive without your TV, radio, mp3 player etc.

Let me ask you, if there's another big war and you were on the other
side,
what's the first thing you'd do? Me, I'd shut down America's access to
the
rest of the world. Without America many economies would collapse, war
materials couldn't get out, and nothing, including (especially???) food
would get in.

Governments know that as long as people are eating it's not likely that
they
will revolt. When they start to starve, when the children die, bullets
start to fly. And NO government, even the mighty Romans, survives when
the
people are against them. The USA spends less per capita on food than
almost
any country in the world. If you allow too many farmers to go broke
that
won't be the case. You'll have to buy food instead of that new car.

Here's where it gets really interesting. Did you know that the farmers
can't sell their crops themselves in most cases? There are two or three

exporters in the whole country. They sell the wheat AND set the prices
that
the farmers are paid. I can't go to, say, China, and say, Look, you're

paying $5 for a bushel of wheat. I only get $3.75, how about if I sell
to
you at $4.50 and we both win? How would you like to have to sell your
internet to

[WISPA] Cat5 cable

Im installing some 120 runs of cat 5 in building
shafts. I also need to take this through a roof penetration and 20
across the roof to hook up to my radios. I can find exterior cable and riser
rated cable, but not one that will serve both needs. Anybody have any idea
where I can find such a beast?

We are rolling out some wrap 2 based nodes. The node,

wondering if someone has come up with a slick way to do this.

Earthlink primarily uses Tropos mesh, with about 40-50 nodes per square
mile
backhauled with Canopy 5GHz on about a 1:3 (mesh:Canopy) ratio.

Can you tell us how this network is structured? How many Tropos units
per backhaul radio are used? What platform is used for backhaul? Is it
5, 2.4 or 900 for backhaul? How is the performance of this network?
Anything else you can share is appreciated.

The primary difference being that in the Canopy Fixed Wireless you
are
including end user CPE. The largest cost to detur take rate when
 WISPS make
 subs pay for it.

Its likely that one can assume that many of the subscribers will
 need to
install outdoor equipment (adding $100-$300 BUCKS), to reliably
 connect to
the mesh. So you could easilly add $1.5 million to the mesh cost
 for CPE,
or remove $1.5million from the Fix Wireless plan if you were going
to
 compare apples to apples.

What Mesh still has on its side is mobility. The question is what
 value
should a WISP put on that. Mobility can be easilly be the reason
 to justify
why a muni should support a oublic interest project. (cable and
 DSL go to
the home but NOT mobile for teh community to share.). Mobilty
 also allow
Muni type applications, such as to support travelling users
 (commerce), or
Mobile government work force. Mesh also gives Muni bargining
 power in the
deployment, as it uses an asset of value that the governement has
 to trade
and offer (easements, light poles, and power from them).

In a Fixed Wireless deployment it could easilly be argued that teh
givernemnt has little assets of value to the provider. Its usually
 the
independant property owners tht have the preferred assets for
signal
distribution. For example, in my county, I am allowed free access
 to city
infrastructure as a requirement that allowed tower building
 restrictions to
be passed years ago. But yet I chose to pay for broadcast sites,
 because teh

Governement do not own the best sites that are advantageous to me.

Part of my point is that its not jsut the radios costs that are
 relevant.

I'm starting to think that the Tropos, use all verticle, use only
one
channel all across the network, design may not be to bad an ideas
 after all.
If it solves the challenge to get mobility well, and does not work
 well for
subs inside their homes, it still allows lots of spectrum for the
high
 quality Fixed Wireless providers.

Part of the arguement is that its possible that MESH may be the
 only way to
get mobilty well. And maybe the answer is to deliver it with the
 least
 impact on everyone else.

Of course Alvarion mobile products have shown otherwise for
 vehichle mobile
 solutions.

So what would happen if more Fixed Wireless manufacturers made
 Mobile CPEs?
Would it get rid of some of teh need of mesh? Sure mesh gives
 person/laptop
mobility, but will any one really use it? There is a good
 arguement that

This is just my view:

The days of making money off just internet connectivity are closing
fast.
Even the RBOCs realize that they will need to charge more and add
services and bundle.
Some have added secure email**, desktop support, internet security, etc.

to boost the ARPU.
Plus bundles lock the customer up for 2 to 3 years.

Managed services are where the rubber meets the road.
Technology has gotten beyond th eaverage user's mental grasp.
Remember that the average consumer couldn't set a VCR clock, but now has

to figure out streaming video, iPods, mp3, mp4, digital pictures, online

photo albums, etc. Beyond their understanding.

In a sales class I took they explained that if someone bought an item,
it is your job to vacuum up the plate with accessories to make that item

more useful and valuable to the customer. Like selling a cable with a
printer plus paper.^^
