[WISPA] signal tests
Im wondering how everybody else is handling signal tests for resi subscribers. We do most of our resi in heavily wooded very hilly terrain, so coverage can be somewhat tricky to predict based solely upon customer address - their mailbox/address may be at the top of the ridge and they live down in the valley or vice versa. When a new prospect comes in, we can make certain assumptions about their coverage based upon topo, RM plots and historical install data. But this still leaves us with a large number of potential customers that require a truck roll and on site signal test. At some point the scale of doing this becomes pretty large and time intensive. I don't feel that we can schedule people for an install and determine when we arrive whether or not we can do the install - most people have to take off work to meet us for the install. Has anybody come up with a better solution than having a full time signal test tech? Thanks Chris Cooper Intelliwave WISPA Wants You! RE: [WISPA] Locustworld meshes?
Id be interested to see how they worked with high gain directional antennas. With the proper antennas you could pick up some penetration, help pick through noise and change polarities. What Meraki has done is package and make it painlessly easy and low cost for any joker in town to spend $100 a house and destroy the RF environement accross town, with noise generating Omnis, without a clue on the engineering that needs to go behind it. The good news about the other common Mesh Boxes that were $4000 a shot (Moto, Tropo, etc) is it kept the MESH boxes in the hand of professionals (if you call Muni network guys- Professionals?) Ventures like Meraki, scare the pants off me, regarding the health of this industry. Locust MEsh on the other hand, is Open Source Software designed to empower developers to go to work to make MESH gear. Sure its OPEN, but the klearning curve is still there, detering individuals that did not have atleast a certain level of minimal technical competence. [WISPA] WR 900 question
We have a WR 900 MHz cell that saw a sudden 10 db jump in noise. Running spec ans from other towers doesn't show this rise in noise in the same band. Doing sweeps from the tower using another device, albeit 600' lower than the affected ap, we still don't see the noise floor rise, even when we run a scan pointed straight at the ap. I know we cant exactly mirror conditions at the ap from a lower altitude, but shouldn't we see some of the noise that it is reporting? Im wondering if we have a bad piece of gear up there... CPE units seem to be receiving signal as normal, but ap side is having trouble hearing them. Could wet connectors cause behavior - we had torrential rain followed by high heat. Can you actually make any money when you take into account all the costs of doing the install vs. what they pay for the install? It seems like they pay a pretty slim fee. A couple service calls can eat up your profit pretty quickly. I could see it making sense if your labor is not fully employed, but if you are booked pretty well doing your own installs, I would think it would make sense to spend as much time as possible generating recurring revenue. I would add a step in your process, that first the offending WISP be contacted via official WISPA correspondence explaining what it is we are doing and the planned course of action through the FCC and give them a chance to correct the problems voluntarily. That's what the hams do and many times that works. If this process were to work, we might actually get recognition from the FCC as a monitor for this purpose. Mac: Aren't you one of those who wants to see dedicated WISP Spectrum become available, like 3650 or television broadcast whitespace? Do you think there's an incentive by the regulators to grant such spectrum exclusively to WISPs, when, as professionals you know about such behavior, and do nothing? For the regulators to create WISP-only spectrum would be seen as overtly supporting more of the same bad behavior? WISPA... of, by, and for WISPs, could take on some of these bad players as peers. Here's how I see it potentially working: 1) You suspect a bad player is operating in your immediate area 2) You gather as much information as you can - put together a BRIEF report documenting what you REALLY know - hard facts like data from spectrum analyzer, photos of towers and/or radios that aren't legal, lat/long of known base stations, etc. 3) You present this to the WISPA bad players committee 4) WISPA bad players committee convenes to discuss whether or not you may well have a case of interference. The bad players committee only has the time and budget available to proceed with a handful of such cases per year. 5) IF the bad players committee agrees with your conclusions, they select a volunteer to come to your area to provide independent verification as to whether the bad player is really operating illegally. Said volunteer is compensated at least minimally - travel expenses, hotel, a SMALL stipend, all paid for out of a WISPA budget 6) If the volunteer agrees with you, then the bad players committee creates a formal complaint to the FCC field office nearest the suspected violation with documentation, certification of the independent volunteer that in their direct observations and professional opinion, there's reasonable suspicion that the bad player is operating illegally. The complaint is submitted with the full force of WISPA,. 7) WISPA follows up; if the FCC investigates, then all is well. If the FCC deigns not to investigate, WISPA can escalate - possibly press releases, etc. WISPA needs to hold the FCC accountable for following through on the very few cases of suspected illegal WISP operations that WISPA refers to the FCC. As I see it, this process has sufficient checks and balances, and involves WISPA to the point where WISPA can provide cover. It's still small-scale enough for the we're just a bunch of small guys with limited resources nature of WISPA and its limited budget. Having WISPA deal with the FCC only after internal vetting and developing reasonable grounds for suspicion removes the potential for an individual WISP to tick off the FCC thinking that they're just whining about a competitor and the FCC's initial attitude of it's unlicensed spectrum, what do you EXPECT?!?!?! I'm sure that WISPA can get some expert advice about the wording for the formal referral to the FCC to the effect that WISPA isn't complaining about interference issues (which, everyone operating under Part 15 must accept) but rather WISPA is reporting suspected illegal, high-profile operations in violation of FCC Part 15 rules. The FCC doesn't have the resources for wild-goose chases, but if you really do your homework and the FCC can be reasonably sure that they won't be wasting their time, then they are much more likely to act. If his roommates are happy will they keep paying their own individual accounts and tell him to fix his own problem? Can you make more and keep more by charging say $10/head and giving everyone a choice or selling the whole unit for $35-$45? Are you bringing them in-house for a significant duration Trainging Class? For example, a 1 week class room training? What minimum requirements do you expect them to have to be worthy to be trained? I hear that many are successfull hiring X-Satelite TV installers, but they are not likely to have extensive TCPIP experience. Its not easy finding a guy thats willing to climb a ladder daily and also had his free time being spent as a computer geek. They are two different breed people (The worken man and the intellectual). Do you train the geek to climb a ladder, or train the ladder climber to be a geek? I find that applicants that have physical labor backgrounds work faster, and enjoy their job as being a wireless installer, as adds many new challenges and is easier work. But the training can be tough starting at ground zero, how to configure the LAPTOP with an IP address. When I employed, and paid by the hour or salary, it was pretty easy to figure out who to hire. We got it there, link established and was working on aiming the antenna when the laptop ran out of power. The power plug on the laptop PSU had broken and, well... we were dead. The people got back a few days later, and by then, yes, quite a bit of snow had fallen. When we had the chance to go back and finish ( plug the power in inside, hook up thier equipment) we had no signal. We tried everything we could think of, short of changing parts, because we didn't take any (wasn't our install rig, just a 4x4 so we could get through the deep snow), no signal. Yesterday, after a few days of warm, we drove in ( this time, install rig, my '89 Caravan ) digging through some deep snow going in the canyon between them and the main road. Eventually, we changed every part, including the WAR board and SR9, no signal. Then, I assembled the WAR we took out and all the parts changed out, and standing there, on the ground... I had a solid link. Finally, in pitch black dark, I climbed the ladder, had someone provide some light, and hooked up the SR9 through another pigtail to the anntenna... POOF, signal. Put the original back on... Poof, signal. then, none. Work the pigtail around so it's not tensioned and in line and put it back on... Poof, signal. SO, we would add another $25ish to the cost of your CPE. At this point, the price is exactly the same (or very close). NOW, let's talk about upsell capability. With the Alvarion solution (including a router), I could upgrade the speed, but that costs how much? I could offer a firewall, vpn, qos or other options, but I'd have to change the cost of the router from a $25 router to (at least) a $100 router. If I am able to hit one customer in an area, but the others have obscured LOS, I would have to build another AP somewhere, where with MT, I could just add an $80 (including antenna) upgrade to their router and offer service off that new AP. [WISPA] FCC definitions
Does a WISP fall under the designation of a telecommunications carrier even though it isnt required to file form 499-a? Under definition found at USC title 47,153.40 , it appears that an ISP and in particular a WISP offers telecommunications services and is deemed a telecommunications carrier . From The USAC website: To be a telecommunications carrier, the carrier must (1) allow the customer to transmit information of its own design and choosing, without change in the form or content of the information, and (2) provide that capability for a fee directly to the public, or to such classes of users as to be effectively available to the public (i.e., hold itself out to serve indifferently all potential users). USAC defines a carrier as above. They also require that Eligible Telecommunications Carriers file 499-A. As an industry, if we supply telecommunications services, as defined above, directly to a school or library and dont file the 499 is that considered breaking the rules? RE: [WISPA] Re: Outsourced installations (KyWiFi LLC)
No- what Im saying is that rolling, or hilly terrain is inherently difficult to cover. We are in pretty hilly terrain, use 900 and its rough at times. We almost always do signal testing for each prospect. We have paging down as low as 158.7 that still wont propagate everywhere. A big high ridge is a real signal killer. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of KyWiFi LLC Sent: Tuesday, October 10, 2006 8:08 AM To: WISPA General List Subject: Re: [WISPA] Re: Outsourced installations (KyWiFi LLC) Will 700Mhz not work like the local tv station broadcast? [WISPA] lightning
We had the lightning storm of the century here 2 days ago. It was an awesome spectacle to witness. It was a much more distressing spectacle to watch our network map begin to blink red all over the place. Which leads me to a couple of questions: How do you handle customer installations that get fried? We install and own the gear. We are taking the external ones on the chin. We took down one panel that has a big black hole right in the center. Another customer has a hole in his roof- our gear died along with the roof. What do you do if the customer AC takes a shot, and burns your equipment? Do they pay because it came in on their side or do you take the replacement and the truck roll on the chin because you own the equipment? We have multiple brands of products on the same towers. The tower that took a hit was populated with, among other things, some B-14s, proxim QB, and some Tranzeos. All units are grounded to the same structure/bussbar. The Tranzeos seem much more sensitive to lightning than some of the other products. Has anyone had any similar experiences with them? RE: [WISPA] [Fwd: Durbin introduces bill toencouragehighspeedinternetaccess in rural areas]
America wants cheap food. Period. In the past, cattle took better than 30 months to reach slaughter weight on grass. Under current industrialized agricultural methods cattle can go from birth to the meat case in less than 12 months. Its very similar for chickens, hogs or any other common form of protein we consume on a daily basis. All this requires cheap grain, which in turn is produced with assistance of govt. subsidization. In the past, meat was often a luxury meal for most Americans. Now we all get to eat it nearly every day. Most of my neighbors farm. I dont know one of them that would be taking subsidies just to screw the American taxpayer. Farmers usually just end up being a small cog in the great wheel of food production. So, if you dont like the system, dont participate. Buy all your food from a local producer and pay the actual price of production+profit. Dont patronize Safeway, or Walmart or Kroger etc.- otherwise you are implicitly participating in the system. Its a much more complicated issue than just paying farmers not to produce. RE: [WISPA] [Fwd: Durbin introducesbilltoencouragehighspeedinternetaccess in rural areas]
Marlon- I agree with you - Subsidies aren't just hand outs so some hayseed farmer can sit on the porch all day spittin redman at the dog. Its much more clever and insidious than that. Americans spend tax $$ on Agricultural Subsidies and get to eat crap, sometimes literally, for their investment. The subsidies really are about cheap raw materials for industrial food processors, feedlots, additive manufacturers etc. They get cheap grain, Americans get feed cheap food. And often there is not a whole lot of food in the food. Earl Butz and Richard Nixon started America down this slippery slope long before Carter showed up. They were the ones responsible for the dismantling of the grain bank loans in favor of direct cash payments to producers. Thanks for the insight from a farmer's perspective. chris Oh boy, this is gonna be GREAT (said in my best Animal House voice) Unlike some others here I'm gonna take this on. Please feel free to expand on my thoughts as needed. WISPA is a political organization guys. We work with the FCC, congress, state and local governments. Eventually we'll help other countries make things better for their people too. It's important that people here, especially the business owners, understand how things REALLY work. To get to that point we have to talk to each other about what happens on OUR watch. Otherwise all we learn is one sided and we can't form reality based opinions. Having said that, I agree with you 100% David. As far as you've gone.. We own thousands of acres. Not me, my parents though. We get a LOT of money for not growing wheat every year. Believe me, it's not a good thing for the community. We buy less fuel, equipment, fertilizer, insurance etc. etc. etc. Many farm towns are all but dead because they can't support the churches, grocery stores, clothing stores, hardware stores etc. Wal-Mart hasn't helped, but mostly it's the lost of bodies that has hurt. When the school district is loosing kids you know people, especially the next generation just aren't staying here. But what's a body to do? Out here most of the ground we're being paid not to raise crops on is really bad ground. It should not have ever been pulled from grazeland in the first place. But there's not always been more food than people, so folks planted every acre they could. Farming used to be a good living. Back before Jimmy Carter that is. His choice to use food as a political weapon caused other countries to start growing a LOT of food. And our wonderful universities and government was all too happy to teach them how. So now we don't feed you AND the whole world. We feed you and part of the world. Farmers today compete against Australia, south america, China and a lot of other countries. Here we have more rules that everyone, not only the farmers but the suppliers of our chemicals and machinery too, have to follow so our costs are often driven much higher than our competitors. But we've got good ground and we know how to take care of it so we can probably keep up that way. Many of those other countries subsidize their farmers or tax our incoming crops though. Sometimes both. In those cases we certainly can not compete. If we can't compete we go out of business. If no one in the industry can compete the industry eventually shuts down. When's the last time you saw a wagon wheel plant? Or a blacksmith shop? It does happen. In those cases though, there's been something else, something better to take it's place. What are you going to do for food if you can't afford to grow it here? You can live without your computers if someone blocks the ships coming to our shores. You can survive without your TV, radio, mp3 player etc. Let me ask you, if there's another big war and you were on the other side, what's the first thing you'd do? Me, I'd shut down America's access to the rest of the world. Without America many economies would collapse, war materials couldn't get out, and nothing, including (especially???) food would get in. Governments know that as long as people are eating it's not likely that they will revolt. When they start to starve, when the children die, bullets start to fly. And NO government, even the mighty Romans, survives when the people are against them. The USA spends less per capita on food than almost any country in the world. If you allow too many farmers to go broke that won't be the case. You'll have to buy food instead of that new car. Here's where it gets really interesting. Did you know that the farmers can't sell their crops themselves in most cases? There are two or three exporters in the whole country. They sell the wheat AND set the prices that the farmers are paid. I can't go to, say, China, and say, Look, you're paying $5 for a bushel of wheat. I only get $3.75, how about if I sell to you at $4.50 and we both win? How would you like to have to sell your internet to

The largest cost to detur take rate when WISPS make subs pay for it. Its likely that one can assume that many of the subscribers will need to install outdoor equipment (adding $100-$300 BUCKS), to reliably connect to the mesh. So you could easilly add $1.5 million to the mesh cost for CPE, or remove $1.5million from the Fix Wireless plan if you were going to compare apples to apples. What Mesh still has on its side is mobility. The question is what value should a WISP put on that. Mobility can be easilly be the reason to justify why a muni should support a oublic interest project. (cable and DSL go to the home but NOT mobile for teh community to share.). Mobilty also allow Muni type applications, such as to support travelling users (commerce), or Mobile government work force. Mesh also gives Muni bargining power in the deployment, as it uses an asset of value that the governement has to trade and offer (easements, light poles, and power from them). In a Fixed Wireless deployment it could easilly be argued that teh givernemnt has little assets of value to the provider. Its usually the independant property owners tht have the preferred assets for signal distribution. For example, in my county, I am allowed free access to city infrastructure as a requirement that allowed tower building restrictions to be passed years ago. But yet I chose to pay for broadcast sites, because teh Governement do not own the best sites that are advantageous to me. Part of my point is that its not jsut the radios costs that are relevant. I'm starting to think that the Tropos, use all verticle, use only one channel all across the network, design may not be to bad an ideas after all. If it solves the challenge to get mobility well, and does not work well for subs inside their homes, it still allows lots of spectrum for the high quality Fixed Wireless providers. Part of the arguement is that its possible that MESH may be the only way to get mobilty well. And maybe the answer is to deliver it with the least impact on everyone else. Of course Alvarion mobile products have shown otherwise for vehichle mobile solutions. So what would happen if more Fixed Wireless manufacturers made Mobile CPEs? Would it get rid of some of teh need of mesh? Sure mesh gives person/laptop mobility, but will any one really use it? There is a good arguement that
